(Pocket-lint) - It's mere months following Canon's first full-frame mirrorless camera release - the EOS R - and the Japanese camera-maker is already diversifying the range with the addition of the more entry-level EOS RP.

So what's it all about? Canon thinks the new RF lens mount is the company's future, so the EOS RP is designed to entice those more likely to buy a DSLR into buying a mirrorless model instead (its natural competitor is Canon's own 6D Mark II).

The RP's layout is a lot more 'traditional Canon DSLR' than the original EOS R model, plus there's an RF-to-EF lens adapter in the box so those with existing Canon lenses can continue to use them as normal.

Not to mention, the EOS RP is the lightest full-frame camera body ever made, at just 485g with the card and battery included. That's impressive - although plonk a larger EOS RF lens on the front and the point of that is largely negated.

The RP embodies the same sensor as the 6D Mark II - well, almost, it's modified to adapt for the RF mount's different flange-back distance - so you won't be getting the 30MP resolution of the EOS R, but the quality should still be undeniable thanks to Digic 8 processing and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus being speedy.

Elsewhere there's a 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder (the same as that found in the EOS M50) and a 3-inch 1.04m-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD. In-camera charging is possible via USB, but a charging cradle is also included in the box too, so if you have spare LP-E17 batteries then you can juggle between them.

It looks as though Canon is keen to do with its full-frame mirrorless line-up what it's already done with its DSLR line-up: flood the market to try and hit every potential buyer point. Which might work, but the naysayers will be perplexed why EOS R and EOS RP are so different in terms of layout, while a truly high-end R model still lacks - an area that the Panasonic S1, Nikon Z7 and Sony A7R III all fill.
