Are you one of those people who signs off your Twitter status updates with an emoji? If so, don't fret - you aren't alone.

Emojitracker is an experiment in real-time tracking of all emoji used on twitter.

According to its developers it takes advantage of a number of technologies, notably the Twitter-streaming API among other things, to show how often certain emojis are being used.

The site highlights them as they are being used and shows that most people use the love heart symbol :hearts: followed by a face that is crying with happiness :joy: and then a blushing face.

The :hearts: tag has been used almost 7 million times since the website was created.

The site tracks hundreds of emoticons in total. Other popular ones include thumbs up, a broken heart, and a standard smiley face.
