As we reported would be the case, Spotify has now officially announced the launch of its API, opening up the streaming service as a "music platform".

The release of "libspotify" will allow third-party developers to write applications for the service and "offers the possibility of creating an exciting new range of features", says the company in a blog post.

Libspotify - and any applications built with it - will be available to Spotify Premium users from now.

"With the release of libspotify we hope to empower our users to build upon what we've started and come up with imaginative and innovative new ways of interacting with Spotify", says the company.

"There are hundreds of features that users have suggested to add to Spotify and by taking this step we hope to encourage the developer community to expand our service".

Developers interested in libspotify can find out more at while the rest of us wait and see what will be created.
