Skype and Nokia have announced that a fully fledged version of its Skype app on the Symbian ^1 platform is available to download from the Ovi Store.

Although Skype has actually been available on Symbian S60 devices in its beta version for some time now Wednesday's announcement brings it out of beta and suitable for those who don't want the worry of unproven software.

The Skype app will allow Nokia smartphone owners to chat away to other Skype users for free when out and about regardless of whether they're in a Wi-Fi hotspot or not.

"We’re seeing around 1.5 million downloads a day on Ovi Store now and believe that the Skype client for Nokia smartphones will have wide appeal to Symbian users", said Jo Harlow, senior vice president for smartphones, Nokia, hoping that the new app addition will lure people to the company's handsets.

The Skype mobile app will apparently also be available on other manufacturers' devices soon, including Sony Ericsson.
