What's now known as Microsoft Windows Live Messenger is celebrating its 10th birthday today. Launched on this day back in 1999 as MSN Messenger Service, Microsoft boasts that within 60 days of the debut, an impressive 2.4 million people had sent their first "instant message".

In 2006 MSN Messenger became Windows Live Messenger and today, apparently over 330 million people use Windows Live Messenger every month and there are over 4 billion Messenger status updates every day.

Mark West from the Windows Live Messenger team said: "Whether it’s used in business, friendship or romance, Instant Messaging has swept the nation to become an essential part of day to day life. This is a real milestone for Windows Live Messenger and we’re very excited to see what the next 10 years has in store".
