We still don't know exactly when Windows 8 will land (a couple of leaked manufacturer roadmaps suggest early next year) but we do know that Microsoft bods are making good progress on the new system, following the emergence of some leaked screenshots.

The grabs show that the Redmond-based giant is looking at introducing the ribbon interface that has been utilised in recent versions of its Office software into the explorer windows.

There's also a funky looking, Windows Phone 7-esque login screen, which was rumoured to be an April fools, but has apparently now been confirmed as the real-deal as well as a new File menu setup too.

It's very much a work-in-progress, as you'll see incomplete sections within the screen grabs, but the shots do give a good indication as to how Windows 8 will differ from its older siblings.
