Google has announced a new font for Google Ice Cream Sandwich called Roboto, as it looks to give its new mobile phone OS a fresh "magazine" style look.

According to Google, Roboto has a dual nature. It has a mechanical skeleton and the forms are largely geometric. At the same time the font’s sweeping semi-circular curves give it a cheerful demeanour.

The sans serif font will now be the main font throughout the new mobile operating system replacing previous fonts found in Gingerbread and Honeycomb.

"We didn't want fake brushed metal, or wood, we wanted a new font for a new operating system," explained Google, clearly having a dig at Apple and its operating system design as it revealed the new font.

The entirely new typeface is of course optimized for high-resolution screens (Ice Cream Sandwich comes with 720p as the native resolution) and promises to improve readability and brings a polished, modern feel to the user interface.
