Google celebrates its 12th birthday today - and to mark the occasion a new doodle has been created.

The special birthday effort shows a painting of a cake by bakery loving Pop artist Wayne Thiebaud.

The doodle ends speculation as to when the Big G's birthday actually is - Wikipedia states that (at the moment, at least) the company was founded on 4 September 1998, and in the past Google had marked anniversaries on the 7 September and the 15 September - which was the date the domain Google.com was first registered.

But it seems as if this doodle is a firm statement that 27 September is Google's special day.

So, next year the search giant becomes a teenager - expect it to get all huffy about completing its tasks, and for the search engine not to function until at least midday.
