A card protection service says that hundreds of MobileMe subscribers have been tricked into handing over personal information in a phishing campaign.

CardCops, which is owned by the Affinion Group, claims that data on several hundred .Mac member's data is now being sold in the blackmarket, and possibly being bought by identity thieves.

The information that is being traded includes social security numbers, birth dates, mothers' maiden names, and credit card numbers.

CardsCops says that the scammers have got hold of these details using the emails that Apple sent to MobileMe subscribers keeping them updated on the struggling service.

The email scams included correspondence with the title: "Billing problem".

When MobileMe members clicked on the link within the email, it took them to what looked like an official Apple page, where they were asked for their details.
