Some Macbook users are reporting that the battery life of their portable computers has dramatically reduced since installing Apple’s OS X Mountain Lion.

Wired has tested the claims using a Macbook Pro with Retina display and it too found it lost about 38 per cent of the usual eight hours the computer can run without needing to be charged.

Apple has been made aware of the claims and though the reduced battery life doesn’t appear to be affecting all OS X Mountain Lion users, the Cupertino giant is looking into both the cause of the problem and means of fixing it. One possible solution is thought to be Apple making an update available through the Mac App Store.

However, some users are claiming to have found the issue improved after disabling and reinstalling Dropbox. Others have reported that resetting GateKeeper, which in turn allows the installation of apps from any source, has also improved the battery life.
