As Pocket-lint confirmed earlier today, Apple will release its new operating system on Wednesday the company has officially confirmed on its earnings report conference call on Tuesday.

Apple has until now only confirmed that it would be sometime in July, leaving the rumour mill to guess at a date, however Pocket-lint had confirmed with industry sources earlier on Tuesday that launch day would be on Wednesday 20 July. It looks like our sources were correct.

The news comes as Apple announced record quarterly profits selling almost 4m Macs in the last 90 days, something it is hoping to no doubt beat once a new operating system and possibly a new MacBook Air hits the streets.

The new Mac OS X Lion will be available in store (not confirmed) and for the first time via the company's Mac App Store saving you from queuing in your lunch break. It costs £20.99 in the UK.
