Pocket-lint has just received word direct from Cupertino that iOS 4.2 is going to hit iTunes today, 22 November.
The software update, which for the first time brings the iPad in line with the iPhone and iPod touch, was expected to land earlier this month, but hey, we'll forgive Apple as it has hit its November promise at least (which is a darn sight better than the white iPhone 4 delay, which is now up to 4 months).
“iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season”, said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit”.
Oooh, was that the sound of a gauntlet being laid?
Along with Game Center and Multitasking for the iPad, the 4.2 update also brings with it AirPlay - which lets you stream music, video and photos wirelessly from your iDevice to your Apple TV and/or AirPlay-enabled speakers.
There's also AirPrint, which is "a next-generation Wi-Fi print architecture that dramatically simplifies printing by completely eliminating printer drivers".
HP Photosmart, HP LaserJet Pro and HP Officejet will be the first printers to support the feature.
Apple has also announced that iOS 4.2 will add free Find My iPhone functionality, without the need for a MobileMe account. You'll be able to use a new free app from the App Store to make use of this.
Finally, the chaps at 1 Infinite Loop have revealed that iOS 4.2 is going to let you rent TV shows through iTunes, although it isn't yet clear if this is US-only.
Our iTunes isn't updating our devices as of yet, but we'll update you as soon as it does. (Usually Apple updates land around 6pm UK time).
