Broadband.co.uk has released the speedtest results for December 2008 that sees Virgin keeping its lead as the UK's fastest broadband provider for the fourth consecutive month.

"The average speed UK wide has increased for the first time since July 2008, up by 14.02% to 3.667Mbps", says Edd Dawson from broadband.co.uk.

The results were calculated from thousands of broadband speed tests taken on the broadband.co.uk site during December 2008 by broadband users UK wide.

"However when comparing download speeds for all providers between various times of day we can see that the average speed drops by over a quarter at peak times showing work still needs to be done to increase capacity to meet demand", says Dawson.

Broadband.co.uk says that the most stable provider during peak times is O2/Be with the smallest drop of just over 11% and the worst is Tiscali with a drop of just under 40%.
