Mobile phone companies have been given their own domain suffix on the web with the announcement of a .mobi domain name.
The creation of the new suffix is to let people quickly know that the site has been designed to be viewed on a pda or mobile phone.
Companies including Hutchison 3, GSM Association, Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Syniverse Technologies, TIM, Telefonica Moviles, T-Mobile and Vodafone are all supporting the venture.
It is estimated that the first domain names will be available during the first half of 2006, starting with a 90 day restricted period, allowing corporations with trademark validated names to secure a .mobi domain.
Generic second level domain names will be available on a first come, first served basis.
Pocket-lint already has a PDA version for users on the move. Simply go to www.pocket-lint.co.uk on a PDA and the index screen will automatically resize to 300 pixels wide.
