One of the most frustrating problems you’ll encounter is linked to your iPad or iPhone. Error 3194 means your copy of iTunes is unable to access the server that’s responsible for both delivering updates and helping restore your iPhone or iPad. Related error codes are 17, 1639, 3000-3020 and 3100-3199. You may also get a cryptic error informing you “This device isn’t eligible for the requested build”.

Step one is to make sure you’re running the latest version of iTunes (Mac users should head to System Preferences > Software Update, Windows users should choose Help > Check for Updates). Next, verify your internet connection is working, and that your security software isn’t blocking access to the update server. You can also manually add the following line to your HOSTS file: gs.apple.com

If it’s already present, try adding a # in front of it.
