For the next couple of days (until 4am 13 March GMT) you can download 700 Marvel Comics comic books for free via the Comixology iPhone, iPad or Android application.
The "#1" promotion includes the first issues of multiple series including some of the greats from the early days of Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Fantastic Four and many other Marvel faves. It also includes plenty of the Marvel Now number ones that have appeared over the past few months.
Marvel announced the giveaway during SXSW, the music, film and interactive media festival in Austin, Texas, which is why it only runs for a short while. And you can even view and download the comics through a web browser on the Comixology site, but that particular venue seems to be completely frozen at present, presumably because of the huge volumes of traffic it's getting right now.
Also hitting the iTunes App Store for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch recently is Marvel Unlimited, the company's own comic book equivalent of Netflix.
As an extension to the existing desktop version, it gives unlimited access to more than 13,000 comics for $9.99 (£6.70) a month, or $59.88 a year as a one-off payment (a saving of 50 per cent). The main difference between Marvel Unlimited and the paid-for service through Comixology is that comics don't hit the former for six months after publication. You can access entire runs, however, as well as major crossovers and tie-ins from the past.
