Gorillaz driving force and musician Damon Albarn has recorded an entire album using only his iPad, and plans to offer it as a free present on the band's website on Christmas Day. The unnamed collection will be available as a free download to members of Gorillaz.com as they click on day 25 of the site's advent calendar.

The album was created while the band were on tour, and was previously going to be offered before Christmas. However, he missed the window of opportunity (not a pun, considering the band's relationship with Microsoft and IE9)...

Speaking to Perth News, Albarn and Gorillaz co-founder Jamie Hewlett revealed more details: "At the moment we’ve got an advent calendar on our website and there is a daily door that opens to reveal a gift."

"On Christmas Eve, a video for one of the new songs from the iPad album will be released. Then, on Christmas Day fans get the whole album downloaded to their computer for free as a gift."

Albarn also talked about the inspiration behind the iPad project, and why it had to come out before Christmas: "I literally made it on the road in America over a month. I didn’t write it before, I didn’t prepare it. I just did it day by day as a kind of diary of my experience in America."

"If I left it until the New Year to release it then the cynics out there would say 'Oh well, it's been tampered with', but if I put it out now they'd know that I haven't done anything because I've been on tour ever since."

Pocket-lint has tried to register on Gorillaz.com since the news was leaked, but has had no joy to date. Clearly, hoards of fans are currently clogging up the server. We'd advise waiting a little while before rushing over there. After all, you've got until Christmas Day.

Will you be waiting in line for the new album? What do you think it'll sound like? Let us know in the comments below...
