Karuma, the Singapore-based company that brought us the kid-proof PlayBase Android tablet last year, is back with a sequel - the PlayBase+ - which it claims is "the world’s first antibacterial tablet".

At a barbecue a few summers back Pocket-lint unwisely ate a suspect looking sausage that played havoc with our innards for a few days and was subsequently prescribed some Levofloxacin, a very antibacterial tablet, so we've a few issues with Karuma's bold claims but we'll let them slide for now.

The PlayBase+'s antibacterial action comes courtesy of a "touch-screen that actively kills harmful germs". The screen is also anti-glare, anti-scratch and anti-fingerprint.

In terms of tech, its a similar setup to the original. There's a 7-inch (800 x 480) display, it's running a skinned Android Gingerbread via a 1.2 GHz single-core processor and there is 1GB of DDR 3 RAM.

There's also 8GB of storage (upgradable with microSD), a front-facing camera, built in Wi-Fi, an accelerometer and stereo speakers. Battery life is 4 hours, 60 hours on standby. All packed in a chassis that is 9.7mm thick and weighs 325g.

There is added protection by the way of the PlayCover; a shock-absorbent silicone cover to prevent damage from drops and also protects against rain, spills, dirt, scratches and screen marks. The PlayCover doubles up as a stand for the tab.

In terms of child-friendly software, the PlayBase+ also offers preloaded programs such as SafePlay, YogiPlay and Net Nanny.

The PlayBase+ will be available for $229 and can be ordered on Karuma's PlayBase website now.
