Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 camera
Does the Micro Four Thirds GF1 beat Olympus’s Digital Pen?
3 November 2009 12:00 GMT
- The Good
- DSLR-like features and picture quality, but with the convenience and portability of a compact, albeit one with a solid feel aluminium construction
- The Bad
- Pricey either with or without lens combination. Requires investment in a new camera system from scratch. EVF costs extra
- Verdict
- Capable and compact Micro Four Thirds system offering from Panasonic proves the company’s most successful realisation of "DSLR quality without the bulk" to date
- Price
- £570 (body only) or £800 with 20mm pancake lens
-
Olympus FE-5020 digital camera
Entry-level snapshot with style beyond its budget
17 August 2009 16:05 GMT
- The Good
- Small and portable, barely larger than a credit card, more stylish design than usually found at this price point, user-friendly intuitive operation, quick and responsive for the most part, fun "Magic Filters"
- The Bad
- Flat and washed out looking images (unless shooting with "Magic Filter" deployed) require a degree of post processing to bring out their best – not ideally something you’d want from a supposedly beginner friendly, entry-level compact
- Verdict
- It looks good and retails for a fair price, so it’s disappointing the standard images the FE-5020 produces could do with a boost in contrast and saturation
- Price
- £169
-
Olympus Pen E-P1 digital camera
The sexiest camera of 2009?
13 July 2009 9:44 GMT
- The Good
- Image quality, handling, super control panel, comprehensive, creative feature set, good dust reduction system, retro styling, build, lenses
- The Bad
- No (built-in) viewfinder, no built-in flash, price
- Verdict
- We were won over by the image quality and that at the end of the day is probably the single most important factor and so makes this a camera one we cannot help but recommend
- Price
- £699 (14-42mm zoom kit)
-
Ricoh GXR digital camera - First Look
Is this a Micro Four Thirds competitor? 10 November 2009 6:00 GMT- The Good
- Build quality, EVF is excellent, slide quality is reassuring
- The Bad
- Price, new system means limited options
- Verdict
- From what we've seen from our initial hands-on the idea of changing lens units no longer seems so laughable
- Price
- £419 (body) + £330 (Ricoh lens)
-
Olympus Mju 7010 digital camera
Is this 12MP pocket snapper truly magical?
24 August 2009 19:41 GMT
- The Good
- User friendly operation, solid construction, portably pocket sized, quick and responsive for the most part
- The Bad
- Still images are flat and dull in appearance straight out of the camera (if not utilising magic effects filters), with loss of focus towards frame edges when shooting at maximum wide angle. No HD movies, which seems amiss when similarly priced rivals are offering this
- Verdict
- The Mju 7010 misses out on the latest must-have of HD video, but makes up in part by incorporating a 7x optical zoom and fun effects filters. Shame then that image quality is below par and in many other respects this model feels simply average
- Price
- £249
-
Olympus Pen E-P1 - First Look
Is retro the way to go? 18 June 2009 16:00 GMT- The Good
- Image quality, simple to use, distinct design, 720p movie capture, fun to use
- The Bad
- No viewfinder, no flash, styling will deter some
- Verdict
- The Olympus E-P1 is a true hybrid, falling into the space between compact and DSLR. It is distinctly different in its offering and may, for some, be appealing as a result
- Price
- £699 (14-42mm zoom kit)
-

- £240
-

One for watersports?
13 August 2009 9:00 GMT
- The Good
- Nice colour reproduction, good overall image quality, environment proofing
- The Bad
- Lens cover, controls a little convoluted, far too expensive, video quality not great
- Verdict
- Good images and the appeal of weatherprooing are offset slightly by a few niggles. The price, however, seems far too high over previous models

A sufficiently solid alternative to Canon or Nikon?
25 November 2009 12:09 GMT
- The Good

- The Bad
- No HDMI output for hooking the camera up to a high-def TV or monitor despite it offering HD movies, no rechargeable battery provided
- Verdict
- For those looking for (nearly) all the latest must haves in one package, the Pentax K-x feature set offers a good value return for your money, whilst also being friendly to use via the prominence of its auto settings. Results straight out of the camera require minimal post processing too
- Price
- £599 with 18-55mm kit lens
-

HD video, but at what cost?
4 August 2009 12:00 GMT
- The Good
- Adjustable high (ish) resolution rear LCD, tactile rubber body "shroud", impressively clear Live View finder, sharp, realistically coloured evenly exposed results
- The Bad
- Hefty price tag, existing APS-C sized sensor DSLR users will have to invest in a whole new system from scratch
- Verdict
- While it’s difficult to know who the GH1 will presently appeal to given its semi-pro price tag, the hybrid camera performs well and is more than pleasant to use
- Price
- £1299 (14-140mm Mega OIS zoom)
-

23 July 2003 23:16 GMT
- The Good
- The same great functionality as its predecessor
- The Bad

- £250
-

- The Good
- Excellent image quality, good ergonomics, menu system, comprehensive and creative feature set, customisability, super control panel, top plate display, responsive, good dust reduction system, handling
- The Bad
- Bulky for a FourThirds Format camera! Viewfinder slightly blurry, not much more detail than E-3’s 10MP sensor, comprehensive feature set means complex menus
- Verdict
- The E-30 provides a level of control and features most professional level DSLRs would appreciate and at a great price too
- Price
- £850
-
Olympus Mju Tough-6000 digital camera
Is this tough enough for the job?
3 April 2009 9:00 GMT
- The Good
- Tough, waterproof, freezeproof, dropproof, price, rugged
- The Bad
- Images were soft, dropping it might not damage the camera but it will damage your floor or foot, xD or microSD only, fiddly buttons on rear
- Verdict
- If rugged is your thing, you don't want to print your pictures too large and you can put up with some fiddly controls, this might just be the camera for you
- Price
- £200
-

- The Bad
- Small viewfinder is slightly blurry, many complex features means complexity of set up (AF adjustment for example)

Sigma DP2 digital camera
Does this fixed lens compact live up to its DSLR-like claims?
1 September 2009 10:39 GMT
- The Good
- Excellent lens, wealth of hands-on control, works best when attempting images with a shallow depth of field
- The Bad
- Expensive, variable white balance if left in auto mode, washed out de-saturated colours, plasticky feel to build, occasional operational freezes
- Verdict
- The Sigma DP2 won’t appeal to everybody, and that’s largely by design. It works best when viewed as a compact back-up to an existing DSLR, or an experimental supplement to a more fully-featured, user-friendly digital compact
- Price
- £599
-

Nikon D3000 DSLR camera
Does Nikon's new entry-level DLSR steal the limelight?
25 August 2009 12:00 GMT
- The Good
- Small, lightweight yet sturdy construction, reliable results and responsive in operation, intuitive to use with or without Intelligent Guide deployed
- The Bad
- No Live View option, no movies of any description, no built-in anti-shake
- Verdict
- Though some may find Nikon’s implementation of an on-board help guide with large print text and bright graphics on the D3000 patronising, there’s no denying it’s a clever way to widen its traditionally specialist user base and attract new converts – even if we did miss use of Live View when attempting shots from otherwise tricky angles on occasion
- Price
- £429.99 (body only)/£499.99 (18-55mm VR lens)
-
Pentax X70 digital camera
Does this compact 24x zoom bridge camera get closer to perfection?
16 September 2009 9:00 GMT
- The Good
- Big zoom capability from relatively compact dimensions, easy to use intuitive operation for the most part, good results achievable shooting handheld if plenty of light available
- The Bad
- Plasticy build, resolution drops when choosing faster capture setting, no RAW capture option, disappointing results at ISO 800 and above, zoom disabled when shooting video
- Verdict
- Like many big zoom cameras that try and do it all, there’s as much here to delight as disappoint. The wider creative possibilities offered by that broader focal range shouldn’t be underestimated, and, once used, going back to that 3x zoom compact will seem tough
- Price
- £369.99
-

- Verdict
- A reliable performer delivering richly detailed and colourful images, though you might want to trade up from the kit lens fairly quickly
- Price
- £720 (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens)
-
