Is this a Micro Four Thirds competitor? 10 November 2009 6:00 GMT- The Good
- Build quality, EVF is excellent, slide quality is reassuring
- The Bad
- Price, new system means limited options
- Verdict

-
Pentax K-x DSLR camera
A sufficiently solid alternative to Canon or Nikon?
25 November 2009 12:09 GMT
- The Good
- Comprehensive feature set that ticks most of the boxes for today’s DSLR user, sharp results with kit lens and at optimal settings
- The Bad
- No HDMI output for hooking the camera up to a high-def TV or monitor despite it offering HD movies, no rechargeable battery provided
- Verdict
- For those looking for (nearly) all the latest must haves in one package, the Pentax K-x feature set offers a good value return for your money, whilst also being friendly to use via the prominence of its auto settings. Results straight out of the camera require minimal post processing too
- Price
- £599 with 18-55mm kit lens
-
Sigma DP2 digital camera
Does this fixed lens compact live up to its DSLR-like claims?
1 September 2009 10:39 GMT
- The Good
- Excellent lens, wealth of hands-on control, works best when attempting images with a shallow depth of field
- The Bad
- Expensive, variable white balance if left in auto mode, washed out de-saturated colours, plasticky feel to build, occasional operational freezes
- Verdict
- The Sigma DP2 won’t appeal to everybody, and that’s largely by design. It works best when viewed as a compact back-up to an existing DSLR, or an experimental supplement to a more fully-featured, user-friendly digital compact
- Price
- £599
-
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 camera
HD video, but at what cost?
4 August 2009 12:00 GMT
- The Good
- Adjustable high (ish) resolution rear LCD, tactile rubber body "shroud", impressively clear Live View finder, sharp, realistically coloured evenly exposed results
- The Bad
- Hefty price tag, existing APS-C sized sensor DSLR users will have to invest in a whole new system from scratch
- Verdict
- While it’s difficult to know who the GH1 will presently appeal to given its semi-pro price tag, the hybrid camera performs well and is more than pleasant to use
- Price
- £1299 (14-140mm Mega OIS zoom)
-
Nikon D3000 DSLR camera
Does Nikon's new entry-level DLSR steal the limelight?
25 August 2009 12:00 GMT
- The Good
- Small, lightweight yet sturdy construction, reliable results and responsive in operation, intuitive to use with or without Intelligent Guide deployed
- The Bad
- No Live View option, no movies of any description, no built-in anti-shake
- Verdict
- Though some may find Nikon’s implementation of an on-board help guide with large print text and bright graphics on the D3000 patronising, there’s no denying it’s a clever way to widen its traditionally specialist user base and attract new converts – even if we did miss use of Live View when attempting shots from otherwise tricky angles on occasion
- Price
- £429.99 (body only)/£499.99 (18-55mm VR lens)
-
Sony Alpha A380 DSLR camera
Can Sony challenge in the DSLR stakes?
28 July 2009 9:00 GMT
- The Good
- Lightweight, user friendly, intuitive, reliable performance, warm, colour rich images, adjustable LCD, less expensive than immediate rivals
- The Bad
- No HD video, hinges for adjusting LCD are stiff, obvious plastic elements of build, kit lens could be sharper, noisier than rivals at higher ISOs
- Verdict
- A reliable performer delivering richly detailed and colourful images, though you might want to trade up from the kit lens fairly quickly
- Price
- £720 (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens)
-
Pentax X70 digital camera
Does this compact 24x zoom bridge camera get closer to perfection?
16 September 2009 9:00 GMT
- The Good
- Big zoom capability from relatively compact dimensions, easy to use intuitive operation for the most part, good results achievable shooting handheld if plenty of light available
- The Bad
- Plasticy build, resolution drops when choosing faster capture setting, no RAW capture option, disappointing results at ISO 800 and above, zoom disabled when shooting video
- Verdict
- Like many big zoom cameras that try and do it all, there’s as much here to delight as disappoint. The wider creative possibilities offered by that broader focal range shouldn’t be underestimated, and, once used, going back to that 3x zoom compact will seem tough
- Price
- £369.99
-

- The Bad

- Verdict
- Capable and compact Micro Four Thirds system offering from Panasonic proves the company’s most successful realisation of "DSLR quality without the bulk" to date
- Price
- £570 (body only) or £800 with 20mm pancake lens

- Price
- £44
-
Canon EOS 7D DSLR camera
We get down with the advanced mid-range model
28 October 2009 14:52 GMT
- The Good
- Build, image quality, viewfinder, performance and speed, AF, flash control, HD video, ergonomics, LCD
- The Bad
- Looks pricey, purple fringing on some high contrast shots with 18-135mm kit lens
- Verdict
- An accomplished and well-equipped semi-professional camera with professional build and specification that’s capable of stunning results and at high resolution too. It looks expensive, but as a step down from canon EOS 1D Mk III, it makes a lot of sense indeed and without that much of a compromise on performance. This is simply a superb new EOS and one that should be a hot contender for your cash
- Price
- £1699 (body only)
-

- Price
- £1499.99 (body only)
-

Nikon D5000 DSLR camera
Cracker HD snapper?
17 June 2009 12:00 GMT

- Image quality, movie quality, tilt turn and swivel LCD (for some shots), handling, ease of use, price
- The Bad
- Small viewfinder, LCD resolution/colour rendition, size (for market), bottom hinged LCD easily impeded on a tripod
- Verdict
- Nikon’s D5000 sits above the D60 but below the D90 in the Nikon DSLR range, with a feature set culled from the latter, but priced towards the former. It has a 12.3MP CMOS sensor and a new tilt, turn, swivel 2.7-inch LCD and HD movie capability and it is, well, a cracker
- Price
- £719 (body only) £799 with 18-55mm VR kit lens

- Solid feel construction, vari-angle LCD, better results at higher ISOs than we’ve witnessed from competing brands (if staying at or below ISO 3200)
- The Bad
- Standard definition video, still priced the same as an entry level DSLR (albeit a cheaper option than buying DSLR plus lens with equivalent focal range)
- Verdict
- Solid feel contender for enthusiastic amateurs wanting a more portable back up for their existing DSLR, without sacrificing too much in the way of manual control. Shame no HD video though, and the price may cause eyes to water
- Price
- £569

Does the first Micro Four Thirds camera impress?
12 June 2009 12:00 GMT
- The Good
- Compact body, ease of control, great performance, articulating screen

- The Bad
- UK price is expensive when compared to the US, no external Mic socket
- Verdict
- The EOS 500D is clearly aimed at the amateur photographer looking for a very good offering without venturing into Canon's higher range like the 40D or above
- Price
- £850
-

- Price
- £699 (14-42mm zoom kit)
-

- Verdict
- The Ricoh GR Digital Mk III follows on from the popular GR Mk I and Mk II where many professional and enthusiast snappers had found a quality compact “home”.
