Pentax K-x DSLR camera
A sufficiently solid alternative to Canon or Nikon?
25 November 2009 12:09 GMT
- The Good
- Comprehensive feature set that ticks most of the boxes for today’s DSLR user, sharp results with kit lens and at optimal settings
- The Bad
- No HDMI output for hooking the camera up to a high-def TV or monitor despite it offering HD movies, no rechargeable battery provided
- Verdict
- For those looking for (nearly) all the latest must haves in one package, the Pentax K-x feature set offers a good value return for your money, whilst also being friendly to use via the prominence of its auto settings. Results straight out of the camera require minimal post processing too
- Price
- £599 with 18-55mm kit lens
-
Samsung ST550 digital camera - First Look
How vain are you? 14 August 2009 11:29 GMT- The Good

- The Bad
- Bet all those screens eat the battery

- Price
- £TBC/$349

Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR digital camera
A viable all-in-one alternative to a DSLR?
8 October 2009 9:00 GMT
- The Good
- Sturdy construction, intuitive operation, broad focal range allows for a wider variety of creative choices
- The Bad
- Priced the same as an entry level DSLR (albeit cheaper than one coupled with a lens with the equivalent focal range), standard definition video
- Verdict
- A jack-of-all-trades super zoom that whilst it may not offer the broadest range on the market, offers one of the best builds and a distinctive feature set none the less
- Price
- £429
-
Canon EOS 7D DSLR camera
We get down with the advanced mid-range model
28 October 2009 14:52 GMT
- The Good
- Build, image quality, viewfinder, performance and speed, AF, flash control, HD video, ergonomics, LCD
- The Bad
- Looks pricey, purple fringing on some high contrast shots with 18-135mm kit lens
- Verdict
- An accomplished and well-equipped semi-professional camera with professional build and specification that’s capable of stunning results and at high resolution too. It looks expensive, but as a step down from canon EOS 1D Mk III, it makes a lot of sense indeed and without that much of a compromise on performance. This is simply a superb new EOS and one that should be a hot contender for your cash
- Price
- £1699 (body only)
-

- The Good
- DSLR-like features and picture quality, but with the convenience and portability of a compact, albeit one with a solid feel aluminium construction
- The Bad
- Pricey either with or without lens combination. Requires investment in a new camera system from scratch. EVF costs extra
- Verdict
- Capable and compact Micro Four Thirds system offering from Panasonic proves the company’s most successful realisation of "DSLR quality without the bulk" to date
- Price
- £570 (body only) or £800 with 20mm pancake lens
-
Liquid Digital Solutions aGent V5 webcam
The best looking webcam ever?
3 November 2009 14:14 GMT
- The Good
- Looks good, mounting accessories
- The Bad
- Poor sound quality, no autofocus, dust on sensor
- Verdict

- Price
- £99.99
-
Casio Exilim EX-H10 digital camera
Big zoom yet small camera: the ideal travel companion?
25 September 2009 9:00 GMT
- The Good
- Solid feel build and long lens reach coupled with smaller than average dimensions for such a feature set, which includes the latest must-have of HD movie capture not to mention longer than average battery life
- The Bad
- Average image quality for its class, tricky to get a completely sharp shots when shooting handheld at extremities of the zoom, positioning of the built-in flash means that fingers can sometimes stray in front, zoom disabled in movie mode and no HDMI out
- Verdict
- The EX-H10 offers fair value for those wanting a bigger than average zoom but a smaller, pocket-sized camera. However, if image quality is the main concern, and we’re being picky, better results are to be had elsewhere
- Price
- £299
-
Ricoh CX2 digital camera
A strong choice for the enthusiast?
15 October 2009 12:00 GMT
- The Good

- The Bad
- No optical viewfinder, high ISO image noise, longer zoom creates camera shake issues
- Verdict
- The Ricoh CX2 is undoubtedly a machine for the more advanced user, but offers image quality to match for those that know what they’re doing and is easy enough to use
- Price
- £300
-
Olympus Mju 7010 digital camera
Is this 12MP pocket snapper truly magical?
24 August 2009 19:41 GMT
- The Good
- User friendly operation, solid construction, portably pocket sized, quick and responsive for the most part
- The Bad
- Still images are flat and dull in appearance straight out of the camera (if not utilising magic effects filters), with loss of focus towards frame edges when shooting at maximum wide angle. No HD movies, which seems amiss when similarly priced rivals are offering this
- Verdict
- The Mju 7010 misses out on the latest must-have of HD video, but makes up in part by incorporating a 7x optical zoom and fun effects filters. Shame then that image quality is below par and in many other respects this model feels simply average
- Price
- £249
-
Sony S-Frame DPP-F700 digital photo frame - First Look
Can this show off your photos and your prints? 27 October 2009 12:00 GMT- The Good
- Can make borderless prints at the press of a button, card reader, nice screen.
- The Bad
- Form factor, no Wi-Fi, menu system is awkward
- Verdict
- This really is one of those moments where the end result could have been so much better
- Price
- £$200
-

Are you ready to go three-dimensional? 5 September 2009 17:58 GMT- The Good
- You can show off in the pub

- Verdict
- Although the idea behind the W1 3D is intriguing, until 3D becomes integrated into the displays in our houses and offices it seems barely worth considering
- Price
- £tbc
-
Sigma DP2 digital camera
Does this fixed lens compact live up to its DSLR-like claims?
1 September 2009 10:39 GMT
- The Good
- Excellent lens, wealth of hands-on control, works best when attempting images with a shallow depth of field
- The Bad
- Expensive, variable white balance if left in auto mode, washed out de-saturated colours, plasticky feel to build, occasional operational freezes
- Verdict
- The Sigma DP2 won’t appeal to everybody, and that’s largely by design. It works best when viewed as a compact back-up to an existing DSLR, or an experimental supplement to a more fully-featured, user-friendly digital compact
- Price
- £599
-
Canon PowerShot G11 digital camera
Do less pixels than the G10 make for a better camera?
26 October 2009 9:00 GMT
- The Good
- Solid feel construction, vari-angle LCD, better results at higher ISOs than we’ve witnessed from competing brands (if staying at or below ISO 3200)
- The Bad
- Standard definition video, still priced the same as an entry level DSLR (albeit a cheaper option than buying DSLR plus lens with equivalent focal range)
- Verdict
- Solid feel contender for enthusiastic amateurs wanting a more portable back up for their existing DSLR, without sacrificing too much in the way of manual control. Shame no HD video though, and the price may cause eyes to water
- Price
- £569
-

16 November 2009 14:21 GMT
- The Good
- Cheap, fully featured, 7-digit postcode support, Quick Stop feature
- The Bad
- Routing a bit random at times, usual iPhone GPS issues

- Price
- £25

- Email service, screen quality
- The Bad
- The SurePress screen is stiff, no multi-touch, OS looking stale, browser
- Verdict
- The BlackBerry Storm 2 is a vast improvement on the Storm. It's a better hardware design and better software build that gives you a better experience all around
- Price
- £price dependent on contract
-
TwitterPeek
What happened to convergence?
13 November 2009 8:58 GMT
- The Good
- Lets you check Twitter on the go, no monthly data plan, good keyboard
- The Bad
- Software element slow, Menu and UI at times drawn out
- Verdict
- While the TwitterPeek isn't for us (we currently have 12 devices on the desk capable of checking twitter) we can see why people might want it
- Price
- £$99
