- Solid feel construction, vari-angle LCD, better results at higher ISOs than we’ve witnessed from competing brands (if staying at or below ISO 3200)
- The Bad
- Standard definition video, still priced the same as an entry level DSLR (albeit a cheaper option than buying DSLR plus lens with equivalent focal range)
- Verdict
- Solid feel contender for enthusiastic amateurs wanting a more portable back up for their existing DSLR, without sacrificing too much in the way of manual control. Shame no HD video though, and the price may cause eyes to water

- Average image quality for its class, tricky to get a completely sharp shots when shooting handheld at extremities of the zoom, positioning of the built-in flash means that fingers can sometimes stray in front, zoom disabled in movie mode and no HDMI out
- Verdict
- The EX-H10 offers fair value for those wanting a bigger than average zoom but a smaller, pocket-sized camera. However, if image quality is the main concern, and we’re being picky, better results are to be had elsewhere

- Verdict
- An accomplished and well-equipped semi-professional camera with professional build and specification that’s capable of stunning results and at high resolution too. It looks expensive, but as a step down from canon EOS 1D Mk III, it makes a lot of sense indeed and without that much of a compromise on performance. This is simply a superb new EOS and one that should be a hot contender for your cash

- Small if chunky form factor, broad zoom range gives rise to more creative framing and compositional options than usual, HD movies with stereo sound
- The Bad
- Narrow and painful to use command lever at rear of camera, positioning of the built-in flash at front means that stray fingers can sometimes get in the way
- Verdict
- Fans of photographer Martin Parr who like their images almost unnaturally colour rich will find the Samsung WB550 a deserving companion for the occasional snapshot, and one that will bring them closer to the action to boot

- Big zoom capability from relatively compact dimensions, easy to use intuitive operation for the most part, good results achievable shooting handheld if plenty of light available
- The Bad
- Plasticy build, resolution drops when choosing faster capture setting, no RAW capture option, disappointing results at ISO 800 and above, zoom disabled when shooting video
- Verdict
- Like many big zoom cameras that try and do it all, there’s as much here to delight as disappoint. The wider creative possibilities offered by that broader focal range shouldn’t be underestimated, and, once used, going back to that 3x zoom compact will seem tough

- Verdict
- Ultimately the feeling you’re left with after handling the FX40 is, whilst perfectly acceptable viewed standalone, there’s simply not enough about it to stand out from the crowd
