OTA update due in the next few days for O2 customers

Palm has revealed that the latest update for its Palm Pre smartphone is heading across the pond to Europe.

Those with a Pre on Telefonica (so, O2) networks in the UK, Ireland, Germany, and Spain can expect an automatic update to webOS 1.3.1 "soon", the company says in a blog post.

The update will be delivered over-the-air to handsets whenever they are in range of Wi-Fi or 3G coverage within the next few days, so no need for Pre owners to lift a finger.

Highlights of the update include support for LinkedIn contacts and Yahoo calendar and contact information, the ability to forward messages in the Messaging app and a new Facebook for Palm app. It's interesting to note that unlike previous updates, there is no iTunes sync re-jig.

There's more info, including the full list of tweaks, bug fixes, improvements, enhancements and whatnot over on the Palm site.

12.2.3 improves security, stability, and performance

Microsoft has updated its Office 2008 for Mac software, with version 12.2.3 now available to download from the Help and Support section of Microsoft's website. ?

As well as the usual security and stability fixes, the update includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of a computer's memory by using malicious code.

As far as stability goes, 12.2.3 fixes an issue that causes Office 2008 applications to close unexpectedly while metafile issues with text spacing in Windows Office docs have also been addressed.

Improvements in Word means certain unexpected closures will be no more while similar closure issues in Excel have also been looked at, including the bug that meant the Workday Function would not recognise weekends and holidays, which we'd like to think was implemented originally by a mischievous coder.

There's similar stories across PowerPoint, Entourage and Microsoft Document Connection for Mac with the message to be drawn that you really want to install this update if you want to see all round improvements.

TomTom has now confirmed what Pocket-lint brought you news of back in early October - that its iPhone app is soon to receive a free software update.

The free update, which TomTom says is being submitted to Apple - almost as we type - for its approval, claims to bring "significant and advanced additional features".

This includes advanced lane guidance for difficult junctions in both landscape and portrait mode and text-to-speech functionality that will see street names and places read aloud as part of the spoken instructions.

In addition, TomTom's "Help Me" emergency feature from its in-car satnavs will be ported to the mobile platform, there'll be options to customise audio warnings, while maps and safety camera databases will see an update.

Finally the app will catch up with other offerings on the market by adding iPod player control "ensuring drivers can conveniently control their music from within the application".

We will bring you more on the Apple approval and the availability of the update as soon as we hear it.

As well as the option to change your gamercard colour

Some images have emerged of a forthcoming firmware update for the PS3 that introduces Facebook functionality to the games console. The integration with the world's biggest social networking site is already available on the rival Xbox 360, but not on the Nintendo Wii.

Also in the images is the option to change the colour of your gamercard, as well as a new interface for looking through photos that are stored on the console. Not quite as exciting as the Facebook integration, but may be of some interest to those who just aren't satisfied with the default gamercard colours.

It's not clear exactly when the next firmware update will be issued - right now these are just screenshots found on Sony's PlayStation website. What's clear, though, is that Sony needs integration with web services - and soon - to compete with the Xbox, which is rolling out similar features at an ever-increasing rate.

Apple?has moved to fix a number of bugs in its latest operating system,?Snow Leopard, with the release of version 10.6.2.

The new 499.9MB download is recommended for all users and "includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac," says Apple.

The software update, which doesn't feature anything but fixes, has been rumoured to?remove Intel Atom support?for the OS, locking out Hackintosh users who've decided to put the Apple OS on a non Apple devices like the Dell Mini 10.

Although Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro range uses Intel processors it doesn't offer any machine with Intel's Atom processor, allowing it to remove the support and only affect what it deems as illegal machines.?

The full list of listed fixes are:

?

an issue that might cause your system to logout unexpectedly

a graphics distortion in Safari Top Sites

Spotlight search results not showing Exchange contacts

a problem that prevented authenticating as an administrative user

issues when using NTFS and WebDAV file servers

the reliability of menu extras

an issue with the 4-finger swipe gesture

an issue that causes Mail to quit unexpectedly when setting up an Exchange server

Address Book becoming unresponsive when editing

a problem adding images to contacts in Address Book

an issue that prevented opening files downloaded from the Internet

Safari plug-in reliability

general reliability improvements for iWork, iLife, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, MobileMe, and iDisk

an issue that caused data to be deleted when using a guest account

For a full list see the READ link below.

If you're a hackintosh user that has been locked out by the new update let us know.

UPDATE: It's been confirmed that the 10.6.2 update removes support for Atom processors.

The Moblin Linux project, which aims to create a user-friendly, lightweight and media-rich interface for mobile devices, has announced the release of version 2.1 for Intel Atom-based devices. A video overview of version 2.0 is on Youtube, and there's a pile of screenshots of 2.1 available too.

The team behind the release states that this includes the "broadest feature additions, customer requested improvements, and overall polish to date". It includes a better browser, 3G support, Bluetooth support, an integrated app installer, localization improvements, a nicer UI and several bug fixes and performance upgrades over 2.0.

The release is 754MB, and can be installed using either a CD or a 1GB (or greater) USB stick. You'll need a netbook or nettop with an Intel Atom or Intel Core 2 CPU, but it's not compatible with the GMA-500, Nvidia or ATI graphics chipsets at the moment. A full list of compatible devices can be found on the team's website.

If you've got a netbook lying around that you don't use much, then give Moblin a try, and let us know what you reckon in the comments.

Back in August, we told you about InvisibleHand, a Firefox add-on which spends most of its time hidden but pops up if it discovers that you're looking at a product you can get cheaper somewhere else.

Commenters on our post loved it, and now you can try out the latest version of the add-on before anyone else. The company behind InvisibleHand has offered 200 Pocket-lint readers access to the new version, which adds Google search integration, a "more refined" notifications experience and support for German retailers.

?You can grab it right now by being one of the first 200 readers to head over to? ?http://preview.getinvisiblehand.com/ and use the code: "invisiblePL" without quote marks. When you've downloaded it, head on back here and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Parallels has launched a new version of its operating system virtualization software. Parallels 5 allows you to run Windows, Linux, OS/2 Warp, or whatever other operating system takes your fancy from the comfort of your Mac desktop.

The company reckons that there are plenty of enhancements. Aero is now available on Windows 7 and Vista, and the software is claimed to feature seven to eight times better graphics performance than its previous version. There's also improved USB functionality and speed, and the latest VT-x2 virtualization technologies.

Another intriguing new feature is "Crystal mode", which allows you to make Windows invisible so that you can only see the program. You can now copy/paste formatted text between operating systems too, and there's multi-touch support for gestures in Windows. The Apple remote can now control Windows apps too.

There's a "Safe Mode", for privacy and security, as well as DirectX 9Ex and Shader Model 3 support. If you prefer, you can turn off the Mac/Windows integration, giving a completely isolated virtual machine, if you're running insecure code.?Lastly, a feature called?Mac Look will allow you to skin Windows... er... windows so that they look like Apple ones, instead of the default XP, Vista or 7 skin.

Parallels 5 will be available shortly for ?60.

"To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the software that is eligible for the upgrade"

Across the Web, it's becoming common knowledge that it's technically possible to buy an upgrade edition of Windows 7 (which is considerably cheaper) and install a full version of the operating system from it. Microsoft has got wind of the hack, and has issued a stark warning that such practices are illegal.

Eric Ligman, Global Partner Experience Lead at Microsoft, has written a blog post that points out: "Technically possible does not always mean legal". He goes on to explain the differences between the EULA agreements of the two. The upgrade version very clearly states: "To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the software that is eligible for the upgrade".

He also clarifies the situation when it comes to OEM licenses - copies of Windows that came pre-installed on your machine. While boxed copies of Windows can be transferred between machines, OEM copies can't. That means that you can't pull out an ancient laptop with XP on and say "this is the one I'm upgrading" when you install Windows 7 on your netbook that shipped with Linux.

The beta or RC installs don't count either. Ligman says: "Those who don’t own a full previous version Windows license, and just downloaded the Windows 7 Beta, RC, or RTM code during the trial phases, the Windows 7 Beta, RC, and RTM trials are not qualifying licenses for the upgrade since they are just trial software, not fully licensed software".

?

Apple is set to unveil a software update for Apple TV that brings the version up to 3.0 and includes recent iTunes additions like iTunes LP and iTunes Extras. The news emerged after iTunes users were asked to agree to a new set of iTunes Store T&Cs.

A paragraph has been added to those T&Cs that reads: "iTunes LP and iTunes Extras Products are usable only on computers with iTunes 9 or higher and Apple TV with software version 3.0 or higher.

iTunes LP refers to the bonus content recently unveiled for certain major label albums. That content can include lyrics, liner notes, photos, videos and other bonus material. iTunes extras refers to a similar sort of thing but for video content, like DVD extras.

Software now available, shame the mouse isn't

Apple has released a software update for its new?Magic Mouse, allowing all Mac users running Leopard and Snow Leopard to use the new mouse even though stock of the new product can't be found in retail stores.

Apple has so far only offered the new touch sensitive mouse to customers who buy its new iMac computer following its announcement over a week ago.

While the company is famous for announcing a product and having it in stores the next, if not same, day Apple stores across the US are still without stock citing that it is "expected soon".

"You can expect once the software hits, the mouse will be available soon after", a store clerk told Pocket-lint in Apple's 5th Avenue store in New York before the software became available for download.

The update, which weighs in at 63.9MB, and 101MB when installed, will allow users of the mouse to scroll vertically and horizontally with a swipe of their finger rather than having to rely on a scroll wheel.

 Watch out for your savegames

If you've got an unauthorised Xbox 360 memory unit, then you might want to think about getting an official one ASAP - the forthcoming software update for the console will render it inoperable.

Xbox Live's Major Nelson posted on his blog that "one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360", adding "If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games".

If you have a hard-disk equipped 360 then it's not too big a deal - just shift everything onto your hard drive - but if not then you'll need to buy a licensed unit instead and copy the data across. To know whether it's licensed or not, you need a stamp that says "Licensed for Xbox 360" somewhere on the device or its packaging.

Mozilla has issued a new beta version of its Firefox browser - version 3.6 is now available to download in RC1 edition. Originally it was due for a mid-September release, but it slipped a little for reasons unknown.

The update includes version 1.9.2 of the Gecko engine - which Firefox uses to render web pages. That means that it should be a little speedier than before. Previous versions of the software have used version 1.9.1 and Mozilla says that it's possible that the browser will stop supporting 1.9.1 entirely with the release of Firefox 3.6.

Tab previews have appeared too - if you use ctrl-tab to switch between tabs (like you might use alt-tab to switch applications) then you'll get a preview window showing you which tabs you have open. Opera has this feature, but Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer don't at the time of writing. There's also the option to get thumbnail previews on the taskbar for Windows 7 users.

The build is available to download right now. You can grab it from the Mozilla Foundation's FTP.

Android 2.0 a few days away?

Google's had a whopping great big foam eclair delivered to its front lawn. If that means the same thing as when the team got a massive great big donut delivered, then version 2.0 of the Android operating system should be just days away. Each Android release has a cakey codename - Cupcake, Donut, and Eclair, with Flan to follow afterwards.

The release will just be to developers, though. Donut, which showed up in September in its giant foam incarnation, is only now starting to slowly roll out to consumers - starting with US T-Mobilers. We're still awaiting confirmation of when UK Android owners will be able to get their hands on the update.

Best estimates of Eclair arriving to consumers are Q2 2010, to match up with Motorola's second Android device - the Sholes handset. There's nothing official on that front yet, but the very moment we hear anything we'll be sure to let you know.

Opera has announced that Beta 10.10 of its desktop browser is now available. The beta includes Opera Unite, which adds a server to your web browser, meaning that you can interact with and serve content to other computers on the Web.

The beta includes a few apps which demonstrate this functionality. There's a photosharing service which creates web-based picture galleries, a chat client, a filesharing app which means you don't have to muck about with file uploads, a web server to host your own sites, a media player that can access your library of files from anywhere, and a "fridge" app where you can post notes on friends' virtual refrigerators.

"We invite developers all over the world to use their creativity and imagination to push the boundaries of what is possible with Opera Unite", Opera's CEO Jon von Tetzchener told Pocket-lint. "We are moving closer to our goal of reinventing the Web and are excited to see Opera Unite continue to evolve in powerful and compelling ways".

If you'd like to give it a go, then the beta is available to download now. Once you've got it installed, click the button in the bottom left corner of the browser, and log in or register an OperaID. Then just pick the app you want.

 New edition arrives

Tweetie, an iPhone application which acts as a mobile client for micro-blogging service Twitter, has issued an update which brings it to version 2. We've mentioned the app in the past as coming soon, but now it has arrived and it's live in the App Store.

There's a whole pile of new features, but the biggest are that it now has persistence (it remembers where you were when you switch it off), new message indicators, the ability to save draft tweets, speed boosts, cached tweets for offline reading and the ability to drag up to refresh - rather than hitting a refresh button.

Annoyingly the update isn't free for existing Tweetie users. It'll cost you ?1.79 (or $3 in the States) to upgrade, whether or not you bought the original version. That hasn't proved popular, but most reviews (including ours) reckon that it's worth the outlay - less than the price of a pint.

Go grab it, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Android update due "in the coming days"

T-Mobile's US branch has put out a press release that gives details of the rollout of Donut to owners of the G1 and the myTouch 3G - the latter of which is known in the UK as the HTC Magic. The company says that it's accelerated the rollout of the update after reports that the device would wipe after calling 911.

The update includes an improved Android market, a rolling-together of the camera, camcorder and gallery interfaces, an updated voice search app, and better search experience from the home screen. It also fixes bugs and improves the general performance of the device.

T-Mobile US users will be getting it "in the coming days", and T-Mo "strongly encourages" you to install it. Over in the UK, there's no sign of the update but the company's UK branch has promised us an update on the situation shortly. We'll keep you informed as soon as we hear anything.

 Via questionable work-around

In a cat and mouse battle, the style of which Apple is familiar with following similar exploits with the iPhone unlockers, Palm has re-enabled iTunes syncing for the Pre.

After Apple blocked the smartphone several times from syncing with iTunes via iTunes software updates, Palm has used a questionable work-around to make it possible again.

The solution is so questionable in fact, it has drawn the attention of the the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), as it fools iTunes into seeing the Pre as an iPod by product numbers reserved for Apple's hardware.

Palm makes no bones about its intentions - the release of webOS 1.2.1, "re-enables the ability of Palm media sync to work with the current version of iTunes", Palm's director of online communications, said in a blog post.

The ball is in Apple's court now, and it will be interesting to see if it responds with another tactical update, or takes things further via the USB-IF.

Promises considerable improvements for the device

Nokia's N97 handset had a difficult birth, with reviewers criticising the phone for failing to adapt Symbian to a touchscreen, and a lack of flair in general when it came to software on the handset. However, Pocket-lint has learnt that Nokia is now weeks away from delivering a software update to rectify the issues.

The v2.0 firmware is slated to arrive in mid-to-late October and includes a number of updates that should make the phone considerably more usable. The headline addition is that of kinetic scrolling, which allows the user to stroke down a list to view more options, rather than resorting to a fiddly scroll bar at the edge.

There's plenty of performance improvements promised, as well as more widgets, bug fixes and the ability to make alternate keyboard characters available with a long press of the appropriate key. Impressively, Nokia has managed to do all that and leave more memory available than previously, which does make you wonder how bad the coding was on release.

The update will be going live within the next few weeks. We're pressing Nokia for a more specific date and will update this post when that arrives.

 Complete overhaul of the interface

Truphone has announced that its popular Android app is getting an upgrade, to version 2.0. The application will be benefiting from a completely new user interface, better account management and it'll also now run natively - meaning it'll run faster.

Truphone, in case you're unfamiliar, allows you to make international calls for the price of a local call - which for most people is free. The call hits a local Truphone gateway, and is then transmitted over the Truphone network.

You can also call people on Skype, on Google Talk, and use IM on the aforementioned services, as well as allowing you access to your contacts on MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, AIM and Twitter.

Karl Good, Director of Consumer Apps for Truphone, told Pocket-lint: "The improvements to the Android application come from customer feedback and lessons learned from our first application to provide a slicker and faster user experience. This new Android application builds on our heritage of being a pioneer in the mobile industry, providing high quality voice services and making Truphone the smart choice for people with an international lifestyle".

If you've got an international lifestyle, then you can download the app from either the Truphone website or the Android market. You can also get Truphone apps for iPhone, BlackBerry and Nokia handsets.
