In the States, HP has announced the launch of the new HP iPAQ "Glisten" on the AT&T network.

Said to be a "feature-rich 3G world phone that meets the increasing demands of modern mobile professionals", the Glisten gets an AMOLED display.

Running Windows Mobile 6.5, the device boasts a touchscreen as well as a full QWERTY keyboard and five-way directional pad.

Other features and specs include Wi-Fi, GPS, a 3.1-megapixel cameraphone, a built-in speakerphone and Facebook preloaded.

The HP iPAQ Glisten is due to be available soon for $229.99 on a 2-year contract.

We enjoyed the teaser campaign for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness, even if it was rendered a little brief by the sudden announcement of all the details. Originally planned for November, we were wondering where the designer handset had got to, but now we know - it's coming to Selfridges in early December.

As previously reported, the device is "targeted at the older affluent mobile user who wants basic functions". It does talk, texts and the time, and that's about it. It doesn't even have a colour screen. However, that might be for design reasons - the phone also has a transparent lcd and "subtle illumination" of the buttons.

The phone measures 102 x 43 x 13mm, and weighs 70 grams. It's available in black only, and costs a whopping ?530, being sold exclusively at Selfridges. One for your Christmas list, perhaps?

The Motorola Milestone, the non-Verizon variant of the Droid by Motorola, has seen an online UK retailer put the new, high-end handset up for pre-order.

If SuperETrader is to be believed, we can expect the Milestone to touchdown in the UK on 7 December with a ?439-shaped wedge of cash required to take one home.

For that price, the site is offering the device unlocked and SIM-free, in black, with next-day delivery charged at an extra ?7.99.

We've previously asked Motorola when we might see the launch of the Android-based phone in the UK.

A Motorola spokesperson said: "We've not yet announced availability of this device in other markets, but look forward to continuing to expand our Android-based portfolio around the world".

The Motorola Milestone has launched on O2 in Germany, suggesting the operator may offer the mobile here too. We will keep you posted.

Google has announced the launch of a mobile version of the new Google Search results for movies with a light-hearted promo vid.

With the claim that the service makes it easier to plan a trip to the movies, the app works for iPhones, Palm webOS handsets and Android-powered devices.

To use it, go to google.com in the phone's web browser, search for "movies", and then tap on the "More movies" link. From there, Google says, you can either browse a list of movies or "select the 'Theaters' button to browse a list of theaters near you".

The new movie listings page includes buttons to play trailers on your phone, ratings and categories, movie posters, upcoming showtimes, as well as a list of the nearest cinemas.

The new search results for movies are available in English in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

New gPhone whispers suggest that Google is gearing up for no less than "an all-out assault on the mobile phone market".

The report, from The Times, states that the new, Google-branded handset we've heard about of late will encompass "the first comprehensive Google phone service with unlimited free calls", and a built-in, advanced version of Google Voice.

"For the first time", says the paper, "a single company will control everything from the software in users' phones to the services they use to make calls and surf the web".

The Google handset is said to be "one of the most advanced smartphones, with a large touchscreen display and a [Qualcomm] processor almost twice as fast as the one powering Apple's iPhone 3GS".

It's likely to offer the future version of Android code-named "Flan", which continues the cake-themed updates, and is said to bring high-speed 3D gaming.

As mobile phone operators may be unwilling to offer a device that offers free Google Voice calls, it's suggested that Google may offer the handset direct to the public, although this could push the cost up to over ?500 - but it's a price some disillusioned consumers may be willing to pay.

This latest report pegs a gPhone launch as early as next year in the US - we will keep you posted.

An interesting mobile phone network has just launched in the UK. Although owned by O2 and run by its execs, GiffGaff claims to be a completely separate "people-powered" operator, offering very cheap calls, texts and web browsing in exchange for customer involvement in the network.

You sign up, or get referred by an existing member, and then get sent a Pay-As-You-Go SIM card which will only work in unlocked handsets. You can then use that SIM card normally by topping up credit, or you can earn credit by doing certain things.

You earn ?5 by introducing a new member. You earn ?2 from a referral when people sign up, or 50p by telling friends about the service. There's other options too. Those points are doled out twice-yearly, in November and May.

Most impressively, there's a whole range of "tools" that consist of imagery and videos you can download. If you can turn one of those into an advert, and GiffGaff reckons it's good enough to use, you can become a "V.I.G." and get free texts, calls and web access for a year.

Speaking of web access, if you top up ?10, then you get unlimited browsing for 6 months. Calls are free to other GiffGaff users, and 8p per minute to other networks. Texts are free to GiffGaff users and 4p to other networks. GiffGaff reckons that makes it the cheapest operator around.

Here in the UK supermarket behemoth Tesco has announced it is to offer the Apple iPhone in time for Christmas - a real sign of how mass market the handset is to become.

Going back 2 years, at launch the iPhone was only available on one network - O2 - and through O2, Apple or Carphone Warehouse stores, but fast forward to the present and the mobile is set to be available on three operators, and through a growing network of retailers, including now, Britain's biggest supermarket.

Tesco will offer the phone on its O2-powered Tesco Mobile network, according to a statement from the retailing giant: "Tesco Mobile through its joint venture partnership with O2 is pleased to announce that it will shortly introduce iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in Tesco Phone Shops and online through Tesco Direct in the UK".

Those hoping for Tesco pricing on the handset will almost certainly be disappointed, O2 and Orange - the two operators that offer the mobile now - have kept contract and handset prices high and with very little difference between them.

"There are problems in the market. The First ELSE solves them", says Amir Kupervas, ELSE CEO, boldly, launching a handset that promises to change the way we think about our phones.

Today saw the launch to press and business partners of the First ELSE handset, a mobile device that promises to be centred around the user experience, rather than the phone.

Taking a swipe at Apple, Kupervas gave the example of grabbing your iPhone to capture a video of your kid: "the phone rings and you lose your Kodak moment", he says candidly. The First ELSE aims to have the phone as an application of the device, rather than being the centre of that device.

We were on hand to grab some shots of the new handset, which is going to be hitting markets in Q2 2010. ELSE Mobile were closely guarding the new models, but we managed to get up close and personal.

No word on operators yet, but we did spy representatives from Orange at the event, and Kupervas confirmed to us that the target markets were USA, Western Europe and Russia.

It seems Sony Ericsson's new high-end Satio handset is suffering from "issues" as the UK's biggest mobile phone retailer, Carphone Warehouse, as well as Phones 4U, have withdrawn the device from sale.

As the Satio is "temporarily" withdrawn from Carphone shop shelves, the chain is also offering to replace handsets for any customer who has experienced problems.

"From time to time we experience issues with new handsets, and their software, which may result in a customer experience that is below our usually high standards. We want customers to have complete confidence and satisfaction in the handsets they buy from us, which is why we have temporarily withdrawn the Sony Ericsson Satio from sale", The Carphone Warehouse says in a statement.

"We are working closely with Sony Ericsson to restock the Satio phone as soon as possible and will offer any customer who returns a faulty Satio an exchange of phone".

Problems reported with the Satio include freezing, crashing, battery problems and issues with the phone's interface.

"Sony Ericsson confirms that it has been made aware that a small number of consumers have experienced software issues with its Satio handset when using certain applications", Sony Ericsson says in a statement. ?

"Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U have temporarily removed the handset from sale to ensure that future customers do not have an adverse experience. Sony Ericsson is giving this matter its utmost priority and is working toward solving it as soon as possible".

A Vodafone spokesperson told Pocket-lint that the Satio it offers is a Vodafone variant that's been through testing. The operator says it's continuing to keep a track of the situation, but it is still offering the Vodafone Sony Ericsson Satio for sale.

We've yet to hear if other operators that offer the handset will also be stopping sales or offering exchanges, but we'll update this post as we do.

The "First ELSE", described as a new "state-of-the-art mobile device" from Israeli design house Emblaze Mobile has finally been unveiled at a London launch event which Pocket-lint attended.

The First ELSE focuses on a "unique user experience" with the claim being that a user can interact with the device's features - such as phone, GPS or camera - "in the same way they interact with the equivalent stand-alone devices used on a daily basis outside of the mobile experience".

Powered by the Linux-based "ELSE Intuition", a new mobile platform jointly developed by software co Access, the First ELSE can run multiple applications simultaneously with its TI OMAP 3430 mobile processor.

Specs for the new UMTS/HSDPA handset include a 3.5-inch, 854 x 480 resolution capacitive touchscreen display with tactile feedback, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, a 5-megapixel camera, GPS and A-GPS as well as proximity, ambient light and tilt sensors.

The device is expected to go on sale to consumers in 2010 - we will keep you posted.

Nokia has announced two new 3G slider phones, the Nokia 6700 slide and Nokia 7230, said to be "made for the design-conscious consumer and optimised for socialising and sharing with those closest to you".

Available in a range of colours the Nokia 6700 slide and Nokia 7230 are clearly aimed at the mid-market.

Possibly the most colourful Nokia release yet, the Symbian S60 6700 slide will go on sale in a choice of six vivid colours - pink, red, blue, aluminium, lime and purple.

With a compact, modern design and an aluminium finish, the handset boasts a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, the ability to edit and upload pics on the go.

Other specs include a 2.2-inch display, FM radio and music player, and support for up to 16GB microSD memory cards.

The Nokia 7230 gets a 3.2-megapixel camera, 2.4-inch display and what's said to be quick access to email, instant messaging and social networks on the go. It will be available in graphite and pink.

While Vodafone got the exclusive on the new HTC HD2 for a few short weeks, the high-end Windows phone is now available in the UK through O2.

O2 has offered various HTC-made phones before, but the HD2 marks the first time the operator has allowed an actual HTC-branded device live on its network.

The new HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone offers a 4.3-inch multi-touch display, a speedy Snapdragon processor, a 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS and HSDPA.

"The HTC HD2 is the first HTC branded phone to be sold on O2. We love the large screen and combination of Windows Mobile 6.5 with HTC Sense", says Steve Alder, general manager devices for O2 in the UK.

"We are proud to be the home of smartphones and the HTC HD2 adds a new dimension to the range of devices we offer to our customers".

Full tariff details are to be confirmed while the website is being updated, but O2 tells us the HD2 will be avialable for free on a ?45 per month, 18-month contract - which is a fiver dearer than Voda.

American computer manufacturer Dell has announced the launch of its new Android-based smartphone, the Dell Mini 3i, on China Mobile.

The global debut of the phone in China sees the new handset available in "red passion" or the slightly dubious sounding "oiled bronze".

More specs for the device have now been revealed and we can report the quadband GSM/EDGE 3i offers a 3.5-inch, 640 x 360 widescreen display, built-in GPS, a 3-megapixel camera with video capture, flash and auto-focus, Bluetooth and a microSD card slot supporting cards up to 32GB.

In China, the Mini 3i will support China Mobile's "Mobile Market" app store, while Dell says the phone's features may well change as it launches across other operators around the world - "feature sets may vary depending on the needs of mobile operators".

Brazil's Claro network is due to offer the handset by the end of the year, but considering this warning Brazilians should hang on for confirmation of specs.

Palm has revealed that the latest update for its Palm Pre smartphone is heading across the pond to Europe.

Those with a Pre on Telefonica (so, O2) networks in the UK, Ireland, Germany, and Spain can expect an automatic update to webOS 1.3.1 "soon", the company says in a blog post.

The update will be delivered over-the-air to handsets whenever they are in range of Wi-Fi or 3G coverage within the next few days, so no need for Pre owners to lift a finger.

Highlights of the update include support for LinkedIn contacts and Yahoo calendar and contact information, the ability to forward messages in the Messaging app and a new Facebook for Palm app. It's interesting to note that unlike previous updates, there is no iTunes sync re-jig.

While BlackBerry maker RIM has launched a variety of its consumer-aimed 8000 series Pearls, a next-gen version has yet to emerge - until now.

There images, leaked by CrackBerry, show the new handset in all its angular glory, and from the finished state of the phone, suggest an imminent launch.

The 3G BlackBerry Pearl 9100 follows previous models by offering a smaller BlackBerry form factor with a SureType keypad.

Specs are yet to be revealed, but we'll keep you posted.

The?Sony Ericsson Xperia X10?is expected to be hitting AT&T?in the US when it eventually launches in February, if the spec sheet is to be believed.

According to Android news site, Phandroid, the specs for the Sony Ericsson first Android powered handset suggest that it will be going to the US mobile phone operator who also has the iPhone based on the radio bands the handset will offer.

According to the tech specs, the phone will come with GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 and UMTS/HSPA 800/850/900/1700/1900/2100, however will not offer UMTS HSPA 900/1700 for phones sold in the Americas.

While to most that will mean very little, it means AT&T will be the only carrier in the US who is able to support the handset.

There is currently no official word from either AT&T or Sony Ericsson.

Casio has released its second rugged handset in the US on Verizon hoping to appeal to the more adventurous phone user.

The Casio G'zOne Rock is a clamshell handset that looks like it could take a beating. On the inside there is a 2.1-inch colour screen, standard keypad (not QWERTY), Bluetooth, while the outside offers a 2-megapixel camera with LED flash.?

The phone hits the MIL-STD 810F standard meaning you can drop it down the toilet, throw it on the floor and generally go most places on the planet (read building site) without fear of it breaking.

Those who do adventure out into the wilds can be safe in the knowledge that the handset also offers a digital compass, walking counter, thermometer, daily tidal graphs, sunrise and sunset times and a moon calendar.

It's out on Verizon very soon.

A new Motorola handset has emerged from the mists of the Internet as an as-yet-unconfirmed coming-soon Android device.

The Motorola "Motus", said to be due an official announcement in early 2010, has been spotted in this oh-so-blurry spy shot sent into an Android fan site.

Looking a little like the new DEXT, or CLIQ depending on which side of the pond you're on, the Motus is said to offer a 3.1-inch HVGA screen, a 5-megapixel camera with flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS and run Android 1.5 with the Motoblur interface.

Design-wise the handset gets a reverse flip keyboard and a rear directional touchpad adding serious weight to CellPassion's speculation it could launch as the "Backflip" a name recently registered in the EU by Motorola.

The?Nokia N900?has gone on sale in the US on Wednesday for a $649 unsubsidised after the mobile phone manufacturer failed to find a carrier to offer the handset.?

Not deterred by the lack of interest from the likes of Verizon or AT&T, Nokia has opted to go it alone:

"Consumers from every segment of the population are looking for more out of their mobile device - more power, more ability, more connectivity", said Alessandro Lamanna, vice president, Retail Sales, Nokia - hoping people would quickly jump at the opportunity to buy the new handset.

The Nokia N900, which is the first from the Finnish company to sport the new?Maemo?operating system, is available in a black finish and will retail for ?649 through Nokia flagship stores in New York and Chicago, nokiausa.com and various independent retailers and e-tailers including Amazon.com.

Sony Ericsson has hinted that it could launch a "PS3" app similar to that found on the Sony Ericsson Aino handset launched earlier in the year for the Android OS, when the company's new?Xperia X10?handset launches in February.

"It makes a lot of sense for it to be on other handsets", said Christopher David, head of developer and partner engagement at Sony Ericsson, before backing up that statement with an "it should be expected".

It is not certain at this time whether an app, if developed, would be restricted to the X10 and Nexus UX platform or be available to all?Android?handsets, but could mean that phone users opting for devices sporting the Google Android OS could access their PlayStation 3 and stream content to their phone from around the world, in a similar way to the Sony Ericsson phone or the PSP console.

The phone, which packs the same DLNA and wireless connectivity as the Aino, before building on the specs with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset and 4-inch screen, would be a perfect hardware device for such an app, something that David acknowledges.

"For it to work you would need wireless and DLNA connectivity," said David, after we tried to lure more than an "it's possible" answer from the man, when asked to engage in the new Sony Ericsson Nexus UX platform for the X10.

As for other apps to expect in the future? David was keeping quiet, however we did get a chuckle and acknowledgement of a "good question asked" as to whether Sony Ericsson's Play Now store, that allows users to download movies and music, would get an Android app of its own.

"You never know", was the official response with a wry smile.?

Sony Ericsson?has implied that it may bring its new?Android?skin destined for the?Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, the Nexus UX platform, to other devices.

"Nexus has been developed with a broader focus in mind", said Steve Walker, head of portfolio planning and communications for Sony Ericsson, following a question in an informal journalist briefing on whether we would see the new UI on other devices.

Although not going into specific details about specific products, Walker hinted in a further conversation with Pocket-lint that the new Nexus interface had been developed for devices of "all shapes and sizes".

The news comes as Sony Ericsson announces further details for its latest handset, the Xperia X10, which is due out in February 2010.

Working in what appears to be a similar way to HTC's Sense UI, Sony Ericsson will create a new "skin" for Android and Symbian OSes called the Nexus UX platform that offers a more graphical interface for users to get involved in.

Creating a dedicated WebSDK to accompany the new "skin", Sony Ericsson is hoping that by allowing developers to create apps specifically for Sony Ericsson handsets, it will help it gain the edge over other Android based handsets from Motorola or HTC.

"It is more than a UI skin", Christopher David, the man in charge of pushing the SDK to developers told us in a one to one interview. "The WebSDK, announced today allows developers to develop applications specifically for our phones and be sold in the PlayNow store".

Sony Ericsson will start the ball rolling with two applications, Timescape and Mediascape with the promise of many more over time.

Timescape will promise to manage all your communication with one person in one place, allowing you to browse through your conversations on Facebook, Twitter, photos, emails, and texts all in one go. Mediascape will focus on the multimedia elements to the handset, allowing you to search your phone for music, photos and videos as well as access interactive services like YouTube or PlayNow.

"We expect to have around a couple of hundred apps and plug-ins for Nexus at launch", David confirmed.

Other features of the new OS overlay include a feature that links faces with contact details at the touch of a button from within the phone on the fly.?

Sony Ericsson says that users will be able to download dedicated Sony Ericsson Android apps created using its WebSDK via its Play Now store rather than in Android Marketplace, however users will be able to access standard Android Marketplace as you would normally.?

The Xperia X10 is the first of many handsets that will use the platform, says Sony Ericsson, with the new handset acting as the flagship model when it hits stores in February.?

Nokia appears to be preparing to lose the Symbian operating system on its N-series range of top-end smartphones. ?In its place will be Maemo - the Linux-based operating system that powers the forthcoming N900 handset.

The claim was made by Maemo's marketing team during a London-based N900 event. If correct, it would see the company phase Symbian out gradually - some devices that use it are currently in development and they'll be released as planned. However, no new devices with Symbian on will be created.

Nokia was apparently "surprised" at the level of enthusiasm shown towards the N900 and Maemo by the development community. Symbian won't be dumped entirely - it'll still be used on the X-series and E-series range of devices. However Nokia has no doubt been stung by the fact that many reviewers, including Pocket-lint, criticised Nokia's current flagship handset - the N97 - for its interface and software.

The Samsung Galaxy i7500's little brother - which we knew was incoming - has finally been made official.

The new handset will launch as the Samsung Galaxy Spica i5700 and offers DivX support, DNSe 2.0, a 3.5mm ear jack and measures in at 13.2mm thick.

Previous reports suggested it boasts the same AMOLED touchscreen, Wi-Fi and Android OS as its predecessor, but storage is down to 1GB and camera is down to 3.2-megapixel, without a flash.

As an Android device, the Galaxy Spica supports the full suite of Google services, including Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, and Google Talk.

Samsung says the device is already out in Europe - a UK launch is planned but we're waiting to hear on availability.

Orange has announced a new service for Twitter users that'll allow them to send images to the microblogging service by attaching them to MMS messages. It's called "Snapshot" and is apparently the first service in the world to offer that functionality.

Oh, and Orange UK has turned on Twitter too. That means that Orange users can send either texts or picture messages to 86444 and have them appear on Twitter, as well as on the Snapshot website, where you can snoop on the messages that people have been sending.

There's no charge beyond a regular SMS or MMS fee, and the shortcode is the same as the one used by O2 and Vodafone to avoid confusion. Orange is the third UK operator to enable Twitter messages, leaving T-Mobile and 3 in the not-enabled-yet camp.

Pocket-lint's vigorous vetting process means that all the gadgets up for nomination have to have been seen by a member of the Pocket-lint team (so far over 600) and have to have been available in the UK between December 2008 and December 2009.

The awards, voted by a panel of leading gadget journalists from around the world, including the staff from the Pocket-lint team, will decide the real must-have gadgets of the year, rather than those simply deemed cool or anticipated, being the definitive guide for consumers looking to buy gadgets.

Winners will be announced at an Awards evening in London on Monday 7 December.

In the States, LG has announced the launch of the Shine II, describing it as "another flash of brilliance in their product line".

Following on from the Shine's multi-million-selling success, the next-gen handset is available at AT&T and stays faithful to the original Black Label handset as far as overall design goes.

Featuring polished round edges and an "elegant" slider design, the LG Shine II boasts stainless steel construction and a 2.2-inch mirror LCD display.

There's also a music player and stereo Bluetooth, a 2-megapixel camera with flash and video recording complete with basic editing software.

The LG Shine II will be available at AT&T across the States from 22 November. Pricing has been revealed as $119.99 after a mail-in rebate for a 2-year agreement.

A UK release has not yet been announced for the Shine II, but we will keep you posted with news.

A new BlackBerry-flavoured rumour has emerged suggesting RIM is not planning on putting all its future eggs solely in the touchscreen basket.

While RIM's first touchscreen handset, the Storm, got mixed reviews for its click-touch screen, the second gen version, the Storm 2 (available now) is said to have a greatly improved touchscreen interface.

However, this maybe a step too far for many BlackBerry-using diehards who favour RIM's smartphones for their QWERTY keyboards.

If the rumours are to be believed, RIM is busy prepping a touchscreen slider that will offer consumers "the best of both worlds".

The rumour has gained pace with a recent research note from Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu who says the new handset, "resembles a cross between the Storm 2 and one of RIM's non-touch QWERTY devices".

"It's currently in the prototype stage and is likely to ship sometime in 2010", reports Electronista quoting Wu's research.

Sony Ericsson has revealed a little more about the launch timescale for its latest Xperia-branded handset, the X10.

Via a pre-order page on its site, the phone manufacturer has revealed that the new high-end handset is due in February.

We knew the X10 was getting a Q1 launch, but this is the first time the phone's debut has been pinned down to a month - although the exact text reads: "Expected launch - Feb '10".

Those who like the look of the new Android device can pre-register their interest now to be kept informed of progress.

The touchscreen X10 offers a 4-inch display, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, an 8-megapixel camera, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and Sony Ericsson's new Mediascape and Timescape applications.

Nokia has unveiled a new version of its 5330 handset - the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition, described as "an entertainment hub" that combines the EU's preferred brand of mobile TV - DVB-H, social networking, music and gaming "in one compact 3G device".

With a QVGA 2.4-inch screen, the phone has a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as built-in speakers and boasts Nokia's Electronic Program Guide and a battery life for watching TV for 6 hours.

Nokia vice president Mark Selby says: "The introduction of the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition responds to the arrival of DVB-H broadcast mobile TV networks in new markets and offers an affordable device for new and existing customers alike".

DVB-H mobile TV services are currently available in Austria, Finland, Ghana, Kenya, India, Italy, Namibia, Nigeria, Netherlands, Philippines and Switzerland. Nokia says "additional commercial launches can be expected during the next 12-18 months in more than 20 countries".

The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition will cost 155 euros before taxes and subsidies.

Google has published the source code of Android 2.0 - the next version of its operating system, and the one that appears on the recently-released Motorola Droid. Until now, only Motorola and HTC had access to the source, but Google has just opened it up for everyone.

The software update features multiple email accounts, exchange support, new address book functionality, a combined inbox, better search, an improved camera, an improved keyboard, a better browser, and more useful calendar, as well as Bluetooth 2.1, better media playback, and more options for developers.

Hackers have already ported the update over to the G1, the very first Android handset to be released. The team behind the port - Cyanogen - said that the handset runs "really well, fast and smooth" with the 2.0 software. They haven't yet got audio/video playback working, but it's likely not to be far away.

For those unwilling to hack their handsets, though, you'll need to wait for a patch from your phone manufacturer. Expect one to be on the way - we'll let you know when they're released.

The Palm Pixi, the second webOS handset from the smartphone company, is now available in the US. With a candybar form factor, as opposed to the Pre's slider design, the new phone is on sale exclusively through Sprint.

American consumers wanting the new device will need to stump up $99.99 (after a $100 rebate) and sign up to a 2-year contract.

The slimline 3G Pixi gets a 2.63-inch, 320 x 400 resolution touchscreen, Qualcomm’s MSM7627 chipset, Microsoft Exchange push email, built-in GPS, a 2-megapixel camera with flash, accelerometer, media player, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, 8GB memory, microUSB connector and a 3.5mm stereo jack.

Here in the UK O2, which currently offers the Palm Pre, has expressed an interest in offering the Pixi, but a launch is yet to be confirmed.

After what seems like decades of speculation, Dell has finally confirmed that the company has a mobile phone ready for launch. The Dell Mini 3i Android-based smartphone will be hitting the shelves on China Mobile later this month, while Brazil's Claro network will have it by the end of the year.

Both networks represent a serious numbers game with 42 million users across the Americas on Claro and China Mobile being the largest in the world, and together they provide a vast platform for the Texas computer manufacturer to enter the mobile market.

Details on the handset itself seem to be as speculated, with a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen on a 360 x 640 pixel display. No word as to when or where else in the world it might arrive next but implications in the Dell press release are that the 3i will be part of a larger Dell Mini 3 smartphone series.

As many of you will know Vodafone 360 is a new set of internet services for the mobile and PC which gathers all contacts from your phone and social networks in one place.

Available in "iridium black" and "neon rush", the M1 boasts a 3.2-inch touchscreen display, 3.2-megapixel camera, built-in GPS, push email, audio and video playback, up to 10 hours talk time, 1GB memory expandable with microSD card and Bluetooth 2.0.

The Vodafone 360 Samsung M1 is now available for free on 24-month contracts from ?20 per month.

A user at gadget teardown site iFixit by the name of Dr. Wreck, has decided that what he really wants to do with his shiny new Motorola Droid smartphone is to rip it apart, exposing its silicon underbelly for the benefit of gawping tech geeks on the Web.

According to the site, the handset was "quite a handful to take apart, having a multitude of hidden screws and latches". Unfortunately there weren't any secret messages or infrared QR codes, though. Most notable was that the QWERTY is slid out by two simple rails embedded in the screen chunk of the device.

Dr Wreck's been handed $300 for his time and dedicated effort - which we suspect he'll spend on a new Droid. For more images, head over to the full teardown on iFixit.

An image of what's said to be the first device from Samsung to feature its newly-announced "bada" mobile phone platform has hit the Web.

Coming hours after the bada announcement, and with bada phones not due until the first half of 2010 (the SDK has not yet been released) it's more likely this is a fan mock-up.

The image's online source GSM Helpdesk has not revealed where the image came from but speculates it "might as well be a 'Photoshop case' from a very creative Samsung fanatic".

The Palm Pre - launched in the UK back in October - has now being stocked by high street giant The Carphone Warehouse. O2 has the UK exclusive on the Pre (for now) and is offering the handset for free on ?35 per month, 2-year contracts.

From a customer point of view the only difference is that there's now more places you can pick up a Pre, but from a business standpoint, seeing the new webOS device hit the shelves across CPW's many stores might make a difference in sales volume, especially in the lead up to Christmas.

Sales stats for the device aren't known, but O2 said of the Pre's launch that it sold more Pre handsets on the day than the total number of handsets that it normally sells on the average day.

The HTC HD2 is now available on Vodafone in the UK, as we'd reported it would be.

The big-hitting Windows Phone handset is available for free on ?35 per month, 2-year contracts. There's also a ?40 per month, 2-year effort if you need more bundled minutes.

If you'd prefer an 18-month contract then you'll have to stump up ?40 per month while again there's also a ?45 per month option that offers more free minutes.

There are no 12-month plans and there's no pay as you go option from Vodafone right now, so it looks like if you do fancy this high-end mobile you're going to have to get the pen out and sign away a fair chunk of your mobile life, as is becoming the norm with high-end handsets.

The new HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone offers a 4.3-inch multi-touch display, a speedy Snapdragon processor, a 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS and HSDPA.

Pocket-lint was there to get the first hands on as LG revealed the LG GW620 Android phone last night in London. As promised, the handset is a QWERTY slider with an HVGA 3-inch LCD. Its features include a 5-megapixel AF camera and "high-res" video recorder, offering one-touch uploads as well as DivX and Xvid support and a 3.5mm audio jack.

On the software side, Android has very much been given reign to rule the roost. There are touches of a subtle S-Class still, but they're non-invasive and can be switched off altogether if you find that they get in the way.

So far the handset has not been given its more friendly name due to a few legal wranglings. Overseas it's known as the LG Eve, but the company told Pocket-lint that this will not be the name adopted in the UK. The name is likely to reflect a whole family of QWERTY silder phones which LG has been developing and we'll all find out when the handset goes on sale in Q1 next year.

We were also told to expect many more LG Androids including full touchscreen models in 2010.

Samsung is set to ditch the Symbian?OS bringing with it a major blow for the operating system.

According to reports online, Samsung's senior VP Don Joo Lee has confirmed that it will dismiss Symbian from its smartphones.

Phasing out the OS, the phone manufacturer is said to be opting for Windows Mobile and Android moving forward in 2010.

The OS has struggled in recent months to compete with a barrage of new operating systems for mobile phones such as webOS from Palm and Android from Google.

The news comes hot on the heels of an announcement from Samsung of its own open mobile platform - Samsung bada.?With an SDK due to be available in December the first bada-powered mobile phones are expected in the first half of 2010.

UPDATE: Samsung has denied it is to ditch Symbian.

While our brows are still furrowed by T-Mobile's assertion that the Windows Mobile 6.5 HTC HD2 will offer Android Market apps, we're happy to report the device is due an imminent launch on Vodafone.

Those hoping to get their hot little hands on the new smartphone with its 4.3-inch multi-touch display, speedy Snapdragon processor, 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS and HSDPA need look no further than Vodafone with an announcement expected within the next 24 hours.

O2 is also said to be due to offer the device via Mobiles.co.uk for a minimum of ?40 a month on a 2-year contract if you want the handset gratis, so it will be interesting to see at which price point Vodafone will be placing the high-end handset.

We will bring you all the official news - including pricing, tariffs and exact availablity - as soon as we hear it.

UPDATE: It's now official - from free on ?35 per month, 2-year contracts.

The Vodafone Pocket-lint Gadget Awards 2009 Best Mobile Phone nominations are probably the ones we've all been waiting for. The smartphone industry is ablaze and every year we see more and more impressive handsets as the mobile becomes so much more than simply the telephone it once started out as. They are our pocket computers, our access terminals, our windows on the world and it's time to let us know which ones deserve that extra special praise for their impact in 2009. Which one gets your vote?

Android phones

After a very slow start Android is all the rage right now. Until a matter of months ago, HTC dominated with last year's G1, as well as the Magic - which is likely to be in the running - and the HTC Hero, on which it's very hard not to place a heavy bet for the winner of this award. That said, of late we've seen some really impressive contenders with an awesome come back from Motorola with the QWERTY based DEXT and the pure touch Droid.

Never ones to miss the boat, Samsung brought out the Galaxy i7500 and the imminent arrival of the LG GW620 brings the other Korean giant in on the action as well. The T-Mobile Pulse aka Huwaei's Android effort and the HTCs Eris and Tattoo have also shown that consumers can get a piece of Google's mobile OS at a reasonable price, while the launch of the impressive looking Rachael, or Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, makes Nokia's absence look all the more obvious.

Palm & Apple

The shotgun method is not something you'd associate with these manufacturers' approaches to the mobile phone industry in 2009. Nonetheless, between them they've had arguably the biggest impact of all. We were blown away by the Palm Pre at CES in January with its new OS, slideout QWERTY and beautiful touchscreen - even if we did have to wait the best part of a year for the thing to turn up in the UK - and the Apple iPhone 3GS - once Stevie J and friends had decided how to spell it - did just enough to keep itself on top.

More recently, the Palm Pixi has arrived as the lite version of the Pre and doubtless we'll see more webOS devices in the future. So, will Apple be following suit with an iPhone mini all of its own? One for 2010, perhaps.

BlackBerry

The other mobile cult all of its own is the church of RIM and its beloved BlackBerrys. The company has seen an impressive rise in market share and profits in 2009 with its more consumer facing approach. Handsets like the Curve 8520 and the Bold 9700 have proved as popular as their family heritage would suggest and even the second installment of the BlackBerry Storm seems finally to be going down as its name would have us believe. The only question is whether these recent announcements have left it too late for us all to rave about.

Other QWERTYs

If the OS and the touchscreen have been the biggest mobile trends of late, then the move to QWERTY keyboards has to be the next one down. While they used to be the preserve of RIM and a select few business models, the rise of the smartphone with e-mailing, browsing and IM needs has caused a greater desire for ease and speed of typing on our handsets. Most of the mobile makers have caught onto it and you can now buy the things on PAYG or just cheap contracts with basic phones.

The youth messenger market can now get hold of finger tappers like the LG GW300, the pink Samsung B3310 and Samsung Genio/Corby TXT if you're not man enough for the colour scheme on the other model. Go one step up and there's the slightly more mature LG GW520, the Nokia Surge/6760 and the Nokia E72 - the upgrade to the hugely popular business model of 2008. Last of all, there's the QWERTY to end all QWERTYs with the recent launch in the States of the TwitterPeek handset with the kind of keyboard that'll give your desktop a good run for its money.

Windows Mobile

With Android the rising star of 2009, it's easy to forget that Microsoft launched a new version of its mobile OS as well. Windows Mobile 6.5, or Windows Phone, may not necessarily be the choice of the consumer but the manufacturers can't get enough of it and, to give it its dues, it is getting better. HTC is one of the platform's largest supporters, despite the affiliation with Android, and both the HTC HD2 and the HTC Touch Diamond 2 have turned out to be very impressive implementations of the system.

Both the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 and Toshiba TG01 have taken the custom UI approach to Windows Phone and come up with a couple of handsets to make the consumer's choice that much harder, while Samsung launched an entire update to the OMNIA family with four whole models, each suited to a particular user.

Until the last few weeks, Acer has been solely focused on the Microsoft mobile OS as well with a mass of interesting, if not entirely refined, set of phones and, of course, the LG GM750 is a quick toe in the water for the Korean company while it makes up its mind which way to jump from its own S-Class interface - indeed if it intends to jump at all.

Nokia

It's not been the best of times for the company that still remains the number one in the mobile phone market. Yes, its presence in the developing world is incredible but the Finnish giant's grip on the West has slipped. With Symbian OS the platform of choice, there's still be some noteworthy releases including the headline N97 and N97 mini as well as the super snapper that is the N86.

The business E range is probably one of the strongest and certainly most interesting sectors beyond that, and we've had the pleasure of upgrades like the E52 and the E72 to enjoy over 2009, as well as the intro of the E55 candybar as well.

The classic series has been as well designed as ever with perhaps the Nokia 6700 classic the pick of the lot. Otherwise its all been about the much debated Comes with Music push and the Xpress Music handsets in the shape of the 5530 and the more premium touchscreen X3 and X6 devices, that could well find themselves doing better than some might think in the overall rankings.

Finally, Nokia wouldn't be Nokia if it wasn't trying something crazy and this year it's been the Nokia 7705 Twist. We'll let you judge that one for yourselves.

LG

With grit like determination to be the number two handset provider in the world, LG has been pushing, showing and innovating its heart out over 2009. While the Cookie continues to be its standout success, the likes of the LG Arena and new versions of both the Chocolate and Viewty in the LG BL40 and Viewty Smart have shown some serious intent, if lacking that final touch of class.

More recently, the LG BL20, or even newer Chocolate, looks to make its Black Label sibling that little bit more affordable along with the launch of the GD510 Pop, but the big design oohs and ahhs were saved for the LG GD900 see through phone and the LG Watchphone. Seen anybody actually wearing one yet?

Samsung

As well as being early on both the Windows Phone and Android markets, Samsung has been on a steep learning curve in all mobile departments throughout 2009. The company has been the first to test out the Vodafone 360 platform with the touchscreen H1 as well as briefly holding the record for the fastest phone in the west with the Samsung Jet.

Having finally perfected the touchscreen, the company has brought out more in the Tocco range for all levels if customer to play with and even gone AMOLED with superb handsets like the HD video shooting Samsung i8910. Beyond that, Samsung was the first to reach the 12-megapixel cameraphone mark with the Samsung Pixon12 and has added a couple of impressive innovations like the Beat DJ for the music obsessive and the solar panelled E1107. Generally a very good year for Samsung.

Sony Ericsson

There was a very long tease for Sony Ericsson fans this year. With the Satio and Aino shown off what seems like decades ago, news of the update to the Xperia back in March and Rachael round the corner since back in the summer, we're all just pleased that they made it in time for the 16th November Pocket-lint awards cut off.

Mercifully, while we were waiting for the big guns we had the pleasure of Maria Sharapova's company in the sale of the Sony Ericsson T707 plus, the eco-friendly Sony Ericsson Naite and the T715 more recently to pick up some native Twitter access. It wasn't a prolific year for the Japanese mobile maker but perhaps its biggest unsung hero was the continuation of the Walkman range with the likes of the Sony Ericsson W995 - one of the most complete mid-range handsets a person could buy. Well worth a shout.

The rest

Naturally, the last 12 months has come with its range insanely expensive luxury designer phones for equally insane people with obscenely insanely large wallets. See the Mobiadio Grand Pioneer, gold Nokia Carbon Arte, Motorola Aura Diamond and Tag Heuer Lamborghini handsets for just four of such examples. We wouldn't presume to deny yourselves and the panel of judges the chance to name any of them mobile phone of the year, but if you'd rather something more sensible, then spare a brief thought for the Land Rover S1 from Sonim and a good hour of pondering whether INQ really has cracked it this time with the INQ mini 3G.

Nokia has gone down the rather bizarre and twisted route for its teaser campaign for the new Nokia N900, following in the footsteps of Verzion's Droid sci-fi launch.?

The phone-come-tablet started shipping today and is the company's latest hope in holding off poor performance and a growing unrest for its Symbian OS.

Although the Verizon Droid and N900 aren't connected, the Nokia video, currently playing out on YouTube, features a Cloverfield style shoot of a group of men talking about a new mobile phone in what looks like an interrogation room.?

Samsung has announced the launch of its own open mobile platform, "Samsung bada" with an SDK due to be available in December.

Bada will mean developers can create applications for millions of new Samsung mobile phones.

The name bada means ocean in Korean (we're certainly hoping Microsoft is planning a search app for the platform) and was said to be chosen "to convey the limitless variety of potential applications which can be created using the new platform".

Samsung says bada is simple for developers to use - "one of the most developer-friendly environments available".

The first bada-powered mobile is due in the first half of 2010.

It seems Vodafone is not the only operator to get its claws out in a timely manner as Orange becomes the second operator to offer the iPhone in the UK, as 3 has revealed - on the day of the Orange iPhone launch - it has put in a formal complaint to the ASA about Orange's new advertising campaign.

While Orange and O2's price plans for the iPhone are very similar, it seems Orange is hoping to appeal to consumers on the strength of its 3G network with a new ?4 million "You're Covered" advertising campaign.

However, 3 is taking issue with Orange's claim that its 3G network "currently covers over 93% of the UK population - more than any other network", and has asked Ofcom to put measures in place for a more consistent way to of calculating coverage.

"We're confident that we have the biggest 3G network in the UK, both in terms of geographic and population coverage, built on a 9192 site network that grows by around 150 sites each week", says 3.

"But it's no surprise consumers are being confused about coverage. Right now each operator chooses a population coverage measurement that suits it. We currently claim 92% coverage. We could use a measure used elsewhere in the industry that would boost our claimed population coverage to 95% in an instant, without reaching a single extra customer".

"We're happy to open up our network to a third-party to judge. We"d like to see a common standard applied across the industry, to give consumers a more realistic picture of 3G coverage available to UK consumers on all networks".

LG has announced a few more details of its first Android smartphone, the LG GW620, that launches with a focus on social networking.

The GW620 is a QWERTY slider with an HVGA 3-inch LCD. Features include a 5-megapixel AF camera and "high-res" video recorder, offering one-touch uploads as well as DivX and Xvid support and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The device offers LG's "SNS Manager", claims to integrate all the user's social networking needs in "one convenient platform" for managing of multiple accounts while receiving real-time updates.

Unique to the LG GW620, there's "Auto Face-Tagging" and "Face To Action" that lets users tag a friend's face in a photo. The phone also has instant messenger, threaded SMS and real-time push email functions.

The LG GW620 is the first of a number of Android devices LG plans to introduce to the public in the coming year, says the company.

The LG GW620 will be available worldwide starting in Europe from now on, apparently - we will keep you posted with more as we hear it.

Vodafone has announced the BlackBerry Bold 9700 is now available to buy. If you want to get the handset for free, then you'll need to sign up to a ?35 per month, 2-year contract or a ?40 per month, 18-month contract. Business customers can purchase business price plans from ?30 per month.

T-Mobile has also announced it will be offering the new RIM handset, but its pricing comes in a wee bit higher at free from ?45 per month.

The Bold follow-up is a slimline QWERTY handset with HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, BlackBerry's push email service, a 3.2-megapixel camera, on-board GPS, media player, 3.5mm headset jack, plus 32GB of memory storage via an interchangeable microSD card.

O2 has confirmed it will be allowing customers to unlock their iPhones to work on different networks after they have served their full contract term.

On the 2-year anniversary of the iPhone going on sale in the UK, O2 has confirmed the news to Pocket-lint and says that iPhone customers wishing to leave O2 have to call customer services and ask them to unlock their iPhone.

Pay monthly customers who are not at the end of their contract will be required to honour it or pay up until its end.

iPhone Pay & Go customers who have had their iPhone for more than 12 months are entitled to unlock their devices too, but for a fee of ?14.97.

The news was initially revealed by none other than Matthew Key, the chairman and chief executive officer of O2 parent company, Telefonica Europe in a Q&A article in The Times.

In answer to the question: "Is there any truth in the rumour that after Orange and Vodafone are able to sell the iPhone you will not allow people to unlock their iPhone, even if they are out of their contract period?" Key states:

"There is absolutely no truth in that rumour. Once the iPhone becomes available on other UK networks, we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honour any outstanding contract period they have. At the end of their contract period, they are entirely free to move to another operator - though naturally we hope they won't want to!"

Nb. This post has been amended to correct the error that stated pay monthly customers would also have to pay the ?14.97.

It seems like viruses for the iPhone are on the increase, following the discovery of a security hole by a Dutch hacker. A worm has popped up that appears to be infecting jailbroken handsets in Australia.

The Ikee worm doesn't do anything terribly malicious - it changes the handset's wallpaper to an image of Rick Astley and then attempts to find more handsets to infect. However, it could easily be modified to steal contact info or log keypresses, which would be of considerably more concern.

As previously reported on Pocket-lint, the hole only affects jailbroken iPhones that are running an SSH utility and haven't had the default password - "alpine" - changed. Usefully, this virus will disable the SSH application from running, preventing the handset from being infected any further.

Apple hasn't yet commented, but as this issue only affects jailbroken handsets, it's unlikely we'll be hearing much from the big fruit on this one. In the meantime, if you're running an unlocked iPhone, go change your password. Here's how to do it.

Lawyer: Do these sound like the actions of a man who had all he could eat?

What am I talking about, and why have a started with a quote from a Simpsons episode? Well, because it's the same problem that is affecting the mobile phone industry at the moment, with neither Ofcom or the Advertising Standards Agency apparently bothered that consumers are being lied to on a daily basis every time they sign up to a mobile phone contract.

The frustration, and one that was experienced by Homer Simpson in the episode, comes down to the definition of Unlimited.

In my books and strangely enough in the dictionary Unlimited means:

Main Entry: un?lim?it?ed

Pronunciation: -li-m-td

Function: adjective

Date: 15th century

1 : lacking any controls : unrestricted 2 : boundless, infinite 3 : not bounded by exceptions : undefined

— un?lim?it?ed?ly adverb

However, talk to any mobile operator and the word "unlimited" seems to come with an astrix that highlights caveats or that the term is based on our "fair usage policy".

According to Orange, that "Unlimited" bundle means 750MB of data, far from what the dictionary describes above.

But why isn't the ASA or Ofcom clamping down on these unfair and misleading claims?

When we contacted Ofcom we got the following response:

"As far as I know, this is not something that Ofcom has published anything on".

Not published anything? Really? However they are happy to spend thousands investigating why people buy pirated DVDs on the Internet - surely they just go to torrent sites?

Meanwhile the ASA doesn't believe that mobile operators lying or being quiet about the terms and conditions of a data plan that could, potentially, cost you thousands of pounds over the course of a contract is that much of an issue.

"The ASA does not have guidance on the use of the term 'unlimited' as the ASA position is derived from the Advertising Codes and previous case history (our ASA case law)", an ASA spokesperson told Pocket-lint when we asked them what was what.

"In a nutshell, the term 'unlimited' can be used to describe a service that, if containing a fair-usage policy, will only affect the a-typical user. (i.e. the majority of users will not be affected.)"

So what's the solution?

I believe that mobile phone operators shouldn't be allowed to use the unlimited moniker unless it really is that. As mobile phones increasingly become the gateway to our digital lives on the go we are likely to be consuming more images, more video, more music and therefore more data.

I don't want to sign up to a contract where there is normally a termination fee if I haven't been made aware of all the facts before signing up.?

At the moment words like "Unlimited" are nothing more than lies, even if "a typical user" won't supposedly be affected.?

Although the ASA might consider "unlimited" an acceptable term for tariffs with data caps or fair usage policies, here at Pocket-lint, we don't. And as such, we are making a stand. We will no longer continue to use the word "unlimited" when the tariff it refers to clearly is no such thing.

We will also be sure to make such caps or usage limits apparent every time we cover news that refers to an "unlimited" deal.

Mobile phone retailer Phones 4U is exclusively offering the Nokia N97 Mini in white to customers from 6 November 2009. ?

Phones 4U also enjoyed an 8-week exclusive on the white version of the original N97 starting back in June this year.

Said to be "one of Phones 4U's most successful handset launches to date", the retailer is hoping the white model of the mini-me handset will prove simialarly popular.

With stainless steel cues and sleek white casing, the white Nokia N97 Mini is available now free on a ?35 a month contract on Orange or Vodafone.

Those that trade in their existing Nseries handset however, can get the new phone for free on a ?25 a month contract.

Apple is rumoured to be testing some prototypes of a next-generation iPhone that includes an RFID reader built in. According to Einar Rosenberg, who runs LinkedIn's Near Field Communications group, "the reaction was very positive that we can expect this in the next gen iPhone".

We're a little skeptical. Not that Apple is testing RFID in iPhones, after all - it's patented the idea, but that it'll be showing up in the next iPhone in June 2010. On the one hand, near-field communications is a growing industry, but on the other hand there's relatively few places you can use it right now (outside of the Oyster Card system on the London tube network).

Rosenberg posits that it could be used to link iPhones to Macs for syncing purposes, which is possible. We think it's more likely, though, that this is an extension of Apple's new iPod-touch based purchasing systems for Apple store staffers, and could make its way into a more enterprise-targeted product.

Spotify has announced on its blog that the previously-promised Spotify Phone is now available from 3 UK, in both its retail stores and online.

The deal comprises of an HTC Hero preloaded with the Spotify Android app, a 24-month subscription to Spotify Premium, 750 minutes and unlimited texts and data for ?35 per month over 24 months. The phone itself will require a ?100 initial outlay.

If you like the idea of the deal, but aren't keen on the phone, then there's a good chance that if this does well, more handsets will become available with similar offers, potentially from other operators. If and when that happens, we'll bring you the announcement.

The Mythic offers a 3.3-inch full touchscreen and features Samsung's TouchWiz user interface. Boasting one-touch access to the likes of AT&T Mobile TV and social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, the Mythic is angled as a "portable entertainment powerhouse". ?

Available in red and silver, the Flight is described as a next generation messaging device and boasts a vertical sliding form factor that opens to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard underneath with a touchscreen on top.

The Samsung Mythic goes on sale for $199.99 after a mail-in rebate while the Samsung Flight is available for $99.99 after mail-in rebate.

We've been doing a little bit of digging to find out who, in the UK, will be offering Motorola's forthcoming Droid handset. The Android 2.0-sporting QWERTY slider scored a whopping 9/10 in its Pocket-lint review, but given that it's supposed to be due on Friday in the States, we're not seeing any sign of the handset in Britain.

We gave all the UK operators a call to find out exactly whether any of them were planning on stocking the device. O2 told us that it wasn't going to be selling the handset, despite its German wing selling it as the "Milestone". 3 said the same thing - there are no current plans to offer the handset at this time.

T3 spoke to Nicola Shenton, head of handset and device marketing at T-Mobile UK, who told the magazine that the company had tested the phone, but passed it up. We also talked to Orange and Vodafone. Orange told us that it had nothing to announce other than the fact it's selling the Motorola DEXT, and Vodafone promised to call us back and haven't.

From that, we can rule out three of the major five operators. Orange is looking likely, especially given the non-denial when other networks were happy to confirm "no". ?We'll update you as and when we hear more from Orange or Vodafone.

You're sitting at work, chatting to a colleague when your phone rings. After a quick glance at the screen, you decide now isn't the time to talk to your mother, so flip the HD2 face down to reject the call. It has a great sense of finality. We love it. Our mothers don't.

3. Close proximity

The HD2 comes rocking with a proximity sensor so it knows when it is next to your face. This does a couple of things. Firstly, it shuts off the screen whilst you are talking, saving battery. Secondly, when you pull the phone away from your face you are presented with in-call options – engage speaker phone, popup the keypad for those pesky automated services and so on.

4. Poke to focus

Touch focusing on the camera is all well and good, but usually results in one of two things. Firstly it often means you take a shot of something you didn't mean to through a quick press and secondly, it means you get camera shake because you move that focus to press the shutter button. Not so on the HD2. Touch to select the focal point and keep your finger in place to take the shot. It's a deliberate action, rather than a fleeting press.

5. Cover art made easy

Windows Mobile is only really for boring business types right? Well it isn't when you add a dash of HTC Sense sauce. Enter HTC's media player in Sense and you'll find an icon in the top left that will find and fill in your missing album art. iTunes eat your heart out.

6. More keyboards than you can shake a finger at

The HD2 has a massive screen, so the chances are that you'll never have to use anything other than the full QWERTY keyboard in either landscape or portrait modes. But if you do want something else, a long press next to keyboard icon at the bottom will spring up the options for compact QWERTY or a 12-key keypad.

7. Kill them!

From Sense you can swipe all the way to the right to access the settings, or simply swipe to the left from the front page. Here in settings under Other, you'll find the Task Manager. Multi-tasking is great, but it's so easy to leave all those applications running that you don't need. Here you can quickly and easily kill them.

8. Expand your horizons

With a 5-megapixel camera on the back, the HD2 gives you the option to snap a panoramic picture. It does this in three stages and all you have to do is take your first picture and a neat overlay helps you align the next picture and then the third. Ta da! An ultra-wide photo of your office.?

Casio has gone tough in the US with Verizon, launching a new Push to Talk ?(PTT) handset geared towards those who like to beat their handset while they work.

Coming with "Military standard" ruggedness - a real term - the handset made by Casio will be called the Casio G'zOne Brigade and offer users a flip out QWERTY keyboard in a clamshell design, a 3.2-megapixel cameras and 3G connectivity.

That military standard (MIL-STD-810F) means you get water, shock, dust, vibration, humidity, salt fog, altitude, high temperature, low temperature and solar radiation resistance.

More appealing to small businesses will be Verizon's contacts feature that allows you to manage contacts on up to 50 handsets at the touch of the button, meaning your army of workers never have the excuse of not having the right number.

Keeping on the business front you will also be able to view Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint presentations as well as PDFs

Yet to be priced the handset is expected out in the US shortly.

Verizon also launched the Samsung Convoy, a more traditional clamshell?rugged Push to Talk (PTT) device with military specifications. The Convoy will be available on 15 November.

LG announced a new "Chocolate" handset on Thursday on the Verizon network in the US forgetting its stylish heritage for a brief moment.

The rather gaudy looking handset will be offered for $79.99 and slip into the mid-tier range of handsets for those looking for a phone without a $30 data plan.

Tech specs include a touchscreen, random buttons, 1GB of internal memory, microSD card and 3.2-megapixel camera.

While Verizon has moved away from cluttering its handsets with software and applications, the Chocolate Touch doesn't benefit with the operator going for a more "traditional" approach.

That means V Cast Music and the company's navigator software as standard.

Of course, aimed at "the kids" means it's social network savvy with interchangeable backs. Luckily, we've been told, you can switch out that purple backplate.

A new Sony Ericsson mobile phone has been revealed in rumoured online news and leaked photographs.

Said to be called the Kurara, the device is reported to be Symbian S60 5th generation smartphone.

Specs are unkown, aside from a 3.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen and an 8.1-megapixel camera.

It's thought the Kurara could sit in Sony Ericsson's range alongside the Satio, that mixes the Walkman and Cyber-shot brands together.

A February launch at the Mobile World Congress event is rumoured, but no doubt there will be more leaks between now and then, so we'll keep you posted.

HTC?and?Verizon?have confirmed the rumours that the second "Droid" handset alongside the?Motorola Droid will be called the Droid Eris and be created by HTC.?

The new handset will offer a virtually identical feature set to the?Sprint HTC Hero?and feature a 3.2-inch multi-touch touchscreen display, 512MB ROM, 288MB RAM and a Qualcomm MSM 7600, 528MHz chip.?

Running Android 1.5 rather than the newly announced 2.0 OS, users will get the Sense UI to guide them through the phones features.?

Differences to the HTC Hero on Sprint will be a smaller battery (1300mAh over 1500mAh) a slightly more rounded design and a matte black rather than silver finish. It will also come with a proximity sensor which turns the touchscreen off when next to your head - something the European and Sprint version doesn't have.?It's also thinner (only just).

In the hand it was quick to respond to our requests, and the multi-touch certainly helps it win out over the Droid by Motorola's 2.0 OS, however it's worth mentioning that with no GSM support this will only work in America.

Priced at $99 (the same as the iPhone) Verizon is being very aggressive on this one it seems. The new handset will be available from 6 November in the US.

Verizon and HTC just dropped a bombshell on Sprint and its HTC Hero offering, marketing a virtually identical handset for $80 cheaper in the US, in what is sure to create a price war in the run up to the holidays.

The new handset, The Droid Eris?by HTC, has been announced as part of the new DROID range on Verizon and will cost just $99 compared to Sprint's $179 HTC Hero.

The new model will come with the same 3.2-inch multi-touch touchscreen display, the same Qualcomm MSM 7600, 528MHz chipset and same ROM and RAM specifications (512MB and 288MB respectively), however, a proximity sensor has been added to turn the touchscreen off when next to your head. It will sport a slightly smaller battery (1300mAh vs 1500mAh) though.

Aiming to the be entry level handset to Verizon's new Droid range and taking on the Apple iPhone 3G, the HTC Droid Eris, as it will be known, will come with Android 1.5 OS rather than the newer 2.0 offering from Google and feature HTC's Sense UI as found on the HTC Hero.

In keeping with the Droid by Motorola handset launch, Verizon has left the handset operating system untouched only adding in its Visual Voicemail service.

The handset will be in stores from 6 November.

Vodafone has an offer on a range of PAYG mobiles offering ?100 worth of calls or texts with the purchase of selected phones. As well as the Genio Touch in pink and white, the offer also extends to the LG Viewty Lite, the Samsung Tocco Lite and the Vodafone 541.

Basic specs for the Genio include 2-megapixel camera, FM radio and MP3 player along with that touchscreen. You also get access to social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo and the ability to swap the back of the phone in order to indulge any desire you might have for different colours.

The Tocco Lite has slightly improved specs with a 3.2-megapixel camera, whilst the LG Viewty gets 5-megapixels and HSDPA connectivity. To take advantage of the offer orders need to be in by 22 December, with further details of the deal as well as full specs of the phones on the Vodafone website.

Prices are ?80 each for the Genios, ?100 for the Viewty, ?90 for the Tocco and just ?40 for Voda's own touchscreen 541.

The furore over the Orange terms and conditions for the iPhone may be dying down now that the mobile operator has said it'll happily turn a blind eye to customers using streaming services like Spotify and YouTube, but there still remains the issue over this 750MB per month data limit. This is what Orange has described as "unlimited" mobile internet access and we've got no particular issue with the company stretching the definitions of the word, any more than we have with all the others that do it. The real question is though, just what will 750MB get you?

Fortunately, Orange has a mobile broadband data calculator on its own site, so we had a play to find out how far our notional budget will stretch. As it turns out, not very far.

Of course, if you really want to, you can save all your credits and ditch streaming and downloads altogether which is essentially what the original terms and conditions might have you do, and for good reason it seems. Suddenly, you get up to an hour's IM and browsing per day with as many emails and attachments as you can shake a stick at. Now that is what you might call unlimited.

So, there's a few fairly obvious conclusions we can take from this:

1) 750MB per month doesn't really get you that far
2) Video streaming will get you into trouble on this package
3) Although O2 simply presents users with the company's rather nebulous fair usage policy, it could well work out at more. Fortunately, both operators apply a warning system if you go over the limits rather than charging you the excess but it's probably not worth being a persistent offender.

T-Mobile has announced it will be offering the BlackBerry Bold 9700 online and via telesales from 6 November and in T-Mobile stores across the UK from 10 November.

The Bold follow-up is a slimline QWERTY handset with HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, BlackBerry's push email service, a 3.2-megapixel camera, on-board GPS, media player, 3.5mm headset jack, plus 32GB of memory storage via an interchangeable microSD card.

T-Mobile is offering the BlackBerry Bold 9700 from free on ?35 per month contracts with BlackBerry email charged at an extra ?5 and unlimited internet yet another ?5 per month, bringing the total to ?45.

Vodafone is also offering the new Bold 9700, from free on ?35 per month 2-year contracts or for ?40 a month on 18-month contracts.

LG's newest touchscreen handset, the LG GD510 Pop, announced back in September, is now available at the Carphone Warehouse for ?99.95 on pay as you go basis.

Said to be easy to use, the Pop offers a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen with a thin bezel of brushed aluminium casing.

Described as the smallest full 3-inch touchscreen phone yet, it features a 3-megapixel camera, a web browser and multimedia player. Boasting 8GB of external memory the Pop measures in at 97.8 x 49.5 x 11.2mm.

The LG Pop is also available for free on ?15 per month 24-month contracts, or ?20 per month 18-monthers.

Twitterpeek, the dedicated Twitter device announced earlier in the week?in the US could be making its way to the UK in the early part of next year according to the company behind it.

"Someday TwitterPeek will cross the pond to the UK. someday could be early next year I would guess", said Amol Sarva, the founder and CEO of Peek on Twitter.?

The TwitterPeek as it is called, has a dedicated colour screen, and is a QWERTY keyboard sporting device that allows users to dump their smartphones, email and phone calls and just check their Twitter stream regardless of what they are doing.

The new device, available at Amazon.com, will cost $99 and include unlimited nationwide service for the first 6 months, which jumps to $7.95 per month for service thereafter.

The company is also offering a $199 package, which includes unlimited Twitter service for the lifetime of device without the need for a contract.?

The HTC Droid Eris has been steadily leaked over recent times, but just-revealed unboxing shots from US blog Boy Genius Report propel this effort from the realm of rumours into the big time.

We know Verizon is planning an entire family of Droid-branded Android phones, and it seems hot on the heels of the high-end Droid by Motorola, we can expect an announcement about this more mid-range effort soon.

What looks to be a variant of the Hero, the Droid is rumoured to launch at the $99 price point in the States - we will keep you posted.

EMI has launched a subsidiary called Abbey Road Live to offer gig-goers the chance to walk out of the venue with a recording of the concert they just attended on their mobile phones. The service has been available previously at gigs, but only on CD-R.

The company will offer fans a choice of formats, including CD, DVD, digital devices, or even a secure digital delivery to your mobile or waiting for you when you get back home. The service will be initially launching in Europe and North America, but progressively rolling out across the rest of the world.

Artists working with the service include Blur, Depeche Mode, Franz Ferdinand, Nick Cave, the Pixies, Goldfrapp, Moby, Status Quo and the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. All have sold recordings of gigs through Live Here Now, which was established in 2004 by Mute Records and was a precursor to Abbey Road Live.

But could this breed a new generation of offensive gig goers ruining people's recordings by shouting "Hello mum!" during quiet moments in the set? Only time will tell, let's hope not.

HTC has announced the HD2, its new high-end Windows Mobile 6.5 handset, is now shipping in Europe and Taiwan.

In addition, HTC has confirmed the HD2 will be available in the United States with "a major US carrier" in early 2010.

Here in the UK we're still waiting for exact launch info. It seems T-Mobile may be offering the device - it was named on the operator's coming soon section - although there's no official comment yet as to when, how or why.

The HD2 offers the speedy Snapdragon processor, a 4.3-inch display, a 5-megapixel camera, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, and HTC's Sense UI interface on top of Windows Mobile 6.5.

We will keep you posted on its UK debut.

Since we brought you news of the new Nokia Illuvial range it's been announced that Pixie Lott will be "the face" for the new series.

A Carphone Warehouse exclusive, the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Illuvial, Nokia 6700 Illuvial and the Nokia 6303 Illuvial are being flung into the Christmas market.

Pixie Lott is quoted as saying: "I spend loads of time on my mobile, so it's important to me that it looks good. The phones in the range all look fab – they're stylish and yet still girlie".

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Illuvial is due to be available on a PAYG basis from ?99.95, pay monthly from ?15 a month.

The N900 isn't far away now - it's due on 16 November. As a result, we're due some pricing information and, lo and behold, here it is courtesy of mobile comparison site Omio.

It's possible to get the handset on a 24-month contract for as little as ?20 per month from Orange, though that'll only give you 200 minutes and you'll have to shell out ?170 for the handset. A similar 24-month deal from O2 for ?30 per month will net you 600 minutes, and the phone itself will only cost ?10.

If you're determined to get the handset free, then a 24-month deal from Orange will set you back ?35 per month with 900 minutes. The cheapest 18-month contact is ?25 per month, again from Orange, with 600 minutes and ?220 upfront phone cost.

The Nokia 1280, Nokia 1616, Nokia 1800, Nokia 2220 slide and Nokia 2690 - support Nokia Life Tools and boast ease of use and affordability.

Priced at 20, 24 and 26 euros the Nokia 1280, Nokia 1616 and Nokia 1800 offer an FM radio, a torch, an anti-scratch cover and a dust-resistant keymat.

The long battery life, with up to 22 days of standby time, is described as "vital" for people in areas where access to electricity is limited.

The Nokia 2220 slide and the Nokia 2690, at 45 and 54 euros, also support Ovi Mail with accounts that be can be created on the device for PC-free emailing.

Other device features include FM radio, VGA camera, GPRS and MMS support, phone books for up to 1000 contacts, and Bluetooth.

The new phones are due to be available in Indonesia this year and next, along with Nokia's Life Tools service, providing agricultural, educational and entertainment info and services.

2009 has seen the digital camera arms race continue at an ever increasing speed. With Canon announcing that its profits were down over 80% in the fourth quarter of last year and the rise of the cameraphone, one might have thought it was going to be a tricky time for the imaging industry. Think again.

Just a glance at our cameras category on Pocket-lint will give you some idea of what a hotly contested gong the Pocket-lint Best Digital Camera Award 2009 is going to be. So long as it takes a snap, then it counts.

DSLRs

Starting with the biggest, and mercifully fewest, to contend with, it's been an important time for the top end of the camera world. One of the main focuses has been to attract the growing snap happy, photo uploading market of users to the more professional equipment. One way to do this has been in the interfaces of the devices themselves with Pentax, Olympus and Nikon offering camera usability, simplicity and even advice in their models such as the Pentax K-x, the Olympus E600 and the Nikon D3000.

The second most major way to add value to their products has been to bring in HD video as well, seen in cameras such as the Nikon D5000, the Canon 500D and the Pentax K7 all the way up into prosumer and professional products in the very desirable and very expensive shapes of the Nikon D300s, D3s, the Canon 7D and the 1D Mark IV - although it is unlikely that the last of these will make it out in time to qualify for the award. What's more these bigger boys have continued to raise the bar in speed, focus and light sensitivity with up to 9fps shooting, 51-point AF and near pitch black recording ISOs of 102,400.

A special mention should also be made to two other DSLR manufacturers for two very different reasons - Leica, for making our eyes cry tears of blood at the ?16,000 Leica S2 DSLR with a photo format of its very own, and Sony for the leaps and bounds made with the company's Alpha range of DSLRs that have finally made it a brand to take very seriously in this field.

Compacts

Never before has there been such an enormous and specialised range of snappers in the compact department. Gone are the days of the straight forward point and press. Even phones have got smile, beauty and blink modes as well as a thousand and one scene set ups too. The manufacturers have had to think more niche and by jove have they been creative this year. Among the hundreds of new models that seem to have come in two major deluges at the beginning of the year and just in time for Christmas, are those for style or affordability such as the L-series from Nikon, the CyberShots (including Party Dock) from Sony, the Z35 Finepix from FujiFilm and the all touch Canon IXUS 200 IS, there seem to so many to remember that it just makes your brain hurt.

One of the really big categories this year has been the super-zooms. As the technology has advanced they've managed to stuff more and more into those tiny chassis with over 20x magnification and full DSLR processors inside almost as standard, plus the inevitable HD video shooting too. See Samsung's WB5000, the Panasonic FZ35 & 38, the Powershot SX20 & S90 and the Nikon P90 for some excellent examples. Take it one stage further and you meet the compact cameras that cost more than the low end big versions. Designed as walkabout cameras for professionals, where perhaps a DSLR might get in the way, you'll find the Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR and the upgrade of the hugely successful G10, the Canon G11.

It's now even possible to mistake the level of sophistication that lies within these super gadgets with a trend towards old school looks burning a strong line this year, particularly with the rise of the micro four thirds system most famously in the Olympus EP-1 but also with great grace in the Panasonic GF1, the cooler cousin to the high spec of the Lumix GH1 with its HD video improvement on last year's model. At the same time there have been equal levels of excitement over the return of the Rangefinder in digital form although few will ever use it with it coming at Leica prices.

Finally the sub-category has produced machines that'll simply record anywhere with rugged and waterproof models from Olympus, Canon and GE and, best of all, there's been the down right bizarre with the dual screen Samsung ST550 & ST500, the dual lensed 3D-shooting FujiFilm W13D and the dual functioned retake on the insta-matic with the POGO camera from Polaroid as well as the return of the original itself.

If that lot wasn't enough, just about every device has become better connected, as is our want, as the power of the interweb grows, and it's regular business to see cameras with GPS, Wi-Fi and all sorts of native support for Flickr, Facebook and YouTube uploads. What on Earth will they think of next?

Camcorders

If you need us to point out the most obvious trend in the camcorder department, then you've been on another planet for the last 12 months. No, we're not talking about HD but pocket-sized recorders - which as it goes, are pretty much all HD now anyway with only a small clutch not quite as Full as the others. The huge success of the of the Flip Mino spawned not only the 720p Flip Mino HD but also latterly the premium Flip Ultra range with more memory and resolution than ever before.

Creative has followed suit with the Vado HD and Kodak has continued to show us there is life after film with the impressive Zi8. Naturally, Samsung has spotted the same gold rush and come up with something special all of their own with the HMX-U10, while Toshiba has decided to do it their own way, for better or for worse, with the Camileo S10 at the beginning of the year and more recently the upgraded S20 and higher spec, larger form friends at IFA 2009. Even Medion, who seems to be popping up in all sorts of unexpected award categories, has pitched in with some style and purpose, as well as the usual value, focusing on rugged utility with the Life S47000.

With high resolutions and impressive frame rates already well established in more serious camcorders, this year provided an opportunity for the industry to do something that technology does when it has nothing better to do - make everything the same but smaller. However, what was recognised was that with greater power comes a greater responsibility and both battery life and stability have been well looked after, while developing their two greatest enemies - memory space and zoom. The choice for the former seems to have been to stay away from inefficient, energy consuming HDDs and either go with SSD or memory card solutions from the Canon LEGRIA series to the superb selection of Sanyo Xacti Dual camcorders all the way back in Q1. Perhaps the most interesting technology here though has come from Sony in the CX505VE Handycam, still positioned as the only camera at this level to feature 3-dimensional stability control - pitch, roll and turn all cancelled out.

Mobile Phones

Resolution has been on the rise for quite some time now in mobile phones but when the compact business decided that HD recording was the new megapixels, someone forgot to tell the handset manufacturers. The Samsung Pixon12 was the first to catch up with the dedicated gadgets but there have been plenty of others with the same functions, features and nigh on glassware as the compact cameras - if with slightly lower megapixel counts. Take your pick from the LG Viewty Smart, the Sony Ericsson W995, the Nokias N86 and N97 and even the HD video shooting of the Samsung i8910. While no one would suggest that these phones offer as much as the dedicated cameras, it's hard to argue that the shots you can get out of them are certainly good enough. The next assault will be to get optical zoom sorted.

The Rest

Beyond the quality snappers, there's a whole world of digital imaging out there that doesn't need that same level of finesse but are excellent gadgets noe the less. Webcams managed to go HD this year with the Microsoft Lifecam and even take on a new form with IP cameras, essentially for surveillance of one kind or another that you can network and view from anywhere on line. The Y-cam and Compro IP50 are good examples as any.

Finally, there's the pseudo-novelty angle with keychain spycams, dangerously probe-like USB snakecams and even something to see a day in the life of your pet too. Oh yes, and Apple added a video camera to the nano. Enough to consider? Now, go choose.

The constant battle between Apple and those that want to open up the iPhone operating system took another step forward today, this time in favour of the coders.

George Hotz, a developer, has managed to circumnavigate Apple's coding to allow users to unlock the latest 3.1.2 iPhone update and allow users to install non approved applications as well as allow them to use the iPhone on other mobile networks like T-Mobile in the UK and US.

The software, which is available for both Mac and Windows users, requires very little knowledge of how these things work and will no doubt force Apple to release a new update to shut the loop hole.?For those who used the?DevTeam’s PwnageTool?to jailbreak, Hotz says the blacksn0w app will soon be available on Cydia, the unofficial app store.

Earlier on Tuesday a warning was issued that iPhone users who "jailbreak" their phones could be under threat by hackers?looking to steal personal information due to a security setting that is left open after a user unlocks their handset.

It is also worth mentioning that unlocking your handset voids the warranty.?

Sony Ericsson's newest handset - the Xperia X10 - isn't due until February next year, but it's already up for pre-order from Clove Technology. The handset formerly known as Rachael can be yours for ?460, including VAT.

As previously reported, the X10 has a heavily modded Android 1.6 OS, 4-inch capacitive TFT touchscreen, and 8.1-megapixel camera and a speedy 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It has Wi-Fi, HSUPA and Bluetooth, and comes with an 8GB microSD card.

It's packed with a range of apps, too. Mediascape lets you browse through local and online photo, video and audio content, and Timescape lets you organise and interact with your contacts across a wide range of messaging platforms. Both of which are part of the UX platform that will be arriving on several handsets from Sony Ericsson next year.

Orange's terms and conditions for its mobile internet ban applications like Spotify, AudioBoo, Ustream, Facebook and YouTube, something which could be of concern to those considering buying an iPhone with the mobile network.

In the company's T&Cs, it says:?"Not to be used for other activities (eg using your handset as a modem, non-Orange internet based streaming services, voice or video over the internet, instant messaging, peer to peer file sharing, non-Orange internet based video). Should such use be detected notice may be given and Network protection controls applied to all services which Orange does not believe constitutes mobile browsing".

That covers a whole host of different applications that are wildly popular on Apple's handheld computing platform. The company also limits its "Unlimited" plan to just 750MB per month, as Dan pointed out in his comparison feature the other day, which might be worth considering if you're planning to use these apps heavily.

The issue was spotted and pointed out to the BBC's Rory Cellan-Jones, who says: "if too many power users start streaming TV and playing online games on their phones, the Orange network may buckle under the strain".

Orange has, however, commented to the BBC - saying: "We do recognise that iPhone customers will use popular streaming services such as YouTube, Spotify etc. As a result we do not intend to apply network protection controls to anyone, as long as they are within their usage allowance. The T&Cs are in place to reserve the right to restrict access should they continue to exceed our Fair Usage policy, and our other Mobile data users suffer a reduced data experience as a result".

If you don't mean it, Orange, why put it in your T&Cs?

Sony Ericsson has released a detailed video of its new Xperia X10 mobile phone.

As well as offering hands-on footage of the new handset and its interface, the official vid goes into great detail about the new Timescape and Mediascape functionality.

As some of you might know, Timescape is a communications app, which aggregates email, Facebook, Twitter, IM, and SMS into one big "lifestream", while Mediascape is built around music, video and images and organises all three on your device.

BT has finally begun to make something of its acquisition of Ribbit in 2008. The phone company is taking names for a beta trial of a cloud phone service, which will allow any mobile users (not just BT customers) to get online access to their calls, messages and phones.

BT Business got a Ribbit for Salesforce app back in April, but this is the first time consumers have had access to the technology being offered by the cloud computing startup. It'll enable users to get a virtual, online, version of their phone to reply to emails and texts, read voicemail messages and make and receive calls from.

Ted Griggs, founder of Ribbit, said: "There are more than 60 million mobile phones in the UK today, and the Ribbit Mobile service works with most of them. You don’t need a new number or a new device, and you don’t have to download software or sign a contract. You simply activate Ribbit on your phone and go".

Interested mobile users should head over to the Ribbit Mobile site and fill in their details, though don't expect to be allocated an account until early 2010. That's when the beta test is due to start.

Peek, the company that offers a dedicated handheld email device, has today announced a new device just for twitterholics.

The TwitterPeek as it is called, is a dedicated colour screen, QWERTY keyboard sporting device that allows users to dump their smartphones, email and phone calls and just check their twitter stream regardless of what they are doing instead.

"Twitter has become a worldwide phenomenon, but – until now – the millions of Twitter users without a smartphone haven’t been able to fully experience the fun of Twitter on-the-go. TwitterPeek will make it easy and affordable for everyone who doesn’t have a smartphone to really enjoy Twitter on–the-go", said Peekster-in-Chief Amol Sarva hoping Twitter fans won't just opt for a free app instead.

The new device, available at Amazon.com will cost $99 and include unlimited nationwide service for the first 6 months, which jumps to $7.95 per month for service thereafter.

A number of Dutch iPhone users who had jailbroken their handsets came in for a shock recently, after a hacker was able to target them and attempt to extort 5 euros for instructions on how to "secure" the phone.

The hacker used port scanning to identify phones running on the T-Mobile network in the Netherlands that had SSH running. Most jailbroken handsets enable SSH so that a user can login and run terminal commands, but many people don't bother to change the default root password, leaving their phones vulnerable to attack.

The hacker posted a message on the handset, reading: "Important Warning: You iPhone's been hacked because it's really insecure! Please visit doiop.com/iHacked and secure your iPhone right now! Right now, I can access all your files. This message won't disappear until your iPhone's secure".

Visiting that site asks the user to send 5 euros to a PayPal account. Upon receipt, the hacker then promises to send out instructions on how to remove the hack, which Ars Technica reckons would most likely just be a factory reset of the phone.

So if you have a jailbroken iPhone, make sure you secure it by changing the default root password. If you're not sure how to do that, then a quick Google should sort you out. You can also deactivate SSH when you're not using it. The lesson, though, is to not trust sensitive information to a device that's running code you don't 100% trust.

Only 1963 handsets will be sold, in tribute to the year that Automobili Lamborghini was founded. The phone is housed in black titanium carbide coated 316L stainless steel, and the battery cover plays host to the same signature that's on the?Lamborghini Murcielago LP 640's V12 engine block.

The display is 60.5 carat sapphire crystal, and the handset offers 7 hours of talk time or 28 days of standby battery life, which makes it "unrivalled", if you believe the slightly hyperbolic press release from the company.

Want a quote? Sure you do. "The MERIDIIST Automobili Lamborghini phone epitomizes TAG Heuer consistency in inspiring and framing its diversification, combining technology and design, and partnering with the best sports car brands. Sony Ericsson is about to launch its latest smartphone, the Xperia X10. Pocket-lint managed to get a sneak preview of the handset, formerly known as Rachael, so we grabbed some photos.

The first thing you'll notice is that this is an Android 1.6 handset with a considerable UI overhaul. SE has turned the whole thing blue and modded the default interface considerably. Everything from the dialler to the homescreens to the contacts and messaging apps have been re-skinned.

There's also a couple of custom applications - Timescape and Mediascape - which allow you to sift through your contacts and messages, and your pictures, music and video, respectively. The apps and UI will be rolling out across several handsets in the first half of 2010.

The Xperia X10 has a 4-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 8-megapixel camera with flash, and all the connectivity options you'd expect, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HSUPA, and GPS. It ships with an 8GB microSD card, and there'll be up to 1GB of on-board memory, too.

It will be showing up in Q1 of next year, around the middle of the quarter. "It won't be 31 March", said Steve Walker, Head of Portfolio Planning at Sony Ericsson. It'll come in either Sensuous Black or Lustrous White.

Sony Ericsson, following considerable teasing, has finally unveiled its flagship handset for 2010 - the Xperia X10. It's an Android 1.6 device, complete with 4-inch capacitive touchscreen and a whole host of interface modifications that Sony Ericsson has created for the phone, and for a range of other handsets that'll be launched in 2010.

We got up close and personal with the handset, and spoke to Steve Walker, Sony Ericsson's head of portfolio planning, about how the release represents the company altering the way it does business. He told us that the company is now focusing on providing camera and multimedia functionality in the same phone - rather than splitting the product range.

The X10 represents that move, including both an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash and a 3.5mm headphone jack (very welcome on a Sony Ericsson handset) with a tonne of multimedia software - something that is a weakness of the default Android build.

The Android build has been heavily modified for the X10, but it's just the start of a whole range of both Android and Symbian handsets that'll be appearing from the company in the first half of 2010. Each will share a common interface design and set of applications and functionalities, starting with Timescape and Mediascape on the X10.

Timescape is a communications app, which aggregates email, ?Facebook, Twitter, IM, and SMS into one big lifestream that you can navigate through. Each "event" is represented by a tile, which you can tap to view in more detail, or long-press to get a preview of.

That tile has a button marked with an "oo" infinity symbol. Hitting that will take you to related content - which could be content from the person in question, or it could be web content related to whatever is on the tile. The list can be filtered by medium, and you can reply to individual messages within the application.

Mediascape is the other "signature" application. It's built around music, video and images and organises all three on your device. It incorporates players for all three, too, and can hook into various bits of online content. YouTube was named explicitly, but we'd expect Last.fm and perhaps Flickr to show up here too.

Items in Mediascape also have an infinity button and pressing this will again summon related content. For a band, that could be songs on your device, YouTube videos, or even other artists that are similar to whatever you're listening to. The overlaid controls of this section looked quite similar to the Zune's UI, though that's only a good thing.

Lastly, the image viewer in Mediascape supports facial recognition, meaning that you can tag up to five people in a photo and then the handset will attempt to identify those people in other images too - the more you tag, the more accurate it is. The feature can also hook in with your contacts list - you can tap a person in a photo to call them, for instance.

Although Sony Ericsson has deeply modded the UI, it's still Android at its heart. Any regular Android app can be installed and will look normal, and no sections of the default interface have been locked off and made inaccessible. Mostly they've just been re-skinned.

The handset packs a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and has a big 4-inch capacitive FWVGA TFT touchscreen. It has an 8-megapixel camera, with LED flash, and comes with an 8GB microSD card in the box. It has HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth, and connects to computer via micro- (not mini-) USB on the top.

It'll initially be launched in Q1 in "some markets", rolling out across the rest of the world (including Japan) over the first half of the year. It's not clear exactly which markets, but Walker hinted that Europe could be high on the list, discussing its "more flexible carriers" compared to the United States.

As for when in Q1, Walker said "it's not going to be two months, and it's not going to be five. You won't be seeing this on 31 March". Perhaps late February is a good estimate then, though handsets are often prone to delays. Although it ships with Android 1.6, Walker confirmed that Android 2.0 would be rolled out as soon as possible.

However, as this is only the first in a range of Android and Symbian handsets from Sony Ericsson that'll be packing similar user experiences, we wouldn't imagine that the company would be hanging around in launching this product. When we hear anything concrete about launch dates, or pricing and networks, we'll make sure that you know.

If you're expecting to see a major difference in the cost of an iPhone between these two UK networks, then think again. It's not an accident that the price is similar. When it boils down to it, it seems likely that both companies buy the handsets with the same overheads and naturally that's going to be passed on to the customer. It may be a different story by the time Vodafone comes along but for now, that's the way it is.

That said, there are differences in the price plans, if not the overall cost of each package. Combine that with an alternative way of looking at each deal and you start to get a better picture of where the real value lies. Take a look. The O2 packages are in blue and the ones from Orange in, er, orange.

What strikes you first if you glance over to the far right column is that, generally speaking, those 24 month contracts seem to cost a lot more in the long run. In fact, if you look at the differences in similar deals over the two time periods, it's quite astonishing. So, it appears that extending the term to alleviate the initial outlay might not be such a good idea. Together with the fact that your phone is more likely to be out-dated in the course of 2 years and it looks very bad indeed.

Beyond that, it's quite impressive how well these tariffs have been set out within each provider as well. The jump up from handset to handset within each tariff is regular according to the time frame of pay back. The bottom line is that you're not going to find one deal that significantly better value than another. On the other hand, it does give you a better idea of which one might best suit your needs.

Other Choices

Other important considerations beyond the plan are going to be over which network is going to suit you. Both providers offer "unlimited" Wi-Fi hotspot access with their partners as well as making you pay additionally for internet tethering as well.

Both also provide what they call unlimited data packages too. Orange puts a real figure to it of 750MB, whereas O2 only refers to a fair usage policy which is designed to reflect proper usage as well as the user's drain on the rest of the network. In practice, it's designed to make sure people are just using their allowances for mobile browsing, but at the same time it does give the company a license to set the bar wherever it pleases. Which proves to be more in practice is anyone's guess.

Much has been suggested about O2's quality of network as well, but its people have also looked to the handset's short-comings to explain a perceived poor reception. It's unlikely there'll be a huge difference with Orange, so at the end of the day, you'll do best to stick with the provider that works best in your area.

Last of all, it's worth considering the added benefits. One reason for not talking about the PAYG plans is that Orange is applying its animal tariffs to them where you can receive free weekend and evening calls or unlimited texts or free music. At the same time, O2 has top-up bonuses to consider as well.

So, until Vodafone arrives onto the scene, what it might all come down to is Orange Wednesdays and a bit of personal choice. Of course, by that time there'll be a new iPhone to consider - in leaks if not in reality. Decisions, decisions. Ever thought about Android?

It appears the HTC HD2 has found a home with a UK operator as T-Mobile has revealed via its website it is to offer the new device.

The new Windows Mobile 6.5 handset offers a 4.3-inch multi-touch display, speedy Snapdragon processor, 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS and HSDPA.

The "HTC Touch HD2" has now appeared on T-Mobile's coming soon section of its online shop with a due date of November.

However, it's accompanied by the wrong image and is said to boast a 3.8-inch screen and Android Market, so we're certainly not holding our breath on this one. ?

UPDATE: T-Mobile says it has no comment.

INQ's not-long-released Mini 3G handset has just received a price reduction to ?49.99, down from ?59.99.

The handset has Facebook, IM, Skype and Twitter functionality along with a 2.2-inch display and 2-megapixel camera.

There have also been changes to the pricing of the wireless modem that enables Mi-Fi on the 3 network, which now costs ?49.99 upfront on the "Broadband 5GB 1 Month deal", down from ?69.99. The package includes 5GB of data for ?15 a month.

Previously only available on a monthly contract, Mi-Fi is now available on PAYG, so you can shell out the initial ?49.99 and top-up as and when you need it.

Gosh, Sony Ericsson has done quite a job on the interface for its forthcoming "Rachael" Android handset. The bulk of the additions seem to be targeted at the multimedia end of the operating system, which, as Engadget points out, has always been a little on the meagre side.

There's a tinge of blue about everything, and some very Zune-influenced menus and interface choices. Lots of big pictures of artists too, which we hope are sourced from the Web, otherwise our patchy ID3 tags will be exposed. The title of the video also betrays the screen resolution that the device is getting - a roomy 480 x 854.

So we've got a good look at the interface, and a good look at the outside of the device, all that's left is a full reveal of the handset - something that we should be getting imminently. We'll keep you posted.

Suggesting a UK annoucement might not be too far off, it's been revealed the Droid by Motorola, recently jointly announced with Verizon in the US, is to launch in another country soon.

O2 Germany is to offer the new Android handset, but under a different name - Droid being what Verizon has dubbed its forthcoming family of Android-based phones.

In Germany the Droid will launch as the GSM "Milestone" sometime in November although details for consumers are yet to be confirmed.

Whether this suggests the phone may be an O2 offering in the UK - the operator already boasts the iPhone and the Palm Pre in its device portfolio - is anyone's guess.

Pocket-lint got in touch with Motorola in the UK as the Droid was announced to see when it might be touching down in the UK. At the time a Motorola spokesperson said:

"We've not yet announced availability of this device in other markets, but look forward to continuing to expand our Android-based portfolio around the world".

Orange has now officially confirmed what we've previously reported - it will offer the iPhone in the UK from 10 November.

The iPhone 3G and 3GS will be available in Orange stores on Tuesday 10 November from 7am in certain stores with some shops staying open late.

The iPhone will be available on Orange in all Orange stores, online, at Orange HMV concessions, as well as through Apple Retail Stores, Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U.

Revealing that a quarter of a million have pre-registered interest for the Apple phone, Orange says it will offer the iPhone on a pay as you go basis, to pay-monthly customers and to business customers too.

As far as pay as you go goes, customers who top-up ?50 at purchase will get an iPhone 3G for ?333 while the iPhone 3GS 32GB will be ?539. This compare's to O2's pricing of ?538.30.

The pay as you go deals offer just 250MB of data each month, plus a year's BT Openzone access.

On a pay monthly basis the iPhone 8GB, 16GB and 32GB models will be available on various monthly plans, with the 3GS 16GB free on all ?45 plans and the 3G model free from ?30 plans - both with a 24-month contract.

The cheapest monthly contract, a ?29.36 per month, 2-year contract will see the iPhone 3GS 32GB charged at ?225 with the handset only available free for those paying out for a ?73.40 a month contract. In terms of data, Orange has a "fair usage" allowance of 750MB per month.

O2's free handset structure for the 3GS 32GB is similar, although it charges ?274.23 for the phone on lower-cost 18-month tariffs and ?175.19 for the device on its 24-month ?34.26 plan.

iPhone owners who want to use their iPhone to get mobile broadband on their laptop can take out additional tethering bundles starting at ?5 per month.

With the message "We're looking forward to November 3rd. We think you should be too", Sony Ericsson has stepped up its teaser campaign for its next handset launch with a new video.

Briefly showing glimpses of the device - thought to be the "Rachael", or Xperia 3 handset, the video asks "What's next?"

The rumour mill has stepped in so far to answer that question with some spy shots and a few murmured specs, but it's not long now before all will be revealed. We will keep you posted.

LG's accidentally put a website for its forthcoming Android-powered GW620 handset live a little bit early. While we're expecting it to go down imminently, the site is full of latin text but does contain a few videos that demonstrate some of the functionality of the handset.

There's a 5-megapixel camera, full 5-row QWERTY keyboard, 3-inch touchscreen, 3.5mm headphone jack and microUSB port. On the inside, it comes equipped with Android (though not Android 2.0, it appears) with custom UI, a "social networking service manager", and some intriguing facial recognition software.

Check out the video above, complete with social networking butterfly, creepy stalker-owl and awesome QWERTY-toothed monster thing. There's no sign of any pricing or availability info yet, but it's due before the end of the year. We'll keep you posted.
