Watch your auctions from your handset

If you're a hardened eBay fiend, then you'll know the value of watching your auctions like a hawk. If you're desperate to bag that multipack of pipe cleaners in rare colours, or R2D2 pencil sharpener, or sample of Chuck Norris' nostril hair, then you have to be there when the auction finishes to sneak in a last minute bid.

Well, now BlackBerry owners have something else to obsessively check along with their email, as eBay has rolled out a BlackBerry App World application for the auction site. It lets users search for, track, and buy an item from their handset.?It accepts PayPal payments, and will notify you of your bidding status, as well as place reminders in your BlackBerry's calendar.

The app could prove dangerous for some - we have a friend who once bought a DVD box set of all the episodes of Saved By The Bell ever following a drunken night out. Imagine the carnage if he had that access on his phone. Thankfully it was just the original series, not "The College Years" or "The New Class".

The app is free and available now.

Fring has rolled out an update to its mobile phone application that allows users to conduct video calls over the mobile web. Fring video enables you to use both Wi-Fi and 3G to make calls to other Fring users or to your Skype or GTalk contacts.

Fring is an IM aggregator that connects up with IM networks like MSN, AIM, GoogleTalk and Skype, as well as social networks like?Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm. You can make voice calls over the service, using apps on Symbian, Android and iPhone handsets, and now video calls too.

However, for the moment the video functionality is limited to a small subset of Nokia devices - the N97 mini, N97, 5800, N95 8G, N95 and N82. Fring promises that the functionality will be rolled out across a number of other platforms "very shortly".

Grab the download from Fring's website.

Fring, the combined messaging service for mobile phone platforms from the iPhone to Android, has launched a new version of its software that allows users to make video calls from their phone.

Fring users can now make and receive internet video calls from mobile devices (for free), picking up their fring and Skype video calls from the road, and seeing the person they’re talking to from their mobile phone.

Fring video is currently only available on?Nokia?touch devices such as the?Nokia X6, N97mini, N97, 5800, N95, N95 8G and N82, however is promised for the iPhone, and Android handsets. Strange considering the iPhone doesn't sport a forward facing camera, and nor does any of the mainstream Android handsets like the HTC Hero or G1.

Currently the software, which is available for most mobile platforms, only allows you to text chat and talk with other contacts.

The app, which is virtually identical to the?Adobe Photoshop.com Mobile for iPhone?version, has been available in the US for some time on both the Apple iPhone and Android platform will let users around the globe quick access to their photos with easy editing and sharing.

No word from Adobe on whether the iPhone version will be making it to the UK, however it is expected to be, presumably once the application passes the usual Apple app process.?

HTC Hero, Droid Eris, Samsung Moment and Behold all miss out

Google has announced that all handsets running Android 1.6 will now be able to get?Google Maps Navigation?for free.

The news, which was announced on Monday, opens up the free GPS software beyond the Android 2.0 operating system and currently the only handset available, the?Droid by Motorola.

The new release, which aims to take on services from TomTom, Garmin and Navigon will, as long as you have a data connection, let you route your way around the US using the same Google Maps functionality, however, with a more traditional style GPS experience.

The release also includes the new Layers feature, which lets you overlay geographical information on the map. View My Maps, transit lines, Wikipedia articles about places, and more says Google.

If you have a phone running Android 1.6, you can download an updated version of Google Maps from Android Market to use Navigation today.

Android 1.6 phones in the US currently include the T-Mobile mytouch 3G,?the G1 and the HTC Tattoo, as well as the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. However handsets like the HTC Hero, Droid Eris, Samsung Moment and the Samsung Behold II all run Android 1.5 so won't be getting the new feature.

Google Maps Navigation is in beta and is currently available in the United States.

Some features of Android 2.0 are not available on Android 1.6, for example, the ability to use the "navigate to" voice command as shown in our demo video.

Seesmic, the Twitter client for the Mac, and recently PC, has announced that it is going mobile with BlackBerry and Android apps.

Leaving out the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android users will be able to get their Twitter feeds on their phone from Friday.

"Seesmic for BlackBerry groups all your Twitter timelines into a simple and clean interface", says Seesmic, with features for both apps including the ability to create and view saved searches, view Twitter lists that you've created on twitter.com, shorten urls and send photos, and configure notification alerts for Direct Messages and @Replies.

The news follows an earlier announcement this week that the company was launching a Windows 7 version.

Offers white label service for partners

If you think the proliferation of app stores among device manufacturers, mobile networks and just about any other company in the world was getting a little silly, you'll likely be alarmed to hear that Qualcomm is launching an initiative that could see any company set one up with the greatest of ease.

The white label service is called "Plaza" and represents an easily customisable app store (or "Mobile widgets" as Qualcomm is putting it) that can be as niche or mainstream as you like. "Any content, any network, any device" is apparently the company's motto for the project.

Qualcomm's EVP president of QIS & Europe told Pocket-lint that he thinks specialist boutique app stores that focus on one topic - sports and fitness, or music, for example - could prove as successful as device-centred app stores that have dominated the marketplace so far.

Qualcomm has an extensive website that details the options that it offers. What do you think - is the proliferation of app stores a good thing that'll create competition and drive down prices? Or will it just confuse consumers? Let us know in the comments.

Vodafone has expanded its Twitter options in the UK by offering a new service that allows Twitter users to retweet messages via SMS.

Vodafone customers can already send and receive SMS Twitter updates and now they can use the same number to retweet the most recent interesting posts from the people they are following.

Now available to Vodafone customers in the UK, to use the service, customers should send "RT twitter username" to 86444.

As an example, to retweet the most recent message from @VodafoneUK, you would type "RT VodafoneUK" which keeps it simple as it only works with the latest tweet from the Twitter account.

Sent texts will be charged at the standard network rate, or taken from the customer's SMS bundle where appropriate, says Vodafone.

After sending their message, customers will receive a free SMS notification confirming the message that they have just retweeted to their followers.

Vodafone customers will continue to receive SMS updates from Twitter free of charge.

The?TomTom for iPhone app has received an update on Wednesday bringing with it a number of promised features and a couple of new ones too.

New to the mix is compatibility for the original iPhone and iPod touch (all models), meaning that owners of the iPod touch, with the help of the TomTom Car Kit can get in on the?TomTom for iPhone GPS?action too.

Aside from that, features are as expected so that means advanced lane guidance for difficult junctions in both landscape and portrait mode, and text-to-speech functionality that will see street names and places read aloud as part of the spoken instructions.

In addition, TomTom's "Help Me" emergency feature from its in-car satnavs will be ported to the mobile platform, there'll be options to customise audio warnings, while maps and safety camera databases will see an update.

Finally the app will catch up with other offerings like CoPilot on the market by adding iPod player control "ensuring drivers can conveniently control their music from within the application".

The update is free to all those who have already downloaded the application.?

EXCLUSIVE: Sony Ericsson says "it should be expected."

Sony Ericsson has hinted that it could launch a "PS3" app similar to that found on the Sony Ericsson Aino handset launched earlier in the year for the Android OS, when the company's new?Xperia X10?handset launches in February.

"It makes a lot of sense for it to be on other handsets", said Christopher David, head of developer and partner engagement at Sony Ericsson, before backing up that statement with an "it should be expected".

It is not certain at this time whether an app, if developed, would be restricted to the X10 and Nexus UX platform or be available to all?Android?handsets, but could mean that phone users opting for devices sporting the Google Android OS could access their PlayStation 3 and stream content to their phone from around the world, in a similar way to the Sony Ericsson phone or the PSP console.

The phone, which packs the same DLNA and wireless connectivity as the Aino, before building on the specs with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset and 4-inch screen, would be a perfect hardware device for such an app, something that David acknowledges.

"For it to work you would need wireless and DLNA connectivity," said David, after we tried to lure more than an "it's possible" answer from the man, when asked to engage in the new Sony Ericsson Nexus UX platform for the X10.

As for other apps to expect in the future? David was keeping quiet, however we did get a chuckle and acknowledgement of a "good question asked" as to whether Sony Ericsson's Play Now store, that allows users to download movies and music, would get an Android app of its own.

"You never know", was the official response with a wry smile.?

WebSDK announced for new Android overlay

Sony Ericsson?has implied that it may bring its new?Android?skin destined for the?Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, the Nexus UX platform, to other devices.

"Nexus has been developed with a broader focus in mind", said Steve Walker, head of portfolio planning and communications for Sony Ericsson, following a question in an informal journalist briefing on whether we would see the new UI on other devices.

Although not going into specific details about specific products, Walker hinted in a further conversation with Pocket-lint that the new Nexus interface had been developed for devices of "all shapes and sizes".

The news comes as Sony Ericsson announces further details for its latest handset, the Xperia X10, which is due out in February 2010.

Working in what appears to be a similar way to HTC's Sense UI, Sony Ericsson will create a new "skin" for Android and Symbian OSes called the Nexus UX platform that offers a more graphical interface for users to get involved in.

Creating a dedicated WebSDK to accompany the new "skin", Sony Ericsson is hoping that by allowing developers to create apps specifically for Sony Ericsson handsets, it will help it gain the edge over other Android based handsets from Motorola or HTC.

"It is more than a UI skin", Christopher David, the man in charge of pushing the SDK to developers told us in a one to one interview. "The WebSDK, announced today allows developers to develop applications specifically for our phones and be sold in the PlayNow store".

Sony Ericsson will start the ball rolling with two applications, Timescape and Mediascape with the promise of many more over time.

Timescape will promise to manage all your communication with one person in one place, allowing you to browse through your conversations on Facebook, Twitter, photos, emails, and texts all in one go. Mediascape will focus on the multimedia elements to the handset, allowing you to search your phone for music, photos and videos as well as access interactive services like YouTube or PlayNow.

"We expect to have around a couple of hundred apps and plug-ins for Nexus at launch", David confirmed.

Other features of the new OS overlay include a feature that links faces with contact details at the touch of a button from within the phone on the fly.?

Sony Ericsson says that users will be able to download dedicated Sony Ericsson Android apps created using its WebSDK via its Play Now store rather than in Android Marketplace, however users will be able to access standard Android Marketplace as you would normally.?

The Xperia X10 is the first of many handsets that will use the platform, says Sony Ericsson, with the new handset acting as the flagship model when it hits stores in February.?

?

But you'll need to chop up an old one to make it work

A startup called RidRx has created an adaptor that'll allow you to mod an old stethoscope into a fully-functioning iPhone or iPod touch-enabled version of the heartbeat detector. It comes with a phone dock/holder and an app that will record and analyse the audio you capture.

It's called the iStethoscope Pro, and can't be sold for anything other than recreational use thanks to the US regulators. However, it could prove useful - if only for kids who want to prove an irregular heartbeat to their PE teachers so they're able to get out of rugby practice on a cold November morning.

The adaptor kit costs $30, but you'll need to provide your own stethoscope - which will likely set you back the best part of $100 too, unless you know a friendly Doctor. The app itself costs 99 cents and is available now on the iPhone App Store.

iPhone owning Star Wars fans hoping to relive the final battle scene of Star Wars, where you get a chance to take down the Death Star as if you were shooting Womp rats on Tatooine, can now do so following the launch of a new game for the iPhone.

Star Wars: Trench Run puts you in the cockpit of a Rebel X-Wing as you take on the Galactic Empire and is controlled by moving your iPhone forwards and backwards and side to side (thanks to the accelerometer).

The games developers, THQ, have said that the game adds special graphical features for the iPod touch second-generation, iPhone 3GS and other future devices meaning users will get a better graphics experience where possible.

The game is available to download from the App Store and costs $4.99 in the US and ?2.99 in the UK.?

 Well, all 6.x handsets, anyway

Microsoft's Windows Mobile Application Markplace has opened a little wider to encompass any handset running Windows Mobile 6.0 or above. Previously, it was only available to handsets running the very latest version - Windows Mobile 6.5.

The catalogue contains over 800 apps, so it rivals Palm's App Catalog, but both remain a drop in the ocean compared to the Android and iPhone app stores. Still, developers might be more keen to develop for Windows Mobile now that more than a handful of phones can access it.

However, there's always been a vast ecosystem of Windows Mobile applications - they're just not all concentrated in one place. Microsoft now has a hell of a task in front of it, in attempting to collect them together. You can grab it by hitting up mp.windowsphone.com in your phone browser.

 webOS joins iPhone and Android

Compared to the might of the iPhone App Store, and slightly-less-but-still-respectable presence of the Android Market, Palm's webOS App Catalog, used by the Pre and the Pixi, looks decidedly lacklustre.

However, it has just got a tiny bit bigger with the addition of an official Facebook application. It's not exactly extensive - just delivering an unfiltered live stream of your friends' activities with the ability to comment and "like" particular items.

You can post to it yourself, and add a picture, but that's pretty much it. No events, information, search or anything else. Still, something is better than nothing, right? You'll need webOS 1.3.1, and you should be able to find it in the webOS App Catalog.

Let us know what you think of the app in the comments.

An iPhone application that costs ?600 is proving surprisingly popular, according to its makers. The iVIP Black application offers more than the "I Am Rich" app (which was withdrawn from the App Store by Apple) - it gives access to an "exclusive network".

That network includes privileges and benefits across a range of luxury partners including private islands, a concierge, supercar club, private jets, theatres, members’ clubs, butlers, and various other options. It's not just there to display on your homescreen to display how wealthy you are, though of course it does that too.

Users who download the app are required to fill out a "High Net Worth Individual certification", so only "millionaires" are permitted to use it. However, the price does include a consultation where your personal copy of iVIP is customised to suit your needs. "There is no privilege, experience or desire that cannot be incorporated", says the company.

If you don't want to splash out six hundred squid, there's the option of iVIP Blue for ?280, which doesn't give you the consultation, but does offer the same access to the services listed above. And if you don't want to spend anywhere near that amount, then there'll soon be iVIP Red - a preview app that has full functionality but no access to the iVIP network.

Ridiculous, or a way of differentiating yourself from the masses? Tell us what you think in the comments box below.

EXCLUSIVE: Start your engine... from your phone

A system that can be fitted to your car allowing you to unlock it and even start it from anywhere around the world is to be launched in the UK, Pocket-lint has learnt.

Viper Smart Start, already available in the US, can be retro-fitted to any car and allows you to lock and unlock your car, open the boot, find it by setting off the alarm and even start it all from an iPhone/iPod touch app.

"We plan to bring the system to the UK in early 2010", a spokesman for the company told us at the CES Unveiled event in New York.

The system, which currently costs around $500 in the UK with a service fee of $29.99 a year after the first year, works by installing a box of tricks that is connected to a GSM phone in your car.

Supposedly popular with Americans, the system is designed for those who want to shed bulky key fobs from their pocket as well as those who want their vehicle warmed up in cold weather or cooled down in hot weather, before they get in to drive it.

"This may seem like a luxury but in extreme climates it is virtually a necessity as well as a safety factor", claims the company.

Those worried about starting their car from the other side of the world shouldn't be. You'll still need the key to drive away.

?

 Also offers nearby contact alerts

Google has rolled out a couple of interesting updates to its Latitude location platform. The software, which runs on your mobile phone and tracks your location, as well as displaying the location of selected contacts, can now display your location history over time.

The company is being cautious over privacy, so you have to enable the feature manually, but once you do it'll keep a record of everywhere you've been. You can choose to delete selected history, or your entire history, should you so desire. You can export it to Earth or Maps, and view a playback of a chunk of history (perhaps a road trip) in order.

The other addition is still in beta, and is called Location Alerts. It lets you choose to be notified by text or email if a friend is nearby. However, given that some people might have a family member or co-worker with Latitude in the same house or office, it also filters those notifications so you're not being constantly bombarded.

Cleverly, it recognises your regular locations and won't give you alerts when you're at those places. You'll only get them when you're at an unusual place or at a usual place at an unusual time. Apparently it takes about a week to "learn" those locations.

Are these additions useful, or a little too creepy? Let us know in the comments.

?

The Mozilla Foundation has unveiled a logo for its forthcoming Firefox-based mobile phone browser. The project, also known as Fennec, is an attempt by the non-profit to build a browser for mobile handsets that's as popular as the desktop version. Currently, the most popular third party mobile browser is Opera.

The browser is only available in very early alpha versions for Symbian, Windows Mobile and in beta for the forthcoming Nokia N900, but promises the same "AwesomeBar", add-ons and tabbing functionality as the desktop variant. You'll also be able to sync your history, preferences and bookmarks between your desktop and mobile computers.

The new logo was designed by Yaroslaff Shekunov, who lives in Krasnodar, Russia. He cited his inspirations as "Firefox itself, your approach to the web-site execution, and of course my wife". He has a whole pile of other Mozilla designs too, that you might want to check out.

Firefox's normal logo was designed in 2004 by Jon Hicks, a graphic designer from Oxfordshire who was frustrated by the Camino compass and decided to design his own variant. Mozilla liked it, and he now consults on many aspects of Firefox's identity.

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a designer, Firefox is currently hosting a "Five Years of Firefox" competition to celebrate its anniversary. Entries for that close on 9 December, so you'll want to get your skates on. Hit up the challenge page for more details.

Promises to make contact book more relevant

Xobni?has offered further details of what the mobile version of its Outlook plug-in will offer and suggested a launch date to delegates at the BlackBerry Developer Conference in San Francisco on Monday.

"Xobni for mobile will be more like your automatic address book made up of all the thousands of people you may have communicated with over the years", the company has said.

According to the firm, who already offers a way for?Outlook?users to sieve through their contacts, the typical user "has 5-10x the number of contacts in their email inbox versus their Outlook address book".

Features outlined at the conference include Xobni Rank, which lists contacts in ranked order depending on the freshness and depth of your relationship, says the company.

According to Xobni (inbox spelt backwards by the way) the app will quickly find anyone you’ve ever communicated with, along with the context of your relationship, in ranked order.

"Most people know more than one Mike. Xobni Rank delivers every Mike you know in ranked order based on how often and how recently you communicated with him. So, the Mike Zander, whom you just spoke with yesterday and email one time per week will be listed above the Mike Andler, who was CC’d in an email once by your coworker".

Although originally slated for a summer 09 launch date, the company has said that it looks more likely to be early 2010 before the app will be available.

We will keep you posted.

The new update, which is now available in the Apple App Store, allows?Sonos owners?to tweet what they are listening to, as well as tweaking the menu system with new icons and logos for the relevant music service.

Adobe Photoshop.com Mobile for iPhone?app?has come to the Android platform the company has announced.

Following on from the launch of the iPhone app in the US in October, the company has rolled out the "Free" app on the Google OS.

The Android application equips consumers with same image-editing tools, colour adjustments and instant photo-sharing capabilities.

Users get photo-editing tools like crop, rotate and flip as well as "effects" like the Soft Focus filter, which can be used to create a blur effect and for performing color adjustments such as exposure, saturation, tint changes and classic black-and-white.

Due to the ability to multi-task, something the iPhone can't do, Adobe says users will be able to automatically upload pictures to Photoshop.com albums in the background, even when the app isn't running.

As with the iPhone app, the application is currently available in the US and Canada only.

 Who needs 100,000 official apps?

Who needs official apps (all 100,000 of them)?when there are a handful of apps that aren't approved and available to anyone wishing to "Jailbreak" their iPhone.

With?BlackRa1n?now unlocking the latest 3.1.2 firmware and Apple's app process going potty at times, here are 12 Jailbreak apps to get you started*:

BlackRa1n

It comes as part of the blackra1n unlock and jailbreak and basically lets you install the three main unofficial app stores - Cydia, Rock and Icy. From here you then install apps, change themes and basically run amok.

Price: Free

3G Unrestrictor

This 99 cent app does what its name suggests and unrestricts apps like Skype that don't currently allow you to use them over a 3G connection. Load it up, select the applications you want unrestricted and then you can use them on the network without the need to find a wireless network. Good apps to try it with are the iTunes' and App store's (10MB limits disappear), Skype for using SkypeOut over the 3G network and SlingMedia's SlingPlayer for iPhone.

Price: 99 cents

GV Mobile

Apple may have pulled the Google Voice for mobile app in the official App Store, but that doesn't mean you can't get it in the unofficial one - Cydia. As long as you've got a Google Voice account (US only at the moment) you can then make calls, access your contacts list and generally use the service to its fullest without having to mess around with a web widget.

Price: Free

qTweeter

There are plenty of free and paid for legitimate Twitter apps for the iPhone. qTweeter is different in that it is just an app for firing out those thought provoking 140 character sentences you know you are good at. Swipe your finger down from the top of the screen at any point, whether you are in an app or not, and qTweeter will allow you to post a tweet or Facebook status update in seconds. You can attach pictures, video and the URL from whatever page you are on in Safari.

Price: $4.99

Backgrounder

The iPhone doesn't allow multi-tasking of apps, but this app lets you do just that. Of course running applications in the background will have a serious drain on your iPhone battery performance if left running, but for people who like to Skype or run multiple apps, this allows you to jump to and from them without having to boot up the app every time.

Price: Free

Kirikae

Ignore the name - it has nothing to do with what this app actually does. Instead it will allow you, on a double tap of your home key, to see what apps are running on the iPhone as well as letting you access a list of favourite apps to load quickly. Working in harmony with Backgrounder, it basically lets you see what you've got running and better still allows you to close them if you've forgotten.

Price: Free

WinterBoard

Apple spent a long time designing the iPhone interface to be simple and effective in its design, but if that design just doesn't cut it you can install WinterBoard, which allows you to install themes and other functions, thereby altering how the iPhone user interface looks. Want a colourful picture instead of the black on your background? No problem. What about an Android or Palm webOS theme? You can do that as well. The app even lets you determine how many apps appear on each page.

Price: Free

Cycorder

Apple added video recording functionality to the iPhone 3GS, but for 3G owners that means you got zip. Not with this app. Cycorder basically allows your iPhone 3G to record video, even though Apple don't think you should. The app will capture video at 15 frames per second at a resolution 384 x 288 saving the end result as a QuickTime Movie.

Price: Free

PDAnet

AT&T still isn't offering tethering in the US, while in the UK O2 and Orange will charge you extra. Luckily for those who need to use their iPhone as a modem for their computer there is PDAnet, an app that, you guessed it, allows you to bypass the tethering blocks on the phone, allowing your computer to connect to the Internet. The application lets you connect a laptop via a Wi-Fi connection to the phone or via USB cable to Windows PCs. A warning though, if your operator finds out you could be disconnected.

Price: Free

TV-Out

Apple lets you connect your iPhone to your TV, with an approved cable, enabling you to watch YouTube videos or videos you've got stored in iTunes. However anything else is out of bounds. TV-Out lets you basically watch anything on the TV, be it a game, your email, Safari, Google maps, or anything else you can think of.

Price: Free

StatusNotifier

Turn on your iPhone and you're presented with a picture of the world and a "slide to unlock" command. Not very helpful is it? But what if you could fill that opening screen with a note telling you whether you've SMS, email, or IM messages you've got unread.

Price:?Free

BossPrefs

This is a management app that allows you to quickly turn off certain features of your iPhone without having to go through the setting pane. You get control over all the key elements like location, Bluetooth, brightness, EDGE, WiFi, as well as the ability to hide icons. You can even force a reboot or power off without having to press a physical button.

Price: Free

More

There are of course plenty more applications available. Which ones do you use? Share them in the comments below.

*Jailbreaking your Apple iPhone will void the warranty leaving you without official support if the handset goes wrong for any reason. Basically doing so means you are on your own.

Google has announced its search by voice service is available as a free download for Nokia S60 phones such as Nseries or Eseries handsets.

Google explains: "The new version of Google Mobile App places a shortcut to Google search on your Nokia phone's home screen, allowing you to search using your voice or by typing. You can search for anything - from "movie times", to "fish 'n chips", to "masala dosa." It doesn't matter if you're in London or Bangalore: we'll use your location to give you nearby results. And Google Mobile App shows search results in the application, so you don't have to wait for a web browser to launch to get an answer".

The new version of Google Mobile App for Nokia S60 devices works for Mandarin speakers too, with support for Mandarin speech recognition such as Android and iPhone in the works.

Promises 3-second load times on newer smartphones

Google has unveiled a new version of the Gmail web interface for the iPhone and Android handsets. The last edition was released back in April, but since then the company has made a whole host of improvements, making the mobile version nearly as feature-complete as its desktop equivalent.

Google says: "Over the last six months, we've added a lot: mute, label management, keyboard shortcuts, smart links, an outbox, and the ability to move messages (label and archive in one step)".

"Some new features, like swipe-to-archive and auto-expanding compose boxes, take advantage of these mobile phones' unique properties. We also made address auto-complete faster, enhanced refresh capabilities, and sped up loading so Gmail for mobile starts in under three seconds on newer smartphones".

To get the update, you'll need to go to Gmail.com in your mobile browser, and when we tested it on an HTC Hero we had to download and install a small amount of data, presumably to enable the speed enhancements and offline support.

Unfortunately it doesn't hook into the notifications section of Android devices - they take you to the platform's default, but limited, Gmail app instead. We'd expect improvements to the default Gmail app in future Android builds, like Donut and Eclair.

?

Google Voice, the currently US only based telephone service from?Google, has announced that it will be allowing users to use their own number to collect messages rather than having to use a dedicated Google number.

"Up until now, if you wanted to use Google Voice, you needed to choose a new number (a "Google number"). Taking calls through your Google number allows us to offer features like call recording, call screening and getting text messages via email", Craig Walker, Vincent Paquet & Pierre Lebeau, product managers said in a blog post.

Clearly struggling to convince people to change their number to a "Google number" the service, which is free for all national calls, now lets you "have the choice to get Google Voice with your existing mobile number OR with a Google number".

Google Voice users need to just log in and change their settings for the new feature to take effect.

NASA has put together an iPhone application that'll let budding space-heads keep track of intersteller goings-on from their mobile phones. The app, which was released on 23 Oct, is called "NASA App For iPhone".

It allows users to view images about space, get information about specific missions and view videos and Twitter feeds. There's a few other features too - you can view exactly where the International Space Station - or other satellites - are at any given time, and view NASA's image of the day and astronomy image of the day.?

The objective, of course, is to increase public interest in space again. NASA has had a hard time since the 60s in keeping in the public eye, and has struggled with funding for that reason. An iPhone app won't turn its fortunes around single-handedly, but should hopefully keep people focused on the skies, even if it's via their iPhone screens.

COMMENT: How will the networks cope with next bombshell?

The days of the mobile phone being just a device for making emergency calls are far behind us, but while most of us have handsets that can at least play music or download our email on the go, the biggest fear now facing mobile phone operators and carriers around the world is the ability to use the mobile Internet connection that we all feel is our right, to stream live television over the network.

They say you wait forever and then two buses come at once. And that's exactly what happened for the iPhone in the last seven days. Not one live streaming TV service, but two were launched. The result is that O2 in the UK has had to issue a warning over the?TVCatchup iPhone site, one of the services that if users use too much, means they could be cut off.

Meanwhile AT&T in the US had to move in to get a new app by TV tuner maker?Elgato?that allowed users to stream television from a TV tuner plugged into their Mac directly to their iPhone over the 3G network, changed.

While Apple has the power to force a change in the app, something they have?done, and O2 to block the streaming service, something they are threatening, other handset platforms, which are more open, like Android or Symbian, don't have as operator friendly approach and that's before you even start to address jailbroken apps that allow offerings like SlingPlayer Mobile to work on the 3G network.?

The problem of course isn't about you watching television, although it does raise questions about TV licensing laws in the UK, but about the strain on the network.

Strangely operators like O2 and AT&T are already struggling under the strain of supplying data requests to all it's smartphone users. Add in a constant stream of large amounts of data, i.e., from a popular streaming TV service, and I wouldn't be surprised if the networks around the globe buckle massively under the strain.

Forget the previous concerns of the operators in losing revenue over VoIP calls, thanks to services like Skype and Google Voice, think about the cost of managing a network that is now about data, rather than calls without the ability to charge SMS prices.

So what's the solution? In the short term I wouldn't be surprised if mobile operators moved to either ban them outright or move to create a tiered data system aimed at those who want to consume the larger data content over those that don't.

We might have moved into an "all you can eat" pricing model at the moment in the form of "unlimited" packages, but that is no longer beneficial for the operators for the admittedly minority users who are heavy consumers of data.

While I would love to believe that heavy data users will be able to continue as is, I just can't see that happening. A tiered system based on speed or data consumption would benefit virtually everyone just as it does in the fixed (landline) broadband market. Those who need to stream movies or games can do so with a service that fits their needs, and more importantly have the right to complain if it doesn't. Those who just need email or basic websurfing can do that too.

Whatever the handset or the app one thing is certain - the headache facing operators on how to manage the network, and therefore our expectations of it are only going to get worse.

Waveboard works on Macs, and will be arriving for iPhone soon

In our first-look review of Google Wave, we argued that - like Twitter - Wave needs applictions for it to be truly useful. The first of those desktop applications has arrived - albeit in a very limited state and only for Mac users.

Waveboard is currently in version 0.4, and is being called "simple and practical" by users who've tested it. All it does is put the web interface in its own Window, as if it was in your browser. It also puts out notifications when things happen via its dock symbol, menu entry and a growl notification. Not much for now, but still better than the web interface.

The same developer also has an iPhone version, which is featured in the brief video above. That's not quite out yet, but it's been submitted to the App Store for approval. When it's up and ready for download, we'll be sure to let you know.

 Earlier version reinstated temporarily

Elgato, a company that makes TV watching software for Macs, released an iPhone application at the end of September which allowed users to watch live television and previously made from their handset when in range of a Wi-Fi connection.

Except that it also did something else. The company accidentally left in code that'd allow users to stream video over 3G connections too - a feature that it had just been using for testing purposes. That broke Apple's rules, so within hours of the feature being noticed the app had disappeared from the App Store.

Elgato told Pocket-lint: "Some test code that enabled live TV streaming over the cellular network was accidentally left in the the EyeTV App. Apple requested that we remove the code since their agreement with AT&T does not allow redirecting TV signals over the cellular network".

"The code was removed and a 1.0.1 version of the EyeTV app was submitted. We expect EyeTV to return to the App Store when the 1.0.1 version is approved".

And return it did - very quickly and in its original rule-breaking 1.0.0 form. Previously downloaded copies haven't been remotely removed from handsets by Apple, either. Instead of the normally hardline approach that Apple takes towards its App Store, it's showing uncharacteristic kindness.

Elgato expects the old version currently on the store to get replaced with 1.0.1 as soon as it's approved, and we wouldn't be surprised if Apple forced a software update on 1.0.0 owners when that happens. Still, it seems like the icy heart of the App Store has melted just a little.

 Version 1.7 arrives

It's being reported that Facebook has rolled out an update to its BlackBerry client. Version 1.7 is now available and can be found and downloaded on both on the BlackBerry App World and on blackberry.com/facebook and m.facebook.com.

The new features list isn't very long, and revolves mainly around the news feed. You can now set the news feed as your landing page when you start the app, and the desktop version's "filters" are also present, meaning that you can view just status updates, for example, or photos, or links.

There's a menu option that allows you to view your own profile now, too, as well as a number of caching improves that'll mean your handset's memory won't be battered by the app. Lastly, you'll no longer have to wait while your Facebook feeds are updated - they get pre-fetched.

If you're living in BlackBerry-land then give it a try and let us know what you think of Facebook version 1.7.

 Just another augmented reality app?

Layar, the augmented reality browser which lets you search Google Local for locations in your area and then overlay them on an image captured by your camera, has now been made available for the iPhone 3GS.

Long a favourite of Android users, the app displays information based on the direction you're facing. You can spin around in circles to view different results until you're dizzy and fall over. Notably, it's based on an open architecture so it can grab information off any service that wants to talk to it.

In a test search for "pubs" we found it accurately displayed all the local pubs in the area, and even some that had closed down. You're not limited to Google local, either - you can also view Wikipedia info, local Twitter users, public transport points, Flickr photos, property for sale or restaurant recommendations.

Layar is a free download for the iPhone 3GS and Android.

 Other devices on the way

Xobni is a plugin for Outlook which allows you to make more of your connections with people. Building on the theory that you're likely to email - at some point - almost everyone you know, it builds up an address book for you - tying that address book in with services like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Earlier in the year, news of a BlackBerry edition of the software appeared. The mobile version promised the same functionality and options but on a mobile device. It was originally promised for "the summer", but the release of the mobile app has now slipped to "early next year".

In a chat with Eric Grafstrom, Xobni's VP Sales and Business Development, Pocket-lint learnt that the company will also be bringing apps on more mobile platforms. Some are easier than others, though, said Grafstrom, and not much development has apparently taken place outside of the BlackBerry ecosystem yet.

The team are also working on making it easier for big companies to roll out Xobni on lots of computers at once, but desktop users?shouldn't expect too many changes over the next 6 months or so. "More customization might be offered, more data sources, but no major new features", said Grafstrom.

And what do Xobni make of Wave, Google's attempt to rid the world of email? "It's interesting", said Grafstrom. "We've played with it, but we've not started developing for it yet. We have no near term plans in that area".

Xobni is a free download for Microsoft Outlook, and there's a paid version too which allows you to refine searches, view appointments and get better contact suggestions. The upgrade costs $30, one-off.

EXCLUSIVE: NBA Live will be first of many

EA has said that where relevant it will include graphical optimisation for the iPhone 3GS in its games for the phone platform.

The news comes as the company is gearing up to release a number of games in the next couple of weeks including NBA Live, which will have graphics that use the extra processing power in the 3GS.

"We won't just release a game that only works on the 3GS", an EA spokesman told Pocket-lint, "however we will add extra shadows and use the processor to the full if the game warrants it."

The result of the optimisation is extra shadows, smoother cutscene playback and overall better graphics.

Although not shown to Pocket-lint as yet, EA said that?Need for Speed: Shift?for the iPhone and iPod touch currently in development, would also be optimised for the 3GS.

Watch live(ish) TV on your mobile phone

TVCatchup, a company based in Britain which allows the watching of live television on its website, managed to get itself into trouble with broadcasters last year after offering a free program recording service, which it was then forced to suspend after its hosting was terminated by its ISP.

However, the site has now launched an iPhone (or iPod Touch) version of its website that allows anyone who visits iphone.tvcatchup.com on their handset to watch live UK television, albeit with a delay of about a minute.

It won't work outside of the UK, but within the country it claims that it's completely legitimate. A mobile version had originally been planned for early 2008 but was abandoned after browsers that supported Flash (like SkyFire) began to appear on mobile phones.

The iPhone, which still doesn't support Flash, was left out of the party, but this new solution offers playlist downloads to get around the problem. If you have an iPhone or iPod touch then give it a go and let us know what you think.

Adobe is the latest company to launch an iPhone app, according to an announcement on Friday.

The free app, currently only available in US and Canadian iTunes stores, will allow users to edit their photos, apply effect and share images from their phone via the company's Photoshop.com offering.

“Now, with access to powerful editing and sharing tools, iPhone users are armed with the resources to document all of life’s unexpected moments, make them look their best and then re-live those memories with friends and family", said the company in a statement.

Using your finger, would be digital artists will be able to touch up, crop, rotate and flip their photos as well as adjust colour, saturation, tint, exposure and vibrancy, and convert them to black and white.

Floodgates for Skype, Vonage, and Google Voice open

AT&T has confirmed that it will enable VoIP applications like Sykpe, and Vonage on the iPhone to run on its 3G network on Tuesday.

The news opens the floodgates for more services such as Google's Voice application and other third party apps, and follows a FCC investigation currently still proceeding over Apple's decision to decline approval for Google's iPhone Voice application.

"In late summer, AT&T said it was taking a fresh look at VoIP capabilities on iPhone for use on AT&T’s 3G network, consistent with its regular review of device features and capabilities to ensure attractive options for consumers", the company says in a statement, before stating that "today’s decision was made after evaluating our customers’ expectations and use of the device compared to dozens of others we offer".

"We applaud today's announcement by AT&T to open up its 3G network to Internet calling applications such as Skype. It is the right step for AT&T, Apple, millions of mobile Skypers and the Internet itself", Josh Silverman, president of Skype said.

Throwing the ball back into Apple's court, a spokesman for Skype told Pocket-lint that it is waiting "for Apple to update their SDK rules, which they've said they'll be doing shortly", before being able to release an update with 3G capabilities for iPhone users.

The Windows phones of the very near future

It may not have been quite the upgrade Microsoft had conceived of with the company's initial route map for 2009 but the launch of Windows Phone/Windows Mobile 6.5 today comes with no less ceremony. Naturally, an operating system is all very well and good so, here are some of the first flush of Windows phones to show it off.

HTC Touch2

The handset almost synonymous with the launch of Windows Phone is the HTC Touch2, codenamed the HTC Mega when the web first got whiff of it. It has a full 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen, a 3.2-megapixel camera, 256MB of internal memory, a microSD expansion slot, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and HTC's TouchFLO interface which will sit on top of Windows Mobile 6.5. If you've seen a demo of the OS, it was probably done on this handset.

Samsung Omnia II (i8000)

You could almost fill an article on Windows phones with what Samsung has planned alone given that four of the company's 6.5-toting Omnia variations are set for launch this month. The pick of the crop for the consumer is probably the I800 or Omnia II which features a 3.7-inch AMOLED touch display, a 5-megapixel camera, aGPS, up to 32GB memory via microSD, Wi-Fi and Samsung's reskin UI known as TouchWiz 2.0. For those on more of a budget, it's also worth looking out for the B7300 Omnia LITE which is largely the same as its bigger brother but with just a 3-inch WQVGA and a lower resolution 3-megapixel camera. Both handsets, come with the Professional version of Windows Mobile 6.5 and support HSDPA.

LG GM750

LG is never one to slouch in the face of technological advances and, at IFA, the Korean competitor promised 13 phones before 2010, three of which will feature Windows Mobile 6.5. The one we know most about at the moment is the all touch screen LG GM750. It will be rolled out today in Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the UK on Vodafone and in France on SFR. It has a 3-inch screen, supports Wi-Fi, HSDPA, GPS and also houses a healthy 5-megapixel camera.

Toshiba TG01

One familiar face which is now offering a free upgrade from Windows Mobile 6.1 is the Toshiba TG01 exclusive to Orange. The hardware will remain the same with its crystal clear 4.1-inch WVGA touchscreen display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5-megapixel camera and super thin design but the multicolour strip GUI will disappear. The resistive touchscreen means that it makes no difference that Windows Phone offers no multi-touch support anyway but it's the Toshiba REGZA technology in the device for the increased colour gamut on the screen that is the highlight of this handset. A good choice for video.

HTC HD2

Just when you thought they couldn't get any bigger, flatter and faster; the world got wind of the 4.3-inch HTC HD2 (previously known as the Leo). It features a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 448MB RAM, 3.5G speeds, a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus, microSD slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS and a 3.5mm jack - all of which puts it in direct competition with the TG01. What's more, it trumps Toshiba with a capacitive display capable of multi-touch and all the experience of HTC's mobile technology.

RIM gets its own music download platform.

The iPhone has iTunes. Android has Amazon MP3, at least in the States and Nokia has Comes with Music, but until now BlackBerry and Windows Mobile users were sat in the cold.

BlackBerry's now been invited into the warm confines of the party, leaving poor old Windows Mobile still outside. 7digital, alongside announcing that it's launching in the States, has revealed that its previously-planned application for BlackBerry users to download music is now here.

The app is free, and works on the BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Curve 8900 and BlackBerry Tour in North America. By the end of the week, 7digital tells us, the company will have it working on the BlackBerry Storm and BlackBerry Curve 8520, too.

It's available in the UK, the USA, Germany and Spain, and should launch shortly in Canada. It's been built by DevelopIQ, and works on both Wi-Fi and 3G. In the latter case, when you buy a track it'll download a 64kbps version over 3G, before upgrading it automatically to a 320kbps one when you next connect to a Wi-Fi network.

It can run in the background, unlike an iPhone application, and it can also stream audio over Bluetooth to devices. DevelopIQ is working on push functionality that'll allow any tracks bought on your PC to be pushed automatically to your BlackBerry over Wi-Fi, too.

The app is available now from BlackBerry App World.

The marketplace, My Phone and just what happened to multi-touch

Want to know what all the fuss is about? Read our quick guide to find out more about what the changes are, what they mean, and how they affect you. We'll also give you a run down of the good and bad points.

What is Windows Phone?

It's the rebranded name of Windows Mobile. As part of Microsoft's long term strategy the company has chosen to ditch the Windows Mobile title as of the release of version 6.5 and just refer to it as Windows Phone. On the one hand it's supposed to simplify the OS and extend the software to handsets such that people refer to them as Windows phones but it's also not a bad way to try to drop some of the stink surrounding what has never quite been the platform that it could be. It also helps to refer to the operating system as something in its own right like the iPhone OS rather than being a squished down, mobile version of what you get on a full size PC.

What's changed from Windows Mobile 6.1?

Sadly not as much as we'd all like. Windows Mobile 6.5 was announced back in February at Mobile World Congress but only as a stop gap while the delayed Windows Mobile 7 was put back to 2010. As a result, there is no multi-touch to keep the Windows phones up with the likes of Android, S60 and iPhone and you still have to use a stylus for certain applications. The biggest change is the GUI on the front of the system which has been simplified considerably, made much more user-friendly and more like the Zune interface. It's less fiddly and goes to an Android/iPhone/S60-like menu screen of three columns of app icons when you press start rather than folder expansion. Everything from e-mail to Bluetooth is now set up through better looking wizards and the whole thing is really targeted at users looking to make the step up from a feature phone to a smartphone. The back end of the software is largely the same.

What about apps? Do we finally get apps?

Yes indeed. Microsoft announced a codename project to go with 6.5 called SkyMarket which has in fact turned out to be the long awaited Windows Marketplace for Mobile expected to go live as the OS is launched. There are currently 731 developers working worldwide on more than 200 initial applications that will be available when the marketplace opens. Developers get a 70% cut of the profits after paying a $99 fee for a year's licence unless they're registered as students from Microsoft in which case the licence will be free.

Apps so far include a number of business solutions as well as Facebook, MySpace, Netflix, Twikini, WunderRadio, Zagat and games like Revenge of the Fallen, Sudoku, Transformers and the Pac-Man series. Browsing the Marketplace is a straight forward affair with the usual lists of genres and top sellers and the Zune-look menus also have a section for your operator's app store which is sure to please the networks if no one else.

What else?

Microsoft's mobile synching cloud service is the other main area of note which is known as My Phone. It's been in beta for 7 months but on launch users will get 200MB of storage where they can save SMS, contacts and images which they can also publish on Flickr, MySpace and Facebook straight from their phones. Much like another smartphone service out there, you'll also be able to remotely lock your phone should you lose it, locate it on a map from its last synch, send out a "please return to" message, make it ring even if on silent and, if all else fails, wipe the data. There will also be a premium service with more storage available.

The final update of significance is of the Internet Explorer mobile browser which works in a standard desktop view mode as well as a mobile format and there are other Microsoft applications you'll find on-board include Windows Live, Bing, Mobile Office Communicator and Microsoft Online Service (Exchange and SharePoint).

Good points and bad points

Well, it certainly looks better and the simplification and face lift appear to be a definite step in the right direction. The fact that 6.5 has come as a stop gap doesn't really help with the biggest disappointment of all the missing multi-touch and the fact that certain programs, such as Windows Media Player, still need the use of the stylus. HTC has added a multi-touch front to the OS but many of the applications like Explorer will still not support it. It's a fairly low cost option which should make it a competitive option for those making a step up and it will coexist in the market when Windows Phone 7 is released next year.

How do I get it

Unfortunately, you can't just upgrade your version of Windows Mobile 6.1. It would require an update of the firmware as sent by your operator who will not necessarily do this for free. Your handset might also not be able to cope with it but, of course, there are always more shady unofficial ways of making the switch yourself. For most, it will be a case of buying a specific handset. The platform will launch on the HTC Touch2 but there will also be Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Motorola Windows Phones coming soon, as well as an upgrade for the HTC Touch HD Pro.

Free to open sourcers and a review-free route

Palm has opened up its webOS app distribution programme with the news that open source developers can opt out of the $99 registration fee and $50 approval process as well as options that will see developers bypass the official app store.

Although Palm will still happily take the dollars for those that want membership to the Palm developer program and to see their apps in the on-device Palm App Catalog, it is now not a necessary criteria to develop for the Pre and Pixi.

Developers that want to go it alone can choose to self-certify that the app meets the Palm User Interface Guidelines and Palm Application Content Criteria and will then receive a unique URL to start promoting the app online within hours.?

Palm says this URL can be used in anywhere online "and you can begin selling these applications immediately, without review by Palm" with the apps delivered directly to devices using Palm's over-the-air distribution mechanism.

Palm announced that the webOS developer program will officially open in December

 Hiding in the App Store

The Apple iPhone already has six Flash based applications available to download via the App Store, Adobe has said.

The news, which might come as a surprise to Apple, has been possible through a new authoring package from the company that is more famous for its Photoshop line of products.

"The next version of Flash Authoring will enable developers to create stand-alone iPhone applications using Flash technologies", says Adobe in a blog post.

Although stressing that doesn't mean the iPhone is about to play internet video or adverts on the sites you currently visit, it should open up the possibility of more Flash based applications in the App Store.

Currently, in private beta, the company is hoping to invite in more developers by the end of the year in a public offering.

iPhone owners looking to try out Flash on the iPhone will be able to download either: That Roach Game, Just Letters, Chroma Circuit, Fickleblox, Red Hood, and Trading Stuff from the App Store right now.

"One thing that I really want to stress though, is that developing for the iPhone is mobile/device development. The iPhone has a significantly slower processor and less memory than what can be found in a typical desktop computer", said Mike Chambers at Adobe.

Earlier on Monday, Adobe announced a number of deals with manufacturers of almost all the world's major smartphones. It's done deals with RIM (who produce the BlackBerry handsets), Symbian, Windows Mobile, Palm, and Google.

Adobe has said that it is still working on creating an Adobe Flash plug-in for the Safari browser, something that isn't currently available.

Nokia has added a new feature to its Ovi Maps service that will allow users to find points of interest, but also to make contributions themselves. It's called "Good Things".

The idea is that locals know an area best, and allowing them to recommend great restaurants, hidden-away locations and other nifty little things that people who "aren't from round 'ere" might not know.

Earlier in the year, Nokia Interactive's head of sales - John Stoneman - laid the philosophical groundwork for the move, explaining how to monetise such an application:

"If users are just trying to find a route from A to B then advertisers will have to be fairly serendipitous to be able to guess what will interest them as they pass, or they're going to have to bombard them with so many ads that they will become frustrated - which will result in a bad user experience".

Good Things will be available in 25 countries, and should be launched on mobile handsets and on the Web imminently.

So what was the milestone puzzler?

Text-based question and answer service AQA 63336 has announced it has reached the impressive milestone of answering its 20 millionth question.

The milestone puzzler, asked 6pm on 29 September, was: "Which hero featured in books by Captain W E Johns?". As fans of the series will know, the answer is Biggles.

The most popular question ever, asked by 47,189 customers since April 2004, is apparently "how does AQA work?" The second most popular question, with 31,350 questions in 5 years, is "what's the meaning of life?"

As far as unusual or notable answers go, AQA says they've sorted out a rescue team for someone stuck in the jungle in Thailand and predicted a winning race horse, netting the punter ?33k.

T-Mobile has launched a new mobile application, the Recycle Guide, which it says "takes the confusion out of what you can recycle and where, both at home and on the go within the UK".

The app offers users info on exactly where the nearest recycling points are, drawn from the largest recycling database in the UK.

As well as info about standard items to recycle, there's also details on where to recycle items such as mobile phones and Christmas trees.

In addition, the Android version lets users pledge to recycle a certain amount and share that promise with a friend.

The application works on most modern mobiles and can be downloaded for free from www.thespark.t-mobile.co.uk or by texting RECYCLE to 80988.

French company Withings has announced the launch of its Wi-Fi enabled body scale, which it claims is a world first. It can automatically record your weight, lean and fat mass, and your Body Mass Index, and it'll upload it to a secure website or an iPhone application.

It's less than an inch thick and made of glass and steel. It uses bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) to calculate your body fat composition, which the company says allows for more accurate tracking than other options.

The system can cope with up to 8 different users, and will recognise them when they step on the scale. It can cope with a max weight of 396lbs and is powered by four AAA batteries. The iPhone app allows you to track and browse your stats at any time.

The Wi-Fi Body Scale is currently only available in the States and costs $160. We'll let you know when it makes its way over to the UK.

It's not quite as swanky as the Pizza Hut iPhone app in the US, or even as easy as Domino's pizza by text service, but Papa John's has announced a version of its site optimised for mobile phones.

With around 10% of online orders coming from mobile phones - despite this being via the full-fat site - Papa John's has now caught up and those visiting www.papajohns.co.uk from a mobile will automatically go to the simplified site.

Mobile phone users will be able to access full menus, pizza customisation and repeat orders, while the nearest store will automatically be suggested.

"This makes the mobile ordering site ideal for people who are in locations where it is hard to talk or they would prefer not to speak on the phone, whether it's on the way home on a bus or train, or in the pub", says Papa John's.

 Complete overhaul of the interface

Truphone has announced that its popular Android app is getting an upgrade, to version 2.0. The application will be benefiting from a completely new user interface, better account management and it'll also now run natively - meaning it'll run faster.

Truphone, in case you're unfamiliar, allows you to make international calls for the price of a local call - which for most people is free. The call hits a local Truphone gateway, and is then transmitted over the Truphone network.

You can also call people on Skype, on Google Talk, and use IM on the aforementioned services, as well as allowing you access to your contacts on MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, AIM and Twitter.

Karl Good, Director of Consumer Apps for Truphone, told Pocket-lint: "The improvements to the Android application come from customer feedback and lessons learned from our first application to provide a slicker and faster user experience. This new Android application builds on our heritage of being a pioneer in the mobile industry, providing high quality voice services and making Truphone the smart choice for people with an international lifestyle".

If you've got an international lifestyle, then you can download the app from either the Truphone website or the Android market. You can also get Truphone apps for iPhone, BlackBerry and Nokia handsets.

 Order your Nokia handset around

Vlingo has created a mobile app that will let you speak to your Nokia handset. The company behind it claims that you can say whatever you want into your handset and the phone will respond and perform, implying that there's semantic technology in there, too.

The technology works on the N95, N95 8GB, E51, E71, E75, 5530 XpressMusic, and 5800 XpressMusic, and can be used to send texts, emails, search the web, or check Facebook. It has the capability to learn an individual's voice, too, and pick it out of a loud room.

To configure the app, you can select your language and accent in the Vlingo settings menu, and the company recommends that you speak realistic phrases into the handset, as the recongition is tuned to certain tasks.

In our brief testing, it coped with a fairly regular British accent well. We had to speak slowly and carefully for it to understand us, but it worked out relatively lengthy sentences like "google chinese takeaways in finsbury park" without too much trouble.

The free version's only limit is that you can only send five messages a day, so if you're a Nokia user you might want to check it out. Also, if you're lucky enough to have a strong accent, we'd love to hear how it copes. Let us know in the comments.

 Dial-in music identification service available

Shazam has announced that it has done a new deal with a mobile phone operator and teamed up with O2 to offer its music discovery service to O2 customers.

The agreement means that anyone on O2 can use the Shazam service by dialing 2580 on their mobile and holding it up to the music they want to know more about for a few seconds.

The Shazam service will then text the user back with the details about the track, and O2 customers will get a link embedded in that text that will allow them to immediately buy the song.

As far as charges go, each time users call the Shazam music service standard call charges apply (O2 reckons around 12p per call) then each successful identification (or "tag") costs 50p. If the tune can't be recognised, there's no charge.

Shazam has previously launched for platforms - such as the iPhone, Android devices and RIM's BlackBerry smartphones. In 2008 it hit a milestone of identifying over 100 million tracks.
