Continues range of home cinema players

LaCie has extended its range of LaCinema products with the LaCinema Classic HD. Like the other products in the range, it's a multimedia hard disk player with full 1080p playback, DLNA functionality and "unsurpassed" format compatibility.

The idea is that you plug it into your telly and hi-fi and then use it as NAS file server, chucking all your multimedia content onto it. Once you want to view that content, however, you can access it from your directly-connected devices or stream to other DLNA devices on your home network.

It'll play everything from DivX format to high-quality MKV H.264, and supports HDMI 1.3, and Dolby Digital audio. It'll work as a media server to stream content to Xbox 360s and PS3s, too, though it won't work with the Wii just yet.

The device comes in capacities of up to 2GB and can connect via Ethernet or a (sold separately) 802.11n Wi-Fi adaptor. It costs ?200 and is available now.

 Designed by Philippe Starck

LaCie has announced a couple of hard disks that it's bringing to the UK which have been designed by French New Design pioneer Philippe Starck - the designer behind the Juicy Salif lemon juicer.

There's a desktop and a mobile version of the drive. Both have design from Starck, a thick aluminium casing, a touch sensitive surface for app launching, and software capable of scheduling automatic backups. Starck said of the design:

"Technological genius explodes exponentially, each time with incredible power whose limits are yet to be known. The power remains, never abating, symbolically characterised by the sculptural magma that one attempts to cleave, to master within this geometrically perfect strongbox".

He added: "A symbol of strength mastered, of freedom guided, of incandescent magma heeding to the form of its cast. The interpretation is free. But the mystery remains".

The desktop drives come in 1TB and 2TB capacities and the mobile ones have 320GB and 500GB options. Pricing starts at ?110 for the desktop version and ?85 for the mobile one. They're available now.
