Remember the iPhone worm that spread an all-singing, all-dancing Rick Astley across jailbroken handsets? Well, the creator of the Ikee worm, as it's called, has been offered a job as an iPhone application developer by a company called Mogeneration.

The Australian 21-year-old, Ashley Towns, revealed the news on his Twitter feed, saying: "yey, i got the job! i'm now an iPhone application developer!". Mogeneration have a number of apps, including Lingopal, Xumii and Moo Shake!

Despite infecting approximately 100 phones with his rickrolling virus and admitting the creation of the worm, Towns hasn't been contacted by the law authorities. His attack was relatively trivial but it did lay the foundation for another, more malicious, virus that targeted ING customers.

Shazam has announced it's going (PRODUCT)RED with a special charity edition app now available for the iPhone on the App Store.

Offering the same music discovery features as the premium Shazam Encore app, there's also new content related to (PRODUCT)RED.

For each app purchased, Shazam will give 20% of the price to the global fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in Africa.

The (SHAZAM)RED Special Edition App, to give it its official title, can be identified by its red-coloured product icon and is available for ?2.99, 3.99 euros or $4.99.

A mobile phone gaming company has delivered a blow to the Android platform - in PR terms at the very least - by unfavourably comparing it to Apple's rival offering and revealing it is to cut funding for its Android products.

A senior executive from the French company Gameloft is quoted by Reuters whilst at an investor conference as revealing Gameloft sells 400 times more games on iPhone than it does on Android.

"We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like ... many others", Gameloft finance director Alexandre de Rochefort said, suggesting other games companies were seeing similar results.

"It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue".

There's also info on how to get the most out of your UE earphones and the ability to watch artists interviews, backstage footage, and photos from live shows.

Rating the locations - which could vary from coffee shop chains to greasy spoons to official pay-for-a-desk type work locations - on power provision, atmosphere and noise levels, it should give an idea of what a place is all about and users can add their own reviews too.

Currently launching for the London metro area, WorkSnug will soon also be available for the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Berlin and Madrid with a website planned to launch in the future.

While we doubt Apple's voiceover guy will be highlighting this offering in any forthcoming advert ("you want your iPhone to blow? There's an app for that) the Blower - Real Air app appears to do just that.

By abusing the phone's speaker by producing low frequencies it appears that the app can create a tiny stream of air from the speaker - enough at least to blow out birthday candles - which is a pretty impressive trick, although not quite magic.

It's no Airblade, granted, but does go some way to show what a clever mind can come up with - even if the ultimate result falls somewhat flat in the land of pointless.

A startup called RidRx has created an adaptor that'll allow you to mod an old stethoscope into a fully-functioning iPhone or iPod touch-enabled version of the heartbeat detector. It comes with a phone dock/holder and an app that will record and analyse the audio you capture.

It's called the iStethoscope Pro, and can't be sold for anything other than recreational use thanks to the US regulators. However, it could prove useful - if only for kids who want to prove an irregular heartbeat to their PE teachers so they're able to get out of rugby practice on a cold November morning.

The adaptor kit costs $30, but you'll need to provide your own stethoscope - which will likely set you back the best part of $100 too, unless you know a friendly Doctor. The app itself costs 99 cents and is available now on the iPhone App Store.

Just over a year after the application's launch, Google has announced an update for Google Earth for the iPhone and iPod touch.

With the original at one point the second most-downloaded free application overall, it's an update that will likely be downloaded by a fair few users.

Version 2.0 of Google Earth for iPhone adds the ability to view maps created or saved on a desktop computer on an iPhone via the MyMaps settings, improved icon selection and performance and the availability of the app in new languages.

The app will be rolling out around the world over the next day or so, available to download for free from the iTunes App Store.

Magellan has joined the iPhone navigation party with the news it is to launch not just the RoadMate GPS application, but like TomTom and Navigon before it, a tailor-made car kit.

Magellan's offering is more of a rival to TomTom's system as it too claims to offer enhanced signal with a built-in GPS receiver, noise-cancelling speakerphone functionality, boasts in-car charging and can rotate for landscape and portrait use.

As far as the software goes, the Magellan offering looks fairly comprehensive with the navigation offering spoke street names, lane assist, 3D landmarks and address book integration.

Extras include in-app music control from the get-go, find your car functionality, a pedestrian mode and a "OneTouch" favourites menu.

Touch owners should note that when combined with the car kit - and its built-in GPS receiver - the set-up can turn the iPod into a navigation device too.

The app is available in the States now for $79.99, while pricing for the car kit (due late 2009) is $129.99, UK/Europe details are TBC.

iPhone owning Star Wars fans hoping to relive the final battle scene of Star Wars, where you get a chance to take down the Death Star as if you were shooting Womp rats on Tatooine, can now do so following the launch of a new game for the iPhone.

Star Wars: Trench Run puts you in the cockpit of a Rebel X-Wing as you take on the Galactic Empire and is controlled by moving your iPhone forwards and backwards and side to side (thanks to the accelerometer).

The games developers, THQ, have said that the game adds special graphical features for the iPod touch second-generation, iPhone 3GS and other future devices meaning users will get a better graphics experience where possible.

The game is available to download from the App Store and costs $4.99 in the US and ?2.99 in the UK.?

Said to be "specially made for the phone" Domino's iPhone option is accessed online from www.dominos.co.uk or www.dominos.ie and offers all of the features of the main site, but "optimised into a bite sized form".

The "app", created by Vexed, went live on 13 November and is said to have already seen "thousands of orders" from mobile pizza fans across the UK and Ireland.? ?

Sales and marketing director for Domino's in the UK and Ireland, Robin Auld, said: "The translation of our site onto the iPhone has already proved popular with our customers".

Despite it being only November, ITN has launched a new channel on YouTube that offers purely Christmas programming.

With over 200 programmes based around the Christmas season, the content on "The Christmas Channel" ranges from toys to turkey via Pantomimes.

Thanks to a team up with Jerusalem Productions there are also shows on offer about the "real meaning" of Christmas such as "Xmas Files" and "A Small Miracle".

The Christmas Channel is also available to download as an iPhone application - but we do hope you wait until at least the start of December.

It's not the first time that Clarkson & Co. have whipped out their iPhones, but last night the Top Gear team used the Apple handset twice over in their feature on the grand tourer super cars.

The first tech trial for the three TV motor journos was to pair their mobiles with their in-car stereos. Mercifully, the iPhone plugged that particular spec gap nearly 2 years ago now but, sadly, Richard Hammond's Ferrari voice activation seemed to have a mind of its own - just in case that's the kind of thing that might put you off buying a Ferrari California. While you're at it, you might want to check that the pattern of the tyre treads is pretty enough for you too.

Satnavs

The next tech test for the cars was with their in-built satnav's. Both the Ferrari's system and the Aston Martin's seemed to work just fine despite Clarkson's initial concern with the Volvo model featured in the latter of the two vehicles. However, there were some issues with the Audi-built unit in James May's Lamborghini which didn't seem to recognise the existence of Romania whatsoever. Another thing to look out for if you're in that small subset of people who both own one of these luxury vehicles and also happens to be holidaying in Bucharest too.

Decibel iPhone app

The star of the show though, and the one you'll only need 59p/99c to road test, is the sound measuring app called, simply enough, Decibel. Currently in version 1.2, the 0.2MB app measures noise levels through the iPhone microphone and displays the readings both as a digital counter and an analogue needle. The three separate figures show the current decibel count, the maximum reading since recording began and the peak which is more of a current indicator of the maximum.

It is available for both the iPod touch and the iPhone, but beware that the touch has no built-in microphone, so you'll need a headset of some sort to get a reading with it. Another thing to look out for is that the iPhone mic clips at 100-105 decibels, meaning you're not going to be able to measure any sounds above a loud shout, so you can forget about trying it out at gigs.

That said, one use apart from measuring the sound of a super car's engine in an ex-Romanian dictator's secret network of underground road tunnels, might be if you happen to be complaining to your local council or constabulary about some noisy neighbours. They'll often ask for a measurement and it'll save the tedium of them having to send round a team to record it, by which time next door's banging might well have stopped. Perhaps not the cheeriest of uses but a use nonetheless.

Since its release, Decibel has been one of the top paid apps across Europe and doubtless Tomas Matuschek, the Swedish software architect behind the product, will be rather happy to note a slightly bigger cheque from Apple this month. Offering over ten "spells" the app can be practised alone before would-be wizards can "duel" opponents.

The free update, which TomTom says is being submitted to Apple - almost as we type - for its approval, claims to bring "significant and advanced additional features".

An iPhone application that costs ?600 is proving surprisingly popular, according to its makers. The iVIP Black application offers more than the "I Am Rich" app (which was withdrawn from the App Store by Apple) - it gives access to an "exclusive network".

That network includes privileges and benefits across a range of luxury partners including private islands, a concierge, supercar club, private jets, theatres, members’ clubs, butlers, and various other options. It's not just there to display on your homescreen to display how wealthy you are, though of course it does that too.

Users who download the app are required to fill out a "High Net Worth Individual certification", so only "millionaires" are permitted to use it. However, the price does include a consultation where your personal copy of iVIP is customised to suit your needs. "There is no privilege, experience or desire that cannot be incorporated", says the company.

If you don't want to splash out six hundred squid, there's the option of iVIP Blue for ?280, which doesn't give you the consultation, but does offer the same access to the services listed above. And if you don't want to spend anywhere near that amount, then there'll soon be iVIP Red - a preview app that has full functionality but no access to the iVIP network.

And support is the correct word, as the Navigon iPhone Car Mount, unlike the more expensive TomTom effort, is just a plastic cradle with no extra GPS receiver or built-in speaker.

This is perhaps why the Navigon iPhone Car Mount has an RRP of ?39.95, while the TomTom effort comes in at just under ?100.

Meanwhile Navigon has started to charge for software upgrades in the UK, with the latest allowing users to type a full 7-digit UK postcode straight into their iPhone as opposed to just the road name and number.

A new iPhone app has been launched as an "entertainment first", letting iPhone owners use their iPhone to create a "personalised, social and interactive entertainment experience" while watching "Night at the Museum 2" on DVD or Blu-ray.

The app, from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Spot411 "listens" and syncs in seconds to an exact moment in a movie, using real-time audio recognition technology.

As events pass in the timeline of the film, facts and trivia automatically pop up on the iPhone (or computer), such as info about an actor, the location at that moment, or song on the soundtrack.

There's also the ability for fans to share and chat with friends while watching a film via the likes of Facebook and Twitter. ?

The app is available for free to download now and currently just works with "Night at the Museum 2", but there are said to "several" FoxPop releases planned for 2010.

An iPhone application is in development by Australian and American doctors which analyses the sound of your coughs to provide a diagnosis of a cold, flu, pneumonia or any other respiratory disease that might be assailing you.

Different ailments have different effects on the lungs - coughs can be dry or wet, or "productive" or "non-productive", as Doctors put it - referring to mucus production. The software aims to save doctors time by reassuring non-serious but hypochondriac patients that they'll be fine but telling more urgent cases to "get thee to an A&E".

Healthy coughs are louder than ill coughs, and vibrating vocal chords and the aforementioned presence of mucus can indicate other symptoms worth investigating. In a similar way to how Shazam identifies music tracks, the app compares your cough to a database of both ill and healthy people of both sexes and various ages, weights and other variables.

The team behind it - STAR Analytical Services - reckons they'll need about 1000 patients in the database before the app can be reliable, and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is run by the former Microsoft CEO, has given the team a $100,000 grant to pursue the research further.

Whooping cough? There's an app for that.

Shazam has announced the launch of the previously promised "premium" version of its iPhone app called Shazam Encore.

A paid-for download, as opposed to the previous free offering, Shazam is promising new functionality including improved speed performance.

There's also now music recommendations that suggests songs similar to the track the user has tagged for identification, lists of what's popular, the ability to search music and a "car mode" said to "make it simple to discover what’s playing on the radio even when driving".

Shazam will continue to offer the free Shazam app on the App Store but new users will now be limited to identifying five tracks per month. ?

Those who've previously downloaded the free app "will get all of these great features they've come to expect from Shazam without any limitations", as well as new Facebook integration says the company. ?

The Shazam Encore app is available for ?2.99, 3.99 euros or $4.99 now.

The CoPilot Live navigation application for the iPhone has received yet another update.

This third update, in as many months, claims to bring a number of improvements, including enhanced GPS performance. The update also allows for iPod controls within the CoPilot Live application.?

Incidentally, the CoPilot app holds the number one position in the iTunes Top Grossing Apps chart, meaning that it has generated more revenue than any other app sold via the Apple App Store here in the UK.

The updated CoPilot Live app is available to buy now from the App Store for a one-off fee of ?25.99, while existing customers can download the update for free.

Apple has now officially announced that the App Store has hit the 100,000 available apps milestone.

Apple iPhone and iPod touch customers across 77 countries have downloaded well over 2 billion apps, making the App Store not only the largest, but the world's most popular.

Orange has announced that its first UK exclusive app, Orange Wednesdays, is now available on the App Store.

The new app from the operator - which is due to offer the iPhone from 10 November in the UK? -? brings the Orange Wednesdays cinema experience to the iPhone and iPod touch.

The app offers film reviews and trailers with info on what's on, where films are showing, information on how to get there and the ability to redeem the 2 for 1 Orange Wednesdays cinema voucher on the Orange iPhone.

Kodak has introduced the Pic Flick App, a new, free iPhone and iPod touch app that lets users upload pictures to a Kodak W1020 wireless digital frame or print them wirelessly on the Kodak ESP 5250 all-in-one Wi-Fi-enabled printer.

"The Kodak Pic Flick App provides a fast, easy and fun way to print, display and share within seconds of capturing a moment at home or away from home", said Randy Brody, vice-president of marketing inkjet systems, Eastman Kodak Company. ?

The BBC has announced it has made a deal with Stitcher.com to make its BBC World Service content available to users of the mobile phone-based application across the globe.

As many of you will know, Stitcher is a free mobile phone "Smart Radio" app, available on a number of handsets, including the iPhone, the Palm Pre and BlackBerrys.

The BBC World Service programming joins a wide range of audio content available including news, sport, talk and entertainment which is streamed on-demand.

BBC World Service will "provide a selection of English language podcasts, with programming such as Global News, Digital Planet, Global Arts & Entertainment and Africa Today", says the corporation.

Settlers of Catan is a board game that was once memorably described as "perfect". It's based on a tropical island that you and up to three other players have landed on and are exploring. The objective is to accrue 10 victory points by capturing settlements and building roads.

The game is now available on the iPhone. It lets players compete against other humans or an AI, though there's no wireless multiplayer, so you'll have to pass the phone around to allow multiple players to take part. It lets you follow the exact rule set of the original game.

You can adjust the amount of victory points required to win, as well as launch a "friendly" robber mode. It also includes a bunch of beginners' tutorials for those who aren't terribly familiar with the game.

It costs ?3, or $5 in the States, and it's available now in the App Store.

Eyemags has announced that it's launching new functionality that'll allow users to "install" its pages onto their iPhones and iPod touches. The app will let users save pages from the Eyemags mobile website onto their homescreens, like they were applications, and then access that content even when offline.

Those applications can be built by a web developer and can include HTML5 standards. Eyemags is saying that this allows developers to bypass Apple's lengthy approvals process if they're just building simple applications, billing it as "the peoples' app store".

It's free to create apps at the time of writing, but from 16 November a charge will be levied on publishers. A larger charge can also be applied if you want your app to be built into a more traditional "native" iPhone application. Electric Pocket’s new MailTones iPhone app offers the ability to set a different email alert for each friend, family member or colleague in their address book.

In the words of the developer: "MailTones helps to distinguish high priority emails your boss or partner from lower priority emails from friends or group email lists".

The app comes with a collection of 25 tones ranging from discrete bells to horns and buzzers and can be set for a specific contact or one for all incoming emails from a particular domain - making it easy to recognise incoming emails from work colleagues or customers.

Additionally, it can also filter and provide custom tones for messages which include specific words in the subject line.

iPhone location games like Foursquare and Gowalla have one big drawback - you can't run them in the background. To "check in" at a location, you have to pull your phone out, connect to the Web, and then let the app do its thing.

But a new entrant to the space, Stalqer, has managed to sneakily hack the iPhone's email systems so that it can record you and your friends' locations in the background. The iPhone doesn't allow third-party apps to run in the background, so it's quite a feat that Stalqer has managed.

Here's how it works. The app sets up a secret email account on your device, and then monitors the iPhone's autocheck function. When it looks for new messages, the service inspects the POP or IMAP handshake, and particularly the IP address. That happens, apparently, every 15 minutes or so and the app then gets a location point.

There's also the option to check in manually on a Google map, and see your friends' locations. You can tie in your Facebook account, too, so that you can see where any friends who are also running the app are. Quite smartly, Stalqer can also show the location of friends who aren't signed up, grabbing public information off their profile like "City".

As you can imagine, the app comes with a plethora of privacy settings that give you fine-grained control over exactly who gets to see your location and when. Stalqer isn't monetized just yet - the company wants to see if people will go for it. It's not quite available yet, but has been submitted to Apple and you can sign up for an email when it's available.

Google has unveiled a new version of the Gmail web interface for the iPhone and Android handsets. The last edition was released back in April, but since then the company has made a whole host of improvements, making the mobile version nearly as feature-complete as its desktop equivalent.

Google says: "Over the last six months, we've added a lot: mute, label management, keyboard shortcuts, smart links, an outbox, and the ability to move messages (label and archive in one step)".

"Some new features, like swipe-to-archive and auto-expanding compose boxes, take advantage of these mobile phones' unique properties. We also made address auto-complete faster, enhanced refresh capabilities, and sped up loading so Gmail for mobile starts in under three seconds on newer smartphones".

To get the update, you'll need to go to Gmail.com in your mobile browser, and when we tested it on an HTC Hero we had to download and install a small amount of data, presumably to enable the speed enhancements and offline support.

Unfortunately it doesn't hook into the notifications section of Android devices - they take you to the platform's default, but limited, Gmail app instead. We'd expect improvements to the default Gmail app in future Android builds, like Donut and Eclair.

David Hasselhoff has launched an iPhone app that "promises to answer all of life's questions".

"Ask The Hoff", now available in the iTunes App Store for a not extortionate 59p (or 99 cents), works on the premise that the Hoff's brain has been uploaded to the phone.

After the user asks a question and shakes the phone, an animated version of the Hoff replies with one of a number of pre-recorded responses, voiced by Hasselhoff himself.

"I know there are moments when everyone faces major decisions in life and needs advice from an expert", says Hasselhoff.

"As the proud owner of not one but two iPhones (I like to be able to make two phone calls at once!), I'm very pleased to announce the launch of my very own iPhone app".

NASA has put together an iPhone application that'll let budding space-heads keep track of intersteller goings-on from their mobile phones. The app, which was released on 23 Oct, is called "NASA App For iPhone".

It allows users to view images about space, get information about specific missions and view videos and Twitter feeds. There's a few other features too - you can view exactly where the International Space Station - or other satellites - are at any given time, and view NASA's image of the day and astronomy image of the day.?

The objective, of course, is to increase public interest in space again. NASA has had a hard time since the 60s in keeping in the public eye, and has struggled with funding for that reason. An iPhone app won't turn its fortunes around single-handedly, but should hopefully keep people focused on the skies, even if it's via their iPhone screens.

Kizoom and online rail ticket retailer, thetrainline.com, has launched a new UK train journey planning iPhone app with the added bonus being that it is free, unlike the National Rail option that'll cost you a fiver.?

Covering the entire UK rail network, thetrainline.com app is said to be easy to use and offers a start-to-finish route planning feature, using station search by name or on a map showing the user's location and nearest rail stations.

The "Next Train Home" function gives users stations and departure times from their current location anywhere in the UK to their stored home destination, while there's also up-to-date Tube information, that can be saved for offline access.

There's also some Twitter integration with the option to tweet other passengers about their journeys. Thetrainline.com explains it thusly: "It brings travellers together in sharing thoughts or sharing taxis! This quirky - and likely popular - function has a pre-loaded # tag specific to the users' trains, so it's simple to engage other passengers and spice-up the long trek home!"

The days of the mobile phone being just a device for making emergency calls are far behind us, but while most of us have handsets that can at least play music or download our email on the go, the biggest fear now facing mobile phone operators and carriers around the world is the ability to use the mobile Internet connection that we all feel is our right, to stream live television over the network.

They say you wait forever and then two buses come at once. And that's exactly what happened for the iPhone in the last seven days. Not one live streaming TV service, but two were launched. The result is that O2 in the UK has had to issue a warning over the?TVCatchup iPhone site, one of the services that if users use too much, means they could be cut off.

Meanwhile AT&T in the US had to move in to get a new app by TV tuner maker?Elgato?that allowed users to stream television from a TV tuner plugged into their Mac directly to their iPhone over the 3G network, changed.

While Apple has the power to force a change in the app, something they have?done, and O2 to block the streaming service, something they are threatening, other handset platforms, which are more open, like Android or Symbian, don't have as operator friendly approach and that's before you even start to address jailbroken apps that allow offerings like SlingPlayer Mobile to work on the 3G network.?

The problem of course isn't about you watching television, although it does raise questions about TV licensing laws in the UK, but about the strain on the network.

Strangely operators like O2 and AT&T are already struggling under the strain of supplying data requests to all it's smartphone users. Add in a constant stream of large amounts of data, i.e., from a popular streaming TV service, and I wouldn't be surprised if the networks around the globe buckle massively under the strain.

Forget the previous concerns of the operators in losing revenue over VoIP calls, thanks to services like Skype and Google Voice, think about the cost of managing a network that is now about data, rather than calls without the ability to charge SMS prices.

So what's the solution? In the short term I wouldn't be surprised if mobile operators moved to either ban them outright or move to create a tiered data system aimed at those who want to consume the larger data content over those that don't.

We might have moved into an "all you can eat" pricing model at the moment in the form of "unlimited" packages, but that is no longer beneficial for the operators for the admittedly minority users who are heavy consumers of data.

While I would love to believe that heavy data users will be able to continue as is, I just can't see that happening. A tiered system based on speed or data consumption would benefit virtually everyone just as it does in the fixed (landline) broadband market. Those who need to stream movies or games can do so with a service that fits their needs, and more importantly have the right to complain if it doesn't. Those who just need email or basic websurfing can do that too.

Whatever the handset or the app one thing is certain - the headache facing operators on how to manage the network, and therefore our expectations of it are only going to get worse.

In our first-look review of Google Wave, we argued that - like Twitter - Wave needs applictions for it to be truly useful. The first of those desktop applications has arrived - albeit in a very limited state and only for Mac users.

Waveboard is currently in version 0.4, and is being called "simple and practical" by users who've tested it. All it does is put the web interface in its own Window, as if it was in your browser. It also puts out notifications when things happen via its dock symbol, menu entry and a growl notification. Not much for now, but still better than the web interface.

The same developer also has an iPhone version, which is featured in the brief video above. That's not quite out yet, but it's been submitted to the App Store for approval. When it's up and ready for download, we'll be sure to let you know.

Pricey, as far as apps go, the software will cost customers $49 to download from the App Store, but looks to offer some fairly advanced funtionality.

"Drawing on 20+ years of development, 50,000+ built-in algorithms, and 10+ trillion pieces of continually updated and curated data, the Wolfram Alpha app is the ultimate replacement for almost any kind of calculator or reference book - and much more", says Wolfram Alpha.

The Wolfram Alpha team promises "expert-level answers to your specific freeform questions - complete with stunning, dynamically generated visualizations and tables, and richer and deeper information than you imagined possible".

Presumably those that don't want to pay can continue to use the iPhone-optimised version of the site for free.

Computational knowledge engine Wolfram Alpha has announced the launch of the Wolfram Alpha Webservice API.

The paid-for release will mean that developers can now stick Wolfram Alpha results and data into websites and online publishing, desktop applications, on mobiles and in cloud computing applications.

Wolfram Alpha says such uses may include "researching cancer through computational biology, augmenting web and meta-web search with computed knowledge, enriching online journalism with interactive content, building artificial intelligence systems on our domain expertise, leveraging our data analysis for decision support, optimizing renewable-energy efficiency, and even determining the optimal temperature for draft beer based on the current weather conditions".

Developers can register now for an API account at a dedicated site, while the API is said to be the basis for a forthcoming Wolfram Alpha iPhone app - we will keep you posted.

With "In App Purchase" said to be being "rapidly adopted" by iPhone developers, Apple has announced that such functionality will now be available to be built into free apps, rather than just paid-for.

This will mean that free iPhone and iPod touch applications will soon see content, subscriptions and digital services offered on paid-for basis within the initial free app.

As well as addressing potential piracy issues with verification, Apple says, in a recent email sent out to registered iPhone developers:

"You can also simplify your development by creating a single version of your app that uses In App Purchase to unlock additional functionality, eliminating the need to create Lite versions of your app".

Commentators suggest this development might mean an explosion of try-before-you-buy action on the App Store, with apps free to download, but requiring payment after a set time, or in order to access full content.

"20 Minute Meals" offers "50 delicious new recipes, gorgeous step-by-step photography throughout and 21 exclusive Jamie Oliver videos with cooking tips, hints and techniques".

There's "world-firsts", including voice-prompts from the Oliver, an interactive shopping list sorted by supermarket aisle, and the ability to suggest a random recipe with a quick shake of the phone.

Shazam, the music discovery service, has revealed that more than 50 million people around the world have now used the Shazam service.

This is an increase of 15 million users since February of this year, while Shazam is now available, across various platforms in over 150 countries.

The Shazam iPhone app has been downloaded more than 10 million times via the App Store. It's also racked up some high-up rankings on BlackBerry App World, Nokia's Ovi Store and the Android Market.

As well as the milestone, Shazam is also celebrating KPCB investment from the iFund that will see the app developed for more mobile platforms and in multiple languages.

A new system in the States from Californian company Viper will see iPhones used as remote controls for cars, as the Viper SmartStart can unlock your car, start your car, lock your car, open the boot, heat your car or cool it, all remotely, all via an iPhone app.

The Bond-esque system works on any car with electric windows and locks and works via a receiver that is installed in the car. It's due to go on sale at Best Buy stores for around $500 while the app is available via the App Store.

Ocean Observations has worked up a concept interface for the iPhone that takes elements of the Palm Pre's functionality, combines it with Apple's Cover Flow, and makes up their idea of what multi-tasking on the iPhone could look like.

"Our idea is to present the running apps together with the rest of your app icons on the home screen, instead of hiding them behind some long pressing unrelated key", says the team behind the concept.

"All running apps have a miniature representation in a cover flow at the bottom of the screen. To make room for this, each home screen page will have one less row of icons and the dock is removed completely. But since the running apps will often equal your favourites, they will still be easily accessible".

In an attempt to make salt content counting sexy, the Food Standards Agency has released "FSA Salt", a free app for the iPhone or iPod touch.

The app is designed to "help consumers plan, calculate and monitor their daily salt consumption when shopping and on the go".

As well as for owners of Apple's products, the salt calculator app is also accessible by other web-enabled mobiles at www.food.gov.uk/saltapp.

By entering the level of salt per 100 grams as stated on the food item's label, via a traffic light system, the app will tell users instantly if it's a healthy, low salt option or "something to be enjoyed only every once in a while". ?

There is also information on salt intake for children and iPhone and iPod touch users can shake the phone for tips on how to reduce their salt level.

TomTom has said that it plans to bring a number of new features to its TomTom for iPhone app in the near future as free upgrades to those who have already paid for the app.

Although the iPhone app already comes with IQ Routes, Advanced Lane Guidance and an updated safety camera database, other features will be added.

"I can confirm that these upgrades will feature Advanced Lane Guidance and an updated safety camera database amongst other features…", a spokeswomen for the company told Pocket-lint.

Adobe is the latest company to launch an iPhone app, according to an announcement on Friday.

The free app, currently only available in US and Canadian iTunes stores, will allow users to edit their photos, apply effect and share images from their phone via the company's Photoshop.com offering.

“Now, with access to powerful editing and sharing tools, iPhone users are armed with the resources to document all of life’s unexpected moments, make them look their best and then re-live those memories with friends and family", said the company in a statement.

Using your finger, would be digital artists will be able to touch up, crop, rotate and flip their photos as well as adjust colour, saturation, tint, exposure and vibrancy, and convert them to black and white.

The app also offers a Sketch tool that promises to help photos look like drawings, and Soft Focus can give photos a subtle blur for artistic effect say Adobe.

Hoping to take on services like Flickr, which has a high iPhone user base, Adobe has given the app the ability to view images stored on Photoshop.com, which currently comes with 2GB of free storage.

As for a global roll out? Adobe told Pocket-lint that it was unable to comment on whether the Photoshop for iPhone app would be coming to the UK or other iTunes stores around the world.

Warner Bros is offering an iPhone app to celebrate the release of the forthcoming film of the beloved children's book, "Where The Wild Things Are".

The film - from Spike Jonze and with collaboration from the book's author Maurice Sendak - hits the big screen this month.

The iPhone app includes pics from the movies that can be set as wallpaper, trailers and clips from the film, some of the movie's soundtrack and official movie posters.

So far so standard, but there's also the opportunity to interact with one of the wild things, Carol, where you can have a mud fight, get him to dance to your music and see him eat up your photos and contacts, the last of which has got to delight any kid.

A new iPhone app available on the Apple App Store offers training on the go - using the iPhone as part of the programme.

"REPS: Mobile Trainer is the easy way to burn calories or tone muscles by using your iPhone or iPod like a free weight. Simply curl your iPhone up and down like you would a weight and watch the calories drop in real time", reads the blurb for the new app.

As well as the concept of using the 135 gram iPhone as a free weight, the app brings a real-time rep counter, calorie counter and weight loss targets, while music from the iDevice can be played at the same time as training. There's also "motivational audio messages" from a personal trainer.

AT&T has confirmed that it will enable VoIP applications like Sykpe, and Vonage on the iPhone to run on its 3G network on Tuesday.

The news opens the floodgates for more services such as Google's Voice application and other third party apps, and follows a FCC investigation currently still proceeding over Apple's decision to decline approval for Google's iPhone Voice application.

"In late summer, AT&T said it was taking a fresh look at VoIP capabilities on iPhone for use on AT&T’s 3G network, consistent with its regular review of device features and capabilities to ensure attractive options for consumers", the company says in a statement, before stating that "today’s decision was made after evaluating our customers’ expectations and use of the device compared to dozens of others we offer".

"We applaud today's announcement by AT&T to open up its 3G network to Internet calling applications such as Skype. It is the right step for AT&T, Apple, millions of mobile Skypers and the Internet itself", Josh Silverman, president of Skype said.

Throwing the ball back into Apple's court, a spokesman for Skype told Pocket-lint that it is waiting "for Apple to update their SDK rules, which they've said they'll be doing shortly", before being able to release an update with 3G capabilities for iPhone users.

The creators of an iPhone calculator application have installed a profanity filter in fear of falling foul of Apple's stringent App Store policies. The company behind PCalc won't let you use your calculator to spell out rude words.

If you're confused, think back to your school days - typing in 5318008 and then turning the calculator upside down and having a bit of a giggle, then trying to explain what's going on to an angry teacher who knows exactly what's going on.

Apple is very strict about 17+ content on its app store. App developers are often fearful of their apps getting rejected for even a hint of "inappropriate" content. The profanity filter is active in both the paid-for PCalc app and the free PCalc Lite application.

French company Withings has announced the launch of its Wi-Fi enabled body scale, which it claims is a world first. It can automatically record your weight, lean and fat mass, and your Body Mass Index, and it'll upload it to a secure website or an iPhone application.

It's less than an inch thick and made of glass and steel. It uses bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) to calculate your body fat composition, which the company says allows for more accurate tracking than other options.

The system can cope with up to 8 different users, and will recognise them when they step on the scale. It can cope with a max weight of 396lbs and is powered by four AAA batteries. The iPhone app allows you to track and browse your stats at any time.

The Wi-Fi Body Scale is currently only available in the States and costs $160. We'll let you know when it makes its way over to the UK.

iPhone owners will be able to watch an season of live football matches for a one-off fee of less than a fiver.

The deal is thanks to a new app from Channel Five, that has the broadcast rights to the UEFA Europa League, formerly the UEFA Cup.

The app will let UK iPhone and iPod touch owners watch all of Five's Thursday night matches as well as highlights from each round.

Quite literally kicking off with a match between Celtic and Rapid Vienna, the app will go on sale from the App Store for ?3.99.

"The app is attractively priced and means never having to miss a minute of live action when you're on the move", said Jonathan Lewis, the head of digital media at Five, to The Guardian.

Elgato has announced that its EyeTV application is now available on the iTunes App Store. The app allows users to watch live TV and recordings over the iPhone, as well as browse the program guide and start recordings remotely.

You'll need the EyeTV 3.2 software, and that only works on Macs, so PC users aren't allowed in. It'll automatically find a Mac on a local network using Bonjour, and can access it remotely via "My EyeTV", a locator utility that's now available - similar to Apple's "Back to my Mac" service.

When you're not on your local network, you can't watch live TV unless you find another Wi-Fi connection, but other than that everything should still work smoothly. It's available on the App Store right now, and will cost you ?3. You'll need to get an Elgato EyeTV tuner for your Mac, too, if you haven't got one yet.

Twitter client Tweetie 2 has been announced as coming soon - first for iPhone, then for Mac.

With an offline mode, the new iPhone version will get a drafts manager, Twitter contacts can be linked to contacts in the iPhone address book and it will offer threaded conversations too.

Other new features will include full landscape support, a redesigned compose screen and the ability to save searches.

Tweetie 2 for Mac will be a completely free upgrade but Tweetie 2 for iPhone will be "a whole new app" for OS 3.0 devices.

Following the necessary App Store approval it will be available to download for $2.99.

Spotify has submitted a revised version of its iPhone application to Apple which contains a few small updates. There's some bug fixes - Spotify says that the "general stability" of the app is improved - and there's also a couple of new features.

Firstly, the app will now pause when you take your headphones out - so if you accidentally jerk your buds out by mistake then you won't miss a second of music. Also, Spotify says the app will now work better on slower connections - useful if 3G coverage is a little patchy in your area.

It doesn't add the much-requested Last.fm scrobbling functionality, or the ability to see popularity of tracks or get access to the desktop version's radio function. Nor does it allow users to play music in the background - something that Apple has reserved for its own applications on the handset only.

As the app has only just been submitted, it should take a few weeks for it to appear on your handset, but sit tight - the company says " we wanted to let everyone know that it's on the way".

Apple has revealed that more than two billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store.

This follows on from the 1.5 billion mark hit in July this year, a year on from the App Store's launch.

Claiming the service is "the largest applications store in the world", there are now more than 85,000 apps available and over 125,000 developers in the iPhone Developer Program.

Those apps have been downloaded by Apple's more than 50 million iPhone and iPod touch customers worldwide.

"The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone", said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO.

"The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it".

Nokia has announced that it has acquired Dopplr, a privately-held mobile service provider for international travelers.

Dopplr - described as a "social atlas" - has a team of just seven people with offices in London and Helsinki. Dopplr is "thrilled" at the news.

In a statement Nokia says: "The Dopplr team brings to Nokia's Services unit unique know-how in creating internet-based communities and showing their journeys, experiences and tastes collectively on the web".

The acquisition will not affect the current Dopplr service, available at Dopplr.com, or where it is available via other platforms such as Flickr and Twitter as well as Nokia rival Apple's iPhone as an app.
