First three-dimensional movie to get "accessible" screenings

Disney has announced that it's going to be the first movie studio to release a 3D movie with subtitles. And not just flat subtitles either - the letters will be in full 3D too. The company claims that the technology to do this has only just become available.

The film that'll be getting the subtitles is "A Christmas Carol". It's taken ?9.5m at the UK box office, with 79% of those takings coming from 3D screens, however those screenings were previously inaccessible to the deaf and hard-of-hearing. That stands at odds with Disney's membership of the?UK film industry's Disability Working Group.

Disney Studio's technical executive director, Saul Mahoney, told Pocket-lint that the company has "worked with the UK film industry and charities representing people with hearing or sight loss, to ensure that the 3D cinema experience can be enjoyed by as many people as possible".

The subtitled screenings are starting from 29 November, and available in cinemas across the UK - you can check for your nearest one at accessible cinema site Your Local Cinema.

New scheme will see one-off cost to access a movie on multiple platforms

Disney is prepping an interesting solution that will redefine "ownership as access rights, not physical possession", reveals the Wall Street Journal.

The project, currently codenamed "Keychest", will offer cloud-based content that those who have paid to access it, across multiple platforms.

By paying a single price consumers would be granted permanent access to a movie or a TV show that they could chose to watch on-demand via a connected television, on a computer, or on the go on a similarly hooked up portable device, such as a mobile phone.

As well as addressing the modern consumer's need for flexible digital content, and falling DVD sales, the solution would mean that the content would not eat into the memory capacity of smaller portable devices, although consumers would have to be careful with data costs.

The WSJ reports: "The company has been quietly demonstrating Keychest for other movie studios and technology companies in a bid to get them to sign on".

Disney is said to be due to unveil the technology next month - we will keep you posted.

Asus has rolled out a couple of kiddie's netbooks, both complete with Disney branding. They're pretty similar to Asus' "Seashell" Eee PC, coming as they do with an 1.6GHz Atom Processor, Windows XP, 8.9-inch display and 1GB of memory.

There's no SSD option, only a 160GB hard disk, but it does have n-standard Wi-Fi, as well as b and g. There are 3 USB ports, a card reader, and plenty of parental controls and Disney software onboard.

The Disney netbook comes in either princess pink or magic blue and costs ?300. It's available now.
