10 million pairs of glasses across 500 stores

While here at Pocket-lint we had our very own 3D week a little way back, Channel 4's 3D week is fast approaching on 16 November and the broadcaster's promotional partner Sainsbury's is now in full swing distributing the required glasses.

The supermarket chain is going to be giving away 10 million pairs of 3D glasses for free to UK consumers so they can enjoy the full effects of Channel 4's ColorCode 3-D programming, thanks to the glasses' special amber and blue filters.?

The highlight of the week's coverage - for patriotic Brits anyway - will be previously unseen 3D footage of the Queen during her coronation year. In addition "Derren Brown's 3D Magic Spectacular" and - typical for Channel 4 - "The Greatest Ever 3D Moments" will also be shown.

The week will also include "several" 3D movies, details of which will be revealed soon - we will keep you posted.

?

 Regulator rejects the Beeb's proposals

The BBC has had its proposals to integrate ITV and Channel 4 content with its popular iPlayer denied by its regulator, the BBC Trust. The corporation wanted to allow its commercial rivals access to the platform to avoid criticism from those who say it has a dominant position in the market.

However, the BBC Trust said that it was "not convinced there was enough potential value to licence fee payers" for the move. The trust said it was too "complex" to be allowed, because it would mix ad-supported content with the BBC's own ad-free shows.

BBC execs are reportedly frustrated by the judgement, and have blamed a lack of understanding of the proposals. "We've been working on this for nearly a year and we don't think the idea of a single website for British television was complex", said one unnamed BBC staffer.

However the BBC's commercial rivals believe that the objective wasn't to simplify things for consumers, but to avoid a cut in the license fee from what could be a potentially hostile incoming Conservative government.

"Landmark" deal done for full-length shows

YouTube and Channel 4 have done a "landmark" deal that will see full-length versions of the broadcaster's top TV shows available online, on demand on the Google-owned site.

The agreement, 6 months in the making, is for a 3-year period and will mean programmes will go online "shortly after" shows have aired. ?

New shows available will include the likes of Skins, Hollyoaks and Peep Show and will be joined by 3000 hours of archive programming including Brass Eye, Derren Brown and Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.

Channel 4 will continue to offers its in-house 4oD catch-up service while the two companies will share ad revenue on the C4 content online at YouTube.

Channel 4's TV shows are due to be "fully available" via YouTube in early 2010, apparently the first time any broadcaster has used YouTube to offer a full-fat catch up service.
