A new Nintendo advert for the DSi handheld has been unveiled from Wallace & Gromit creator Aardman Animations.

Hit play now to see the ad, and yes, you'll be pleased to hear, there is a happy ending.

 Featuring a mohawk grenade

Activision Blizzard, the publishers of the ultra-successful World of Warcraft MMORPG, will be launching a series of TV ads for the game in Europe. A series in the US a while back featured William Shatner, Mr T, Verne Troyer, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Willy Toledo.

Only one of the European ones has appeared so far, featuring the man and mohawk that is Mr T. He confirms in the ad that Europe will be getting a "mohawk grenade" that players can throw at people to turn their heads into a night elf with a mohawk.

There's a second, similar commercial too, which scan's Mr T's head and hair, before declaring it perfect. Both should be showing on British TV screens from now - in time to convince parents to buy their kids a subscription for Christmas. At least we assume that's the idea...

What do you get if you combine Space Hoppers, Twitter, a south London warehouse and marketing for mobile phones? Sony Ericsson's #Pumpt campaign is what.

The phone co is flogging its Space Hopper theme almost to the death with a new stunt that presumes people want to watch a live video feed of said bouncy toys being pumped up in real time as people tweet a hashtagged phrase on the micro-blogging site.

The whole stunt is designed to promote Sony Ercisson's recently launched Satio and Aino handsets, although users of the former may prefer the company to concentrate its efforts on a firmware upgrade.

Hit play on the video above to have it explained to you by some affable SE bods and if you must, tweet #Pumpt to insert your personal puff of air into the campaign.

It appears as if Microsoft's advertising deal with Family Guy is back on again, after the software giant officially announced the plans and then changed its corporate mind deeming the grown-up cartoon not family friendly enough and opting for Warner Bros instead.

A selection of Windows 7 themed Family Guy clips have just showed up on Microsoft's official YouTube channel, but whether they are previews of what American viewers can expect to see soon, or the dumped ads filed for posterity, we don't know.

So far Apple has stayed out of the advertising spat between iPhone operator AT&T and rival network Verizon, but Apple's latest ads for its mobile makes a feature of the network in runs on - which can't be a coincidence considering the bashing Verizon has doled out of late, even sending the iPhone to the island of misfit toys.

While AT&T hit back with Luke Wilson, Apple has stepped in with two new iPhone ads that follow the format of previous versions, but ask "can your phone and your network do that?" after voice-over man demos the ability of the iPhone to handle data while on a voice call, the first time AT&T's service has been highlighted in Apple's campaign.

Hit play on the video above to see one of the new ads - which just aired on prime-time American television - and we'll keep you posted with more as we hear it.

American mobile phone operator AT&T has hit back at rival Verizon using the secret weapon of Luke Wilson.

The new ad, which supposedly compares the two operators' 3G offerings side by side, is a direct response to Verizon's current map-themed campaign which makes it appear as if AT&T has very little coverage across the United States.

AT&T was refused its initial legal request for an injunction to stop Verizon showing the adverts which AT&T deemed "misleading", so for now it seems a tit for tat battle will ensue until AT&T gets a second chance in court on 16 December.

INTERVIEW: How high it went, how it was done and who'd already done it before

With the creeping dawn of a new year comes both a new media campaign and ethos for the "leaders in innovation" Toshiba. Today sees the launch of the Space Chair advertisement in the UK - and soon in France and Germany - which will span TV, online and in-store media. We talked to the Toshiba UK marketing manager, Matt McDowell, to find out what a floating piece of ?2500 furniture has to do with selling AV and computer hardware.

"We wanted to deliver new TVs and new laptops but not in a every day rational way, in a dry unique and innovative fashion instead", begins McDowell, addressing the initial mild online confusion over the footage the world has seen of an armchair seemingly floating with dramatic images of the Earth disappearing beneath it.

"We came up with the idea more than a year ago after the Time Sculpture campaign [video of a 360 matrix-type scene filmed with 200 cameras] and we were thinking how on Earth do we follow that?" The answer seems to be by not trying to follow it on Earth at all, and the footage of the balsa wood seat dragged up to the edge of space up and over the Black Rock Desert in Nevada by a Helium filled weather balloon is indeed absolutely staggering.

"We captured the footage at dawn because it's not just about the chair. We wanted it to look beautiful and amazing too. We wanted to capture the sunrise over the mountains and the hue of the colours. It also happened to be very hot during the day, so we wanted to get it done early. It was 100F by the the time the chair landed".

Like the Time Sculpture before it, the Space Chair breaks a record of its own, with eight HD cameras used to capture the film, it makes it the highest high-def advert ever shot. Starting at 8ft in diameter, the balloon lifted the armchair over 82 minutes to a height of 98,268ft (18.6 miles) by which time the low pressure meant the balloon had increased to 24ft before finally shattering like glass, which you see at the end of the ad, allowing the broken seat and cameras to fall back to Earth.

The biodegradable chair was only a model, as constructed by Artem at the hefty price. It meant that the entire apparatus could be kept below 4lbs in weight, after which the Toshiba team would have needed permission from the Federal Aviation Administration. The eight cameras were used to have as many different lens types as possible covering the one take action and were themselves apparently not chosen by Toshiba.

"The Cameras aren't consumer ones. They're not Camilieos or anything. You can't buy them. They're used for things like CCTV and they had to withstand -90C, survive the descent and impact back on Earth, but it was also really the quality they had as well.? It wasn't us that chose them. JP Aerospace specced and requested them and these were the ones they happened to ask for. They happened to be ours".

Although elements of the stunt were original, the Space Chair is in fact virtually identical to a work by UK artist Simon Faithfull, as commissioned by the Arts Catalyst in 2004, called Escape Vehicle No.6 - a film which was recently shown at the BFI Southbank. Thankfully, the original artist was involved in the project second time around.

"Simon was absolutely part of the team. We were obviously inspired by what he had done", answered McDowell when questioned about the 2004 recording, but how does a company which prides itself on innovation align its slogan with a project that is clearly a near copy of something done 5 years ago?

"We weren't saying that the innovation was sending the balloon up. No one had done it in HD before and not as an advert before. We didn't use a music sound track or any celebrity voices. That's the innovation. The fact that we created it as an advert".

Whatever the reasons and what it may stand for, the fact remains that it's some superb looking footage. The ad runs on TV from today during the ITN news for for 3 weeks this side of Christmas and then takes a break until February when it starts again as part of the whole campaign across TV, online and in-store. If you can't wait, and why should you, then you can see it below.

So then, exactly what does the Space Chair have to do with the serious business of selling consumer tech?

"The meaning is armchair viewing redesigned. Most people watch TV and consume content through their chairs. It's a visual metaphor taking something ordinary to the extraordinary", and it does. It also makes you wish you were watching the stunning scenery on a better TV - be that Toshiba's or anyone else's. And with two consecutive adverts and two consecutive records broken, how is Toshiba going to top it for next time?

"The next one will be a little different. We're going to build on what we've already done. What's important is that it reflects all the work we've done internally. We've harmonised our approach from two years ago when we were a company that was product led and sometimes externally we could look very different between say our TVs and our laptops. The most significant statements we want to make, though, are that we're investing in our brand and harmonising our approach".

Good signs for Toshiba, and with the Blu-ray nightmare finally put to rest this year, perhaps now truly, the only way is up.

 Advertisers jumping for joy

Windows 7 may be about to get branded themes from advertisers, in an extension of the marketing options that Microsoft currently offers companies across its web properties.

Companies like Coca-Cola, Ducati, Infiniti, 20th Century Fox and Ferrari have appeared in screenshots, as well as the movie Avatar and the video game Gears of War. Microsoft has announced that it's begun to plan test pilots with those companies, with the results being known as the "Windows Theme Experience" and "Windows Personalization Gallery".

Brands will be able to stick their logos on IE8 add-ons, Windows 7 and Vista gadgets, Windows 7 backgrounds and borders, and "audio elements". However, before you get too upset, these will be opt-in for customers, who'll have to download the packs off an external site.

"These new themes are intended for the brand's most passionate fans and allows for a deeper engagement by letting consumers embed their favourite brand into their PC experience", says Microsoft.

The trial is due to take place in October 2010.

A further attempt at monetisation 2 years after overlays brought in

YouTube has begun a "small test" of a new kind of advertising on the site, in an attempt to finally meaningfully monetise the billion videos it serves on a daily basis.

While initial testing for pre-roll adverts on the world's most popular video site did not go well with "abandonment" rates said to be as high as 70%, the site is now going at it again with skippable pre-roll advertising.

"We are constantly working to find the right ads for the right content on YouTube, so as to create an experience that works for our users, partners, and advertisers", says YouTube in a blog post.

YouTube has tried various ways to make big money from advertising. InVideo "overlay" adverts have been live on the site since 2007, much to the disgust of many users when they were introduced, while last year YouTube began a click-to-buy scheme.

"We know what you're thinking", says YouTube, "Who would choose to watch an ad when they can skip it?"

The answer, it seems, might not inspire confidence: "Well, that's what we're trying to find out".

YouTube suggests short (say, 15 second) pre-rolls have seen success as have particularly creative efforts - the "quality and relevance" of an ad making users want to see it play out.

"Skippable pre-rolls [can] create a win-win-win for everyone on YouTube. For users, this format gives them more control over their experience. For advertisers, we're working toward a solution where they pay for ads that users actually watch and engage with".

What are your thoughts on pre-roll ads? Does a "your video will start in 10 seconds" message drive you mad? Have your say in the comments box below.

It seems Vodafone is not the only operator to get its claws out in a timely manner as Orange becomes the second operator to offer the iPhone in the UK, as 3 has revealed - on the day of the Orange iPhone launch - it has put in a formal complaint to the ASA about Orange's new advertising campaign.

While Orange and O2's price plans for the iPhone are very similar, it seems Orange is hoping to appeal to consumers on the strength of its 3G network with a new ?4 million "You're Covered" advertising campaign.

However, 3 is taking issue with Orange's claim that its 3G network "currently covers over 93% of the UK population - more than any other network", and has asked Ofcom to put measures in place for a more consistent way to of calculating coverage.

"We're confident that we have the biggest 3G network in the UK, both in terms of geographic and population coverage, built on a 9192 site network that grows by around 150 sites each week", says 3.

"But it's no surprise consumers are being confused about coverage. Right now each operator chooses a population coverage measurement that suits it. We currently claim 92% coverage. We could use a measure used elsewhere in the industry that would boost our claimed population coverage to 95% in an instant, without reaching a single extra customer".

"We're happy to open up our network to a third-party to judge. We"d like to see a common standard applied across the industry, to give consumers a more realistic picture of 3G coverage available to UK consumers on all networks".

Using the tilt-shift technique that makes real life shots look like they are actually a model village, videographer Keith Loutit's new work is a play on his previous tilt shift videos filmed in Sydney.

Called "Create Amazing", Loutit has built on his previous video shooting in Shanghai, New York, Santorini, London & Istanbul, with further set work in LA to give the video a more world view.

No word from HP as to when the adverts will be going live or when we can expect to see them.?

There goes the mobile advertising market

Google has announced it has signed an agreement to acquire AdMob, a mobile display advertising company based in California, in an attempt to cash in on the rapidly growing number of people who access the Internet as well as connected services and widgets on their phones.

In a blog post, the internet giant says: "AdMob is a great Silicon Valley story - founded in 2006 by Omar Hamoui when he couldn't find good ways to generate traffic for his mobile site. Over the past few years, Omar and his talented team have built a thriving company with great mobile advertising products, and we are looking forward to having them join the Google team and work with us on the future of mobile advertising".

Stating that "despite the tremendous growth in mobile usage and the substantial investment by many businesses in the space, the mobile web is still in its early stages", Google says it thinks that "great mobile advertising products can encourage even more growth in the mobile ecosystem".

Although Google currently offers mobile advertising solutions it says its focus to date has been on mobile versions of its search ads. This differs from AdMob's focus that has been mobile display ads and in-application ads, the potential of which for the Android platform will be lost on no-one.

In honour of the deal, Google has set-up a site that explains the $750 million acquisition and the types of mobile advertising available.

Aggressive advertising said to be misleading

It seems Verizon's "there's a map for that" AT&T bashing campaign has not gone down well with the latter's legal department.

AT&T is suing Verizon and has filed a motion to get the adverts pulled as it considers them "misleading".

As those who've seen the spots will know, the adverts compare Verizon's 3G coverage with AT&T's using red and blue splotches across a map of the States.

Verizon is a 3G network, so its coverage looks rather more impressive than AT&Ts, which covers a lot more of the States than is shown, but just not 3G.

"We believe the ads mislead consumers into believing that AT&T doesn't offer ANY wireless service in the vast majority of the country", says AT&T in the legal complaint.

The iPhone operator goes on to speculate: "Verizon's misleading advertising tactics appear to be a response to AT&T's strong leadership in smartphones".

We will keep you posted with developments.

Spotify, the streaming music service which has captured plenty of users in the year it's been around, has launched its first "reklam", or TV advert, albeit in Swedish. You can see it above.?

Many have suggested that despite doing well with web users, Spotify is stuck in that "early adopter" market and is having trouble expanding out to the general public. This ad should, in theory, help with that.

We wonder if an English version will be rolled out to the UK, or even the US once the service launches in the States - as it's scheduled to - in 2010.

We'd heard things can get pretty quiet over in New Zealand, so that's perhaps why such a time-consuming and painstakingly exact project has emerged from the isle.

A recent advert for Vodafone New Zealand sees a thousand mobile phones used to recreate a section of Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture.

The "Symphonia" uses 53 different ringtone alerts from 2000 sent messages in the piece, which on Vodafone UK's current pay as you go pricing would cost ?200 in texts alone.

The Sony Ericsson Jalou by Dolce & Gabbana is about as fashion as any handset aimed at the female market gets.

The new device is small, touts just enough tech spec to not make it a joke, has a mirror function and 24 carat gold plating.

To give you an idea of where the new phone is aimed, here is the ad - or "short film" - for the new phone that offers Dolce & Gabbana clad models in a film noir setting.

As well as being available via O2 on contract, the Jalou is available to buy handset-only for around the ?400 mark.

This time Apple play the "broken promises" card with PC claiming that it's the best yet, before Mac claims a spot of d?j? vu.

There then ensues a series of PCs stating the same thing with different Windows operating systems in getups from the ages.

While some UK consumers have received their copy of the new OS in the last couple of days due to early shipping because of the postal strikes, hundreds queued up last night for a midnight launch at PC World's flagship store.

Amazon has reported record pre-orders, so it will be interesting to see how long before Microsoft reveals official figures.

In order to reach out to the "tech savvy", it's been revealed the Conservatives will campaign via Spotify, the popular music streaming service.

PC Pro reports that the 40-second ads will feature the voice of the Tory party chairman, Eric Pickles, apparently criticising Labour's attempts to handle the economic crisis and urging a Conservative vote at the next General Election.

"We are always looking for new and relevant ways of engaging with people, and I think this Spotify advert adds to an already strong track record of being early adopters when it comes to online communication", says the shadow culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt.

"The growth of Spotify in the UK has been phenomenal. We were particularly impressed with its advertising model and its potential for political campaigning".

It's unknown if David Cameron uses the music streaming service. He made headline news in July for his comment on Twitter stating that "too many twits make a twat" although it's unlikely the micro-blogging service will be exempt from the Tory's election campaign.

 "Balls" director makes beautiful music

Sony has often pushed the boat out for its advertising campaigns and its new Soundville short film is no exception.

Directed by Juan Cabral, the chap behind the colourful Bravia "Balls" ad, this documents 3 days in the life of the Icelandic town of Seydisfjordur, after it's been transformed into a giant soundspeaker system.

The footage is of ordinary Seydisfjordur villagers, around 400 of which live in the village during winter when this was shot.

Some of the music has been composed especially for the project, while Cabral says the best bit was that, "every morning I had to choose a track to wake people up... not just people but a whole village".

A new advert from Microsoft for its mobile platform sees the software giant pushing the "Windows Phone" branding that's gone live with the release of the 6.5 OS.?

Promoting the HTC Pure - this version of the ad is for AT&T in the States - some commentators argue the ad could be a little misleading in suggesting Windows Phone is a product, rather than a platform.

Hit play now to see the new clip, complete with app icons in white tights, and let us know if you think it's a classic or a clunker in the comments box below.

Yahoo's new Y!ou branding has gone live and brings with it a new TV campaign from the online company. Only one major label signs up so far

Free All Music is a company, based in Atlanta, which still reckons ad-supported MP3 downloads is a viable business model. The company thinks it can do better than Spiralfrog and its similar proposition, which disappeared last year, by making users pick their own adverts.

On the site, you pick which MP3 you want, then you choose a sponsor to "buy" if for you. The site then displays a 15-18 second video ad, and once that's complete you'll be able to download the file - a DRM-free 256kbps MP3 file.

The advertiser will then be able to use your username and purchase info in its own advertising around the web - so it could display to the world that you just picked up Lady Gaga's "Poker Face". Free All Music can therefore sell multiple adverts on each downloaded file.

The catch is that you can only download as much as advertisers are willing to pay for. If no-one's prepared to stump up for a track then you won't be getting it. The company is, at launch, aiming for "typical iTunes behaviour" - 15 songs every 3 months.

How well that'll gel with the typical audience for music startups - which tend to be both big music fans and big music consumers, not iTunes users - remains to be seen. If the company can get more advertising, then the song allowance will increase.

What everything hinges on, though, is catalogue. It's widely agreed that one of the reasons for Spotify's early success was the strength of its catalogue and the ease of use of the software. At the moment Free All Music only has one major label signed up.

Also, given the wealth of other sites offering semi-legal free MP3s - even before you start looking at file sharing networks - it seems like it'll be tough for Free All Music to gain a foothold. We'll keep you posted of the company's progress.

doubleTwist, DVD Jon's media-syncing software company, is generating lots of publicity for a new version of its "media platform" product with a cheeky video that uses Apple's famous 1984 advert against it.

In the clip - shown above - drones wearing white iPod earphones are lectured to by a Steve Jobs-a-like until the screen is smashed with the message "On October 6 doubleTwist brings you choice".

Does the Apple-as-the-new-Microsoft argument ring true with you? Are you more likely to check out the new software because of this ad? Have your say in the comments box below.

First major economy where web overtakes TV

For the first time in a major economy, the internet sector in the UK's advertising market has overtaken the TV sector. It's a significant milestone for both the burgeoning web economy and the the faltering TV medium.

UK advertisers spent ?1.75 billion on web advertising in the first half of 2009 - 4.6% more than the same time last year - according to the Internet Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The web now accounts for 23.5% of advertising money spent in the UK - compared to 21.9% for television.

It was originally forecast that the milestone would be passed towards the end of the year, but TV ad spend has plummeted as a result of the recession, dropping 17% on last year's figures. It's now worth ?1.6 billion.

The UK is not the first country where this has happened - a similar watershed was met in Denmark six months ago. However analysts are saying that this is more siginificant in the UK, as it has a considerably larger economy.
