Mounts on the back of your television

Q-Acoustics has announced its Q-TV2s, a novel speaker system for televisions that improves the sound experience from your flatscreen, while not requiring an external amplifier and saving considerable space. How? Well, it mounts on the back of your display.

It connects up via RCA or headphone jack and provides 2.1 stereo sound which it reckons is considerably better than what the TV will put out by default, offering better treble, more dynamics, and a whole lot more bass. Most impressively, it manages that while still being just 38mm deep.

For the more technical amongst you, the left and right channel sound comes from four?wide-dispersion balanced-mode radiator 25W speakers, with the subwoofer (which actually comprises of four individual subs) packing 50W of juice. The L and R are swivelable (if that's a word) and there's an option that works with wall-mounted TVs too.

It'll suit 30 to 42-inch televisions, and is available right now from Amazon UK for ?300.

 USB speakers for your PC

Teufel has unveiled a pair of PC speakers, the Concept B 200. Intriguingly they connect via USB rather than through the typical 3.5mm jack, meaning that they include a sound card and amplifier, allowing the quality to be ramped up above the bog-standard sound devices that are usually found built into motherboards.

It's a 2.0 system, with four 30W power amplifiers in a metal case which supply juice to high and mid-low drivers in each speaker. That USB connection also powers the system, meaning that you won't have to plug them in, either. The amp also includes a USB hub for connecting other devices.

Teufel says that the speakers?"offer incredible sonic performance over a USB connection without a sky-high price tag". We'll let you be the judge of that. The Concept B 200 USB speakers cost ?184, and are available now.

Teufel has announced the Omniton 202, an all-weather speaker that can be fitted in places like gyms, swimming pools and pub gardens. "Whatever the situation, the Omniton 202 is up to the task", says the company, perhaps a little smugly.

The 202 has a 130mm woofer and a 25mm cloth dome tweeter which can cope with an output of 102dB without distortion. They're enclosed in bass reflex housing that means that a subwoofer isn't necessary.?

It has a water-resistant housing that can tolerate shock, moisture and "anything else you can throw at it", says Teufel. It has rubber sealing so it can sit on a stand or shelf, or you can mount it - the rear cable connector is designed with that task in mind.

The Teufel Omniton 202 is available now, and costs ?140 per pair.

Can this improve your laptop's sound?

Let's face it, your laptop or netbook speakers are pretty drab aren't they? Unless you've opted for one of those Toshiba Qosmio's with the Hardon Karmen sound systems, chances are the noise you get isn't going to make it beyond your desk let alone give you a chance to party in your hotel room.

That's where Altec Lansing is hoping to step in with an update to its Orbit range to allow you to plug it in to your laptop rather than just an MP3 player. Rather than a 3.5mm jack socket as found on the virtually identically named and spec-ed iMT237, it plugs in via USB giving you a digital connection rather than an analogue one.

Looks wise, the speaker is, as we've said, virtually the same in design and performance. You get the same hockey puck styled speaker, but this time it comes with a kick-out stand giving you the chance to aim it in your general direction. The stand certainly aids the speaker's performance over the sound just rising from the desk as before and it means you won't have to have it so loud. ?

When not in use the kickstand can be folded away and the in-built USB cable folded away out of sight for travelling.

Other notable differences over the previous model include the loss of the AAA battery in favour of taking a charge from your computer and a more stylish black and gold colour scheme over the previous silver offering.

The power option will save you having to worry about AAA batteries but it does mean that it will be draining power from your laptop or netbook and it's something to bear in mind if you are worried about power usage.

What about sound performance? As you might expect the Orbit iML237 isn't going to blow you away and audiophiles should probably stop reading now. While at loud volumes the performance is dubious for the price, but for what Altec Lansing set out to do the Orbit iML237 isn't too bad. It is all about giving you volume and the chance to share your music at your hotel bedroom desk rather than being a replacement for your home PC stereo system.

Verdict:

We tested it on a range of music from The Presets to Rolling Stones and while the speaker coped well enough, we wouldn't recommend them for every day listening if you are really into your music.

Of course it lacks any real bass element or depth, but then that's not really the point. This is a way of enhancing your laptop's speakers on the cheap rather than making your tunes sound the best they possibly could.

With that in mind, it's not too shabby.

Sony has often pushed the boat out for its advertising campaigns and its new Soundville short film is no exception.

Directed by Juan Cabral, the chap behind the colourful Bravia "Balls" ad, this documents 3 days in the life of the Icelandic town of Seydisfjordur, after it's been transformed into a giant soundspeaker system.

The footage is of ordinary Seydisfjordur villagers, around 400 of which live in the village during winter when this was shot.

Some of the music has been composed especially for the project, while Cabral says the best bit was that, "every morning I had to choose a track to wake people up... not just people but a whole village".

 Coolest speaker around?

Despite what the name suggests, Mobi Headphonies are not headphones. Nor are they tipping their hat the wonderful Simpsons episode about the Apple generation. No, a headphony – which I assume is the singular of Headphonies, is around 3-inches high and in the shape of a dumpy middle aged man wearing what looks more like a pair of ear muffs than headphones. It's not dissimilar to a Telly Tubby. Our particular model came in a rather boring matte black, but looking at the website it is available in various interesting decorations with obvious scope for expansion.

The back of the head is grilled, and a dead give away as to what it actually is – a portable speaker. With it being at the back, it means to get the best sound, you'll want it facing away from you – perhaps going against the point of having a fancy design.

There is a power switch on the base of the foot with a notification LED on the front. This will apparently last for 4 hours of playback. There is no volume control – this is instead done on the input device itself. Annoyingly, it's not smart enough to detect a null input and so it's very easy to leave it switched on with nothing playing and drain the battery.

At the rear of the device, where a tail would normally be, is a 3.5mm jack. Supplied is a male-to-male cable of around 30cm for connecting to your audio device – MP3 player, laptop, etc. This port also doubles up as a charging port, using a USB cable that adapts to 3.5mm. Because the charging port is the same as playback – there is no option to charge while you play – annoying if you happen to have left it switched on.

The natural option is to leave the cable permanently plugged into the device. But this sticks out at 90 degrees from the device, so being carried in a bag it gets damaged very quickly and you'll soon find the sound cutting in and out. Disconnect it and you run the risk of losing the cable – either way, you'll get screwed in due course.

This isn't the sort of thing you'd buy if you were worried about sound quality – realistically, it's a toy. However, we were quite surprised with the sound quality, being generally quite balanced and able to produce a fair amount of volume. It was significantly better than the inbuilt speakers on the N97, which we've always been quite impressed with.

There's no denying that the sound is impressive for its size – but having to keep charging it is a real pain. We'd have sooner taken the minor hit in sound quality to have had it un-amplified, as so many external speakers are.?

Verdict:

The Mobi Headphonies have a few design flaws, but once you get used to this – it does what it's meant to. It's a portable speaker that stands out from the crowd. But the question is – when will it get used and who will use it? We've all been on trains where people are blaring out music on their mobile phones – it's annoying and we do all we can to discourage it. We can't help but feel that this attempts to encourage exactly this, with groups of kids sat around tables, showing off their cool speakers and music taste. God help us.

At ?19.99, this is about double the price we'd expect it to sell for. It's not something we'd recommend buying, but it's not a bad product and if it floats your boat – then go for it.

Creative has announced a set of wireless speakers for your PC - the Creative Inspire S2 Wireless. The set comprises of a subwoofer and two satellites, as well as a tiny Bluetooth dongle which you plug into a USB port on your computer to bring the noise.

Each satellite measures 7.4 x 7.3 x 10.3cm, which Creative reckons is small enough to make them most useful for laptops. They have a range of about 10 metres, and contain dynamic 2-inch drivers which apparently emit "well-balanced audio". The subwoofer contains a front driver and rear-firing port tube that should mean that more bass reaches you - rather than getting lost in the floor or walls.

If you're finding your neighbours complaining, then there's a control knob on the subwoofer that should allow you to turn it down (or up, if they've been stealing plastic flamingos from your front garden). There's a remote control on the right speaker which has an aux-in input, a headphone-out connection and a LED that displays speaker status.

The Inspire S2s are available now and cost ?130. A wired version is also available, for ?70.

LG has launched a new Blu-ray home cinema system, the HB954SP, a BD-Live-enabled, Full HD 1080p, 1000 Watt, 5.1 effort.

With five oval satellite Mark-Levinson-tuned speakers, the connected system offers one-click access to YouTube videos, upscaling of standard DVDs, playback from USB and (only) two HDMI inputs.

There's also an iDock for an iPod or iPhone and LG's "Sound Gallery" for easy set-up as well as handy options such as turning off the bass in "night mode".

The system will be available from November 2009, but the really crucial bit for most people - pricing - is yet to be revealed.

LG doesn't offer RRPs, instead suggesting price comparison sites for an idea of cost, not a great strategy for a product that's yet to be released.

Pioneer has revealed a pair of iPod docks that'll be launching in the next few weeks. There's the XW NAS3 and XW NAS5. Both are officially licensed by Apple in the "Made for iPod" range.

First up, the XW-NAS3 contains a pair of speakers and a subwoofer that makes up a 2.1 system. It has Bluetooth, too, which means that if you're not an iPod or iPhone owner, but you do have Bluetooth on your player, then you can use that to transmit instead.

The XW-NAS5 contains all the same functionality as the NAS3, but adds a couple of sound enhancement features. Pioneer's "Advanced Sound Receiver" enhances compressed music files, and its "Auto Level Control" will normalise the volume between different tracks.

Pioneer don't have full pricing and availability details just yet, but as soon as they do, they've promised they'll send them to us. When they do, we'll update this post.

Revo has just announced a new iPod dock/DAB radio/music system called the Domino D3. It combines a number of audio sources into one unit, including the ability to listen to Last.fm on the device.

It's worth mentioning the design, because the company has won design awards in the past. The D3 has a retro look, with soft edges and has a rubberised coating. On the left is the OLED display, on the right is the speaker, and in the middle are three knobs used to control its functions.

Those functions include DAB, DAB+, internet radio, FM radio, wireless streaming of music files from a connected PC or Mac, and an iPod and iPhone dock. As previously mentioned, it can also access Last.fm, though you'll need a subscription to get access to that service. It comes with 30 days free, and it's ?3 per month thereafter.

The Domino is also available in cheaper versions. There's a D1 edition which has DAB but no Wi-Fi, and a D2 that has Wi-Fi but no DAB. The D1 costs ?130, the D2 is ?150, and the full-on D3 is ?170. All three are on sale from 1 November and come in black or white.

The Logitech Z520 speakers are desktop stereo speakers designed to be paired with a computer or hooked up to an MP3 player. There is no subwoofer, remote or battery option - just two compact speakers and the wires to hook them up with.

With no clever functions, shiny widgets or frills of any kind it seems odd that a speaker set up like this would cost very much at all, let alone weighing in at close to a hundred pounds. At least it seems odd until you hear them.

Although the Z520s lack a separate subwoofer, the bass reproduction is still very good. Although this doesn't have the punch of an individual subwoofer, it still sounds great, providing enough rumble to bring some weight to music and sounds in games without being overpowering. At low levels the Z520s provide crisp, distinct sound, and this quality carries on up to higher levels.

Despite being relatively small, the Z520s easily have enough power to provide music at a decent volume for a good sized room. A common mistake with cheap speakers is to provide a subwoofer that over powers the sound and destroying the balance. This certainly isn't the case here.

In terms of design the Z520s certainly look the part, being sleek and understated. The volume control is a simple dial on the front, which doubles as the off switch. There is no means to control the level of bass on the speakers independently of the main volume control, but this is not much of a problem given that the proportions are pretty much spot on by default.

The lack of a remote control is a bit of a shame, not that one is particularly necessary for a set of desktop speakers, but for the price it seems reasonable to expect a few trimmings. That said the speakers do include a headphone and auxiliary connection so they have everything they need to serve in a purely desktop speaker capacity.

Although the Z520s are certainly small enough to be quite portable they are very heavy for their size and this is worth considering if you are thinking of getting speakers to accompany a laptop or MP3 player when travelling.

Verdict:
The sound quality of the Z520s is great, but the price tag is less so. While the lack of a subwoofer means that the speakers have fewer wires, this quite a premium for this luxury. Ultimately, the problem is that if you are really wanting great quality sound, you'll not be put off by the extra wires of a 2.1 system.

At the ?100 price point, there are a lot of options open to you, many of which will have extra features or even superior sound quality. If you do happen to be that rare somebody who really needs good sound quality but cannot have a subwoofer then your prayers may just have been answered.

Hercules - not the greek hero, the hardware company - has announced a pair of speaker sets that the company claims to be the thinnest 2-channel speaker package currently available. There's the Hercules XPS 2.0 40 Slim and the Hercules XPS 2.1 40 Slim.

The XPS 2.0 40 Slim speakers stand 6cm wide and 23.5cm tall, and were designed by Amylee, of Paris. They come with a mini wired remote control that also includes a volume knob, headphone jack and line-in input. The speakers are magnetically shielded.

The XPS 2.1 40 Slim adds a subwoofer into the mix, which is made of wood and "ensures a powerful bass presence", says the company. It also contains the same wired remote control, and can pump out 32W RMS - 8W per speaker and 16W for the subwoofer.

The 2.0 40 Slim costs ?30, and the addition of the subwoofer in the 2.1 40 Slim brings the cost up to ?50. Both will be available from October.

KEF has announced the KHT8002 Soundbar, which joins the rest of the company's KHT series of home theatre sound solutions. The company says that it's designed to match the design of modern HDTVs.

The main bit of the package is the bar itself - the HTF2003 - which contains nine speakers - three KEF Uni-Q drivers that contain a 75mm and 15mm mid-range and tweeter, three 75-mm woofers and three 75mm auxiliary bass radiators that pump out bassier frequencies. It's sized to match a 42-inch or greater television, and has a wall mount bracket and table stand, so you can pick either option.

The HTS7001 satellite surround speakers bring up the rear - containing dual 50mm woofers and 19mm high-frequency drivers. They can either be placed on a tabletop or mounted on a wall. Finally, everything is underpinned by a 200W KUBE-2 subwoofer, which contains a side-firing 250mm auxiliary bass radiator.

The whole package will cost you ?1100 and will be available in October.

Here's a few snaps which we grabbed of the Altec Lansing InMotion Classic iPod Dock. It does more than just dock Apple products, though - it also contains an FM radio and has an auxiliary input on the back for plugging in other audio sources.

It's got a sleek retro design, complete with whopping great big handle so you can stick it on your shoulder and pretend that you're from the past, pretending to be from the future. When it was briefly demonstrated to us, it sounded good, and was loud enough to mildly irritate nearby bar staff.

The InMotion Classic costs ?120 from Apple stores and ?130 from John Lewis and Dixons. It's available right now.

 iPod Boombox with FM radio

Altec Lansing, the company which provided the speakers for the Woodstock festival in 1969, now makes a range of iPod docks called InMotion, and they've just announced a new one called the InMotion Classic.

The "Classic" bit appears to refer to the styling - which harkens back to the late 70s and early 80s with sharp angles and clean lines. The big handle which sits on top of the product can even be moved to the top so that the dock takes on the appearance of a (small) boombox.

The dock can hook up to your iPod or iPhone, but also has an auxiliary input for connecting any other audio source. Lastly, if you're tired of your own music, there's an FM radio onboiard with 4 station presets available.

It has a remote control, and carries an internal battery that should last for 6 hours on a 1 hour charge. It's shipping right now, and costs ?120 from Apple stores, or ?130 from John Lewis and Dixons.

We've brought you news of "Headphonies" before, but now the diminutive speakers are heading to the UK with a limited run of certain designs due to be available online.

3-inch portable speakers that claim to "combine art, music and innovation and pack a hell of a musical punch", Headphonies work with anything with a standard audio output and come with their own USB charging cord and audio cable.

With designs from "cult" artists such as Eran Weinberg, Jeremy Madl and Jeremiah Ketner, Headphonies cost from ?19.99, are available from www.headphonies.co.uk and will be on sale through select HMV stores across the UK from 1 October.

Memorex's compact Travel Speaker launches with the boast that it will turn your iPod into a "full-blown stereo", which, with a max 4 Watt output, might be a little on the optimistic side.

With a thin and lightweight design that easily folds flat for storage, the speaker adds to its portable credentials with a "custom-fit carrying sleeve", otherwise known as a case.

The device offers a backlit display with clock function and line-in jack to connect non-docking iPod devices, CD players, and other MP3 players.

Powered by four batteries the Memorex Mi2290 Travel Speaker should be available in shops and online now, priced at ?59.95 or 70 euros.
