A new Nintendo advert for the DSi handheld has been unveiled from Wallace & Gromit creator Aardman Animations.

As well as advertising the device - with a little kid sticking it on his Christmas list - the video also showcases Fipnote Studio - a free downloadable application for the device - as that's what Aardman used to create the clip.

iRiver has dropped us word that it's bringing its "Story" e-book reader to the UK. The South Korean manufacturer, famous for its MP3 players, says that the Story is "stepping up to challenge Sony's version and Amazon's new Kindle".

The reader has an e-ink display like many others, and can get 7000 page turns from one battery charge. It works with epub, pdf and txt formats, and also displays office files like doc, ppt and xls, and image formats like jpeg, bmp and gif - though images will only display in greyscale.

Interestingly the Story has a full QWERTY keyboard, with which the user can interact with an on-board diary and scheduler. It has a voice recorder and headphone jack, too, and a built-in speaker, which can play music or an audiobook, and continue playback while reading other things on the screen.

The device has 2GB of on-board flash memory, along with an SD card slot. That'll fit around 1500 ebooks, iRiver reckons. There's optional Wi-Fi, and it connects via USB 2.0 to your computer for loading content. It comes in matte white design only, and costs ?230. It's available now.

Activision Blizzard, the publishers of the ultra-successful World of Warcraft MMORPG, will be launching a series of TV ads for the game in Europe. A series in the US a while back featured William Shatner, Mr T, Verne Troyer, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Willy Toledo.

Only one of the European ones has appeared so far, featuring the man and mohawk that is Mr T. He confirms in the ad that Europe will be getting a "mohawk grenade" that players can throw at people to turn their heads into a night elf with a mohawk.

There's a second, similar commercial too, which scan's Mr T's head and hair, before declaring it perfect. Both should be showing on British TV screens from now - in time to convince parents to buy their kids a subscription for Christmas. At least we assume that's the idea...

Spotify's new Symbian app gets a video demo here with a quick look at the features the mobile phone application will offer.?

To get Spotify's Symbian application, users must be paid-up premium subscribers. They can then either download it directly to their phones by visiting m.spotify.com through their mobile web browser, or by entering their phone number on the new Symbian information page to receive instructions via an SMS.

4iThumbs appears to be designed for iPhone users that can't get on with the touchscreen, but don't want to give up their precious.

It's a clear, tactile typing aid for the iPhone's screen that "facilitates faster and more accurate typing, enables blind typing, reduces glare and is the strongest screen protector on the market".

The tactile ridges are said to "guide thumbs for accurate input to ease the transition from other smartphones to the iPhone", so a little like stabilisers, we guess.

The phone co is flogging its Space Hopper theme almost to the death with a new stunt that presumes people want to watch a live video feed of said bouncy toys being pumped up in real time as people tweet a hashtagged phrase on the micro-blogging site.

The whole stunt is designed to promote Sony Ercisson's recently launched Satio and Aino handsets, although users of the former may prefer the company to concentrate its efforts on a firmware upgrade.

Asus has dropped us word of its latest Eee Box, the 1501. The Eee box series are nettops - tiny, cheap, relatively low-power machines that are designed as secondary computers (perhaps for use in a media centre setup) or for those who don't use their machine very much.

The 1501, Asus reckons, is one of the world's smallest computers that features both a dedicated Nvidia ION graphics chip (most nettops have less-powerful integrated graphics) and an optical drive for DVD playback. It can also output full 1080p from an HDMI-out port.

Elsewhere in the spec sheet, there's a dual core Intel Atom 330 processor, 2GB of memory (expandable to 4), a 250GB hard drive, 5.1 speaker support, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and an Ethernet port. It comes with Windows 7, an upscaler and a built in IPTV player, and can be either mounted on the back of a monitor or on its stand.

The device claims to be 50% quieter than most desktop PCs, and has 70% less power consumption to boot. It measures 193 x 193 x 39mm, which is 1.5L of volume. It costs ?340 and is available now.

It appears as if Microsoft's advertising deal with Family Guy is back on again, after the software giant officially announced the plans and then changed its corporate mind deeming the grown-up cartoon not family friendly enough and opting for Warner Bros instead.

A selection of Windows 7 themed Family Guy clips have just showed up on Microsoft's official YouTube channel, but whether they are previews of what American viewers can expect to see soon, or the dumped ads filed for posterity, we don't know.

Microsoft has teamed up with New York department megastore Saks for a big Christmas promotion, that, as well as a special sales area inside, includes Windows 7 powering the store's infamous Christmas windows displays.

As part of the window displays, Microsoft has set up a screen displaying a live Twitter stream, with posts hashtagged HolidayWindows automatically showing up on the display.

What Microsoft perhaps didn't account for though, is Apple-loving Twitter users taking advantage of the stream to promote their own pro-Apple and/or anti-Microsoft messages.

A quick glance at the #HolidayWindows stream sees it chock-full of such pro-Apple pithy missives as the brief "Get a Mac" that appears multiple times.

There's also the likes of "Get a Mac! Just follow the masses down to the Apple store. The one that looks like the Windows store... only way cooler", "Avoid viruses - get a Mac", and "Ignore Microsoft, you're not a PC, you are a human being. Get a Mac and feel human again".

As @mooseblaster says, this cannot end well.

UPDATE: It seems the whole stunt was masterminded by Mac fan site MacDailyNews, but appears to have taken on a life on its own now with pro-Mac tweets coming thick and fast, way outnumbering any Windows fans who have attempted to mobilise with a counter-tweet attack.

Google has announced the launch of a mobile version of the new Google Search results for movies with a light-hearted promo vid.

With the claim that the service makes it easier to plan a trip to the movies, the app works for iPhones, Palm webOS handsets and Android-powered devices.

To use it, go to google.com in the phone's web browser, search for "movies", and then tap on the "More movies" link. From there, Google says, you can either browse a list of movies or "select the 'Theaters' button to browse a list of theaters near you".

The new movie listings page includes buttons to play trailers on your phone, ratings and categories, movie posters, upcoming showtimes, as well as a list of the nearest cinemas.

The new search results for movies are available in English in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Fring has rolled out an update to its mobile phone application that allows users to conduct video calls over the mobile web. Fring video enables you to use both Wi-Fi and 3G to make calls to other Fring users or to your Skype or GTalk contacts.

Fring is an IM aggregator that connects up with IM networks like MSN, AIM, GoogleTalk and Skype, as well as social networks like?Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm. You can make voice calls over the service, using apps on Symbian, Android and iPhone handsets, and now video calls too.

However, for the moment the video functionality is limited to a small subset of Nokia devices - the N97 mini, N97, 5800, N95 8G, N95 and N82. Fring promises that the functionality will be rolled out across a number of other platforms "very shortly".

An interesting mobile phone network has just launched in the UK. Although owned by O2 and run by its execs, GiffGaff claims to be a completely separate "people-powered" operator, offering very cheap calls, texts and web browsing in exchange for customer involvement in the network.

You sign up, or get referred by an existing member, and then get sent a Pay-As-You-Go SIM card which will only work in unlocked handsets. You can then use that SIM card normally by topping up credit, or you can earn credit by doing certain things.

You earn ?5 by introducing a new member. You earn ?2 from a referral when people sign up, or 50p by telling friends about the service. There's other options too. Those points are doled out twice-yearly, in November and May.

Most impressively, there's a whole range of "tools" that consist of imagery and videos you can download. If you can turn one of those into an advert, and GiffGaff reckons it's good enough to use, you can become a "V.I.G." and get free texts, calls and web access for a year.

Speaking of web access, if you top up ?10, then you get unlimited browsing for 6 months. Calls are free to other GiffGaff users, and 8p per minute to other networks. Texts are free to GiffGaff users and 4p to other networks. GiffGaff reckons that makes it the cheapest operator around.

Razer has announced the new "Imperator" gaming mouse with "contours and grooves specifically crafted to enhance aggressive mousing movements made by gamers".

A right-handed ergonomic mouse aimed at palm and fingertip gamers, Razer promises "your grip stays locked and planted no matter how often you lift and swipe your mouse while playing".

Boasting adjustable side buttons that slide and lock into the "ideal thumb position", the new mouse also gets a 5600dpi Razer Precision 3.5G laser sensor.

Available online now, the Imperator will see a December retail debut for around $80 or 70 euros.

So far Apple has stayed out of the advertising spat between iPhone operator AT&T and rival network Verizon, but Apple's latest ads for its mobile makes a feature of the network in runs on - which can't be a coincidence considering the bashing Verizon has doled out of late, even sending the iPhone to the island of misfit toys.

While AT&T hit back with Luke Wilson, Apple has stepped in with two new iPhone ads that follow the format of previous versions, but ask "can your phone and your network do that?" after voice-over man demos the ability of the iPhone to handle data while on a voice call, the first time AT&T's service has been highlighted in Apple's campaign.

Those clued up on the 2009 tech scene will grasp this concept straight away as it's just so very "now".

Using augmented reality, the new WorkSnug iPhone app, created in conjunction with Plantronics, lets iPhone owners see at a glance suitable perching locations in their vicinity for a quick log-on and a coffee or somewhere to work the day away.

Rating the locations - which could vary from coffee shop chains to greasy spoons to official pay-for-a-desk type work locations - on power provision, atmosphere and noise levels, it should give an idea of what a place is all about and users can add their own reviews too.

Currently launching for the London metro area, WorkSnug will soon also be available for the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Berlin and Madrid with a website planned to launch in the future.

The WorkSnug iPhone app is available now absolutely gratis from the iTunes App Store.

We know that publishing giant Conde Nast is taking the idea of an Apple iTablet so seriously it's already prepping content for the as-yet-unofficial platform, and here Conde Nast title Wired shows off a preview of what the mag might look like on the rumoured iPad.

The concept video shows Wired's iTablet app complete with animated, interactive graphics as well as the scrolling text, flippable pages and landscape or portrait options you'd expect from an ebook reader.

Is Conde Nast showing its desperation over the dying print industry and grasping at straws by taking the time and trouble to mock-up content for an arguably imaginary device, or is it a forward thinking trail blazer with an eye to the future?

Sony's latest advert for the?PlayStation 3 Slim?will push its Blu-ray credentials in the US by telling consumers, possibly looking to buy the console, that really you're paying for the gaming bits and the Blu-ray player is free.

"You get the best Blu-ray player around built in for free", says the Sony man to some punk ass whiny teenager complaining that his grandma is watching Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

In December, consumers will have access to the first ever hybrid disc that will feature Sony Pictures' District 9 movie and a demo of God of War 3.

The ad airs in the US next week.?

Google has used its automatic speech recognition tech, as seen in Google Talk, to offer machine-generated automatic captions across all of its YouTube videos.

"The captions will not always be perfect", says Google, "but even when they're off, they can still be helpful - and the technology will continue to improve with time".

Google is also launching automatic caption timing that it says makes it "significantly easier" to create captions manually by creating a text file with all the words which then uses Google's ASR tech to figure out when the words are spoken and create captions for the video.

A small startup from Poole has created an app that aims to make it easier to share your digital media collection between your various gadgets. It's called Skifta, and allows you to shift content between a number of devices with just one catch - they have to be DLNA enabled.

If you watch the more-than-a-little-cheesy intro video above, you'll see that it works with anything from televisions to radios to laptops to games consoles to digital photo frames. It turns your computer into a DLNA server, which can then pump pictures, music or video to any device in your home.

But that's not the clever bit. The clever bit is that you can connect that server with another computer anywhere in the world, and then stream from the new device to anything on that network - so if you go to a friend's house and connect then you can instantly stream your vintage Village People live album to his television or speakers. He'll love you for it.

What's more is that there are various "boosters" available for system. A Twitter one was demonstrated, which provides a live Twitter feed to your TV, or a digital photo frame, or other home gadget. You could also build boosters for Last.fm, Flickr, a Gmail checker, an RSS reader, or any other service. In time, third parties will also be able to build boosters.

Based on the Chrome Browser, Google has said that it will focus on three things, speed, security, and simplicity.?

Google says they expect to have device manufacturers announce devices, such as netbooks and "smartbooks" in the middle on next year with the new OS expected to be launched around November 2010.?

It is perhaps testament to the wacky world of Wii that we're not entirely sure if this is a spoof, or if it is in fact a new religion-themed game for Nintendo's games system due Easter next year - but if it is real and we've offended anyone in our confusion, we're sorry.

As you'll see from the video above "Mass: We Pray" is presented as a new family Wii game that brings the church experience to your living room with appropriately themed accessories such as a crucifix-shaped controller and a Kneeler accessory.

"A family shouldn't have to wait until Sunday to worship the Lord. Now you can go to church every day without leaving your home", says Prayer Works Interactive, supposedly a new game development company founded in Boston in 2007.

American mobile phone operator AT&T has hit back at rival Verizon using the secret weapon of Luke Wilson.

The new ad, which supposedly compares the two operators' 3G offerings side by side, is a direct response to Verizon's current map-themed campaign which makes it appear as if AT&T has very little coverage across the United States.

AT&T was refused its initial legal request for an injunction to stop Verizon showing the adverts which AT&T deemed "misleading", so for now it seems a tit for tat battle will ensue until AT&T gets a second chance in court on 16 December.

While we doubt Apple's voiceover guy will be highlighting this offering in any forthcoming advert ("you want your iPhone to blow? There's an app for that) the Blower - Real Air app appears to do just that.

By abusing the phone's speaker by producing low frequencies it appears that the app can create a tiny stream of air from the speaker - enough at least to blow out birthday candles - which is a pretty impressive trick, although not quite magic.

It's no Airblade, granted, but does go some way to show what a clever mind can come up with - even if the ultimate result falls somewhat flat in the land of pointless.

A startup called RidRx has created an adaptor that'll allow you to mod an old stethoscope into a fully-functioning iPhone or iPod touch-enabled version of the heartbeat detector. It comes with a phone dock/holder and an app that will record and analyse the audio you capture.

It's called the iStethoscope Pro, and can't be sold for anything other than recreational use thanks to the US regulators. However, it could prove useful - if only for kids who want to prove an irregular heartbeat to their PE teachers so they're able to get out of rugby practice on a cold November morning.

The adaptor kit costs $30, but you'll need to provide your own stethoscope - which will likely set you back the best part of $100 too, unless you know a friendly Doctor. The app itself costs 99 cents and is available now on the iPhone App Store.

An enterprising games programmer named Eric Ruth has built a NES-style 8-bit demake of last year's zombie co-op shooter Left 4 Dead. It's being announced on the same date as the official sequel to the title, but won't be available until 4 January 2010.

It runs in 256 x 240 resolution and features 16 colours and four sound channels. Characters can move in four directions, and all special infected are present. The first mission - No Mercy is complete, and other levels are currently in progress. There's no official blessing of Valve - the original game's creators - but they generally take a fairly relaxed view of fan creations like this.

All the original four campaigns will be present in the final release of the title, and all coding, debugging, SFX, music and art have been done by Eric Ruth. Quite a bit of work, and judging by the video above, executed admirably. There's a brief playthrough report on the Web, but stay tuned for more details. If you can't wait, then try out similar Left 4k Dead.

Somehow we don't think this clip with be showing up in any internet video greatest hits compilations, unlike similar, more successful dance-themed vids of late.

Maybe it gets better after the 54-second mark (there's 4 mins 45 in total to cringe through) but that's all we managed before our twitchy mouse finger made the awfulness stop.

Smartphones really are something aren’t they? You can leave the house with just one gadget that does it all now. And it does it all well.

But one thing that has been known to take the shine off many a smartphone's performance is the fact that opening up too many apps can just cripple them.

Nokia claims to have cracked that problem with the N900 and this little exploration seems to show it off nicely. Just how well it will work in the real world we’ll have to wait and see what the masses make of it.

And, as anybody who lives in a glass house will tell you: windows aren’t everything.

Following the screenshots unveiled recently, Sony is now offering an early peek at PlayStation 3 v3.10 firmware update.

Keepin' up with the Jones, the update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience with the option for the PS3 to automatically update Facebook News Feeds with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity.

Other 3.10 highlights include the photo category on the XMB getting revamped, a modification to the PSN Friends List and the option to choose a colour for a PSN ID on the XMB.

Get out your bunting - Get Safe Online week 2009 has officially begun. Get Safe Online is an initiative between the government, the Serious Organised Crime Agency and various private sector partners which aims to educate individuals and small businesses on how to keep safe online.

The scheme has been running for 5 years or so and is headquartered at GetSafeOnline.org. In the past, the focus has been on topics like identity theft and phishing, but this year the main thrust has been to educate people about the dangers of becoming a "mule".

As explained in the video above, a "mule" is a person whose bank account is used to launder money. You sign up (usually through a job ad) with your bank details, you receive cash, and then forward it on to other people via wire transfer. They want you because your account has been clean for years, you have good credit history, and as a result you're less likely to get caught.

If you are caught, though, you're implicated in a web of crime, liable for all those transfers, likely in lots of debt (because the cash that appeared in your account is confiscated) and your credit history will be ruined. Not a good idea.

So next time you spot one of those appealing-looking job ads, or someone contacts you out-of-the-blue with a job offer for a vague-looking company, it's probably best to ignore it. Be safe out there.

Offering over ten "spells" the app can be practised alone before would-be wizards can "duel" opponents.

In fact, water goes beyond floating - it actually bounces, as these amazing super slo-mo pictures prove.

I can't wrap my head around the maths of it all, but it's the effect that makes rain drops drop-shaped and allows insects to walk on the surface of ponds.

Google has announced that its YouTube video-sharing site is going 1080p. It's available to test right now on some videos, but will be going live for all users at some point next week. Until then, you can see some 1080p content by appending "&fmt=37" to the end of the URL.

Google says: "As resolution of consumer cameras increases, we want to make sure YouTube is the best home on the web to showcase your content. For viewers with big monitors and a fast computer, try switching to 1080p to get the most out of the fullscreen experience".

YouTube has accepted 1080p uploads for some time, but downscales them to 720p in the processing phase of the upload. Luckily, however, the originals are stored, so YouTube will be re-encoding and converting any existing 1080p videos in its database.

When the feature goes live for all users, we'll update this post.

A recent study by Nokia and Kings' College London Department of Twin Research has examined the music taste of nearly 4000 twins.

The results boil down to suggest up to 50% of music taste has already been decided by our genes, although "on the whole, musical taste is determined just as much by nature as it is by specific individual experiences".

"As much as 50% of our musical taste being predetermined, it appears there is a strong argument for the existence of 'music genes'", says Adrian North, professor of psychology at Heriot Watt University. ?

Nature's influence is said to be strongest on the appreciation of pop, classical and hip-hop music,? and weakest when it comes to country, hit play on the video above for more.

Although the Verizon Droid and N900 aren't connected, the Nokia video, currently playing out on YouTube, features a Cloverfield style shoot of a group of men talking about a new mobile phone in what looks like an interrogation room.?

Intel has unveiled an ebook reader with a difference, a device "designed to increase independence for people who have learning disabilities such as dyslexia, or have visual-impairment such as partial sightedness, blindness or for anyone who struggles with reading standard print".

As well as reading digital books aloud, the Intel Reader offers OCR-like abilities, capturing text with its built-in camera and reading the words aloud at varying speeds, as well as playing MP3 files.

Powered by the Intel Atom processor and boasting 2GB flash memory storage said to be good for 500,000 pages of text, it runs Linux and some third-party software. Battery life for reading aloud is said to be 4 hours.

The Intel Reader is not cheap - it launches at $1499 in the States. The UK launch of the new device is scheduled for 17 November, so we will bring you more UK-relevant info then, meanwhile, hit play on the video above for a walkthrough.

HP?is to use tilt shift photography in a major campaign launching soon, the photographer behind the project has said.

Using the tilt-shift technique that makes real life shots look like they are actually a model village, videographer Keith Loutit's new work is a play on his previous tilt shift videos filmed in Sydney.

Called "Create Amazing", Loutit has built on his previous video shooting in Shanghai, New York, Santorini, London & Istanbul, with further set work in LA to give the video a more world view.

No word from HP as to when the adverts will be going live or when we can expect to see them.?

Mozilla's internet browser Firefox celebrates its 5th birthday today. "Five years ago today, Mozilla launched Firefox 1.0 with the belief that, as the most significant social and technological development of our time, the Internet is a public resource that must remain open and accessible to all. Within the first four days of launch, more than 1 million people had downloaded a brand new browsing experience", the open source organisation says in a blog post.

"In just five years, that number has swelled to over 330 million users worldwide; almost a quarter of Internet users worldwide choose Firefox. Today, Firefox ships in more than 70 languages and offers users more than 7000 add-ons to help customize their browsing experience".

When Firefox launched Microsoft's Internet Explorer alone controlled a whopping 99% of the browser market. Fast forward 5 years and Firefox enjoys a 23% browser market share, although with increasing competition from the likes of Opera, Apple and Google. Q-Acoustics has announced its Q-TV2s, a novel speaker system for televisions that improves the sound experience from your flatscreen, while not requiring an external amplifier and saving considerable space. How? Well, it mounts on the back of your display.

It connects up via RCA or headphone jack and provides 2.1 stereo sound which it reckons is considerably better than what the TV will put out by default, offering better treble, more dynamics, and a whole lot more bass. Most impressively, it manages that while still being just 38mm deep.

For the more technical amongst you, the left and right channel sound comes from four?wide-dispersion balanced-mode radiator 25W speakers, with the subwoofer (which actually comprises of four individual subs) packing 50W of juice. The L and R are swivelable (if that's a word) and there's an option that works with wall-mounted TVs too.

The date for the launch of the PSP version of LittleBigPlanet has finally been confirmed for the UK.

Sony has told gaming site CVG that the new title will be out in the UK on 20 November, a few days behind the US release on 17 November.

We knew it was coming, and now it's here. The awesome Tauntaun sleeping bag, which began its life as an April Fools Joke, is available for pre-order on ThinkGeek's website.

The site says: "after exhaustive movie viewing research and analysis?ThinkGeek Labs?has isolated the exact synthetic compounds needed to re-create Tauntaun fur". "This high-quality sleeping bag looks just like a Tauntaun, complete with saddle,?printed internal intestines, and a plush lightsaber zipper pull".

If you want to get one for yourself, it'll cost you $100 (about ?60) plus postage. Be quick, though - there's very limited numbers available and customers are only able to buy a maximum of two each. ThinkGeek promises that if you order now, it'll ship before 25 November - whether that'll be in time for Christmas post to the UK is unclear.

Apple is rumoured to be testing some prototypes of a next-generation iPhone that includes an RFID reader built in. According to Einar Rosenberg, who runs LinkedIn's Near Field Communications group, "the reaction was very positive that we can expect this in the next gen iPhone".

We're a little skeptical. Not that Apple is testing RFID in iPhones, after all - it's patented the idea, but that it'll be showing up in the next iPhone in June 2010. On the one hand, near-field communications is a growing industry, but on the other hand there's relatively few places you can use it right now (outside of the Oyster Card system on the London tube network).

Rosenberg posits that it could be used to link iPhones to Macs for syncing purposes, which is possible. We think it's more likely, though, that this is an extension of Apple's new iPod-touch based purchasing systems for Apple store staffers, and could make its way into a more enterprise-targeted product.

At the Vision 2009 conference, in Stuttgart, Sony has shown off a multitouch surface display called the Atractable that's rather like the Microsoft Surface controller,which offers coffee table computing.

The system has been developed between Sony ISS and Atracsys, a Swiss optical tracking company. The interface can analyse body movements and act on any gesture or change in position, including your body, arm, hand or finger. More intriguingly, Sony reckons that it's sensitive enough to work out a user's age, sex and "emotion" - recognising?happiness, anger, surprise, sadness and neutrality.

The device comprises two Sony ISS XCD-V60 cameras that build a 3D image. Those cameras can then be used to control a cursor, avatar or robot. Atracsys' CEO, Gaetan Marti, says that the unit "can be used in virtually any scenario, be it gaming, industrial, medical or retail".

Sony ISS' marketing manager, Arnaud Destruels, told Pocket-lint: "Such interfaces were conceived many decades ago, with science fiction films using them to convey a futuristic feeling. The large time gap between conception and implementation highlights just how complex the task has been as well as the coding expertise at Atracsys".

Google, perhaps reacting to criticism that it's keeping a whole load of your data in disparate places, has launched a "dashboard" that displays all the info that the search giant is keeping on you, and allowing you to modify that data.

The service, which can be found at google.com/dashboard, covers your account, alerts, Blogger, calendar, contacts, custom search engines, docs, finance, friend connect, Gmail, iGoogle, health, Latitude, mobile sync, Orkut, Picasa, your public profile, reader, shopping list, talk, tasks, voice, web history, and YouTube. There's also a few other products that aren't available yet on the dashboard.

Google says, at the bottom of the page, "This page represents the data associated with this Google account. All data is private unless indicated with (an) icon?as visible to others". Next to every entry in the list is an option to manage that information and modify it.

There's a video that explains the system in more detail, which we're currently trying to track down (Google's removed it from YouTube) but probably a better way to understand it is to go visit Google Dashboard yourself, and see exactly what the big G knows about you. You might find it scary.

In the States Motorola has revealed its latest advert for the coming soon Droid.

Moving away from the iPhone-bashing Droid Does pre-launch campaign, this new effort is a big budget affair seeing Droids in pods fired to the earth from Stealth bombers, before revealing the device's "drop date" of 6 November.

Sony Ericsson has released a detailed video of its new Xperia X10 mobile phone.

As well as offering hands-on footage of the new handset and its interface, the official vid goes into great detail about the new Timescape and Mediascape functionality.

As some of you might know, Timescape is a communications app, which aggregates email, Facebook, Twitter, IM, and SMS into one big "lifestream", while Mediascape is built around music, video and images and organises all three on your device.

Gosh, Sony Ericsson has done quite a job on the interface for its forthcoming "Rachael" Android handset. The bulk of the additions seem to be targeted at the multimedia end of the operating system, which, as Engadget points out, has always been a little on the meagre side.

There's a tinge of blue about everything, and some very Zune-influenced menus and interface choices. Lots of big pictures of artists too, which we hope are sourced from the Web, otherwise our patchy ID3 tags will be exposed. The title of the video also betrays the screen resolution that the device is getting - a roomy 480 x 854.

So we've got a good look at the interface, and a good look at the outside of the device, all that's left is a full reveal of the handset - something that we should be getting imminently. We'll keep you posted.

LG is preparing to launch a new range of televisions in the UK under the "Seamless Entertainment" banner.

With the advertising campaign kicking off now, the range will be officially revealed at a launch event on 12 November.

As well as being super slim with a thin bezel and offering LED technology, LG is hoping to capture consumer's credit cards with a new gimmick - Bluetooth connectivity.

Footage of Nintendo's new DSi XL (or LL as it's known in Japan) has been unearthed that gives a good comparison of how much larger the new model is over predecessors.

It's considerably larger - and more expensive - than the DSi. The XL offers dual 4.25-inch screens and comes with a bigger, thicker, pen-shaped stylus controller.

LG's accidentally put a website for its forthcoming Android-powered GW620 handset live a little bit early. While we're expecting it to go down imminently, the site is full of latin text but does contain a few videos that demonstrate some of the functionality of the handset.

There's a 5-megapixel camera, full 5-row QWERTY keyboard, 3-inch touchscreen, 3.5mm headphone jack and microUSB port. On the inside, it comes equipped with Android (though not Android 2.0, it appears) with custom UI, a "social networking service manager", and some intriguing facial recognition software.

Check out the video above, complete with social networking butterfly, creepy stalker-owl and awesome QWERTY-toothed monster thing. There's no sign of any pricing or availability info yet, but it's due before the end of the year. We'll keep you posted.

At the Japanese FPD expo in Tokyo, a host of manufacturers have been showing off their latest products. Among them is LG, with its remarkably thin LED backlit display. It's 47 inches across, and has a 5.9mm thick profile.

The company is also showing off a bunch of AMOLED concepts for various functions, including televisions, a rather intriguing transparent display, and a 13.3-inch in-cell projected capacitive multi-touch notebook.

There's no word on when any of them might arrive outside of Japan, but as time marches on, we're sure we'll start seeing them arrive in this part of the world.

Alyce Santoro and Julio Cesar offer men's ties made from recycled cassette tapes. Rather than just offering retro - and eco - appeal, the ties have a very unusual feature.

Made from 50% tape cassette tape and 50% polyester thread, it seems the tape retains some audio information - at least enough to be played via a hand-made reader.

Google Maps Navigation for Android 2.0 will not just be setting the cat amongst the pigeons but is probably more akin to handing a rocket launcher to our feline friend as well. From demonstration, the turn by turn satnav system has got several advantages over traditional PND devices from the off but if you need convincing, hereare five reasons why you might want to try it and a few just to make you think again.

More accurate maps

One of the problems with satnav devices is that they often rely on outmoded maps usually either supplied by Tele Atlas or Navteq. The trouble is that, not only are these maps slightly inaccurate on purpose, but roads change quite frequently and theses companies can only send round cars to check once every 18 months or so. Recently Google started crowd sourcing corrections much as the OpenStreepMap project does, which means that the internet giant's atlas is going to be more accurate than on any other navigational device. Perhaps it's only a relatively small amount, but take into consideration the updates to way points and business addresses too and it becomes more important. Nothing more frustrating than to drive all the way to a museum to find it's closed or not even there any more.

Superior search

You don't have to just search for a destination or address but you've got the whole of Google's database to rely on for finding a place you want, and you're not going to find one on any PND as good as that. It's up to date and comprehensive and it'll even search specifically places along the corridor of your route. While most satnavs have a set number of way-points, this system will find you just about anything. If you're looking for a spanner on the way to fix your girlfriend's car, then it'll take you via the appropriate hardware store with just the one you need. Scarily, it's probably the ultimate on the move tool for stalkers for the same reasons too.

Voice Control

This is one of those areas that you really need to have tried out before we know whether it's a boon or not but, potentially, a voice activated satnav is a lot easier and a lot safer while drivers are supposed to be keeping their eyes on the road. You can use it just as you would a Google search and demand the same parameters, even if they're fairly vague - eg: cinema in East London that shows art house films. It'll then direct you to Rich Mix or Rio or any suggestion for the theatre you're after. Naturally, traffic noises, the radio, kids in the back or a poor mic on your handset could completely scupper this one but it's a nice idea. It did also seem to take the phone a little while to register in the demo video but at least it cuts down on finger work for long search enquiries.

More views

While traditional hardware satnavs recently added 3D views to their maps and a few landmarks too, these have only ever been in place for a limited number of roads and cities. GMN can offer a complete set of satellite maps with which you can zoom in to road level detail plus there's also Street View for a few parts of the world to offer drivers an exact picture of what the upcoming junction may look like. You might not use it all the time but that's one feature you just can't compete with.

Live traffic integration

We were calling for this one for years before the satnav companies finally linked up the traffic reports with route guidance to give us now, not only the shortest journey from A to B but also the fastest as well. The trick here for Google is the way they've shown it on the UI and the fact that it comes at no extra cost as well. The traffic view mode highlights sections of your route in either green, yellow or red depending on how heavy going the conditions are. If you're not happy with what you see, you can get the software to re-route for you.

It's free!

There's probably quite a bit of egg being wiped off TomTom's faces right now and, if there isn't, it's because the company must be too busy worrying just how it's going to convince consumers to pay the ?59 for the mobile app when it launches on Android. It might also tempt a few potential iPhone users away from the platform, but then we all know that that Apple logo doesn't come cheap. The fact is that whatever satnav hardware or other navigation mobile software manufacturers can offer - which is probably going to be a lot less than this Google package anyway - it's going to be next to impossible to beat them on price, and, as a race of thoroughbred cheapskates, that means a lot.

So, Google seems to be right on the money with this but it's not all roses. There could be a few problems with the software's implementation and practical use in the field. Most of them are centred around the age old issue of the software they can account for, but over the hardware that runs it, Google has a lot less control.

Sucks up battery

If you're using GMN on your Android phone then it's going to tear through the battery, which is massive issue as smartphones get smarter anyway. You'll have to find an adaptor for your 12V car socket or you can kiss goodbye to complete route guidance, let alone a day of actual phone use. This, of course, isn't so much of a problem with a traditional satnav. You're not going to need one of them to make a phone call after you get out of the car.

Small Screen

The very smallest satnavs have got 3-inch displays and many people prefer something around 5 inches for a decent route guider. There's not a lot of phones out there with that kind of pixel power and it's really a tablet that you're going to need to offer that kind of size.

Touchscreen trouble

The whole system is going to rely on a decent interface. Google can take care of one end but there's nothing more frustrating than a satnav with a dead touchscreen. This is not the kind of thing that'll make the GMN experience a joy. Pick the wrong phone and you might never use the service again. The same is true of the microphoneto to a lesser extent, but that would only affect the voice control feature.

Less of a navigational pedigree

Now, it might be that Google gets it bang on but TomTom, Navman and co have been practicing with their market for many years. There are touches in their systems like fuel counting and economy settings that don't appear to be part of GMN as it stands. Until we get a good look at the system, we're not going to know what else might have been missed out. Also, as far as commercial organisations go, it's a lot cheaper to buy their drivers PNDs than it is to fork out for Android handsets and educate their employees on how to use them.

Google has just thrown somewhat of a spanner in the works for satnav hardware and software companies as it has revealed it is to offer free turn-by-turn navigation functionality to its Maps product that will be offered in Android 2.0 devices.

"Maps Navigation" will debut in beta by default on all Android 2.0 devices and appears to offer a comprehensive satnav service that integrates Google's two very popular products, satellite and Street View, which could be used for the likes of lane guidance.

An Apple fanboy has hit back at Verizon's Droid Does teaser campaign, created to promote the soon to be officially revealed Motorola Droid handset by bashing the iPhone, with a home-made 'iDon't care" response.

The video, that's currently racked up over 100,000 views on YouTube, states "iDon't need a droid... unless it's R2D2", before ending "iCame first" in reference to the iPhone.

Eyemags has announced that it's launching new functionality that'll allow users to "install" its pages onto their iPhones and iPod touches. The app will let users save pages from the Eyemags mobile website onto their homescreens, like they were applications, and then access that content even when offline.

Those applications can be built by a web developer and can include HTML5 standards. Eyemags is saying that this allows developers to bypass Apple's lengthy approvals process if they're just building simple applications, billing it as "the peoples' app store".

It's free to create apps at the time of writing, but from 16 November a charge will be levied on publishers. A larger charge can also be applied if you want your app to be built into a more traditional "native" iPhone application. iPhone location games like Foursquare and Gowalla have one big drawback - you can't run them in the background. To "check in" at a location, you have to pull your phone out, connect to the Web, and then let the app do its thing.

But a new entrant to the space, Stalqer, has managed to sneakily hack the iPhone's email systems so that it can record you and your friends' locations in the background. The iPhone doesn't allow third-party apps to run in the background, so it's quite a feat that Stalqer has managed.

Here's how it works. The app sets up a secret email account on your device, and then monitors the iPhone's autocheck function. When it looks for new messages, the service inspects the POP or IMAP handshake, and particularly the IP address. That happens, apparently, every 15 minutes or so and the app then gets a location point.

There's also the option to check in manually on a Google map, and see your friends' locations. You can tie in your Facebook account, too, so that you can see where any friends who are also running the app are. Quite smartly, Stalqer can also show the location of friends who aren't signed up, grabbing public information off their profile like "City".

As you can imagine, the app comes with a plethora of privacy settings that give you fine-grained control over exactly who gets to see your location and when. Stalqer isn't monetized just yet - the company wants to see if people will go for it. It's not quite available yet, but has been submitted to Apple and you can sign up for an email when it's available.

So, Eclair has arrived, pretty much as we predicted. The SDK is now available to developers who want to build the next version - version 2.0 - of Android into their devices, as well as people who want to create apps for the platform.

Among the improvements will be email and contact syncing with multiple accounts from multiple sources, Exchange sync support, a combined inbox for those multiple email accounts, better calendar, improvements in address book UI, loads of camera improvements including flash, digital zoom and a macro mode, a better virtual keyboard, improved graphics, three-point multi-touch, a better browser and Bluetooth 2.1.

Some of those things, like the keyboard and exchange support, have been provided by device manufacturers building their own editions of Android, and some have been waiting in the wings for a while. Will these improvements bring bog-standard Android up to the same level that HTC took it to with its Sense add-ons?

We'll have to see when there are some phones available with it on.
