Apple has introduced Aperture 3, the next release of its photo editing and management software, for which it claims over 200 new features with the boast that "Aperture 3 makes it even easier and faster to organise large photo libraries".

These new features include "Faces, Places and Brushes" that build on the Faces and Places features introduced in iPhoto '09 while "Brushes" lets users paint image adjustments and effects onto parts of a photo, and "Adjustment Presets" applies professional photo effects "with just one click".

There's also "stunning" new slideshows that let you share your work by weaving together photos, audio, text and HD video, says Apple.

"Millions of people love using iPhoto to organise, edit and share their digital photos", said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior VP of worldwide product marketing.

"Aperture 3 is designed for both professionals who edit and manage massive libraries of photos and iPhoto users who want to take their photos further with easy-to-use tools such as Brushes and Adjustment Presets".

Aperture 3 is available through both the online and retail Apple Stores for ?169 while existing Aperture users can upgrade for ?79.

The Coolpix S570 arrived alongside the S640 and provides a simple to use, high-resolution snapper for the masses, but with some problems and some neat automated tricks up its sleeve.

Costing a quid shy of ?200, the S570 looks very nice (I had the silver liveried version) and comes with a 12-megapixel top resolution and a large 2.7-inch screen - though it lacks an optical viewfinder - as most such compacts tend to do today as their makers try to keep 'em small.

Billed by Nikon as a camera "perfect for parties, nights out holidays and more" it certainly boasts a high ISO setting if ISO 32,000 at full resolution. However and in practice, shooting at anything over ISO 400 the noise becomes visible and over 800, it's very intrusive, so shooting in low light at higher ISOs is possible, but you may not like what you see in the resulting images.

In terms of overall performance, the camera is also lacking some pizzazz. It's pretty slow to focus in all modes other than with the fixed, central AF point in use; face AF, manual and auto zone AF selection are all very slow to lock on, and even then they don't always get it right.

Switching to that central AF zone provides faster AF service but then of course you'll need to factor-in recomposition of off-centre subjects. The speed images are spooled off to the SD/SDHD card is also a little suspect as the camera will lock up for around one and a half seconds as it does so (more in continuous shooting sequences where you get a burst mode of around 1fps for as long as you press the shutter button) leaving you twiddling your thumbs and missing other potential shots, but that's all quite underwhelming at this price point. Okay, so enough of the problems.

On the plus side of the equation, the S570 looks great, its menu system is easy to follow and understand and the camera handles well, albeit we found the shutter button a little too sensitive.

The Intelligent automation system works, and automatically picks the "correct" scene before the camera and is pretty accurate and saves faffing about in the scene menus. The intelligent system selects between six scene modes that most closely fit your subject: portrait, night portrait, landscape, night landscape, close up or backlit subjects, which cover off most situations for everyday shooting.

There are also four electronic VR (Vibration Reduction) image "stabilisation" modes via a motion detection system that automatically controls shutter and ISO settings. But here issues with image noise can be come a problem as you lack control over the ISO.

Nikon's BSS (Best Shot Selector) is a help here as it will snap a series of sequential images and saves just the sharpest one from the sequence you've taken, which is great and can take some of the disappointment out of a fast sequence of events you're trying to shoot while trying not to miss the action and get a sharp shot.

We also like the Quick Retouch mode, this works rather well at improving the balance of contrast and saturation in images you've taken. It's simple to use and can add a touch of sparkle to some shots taken on, say, cloudy or dull days.

You still get 16 scene modes if you want to select from them, such as Beach and Snow, Food and Museum modes, as well as the usual settings such as Macro and Sports modes. Nikon's D-Lighting technology helps get detail out of shadow and highlights, without compromising either and there's a neat auto picture sorting system too, which helps get you to your favourite images on the card quickly and simply.

There's a generous helping of movie modes, four of them in fact. Two 640-pixel TV settings (one high quality, one standard) and ditto two lower resolution (PC/web oriented) 320-pixel movie options also with high and standard settings.

The S570's 5x optical zoom Nikkor lens gives a good maximum aperture range of F/2.7 to F/6.6 and the 24-140mm zoom range can encompass most typical subjects; the lens is crisp and compact, so keeping the camera small in use but giving the potential to pack in plenty of detail.

The two sections of the lens's slide-away protector, which should cover the lens when the camera is off, occasionally got stuck as the camera switched on, and that seems a little problematic as we had to fiddle to get it the darn thing open.

In terms of overall image quality, we've already mentioned about the high ISO noise problems, but with the sharp lens and very good white balance control (though slight orange casts can be visible in auto mode in mixed lighting) plus a natural colour performance at the default setting, these all help to get the most from shots where the camera is at its best: low ISO, bright conditions and static subjects.

Verdict:

And that's the problem here really. A fleet of foot snapper this is not, focus is slow and not always able to key on your subjects, be they backlit, normally lit or otherwise. In the darker situations you're likely to use the camera (parties, nights out and the like), focusing becomes more problematic, noise issue notwithstanding. And so, while this is by no means the worst compact we've reviewed -?and to be fair it is typical of such cameras -?at this price it is one of the most disappointing Nikon compacts we've reviewed, which is a shame.

Canon's latest PowerShot model is the?Canon PowerShot SX210 IS, which sports a 14-megapixel sensor and 14x optical zoom.

Not to be confused with the?IXUS 210, the new model beats the IXUS 210 in optical zoom stats, but doesn't feature a touchscreen display.

Regardless of model numbers, we've already managed to grab a hands-on with the new compact camera, announced just hours ago, that will come in an array of gold, silver, purple and black colours.

Like the new Canon IXUS 210, Canon has focused on bringing an array of interestin enhancements above and beyond just making sure you can just point and shoot.

Picture modes of note are the "miniature" mode that is a basic tilt shift effect - making everything look like your shooting a model image - and a fisheye lens option that you can adjust the strength of (low, medium and high).

Of course, for those that actually just want to take pictures you'll get a wink mode and smile mode that means the PowerShot 210 IS won't snap until it see the right action.

Video comes in the guise of 30fps 720p capture.

It has also retained the DIGIC4 image processing, optical image stabilization and 28mm wide-angle lens of the SX200.

What has been upgraded, however, is the 3-inch 16:9 display, which now offers higher contrast and increased visibility compared to its older brother.

The PowerShot SX210 IS will be showing up in March 2010, and will cost ?360.

Canon?has?announced its new spring collection in time for what would appear to be the almost defunct PMA show later in the month.

The new?Canon IXUS 210?will focus on bringing an array of interesting picture features and enhancements above and beyond, making sure you can just point and shoot.

All controlled via a capacitive touchscreen on the back, the display was responsive and easy to zip through the menus. Icon's are simply pressed to access things like ISO and even after a quick play we forgot that the camera lacked all the traditional buttons.?

Picture modes of note are the "miniature" mode that is a basic tilt shift effect - making everything look like you're shooting a model image - and a fisheye lens option that you can adjust the strength of (low, medium and high).

Of course, for those that just want to take pictures, you'll get a wink mode and smile mode that means the 210 won't take the picture until you make the right action.

Canon has just announced a new DSLR camera as part of its entry-level range of digital SLR cameras and Pocket-lint was on hand to grab a quick and dirty hands-on.

The new model, the Canon EOS 550D, will sport an 18-megapixel APS-C sensor and come with a number of cool features that go beyond the megapixel rush.

Those features include the ability to limit the ISO in auto mode - so you don't end up taking a batch of pictures that are too noisy - and a greater emphasis on movie shooting.

Now rather than having to work your way through a series of menus (by pressing the star button) you can access live view and auto focus with the press of a single dedicated button on the back.?

Other new tricks are greater control over frame rate and the ability to output straight into your TV via HDMI.

The new camera is expected to hit the shops in March and cost ?899 including an 18-55mm kit lens.

Following the official announcement of the new EOS 550D digital SLR, Canon has released what it calls a "walkthrough" video of the new snapper.

It's more an advert if we're honest, but if you are excited about the new HD DSLR then it's certainly worth a watch for footage of the gadget in the flesh, including some lingering shots showing the LCD and interface.

"Stills or movies, capture your story" seems the be Canon's tagline for the 550D which is capable of capturing Full HD video - at various FPSes.

Canon has announced the March launch of the new IXUS 130 and IXUS 105.

The IXUS 130 is Canon's slimmest IXUS model to date, measuring in at 17.8mm at its thickest point, with specs coming in with a 14-megapixel sensor, 28mm 4x zoom lens, a 2.7-inch LCD.

Other features of note include the ability to capture 720p video, an HDMI port, creative special effects options and Canon's new "Smart Shutter" features that include the ability to snap a pic with the wink of an eye.

The lesser specced IXUS 105 gets 12-megapixels, the same lens and LCD. It's due to be available in silver, brown, pink and aqua for ?189.

The IXUS 130 will cost you ?279 and it's due to be available in silver, black, orange and pink.

Canon has rolled out another model for the PowerShot range in the form of the SX210 IS - a superzoom with a 14.1-megapixel sensor. It's the replacement for the PowerShot SX200 IS.

As such, the specs have been boosted compared to its predecessor. A 12x zoom has become a 14x zoom. A 12.1-megapixel sensor has become a 14.1-megapixel sensor. 30fps 720p video recording has become... well, actually, it's still just 30fps 720p video recording.

It's also retained the DIGIC4 image processing, optical image stabilization and 28mm wide-angle lens of the SX200. What has been upgraded, however, is the 3-inch 16:9 display, which now offers higher contrast and increased visibility compared to its older brother.

There's a pile of smart scene detection tech, along with a smart flash exposure mode and motion sensors to work out exactly what the shutter speed should be in a given situation. It can detect up to 35 faces in each frame, and there's an option to wait for an extra face before taking the photo - for ease of self-photography.

It'll work with SD, SDHC and the massive SDXC memory cards, and it includes Eye-Fi functions if you plug in an Eye-Fi card. There's an HDMI port on the camera, and there's also 2GB of online image storage bundled in case you want to store your pictures on the Web.

The PowerShot SX210 IS will be showing up in March 2010, and will cost ?360.

Canon has announced the EOS 550D, the successor to its EOS 500D prosumer DSLR. It's received significant upgrades to several features but most notably, the sensor, movie shooting and metering have all seen a bump in specs.

Starting with the sensor, the 15.1-megapixel chip of the 500D has been raised to an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, which has Canon's DIGIC4 image processor onboard. That enables standard ISO settings of 100 - 6400, and there's also in-camera noise reduction for low-light shooting. A 14-bit image processing stage is included too, to smooth out colours and tonal gradation.

In terms of video recording, there's full 1920 x 1080p HD movie support at 30, 25 and 24fps. You can also shoot in 720p at 60 and 50fps. An external mic can be attached with the addition of a 3.5mm stereo jack, and exposure, depth of field and amount of motion blur can all be manually controlled. There's also a movie crop function, which zooms into the middle 640 x 480 pixel area of the sensor.

Then there's the metering. The EOS 550D contains the iFCL metering system that was first seen in the decidedly-pricier EOS 7D. You can now set the top limit for automatic ISO, to cut down on noise, and exposure compensation and bracketing can be set up to +/-5 and +/-2 stops respectively, allowing a bit of experimentation in tricky lighting conditions.

Elsewhere, there's a 9-point autofocus with an extra-sensitive cross-type point in the middle for very fast lenses, and 3.7fps continuous shooting if you hold down the shutter button. On the back, there's a 3-inch 3:2 LCD with 1040k dot resolution and an anti-reflective water-repellent coating.

Lastly, like its predecessor, there's an integrated HDMI port with the ability to control your pics with your remote on your massive flat panel TV, and a dedicated Eye-Fi section in the UI if you're a fan of the wireless transfer cards.

The camera will be available from 24 February 2010, but we've not seen any pricing in pounds - just a 829-euro body-only figure (Update: this is incorrect - see below). That translates to about ?725, but we'd expect that to go down a little pretty quickly, given the competition in the camera retail space.

Update: The body only will cost ?800, an 18-55mm ?f/3.5-5.6 IS lens kit bundled will cost ?900, an 18-135mm lens kit bundled costs ?1100 and you can get an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS & EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS double lens kit for ?1200. But as we say, we'd be surprised if you'd pay that much for it from your favourite reseller.

Canon has announced what it says is its most advanced touchscreen IXUS - the new IXUS 210.?

As well as navigate menu icons, the IXUS 210's 3.5-inch screen offers touch-to-focus functionality, image rotation, and finger swiping browsing through pics, while "Active Display" lets users browse through images by "tapping the sides of the camera".

The new compact gets a DIGIC 4 processor, 14.1-megapixel image sensor, a wide-angle 24mm Canon lens with 5x optical zoom, 720p video capture with easy YouTube uploads via the supplied software, an HDMI port, and a "sculpted metal exterior" finished in black, gold, silver or pink.

Features include image stabilisation, 22 scene modes, "Smart Flash Exposure", face detection that works for up to 35 faces and a fish-eye effect.

Worthy of special mention is a new "Smile Shutter" mode that uses face detection tech that means the user can trigger the shutter and take the pic with a smile, or with the "Wink Self-Timer", a wink of an eye which sounds like great fun, if it works.

With support for SDXC storage cards, offering up to 2TB of storage capacity, the Canon IXUS 210 will go on sale in March this year, priced at the ?350 mark.

This week's instalment of Pocket-lint and Megawhat's Tech Week in View show is fresh off the video editing suite and ready to go now for your viewing pleasure. As is customary each week, Stuart Miles takes the hot tech topics of the moment, chews 'em up, spits 'em out and tells you what he thinks.

This week under the Megawhat spotlight is pricing of ebooks - should digital issues cost the same as physical copies? Unsurprisingly it seems publishers think so and with the popularity of the Kindle and the iBooks-equipped iPad coming soon, it's a hot topic.

Elsewhere the iPad also gets hot (and steamy) with a gone-rogue Adobe employee suggesting in a blog post no Flash support means no online porn while Google gets hot under the collar about internet users clinging to Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6.

Finally there's a look at how Sky's 3D television debut went in the UK with the recent 3D football screening in nine UK pubs. Punters reported feeling dizzy, but whether that was the tech or the seven pints of lager they'd necked is yet to be determined... Hit play for more.

Sanyo has dropped word of a trio of camcorders that it'll soon be bringing to market. There's the VPC-GH2, VPC-CG102, and VPC-CG20. All three come with full 1080p video and up to 14-megapixel photo capability.

All three record onto SD, SDHC cards, and also support the massive SDXC cards that go up to 2TB in size. The GH2 and CG102 also have a "double-range zoom" feature that combines a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens to allow for one-button switching between different zoom ranges, upto 12X. The CG20's zoom lens goes to 5X.

The GH2 also has recording controls on both the front and back, which is presumably aimed at frequent YouTubers who want to record themselves. Content is recorded in?MPEG4, AVC/H.264 format, which combines video and audio into one file. They all pack mini-HDMI ports too.

All three will be arriving in March in the USA. The??VPC-GH2 and VPC-CG102 will cost $230, and the VPC-CG20 will cost $200. UK pricing and availability hasn't been announced, but we'll let you know the moment we hear anything.

Canon?could possibly launch a new camera or camcorder on Monday, Pocket-lint has learnt.

The camera company is holding an event at the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards in London on the 8 February titled "Canon at the movies".

The timing coincides with a plethora of announcements from other camera makers like Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Fujifilm, but also corresponds with rumours circling photo sites that the Japanese company could be about to launch the Canon Rebel T2i?in the US?and/or Canon 60D cameras.

According to rumours (via Canonrumours), the T2i spec list includes a new LCD, selectable fps settings in video mode, and a new build quality and shape for the Rebel range.

Meanwhile, a forum post on DPreview suggests an 18-megapixel 60D is on the cards. Its supposed spec sheet features 6.3fps, DIGIC IV processor and 24p/30p HD video recording modes (it lists 36fps, we are assuming a typo).

Canon declined to comment on the rumours when we phoned, however, did say that all its recent product launches would be on hand for us to play with.

When the Olympus Pen E-P1 flashed onto the scene in June last year, we knew we were looking at something special, not just from its distinctive looks, but also because it was so much fun to use. There were shortcomings, however, and the second coming moves to address some of those, significantly adding an accessories port on the back which most notably gives you the option of attaching an electronic viewfinder. (If you are interested in the E-P2, it is definitely worth reading our review of the E-P1 as well as this review.)

But the Micro Four Thirds landscape has changed rapidly over the last 6 months, most notably with the birth of the Panasonic Lumix GF1, which carried much of the same retro styling, but also packed in a pop-up flash, something that is still missing from this version of the Pen. Can the E-P2 compete, or has Panasonic stolen a march?

The Olympus Pen E-P2 brings a black colour scheme to the retro styling of the E-P1, with bold looks that you'll either love or loathe. Having hit the streets with both models of the new Pen, it seems that Olympus' styling gamble was worth it. People are drawn to the Pen and we think it looks cracking.

It measures 120.5 x 70 x 35mm, squeezing into that space the Micro Four Thirds occupies, somewhere between the dimensions of the largest compact cameras and the smallest DSLR cameras. Micro Four Thirds brings with it the benefits of interchangeable lenses with a larger Live MOS sensor, but leaves out the mirror block that would drive the optical viewfinder in a traditional DSLR. The result is a hybrid camera boasting great imaging quality, but reduced bulk.

The electronic viewfinder (EVF) is what should draw you to the E-P2, as previously you had to make do with the VF-1 optical viewfinder that married up with the 20mm pancake lens. This was one shortcomings we highlighted with the previous model. Now the VF-2 comes with the kit we tested here, including the 14-42mm zoom lens.

Switching between the EVF and the screen is simply a case of pressing the button on the back of the VF-2. It would have been nice if this was automatic, using a sensor, but it works well enough. The EVF gives you a live view display the same as you'd get on the 3-inch screen on the rear of the camera. That means you get all the same 100% field of view display, settings information, your aiming reticule, your image preview after you've taken a shot and so on. A dioptre ring allows adjustment to suit your vision.

You're probably used to snapping something, previewing, then putting the camera back up to your eye. Here you don't need to. Also, you can sit and view your photos or video through the EVF in playback mode, put if you are taking still shots on a tripod, remember to return to the live viewing, or you'll find yourself looking at the last picture you took of that scene, ahem, which did catch us out a couple of times.

The VF-2 is also jointed, so if you are lining up a low angle shot, or setting the camera up on the edge of a table, you can look down into it, rather than have to get behind. Some will never use this feature and it doesn’t have the same advantages as a swivel screen will in composing shots in tight situations, but it's a welcomed addition.

With the EVF in place, however, there is no way of attaching an external flash, which will immediately deter some buyers, making the Lumix GF1 a more compelling purchase. At the time of writing the new Olympus E-PL1 is waiting in the wings, which addresses some of these problems, which perhaps puts the E-P2 in an awkward position.

An accessory flash is available to purchase as extra as well as and external mic unit, for those that want to improve the quality of the sound they capture when shooting video.

Other headline specs remain the same as the E-P1, with a 12-megapixel (effective) Live MOS sensor and the option of JPEG and RAW shooting. It's easy to switch shooting aspect from the default 4:3 to 16:9 and various others, including square, for those that want to avoid the need to crop at a PC later.

Shooting modes on the dial sitting on the left-hand shoulder include i-Auto, aperture priority, shutter priority, manual, scene (with 19 presets on offer), video (offering 16:9 HD 720p capture at 30fps as AVI Motion JPEG), and finally Olympus' Art Filter setting.

The Art Filters see the addition of two extra options over the E-P1: Diorama and Cross Process. We like the Art Filters. Some might see them as a little gimmicky, but they are easy to access and can create some dramatic effects that would otherwise involve fiddling with a lot of settings, or some post-processing back at your PC. You can also apply Art Filters to an image you've already taken. The downside is that when shooting with a Filter on, image processing does slow things down.

Controls presented on the E-P2 offer direct access to settings such as exposure compensation, exposure and focusing locks, ISO, focusing mode, self timer and white balance. An additional Fn button can be custom set to a range of functions depending on your preference, so you can use it to toggle manual focus, for example.

Other setting controls can be accessed by pressing OK on the back and entering a shortcut menu that scrolls down the side of the display. It means you can dive into settings like image stabilisation quickly and easily as conditions change. Some of the more advanced settings hide under the menu proper (via the Menu button), with an additional "Settings" area that needs to be manual enabled to define some of the characteristics of the camera that are otherwise inaccessible.

As we found with the E-P1, the E-P2 is a great performer. Metering and white balance seemed spot-on in our tests. Focusing is perhaps the weakness, as we found that left to its own devices the E-P2 would find something just off the subject to focus on. There are various focus modes to try: AF, continuous AF, manual and a combination which allows you to manually tweak after autofocus has picked its target. Manual focus automatically brings up a zoomed area for you to confirm your subject is in focus and it works here nicely.

There are 11 focusing zones too and the face detection is rather good at making sure the people are in focus, if that's your aim. We definitely think it is worth exploring the focusing options in more detail, as we weren't always entirely happy with the default options.

The ISO range runs up to 6400 and it gets noisy around ISO 1600, not always to the detriment of the photo, but you will find that some fine detail starts to disappear from here upwards. You can elect to set a maximum normal shooting range for Auto ISO with 1600 being the default. You aren't shown the ISO level in the display in Auto mode, but quick access through the shortcut menu will let you see the exposure setting for your scene as you move through the ISO range, which is helpful for deciding whether to hand-hold those low-light shots, or find support. In-camera image stabilisation offers 3 levels to increase handholdability.

Movie shooting has always impressed us with the new Pens. The 720p video capture produces great quality video, even in lower light conditions and you can apply the Art Filters if you like, but you also get manual and aperture priority shooting modes, giving you plenty of creative scope. You can opt for image stabilisation in video as well. Different focusing modes apply to video too, so you can have continuous focus, or manual if you want to try your hand at some detailed focus pulls if you are feeling adventurous. It's a shame that the AVI Motion JPEG format is limited to 7 minutes, but that keeps file sizes in check which leads to easier editing later.

The battery lives in the bottom with the SD card and will give you around 300 shots.

Verdict:

The Olympus Pen E-P2 is a wonderful little camera and you can't help feeling that this is the camera the E-P1 should have been. Even though we loved the E-P1, the additions to the E-P2 make it even more compelling; those who have invested in the E-P1 are probably now kicking themselves that they didn't wait around a little longer.

The fight between Olympus and Panasonic is set to run on and the E-P2 squares up nicely against the GF1. The big attraction of the GF1 is the snappy autofocus and the onboard flash, the E-P2 has the edge on design - it looks better - and we think is more fun to use.

The E-P2 comes in three options to buy - body only (?849), 17mm pancake kit (?949), and the 14-42mm zoom kit (?899), all prices RRP. The E-P1 (14-42mm zoom kit) can be yours for around ?699, while the Lumix GF1 is now available for around ?650 (although the viewfinder is an extra ?160) so once you take online discounts into account, it's a fairly close call.

If the Micro Four Thirds camera system appeals to you, then you'll love the quality and handling that the E-P2 has on offer. The range of options is impressive, whether you are a novice attracted to the design, or an enthusiast looking for a more compact camera with plenty of creative control. Whichever you are, the E-P2 is immense fun to use, if a little pricey.

Olympus?launched its "budget"?Micro Four Thirds?camera on Wednesday and Pocket-lint was on hand (in a coffee shop) to bring you the low down on the third instalment in Olympus' "hybrid" Pen range.

The new model, which swaps metal for plastic, will cost ?549 in the UK but comes with a 14 to 42mm kit lens and the promise that you'll look "Kevin Spacey" cool.

Specs include an Olympus TruePic V Image Processor, 12.3-megapixel Live Mos sensor, a 2.7-inch LCD and a direct video record button on the back of the camera for capturing HD film footage.

The?Olympus Pen E-PL1?gets 19 shooting modes and various arty special effects with a Live Guide to help preview the result, face detection, panorama options and an image stabiliser.

What that means in the hand is a rather large, but equally capable, camera that will let you shoot in a variety of different environments without you having to mention "single lens reflex" once.

In fact, aimed at complete newbies to digital photography, the camera even goes that one stage further in de-mystifying common jargon like white balance, aperture, shutter speed, colour hue and saturation, with easy to understand terminology and sliding graphs for the non-photography geek within you.

Yes there is a retro feel to the model, but then that's what you expect from Olympus and the Pen range.?

Expected in March, the camera will cost ?549 in the UK or $599 in the US.

Ricoh has announced a new compact - the CX3 - a new digi-cam that boasts a back-illuminated 10-megapixel CMOS sensor that is said -along with a noise reduction algorithm - to significantly increase shooting performance in low-light scenes.

With a 10.7x (equivalent to 28-300mm on a 35mm SLR) optical wide-angle zoom lens, the 29.4mm thick camera boasts a new "scene auto mode" that will auto-change settings to suit for point-and-shoot ease of use.

The CX3 also sees the addition of a 1280 ? 720 HD movie function and a new "pets" scene mode that turns off sounds and flash so as not to startle the little critters and offers priority in focusing for a cat's face when one is detected (sorry canine chums - you don't get a mention).

Other features include 5-frames-per-second max resolution stills shooting, a 3-inch LCD display, SDHC memory card support up to 32 GB and various manual and special effect options.

The Ricoh CX3 will be available "shortly" price at ?299.99.

As well as the S8000 and the S3000, Nikon has announced the introduction of new models into its Coolpix compact range with the S4000, P100, L110, L21 and L22 claiming "something for everyone".

The P100 "bridge camera" boasts a wide angle 26x zoom NIKKOR lens, a 10.3-megapixel resolution, Full 1080p HD movie recording with stereo sound, a 3-inch vari-angle LCD display and five anti-blur settings. Due in mid-march in black only, the P100 is priced at ?349.99.

The S4000 is a 12-megapixel effort with a 3-inch touchscreen display that offers a "Touch Shutter" to take a picture as well as a stylus for in-camera editing. Features include HD (we presume 720p) video recording, a wide angle 4x zoom NIKKOR lens, and four blur-reduction functions. Due to be available in black, pink and gloss red prices for the S4000 is to be confirmed.

The 12.1-megapixel "all-rounder" Coolpix L110 boasts a wide angle 15x zoom NIKKOR lens, HD movie capture with stereo sound, a 3-inch LCD, five anti-blur functions, an ergonomic grip, 1cm macro and 15 scene modes. Battery-powered, the L110 will be available in black and wine red in Feb for ?199.99.

Finally, the "fun and affordable" L21 and L22 go on sale this month for ?69.99 and ?79.99 and are battery-powered point and shooters.

Measuring in at 27.3mm thin, the S8000 offers 14.2 megapixels, a fast start-up time and what Nikon claims is a DSLR class AF system.

With a 3-inch LCD display, it also boasts a dedicated video button for recording 720p movies with stereo sound at 30 frames per second.

Olympus' new micro four thirds PEN has been outed in the States ahead of its official launch that was complete with obligatory teaser campaign.

As we predicted, the new model enters the PEN range at the consumer end with a $600 price tag and some user-friendly additions, such as a pop-up flash. ?

"This third-generation PEN is built for shutterbugs who always wanted better pictures and considered a DSLR, but were intimidated by the bulky size and complex interface", says Olympus.

Specs include an Olympus TruePic V Image Processor, 12.3-megapixel LIVE Mos sensor, a 2.7-inch LCD and a direct video record button on the back of the camera for capturing HD film footage.

The E-PL1 gets 19 shooting modes and various arty special effects with a Live Guide to help preview the result, face detection, panorama options and an image stabiliser.

Offered with a variety of lenses, and boasting the "same PEN DNA" as previous models, although arguably slightly less retro-looking, the E-PL1 will be available in March in the States in black, slate blue and champagne gold with a 14-42mm f3.5/5.6 lens for $599.99.

A summary of recent internet suppositions and rumour stories suggests that Apple will offer a more Mac-like iPad 2 and that the first-gen iPad - yet to launch - may well do so with a camera option.

Taking the imaging element, Mission:Repair reports, on receipt of iPad parts, that the device's metal frame has a hole in it that a MacBook's iSight camera slots into exactly.

Add this to the 3.2 version of the iPhone OS referencing video calls and a blurry screengrab of Jobs' iPad presentation seemingly showing his iPad with a camera hole as well as speculation hitting hard and fast that Apple may yet announce a version of the iPad with a camera, if not reveal it as a bonus feature before launch.

Meanwhile, TechCrunch reports "Apple is pretty far along on work on second tablet device. A bigger one. And this one may be much more like a Mac than an iPhone", which would please those hoping for a tablet offering Leopard rather than apps.

Fujifilm has announced its "spring collection" of compact digital cameras across three ranges offering more budget choices for consumers than its feature offerings.

New to the S Series, the FinePix S1600, S1800 and S2500HD are described as compact and lightweight, 12-megapixel digital cameras with powerful Fujinon long-zoom lenses.

Battery-powered, all models offer a 3-inch LCD, various shooting modes, face detection with blink and smile modes and 720p video capture while the S1600 gets a 15x zoom and the two other models 18x.

There are four new models for the JV and JZ Series - the FinePix JV100/150 and JX200/250 boasting slimline dimensions of less than 19mm and a metal body at what's said to be an affordable price.

Basic specs are 12-megapixels and 3x zoom for the JV100, 14-megapixels and 3x zoom for the JV150, 12-megapixels and 5x zoom for the JX200 and 12-megapixels and 5x zoom for the JX250.

All models offer 720p video capture, a 2.7-inch LCD display and will be available in black, silver and pink.

The A Series ("point and shoot simplicity perfect for people who are investing in their first digital camera")? sees the launch of the AV100 and AX280.

The 12-megapixel AV100 boasts a 3x Fujinon zoom, whilst the 14-megapixel AX280 features a Fujinon 5x, 28mm wide-angle zoom lens.

There's no news on pricing or availability for any of the new cameras.

Based on Fujifilm's Super CCD EXR tech, as seen in the F70EXR, the camera co has announced the launch of two new EXR models - the FinePix F80EXR and the FinePix Z700EXR.

The F80EXR offers a 12-megapixel sensor, 10x optical zoom (equivalent to 27mm-270mm), a 3-inch LCD, 720p HD movie capture, face recognition, auto picture rotation - and, wait for it - Pet Detection mode.

Claiming to help you take "great pics of your pets" the mode will "recognise" your cat or dog (sorry, but no other furry friends are included) and will prioritise shooting conditions (focus, exposure, etc) to get a good snap of your pet over any one else in the frame.

Also offering pet-spotting abilities, the Z700EXR is slim at 16.7mm and boasts a "cool 'Z' motif" that lights up when the camera is in operation.

The Z700EXR's big selling point is its 3.5-inch touchscreen display that lets users take and view photos at the touch of a finger.

Specs include a 12-megapixel sensor, 5x zoom lens, 720p video and Fuji's new easy web upload functionality that offers shortcut options (via a PC) to upload to Facebook and YouTube.

Fujifilm has updated the FinePix Z35 with the announcement of the coming soon FinePix Z70 that offers what's claimed to be easy web uploads.

Aimed at the "fashion conscious" after a bit of "modern day functionality"
the Z70 lets users "mark" a picture for Facebook or YouTube upload in camera, then, once connected to a PC, the MyFinePix Studio software will transfer the pics to the sites at the press of a button.

Specs-wise you're looking at a 12-megapixel resolution, a Fujinon 5x optical zoom, HD recording (we presume 720p) and a 2.7-inch LCD.

Complete with LED illuminated keys (ideal for party-goers) the Z70 will be available in both "male and female colours" which is interesting, as we hadn't realised such distinctions exist in the "modern day", as Fuji calls it.

Fujifilm has joined the ranks of camera manufacturers offering rugged options with the announcement of the FinePix XP10.

A "born survivor", the XP10 offers a 12-megapixel resolution, 5x Fujinon lens, 720p HD video capture and a 2.7-inch LCD display.

The XP10 is waterproof to 3 metres, shockproof to 1 metre, freezeproof to -10 degrees C and dustproof too.

With the boast that it's better looking than some other rugged options out there, the XP10 gets a sleek and slim metal body and will be available in silver, black and blue.

One stand-out feature is the new Facebook/YouTube "Easy Web Upload" function that means users can mark images and vids in camera for quick one-press upload to the social sites once they hook up to a PC.

Fujifilm has joined Olympus in offering a compact camera with a 30x zoom lens (equivalent to 24-720mm on a 35mm SLR) with the new HS10 bridge camera that claims to offer SLR-like handling.

The HS10 offers a 10-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 3-inch tilting LCD and full HD 1080p movie capture with stereo sound (with mini HDMI output) leading to the claim it's a great "all in one" option for prosumers.

With a ton of auto as well as manual options, the HS10 boasts 10 frames-per-second shooting, RAW capture and triple image stabilisation.

One interesting feature of note is the new "Motion Remover Mode" that captures five images of a scene in quick succession, the five images are then analysed and combined in-camera to produce a single image where anything moving in the scene has magically disappeared. "Never before has capturing postcard-quality shots of tourist traps - without the tourists - been so easy", says Fujifilm.

That SLR handling comes in with a large command dial, manual focus ring, twist and zoom lens barrel, electronic viewfinder, tilting LCD screen and deep hand grip.

Pricing and availability has not been revealed for the UK market, although US sources are reporting a March launch for around $500.

Claiming to be "scaling new heights in the compact market", Olympus has announced two new models for its ultra-zoom camera series.

Equipped with a "staggering" 30x wide optical zoom covering the equivalent 28-840mm focal length, the 14-megapixel SP-800UZ will appeal to twitchers across the UK.

The zoomy compact boasts a 16:9, 3-inch LCD, 2GB internal memory plus SD card slot, HD movie and HDMI tech, dual image stabilisation and 10fps sequence shooting.

The SP-600UZ offers lesser specs at 15x optical zoom (28-420mm equivalent), a 2.7-inch LCD, 1GB internal memory and a 12-megapixel resolution.

The Olympus SP-800UZ and SP-600UZ will be available in "titanium silver" from March 2010 for a retail price of ?369.99 and ?259.99 respectively.

Both 14-megapixel options, the new Toughs offer 5x optical zoom, HD movie recording and an HDMI output, take SD cards and boast 2.7-inch LCD displays.

Other features include built-in dual image stabilisation, various shooting modes, face detection and a 2GB internal memory.

Those tough specs come in with the ability to withstand temps down to -10 degrees C, waterproofing to 10 metres, shockproofing to 2 metres while the 8010 gets a manometer pressure meter - handy for divers.

Due to be available in a variety of colours, the two new Toughs will be available to buy from March 2010 for a retail price of ?399.99 and ?319.99.

The?Pentax Optio I-10?is the latest compact camera to come out from?Pentax?and stands out from the crowd not because of a higher than average megapixel count, or smile technology, but because it offers a retro design similar to Pentax's Auto 110 film camera. But can the camera that takes its heritage from yesteryear perform today? We were able to take it for a quick spin for a First Look review.

As not to mislead, this First Look impression is based on a pre-production sample sent to us by Pentax. While the handling, form factor and general performance of the camera are finalised, the image processing elements are still being worked on we are told. On the two models (a white version and black version) sent to us, the video capture feature wasn't working for example, and we noticed blips in the performance of the rear display.

Those caveats aside, that doesn't stop us telling you about the design and the feel of the camera.?It's light in weight to hold (approx 140 grams with battery), while that retro feel certainly stands it apart from most of the compact cameras on the market today gunning for a compact, slim, feel.

The front of the I-10 boasts a large lens that offers a 5x F/3.5-5.9 optical zoom and further digital zoom qualities beyond that. In reality that gives you the equivalent of a 28-140mm in 35mm speak. The digital zoom (which we always recommend against using) offers a 6.25x zoom giving you a possible total 31.3x if you are willing to forgo image quality.

Above the lens is the flash (rather than to the side) and whether it's down to the handgrip or the mottled pattern layered over the camera, Pentax has successfully carried off the look they were after. Old meets new has been finely balanced.

Around the back you get a 2.7-inch LCD screen sporting a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio that gives you plenty of scope for seeing what you are doing. There is no electronic or optical viewfinder; the raised flash housing might make you expect one, but whether you need it or not comes down to personal preference.

Unfortunately if you opt to shoot at the highest resolution (12 megapixels) you won't be able to benefit from the screen's 16:9 aspect, with "widescreen" shooting coming in at 9 megapixels.?Shooting in 12 megapixels means a black box down the left hand side is automatically filled with data like battery life, what scene mode you are in, whether face detection or smile mode is on, and how many shots you've got left, leaving your camera shot free of clutter. In other shooting modes this information is overlaid, but we like the fact that Pentax didn't choose to put black bars either side of the image, as is often the case, so it looks nice and tidy.

To the right of the screen is the usual array of quick link buttons, nothing unusual there, and the on/off switch, shutter and zoom controls are found on the right hand shoulder. The left hand shoulder sports a finger grip and the zoom ring sits around the shutter button. Usually you'll find the zoom ring on a compact camera has a knurled grip on the front, here it doesn't - it faces you rather than away from you, which takes some getting used to.

As with previous Pentax models, the "Green" auto shooting mode will automatically choose the best option for you and let you get on with snapping the pictures.?Those that want some control can opt for the specific scene from 24 on offer and here they range from fireworks, to parties to pets.?Opting for the pets mode for example allows you to register your pets into the camera so it can then detect their faces in future photographs and make sure they are in focus.

You also get CCD-shift Shake Reduction, which can be used on both stills and video. The video is capable of shooting HD 720p although as we've already said we weren't able to test this on our First Look play.

As for connections, there isn't HDMI or a dedicated TV out, although a USB cable in the box will allow you to output to a TV via NTSC or PAL.?The battery and SD card slot can be found on the bottom. It's a slide and lock mechanism that won't give you any problems and should hold up to the test of time.

The menu's are basic in their approach, easy to understand, however from a graphical point of view not as smooth and styled as some of the camera interfaces out there. Everything is easy to find and we had no problems with them.

Overall the camera was quick to respond with plenty of options to suit most compact camera users. We will hold further judgement on photo quality when we get a full working model, although have included some shots to give you an idea.

Verdict:

The Pentax I-10 looks to offer you the usual Pentax compact camera capabilities in a rather eye-catching retro design. People we showed it too thought that it looked "cute" and rather "fun", however we also got questions as to whether it was a DSLR (due the styling) and if it was more powerful than a regular compact.

That perception, mainly inspired by companies like Olympus and Panasonic with the Micro Four Thirds cameras (such as the Pen E-P1 and Lumix GF1), might mislead some at first glance.?This is, and Pentax makes no claims otherwise, a standard compact digital camera in a funky retro body.?

We'll be looking at the performance and image quality in more detail when we get a retail version of the camera in for review.

Photography is all about light. So,getting a decent shot when there's very little to play with is always going to be a tricky task. If you're a professional photographer or a keen enthusiast you'll know about this already and you'll probably have all the right equipment for the job - a camera with a top end sensor and some super fast lenses to strap on when needed.

On the other hand, if you're a point and press kind of person, then you'll have been stuck with the flash until now and if you haven't already realised that the flash is your enemy, then it's doubly important that you read on.

The flash is a great device for offering enough light for an image where there was none before, but it's rather like using a hammer to crack a walnut. It floods the scene with a strong blinding light from one very localised source. So, as the user, what you'll most often notice is that everything in the foreground is super bright and often over-exposed while the background is pitch black.

Chances are you'll also have some pretty bizarre looking shadows and the colours of what's there will be off as well. That's just how it goes with compact cameras. Start using a dedicated flash on an SLR and you can use the technique to your advantage for some really good effects but that's an article for another time. So, if you've got a compact camera and you want take better photos at night or indoors, then take a deep breath, turn the dial away from Auto mode and try the tips below.

1) Low Light/Night Modes

Before we delve deeper into the camera menus, the scene modes are a good place to start. Thankfully most cameras these days have an intelligent scene setting, which most people keep on, and it should detect the fact that you're trying to take a night shot. But, just in case it doesn't work it out, it's worth switching it to Night Mode yourself. You'll probably still get a flash and not quite what you're after but it's a step in the right direction.

Better cameras will have a Low Light mode which is preferable. It'll turn the flash off and automatically pick the appropriate shutter speeds, aperture, ISO and other things that you might not want to worry about, but what it'll also hopefully do is a rather clever technique called "pixel binning". This is where each pixel detector on your image sensor gets together in groups of four to produce super-pixels with much higher sensitivities to low light. That means you'll get excellent, bright looking shots even in dark conditions.

The downside is that the resolution will drop by a factor of four. So, your 10-megapixel shots can now only have a maximum of 2.5 megapixels worth of resolution. However, do not be afraid of this. It's far, far better to have a good looking lower res shot than a rubbish bigger one. Besides, 2.5-megapixel resolution is enough to get a 5 x 7-inch print and will still be more than enough for any digital snaps shown off on your computer screen. In fact, that's almost a bonus tip in itself - don't worry about the resolution with low light photography. It's always worth sacrificing it for a decent exposure.

2) Image Stabilisation to maximum

One thing that your compact camera will need to do once you turn the flash off is to leave the shutter open for as long as possible when you take each shot. What it's trying to do is ensure that as much light gets to the sensor as possible. The tricky part is that any movement you make during these longer shots - which can take up to a matter of seconds - will cause a blurring of the photo and that's no good to anyone unless it happens to look quite pretty.

What you're normally told, if you're fixing all the settings yourself, is that you shouldn't set the shutter speed any slower than 1/60th of a second. The reason being that it's very hard for us humans to stay perfectly still for any longer. Smaller shakes in our camera holding hands start to show up if the shots take any longer than that. You can normally squeeze that down to 1/30th of a second if you hold your arms in tight, prop yourself up against a wall, breathe out and then press the shutter release, but that's about as long an exposure as you can get without using a tripod.

However, all good modern compacts these days come with image stabilisation which will either be called IS, OIS (optical image stabilisation) or even anti-shake mode or such like. What these do is compensate for our human shaky hands with lots of clever techniques and algorithms that the camera processor will use. The upshot is that we can slow down the shutter even further without the risk of blur. As a result, you can now get it down towards 1/4 of a second and, if the camera is particularly good, even beyond. That alone will buy a huge chunk of exposure and already offer much better pictures. So, seek out all these modes in your camera menus and turn them up to maximum.

3) No Zoom

It's all about available aperture here but all you need to know is that when you zoom in, you start reducing the amount of light you can let into the camera at any one time. If you can mess around with the aperture settings, you'll notice the maximum size (smallest number available) will be selectable as opposed to when you are zoomed in and it's not.

In the same way, if you look at telephoto lenses for SLR cameras, you'll notice that the available f-stop is a range from a low number to a higher one, indicating that it gets slower - and so less sensitive to light - the more you zoom into your subject.

But ignore all the confusion. Just appreciate that you want to be pulled right back on your compact camera for taking better photos in low light conditions. So, no zoom. Capiche?

4) Check your ISO

If you're taking your camera settings off piste, then there's a good chance that it might stop automatically choosing your ISO for you. So, if you're after results, then make sure you go into the menus, find your ISO and put it right up as high as it can go. In fact, even if it's on Auto just choose the highest setting anyway.

For those unaware, the ISO relates to how sensitive your camera is to light. The only danger with taking it to the top is that you might start to get some noise on your shots - lack of clarity and even the odd artifact. But, the fact is of course, that when looking for results in extreme conditions, we're lucky to get something with a decent exposure. You can worry about the noise another time.

5) Go Manual

A lot of compact cameras are coming out these days with manual modes. Even if you're not really used to SLR photography or don't know too much about aperture and shutter speeds, don't be afraid giving this mode a crack. To put it very briefly, for low light conditions, you want to make the aperture large and the shutter speed long.

In practical terms, that means low numbers for both settings but, again, you don't really need to worry because most compacts that allow you to change these will show you how you're affecting the look of the shot on their LCD screens before you even take it.

So you don't even really need to know what you're doing. Just turn the dials until it looks right. If you get yourself into a pickle - and you won't - you can always go into the menu and hit the reset button which will have all the camera settings back to automatic and as you had them before you started messing around.

Conclusions

At the end of the day, you'll get better results with a better camera. A Boots' own point and press you picked up for ?30 isn't going to give you the same flexibility as a Nikon P6000, but that doesn't mean you can't push what you have a little further than you already do. If you're still not happy with what your compact offers, then buy a new one with a better sensor, higher ISO range, f2.0 lens and, ideally, low light shooting and manual modes. If that's not enough, then go and pick up a DSLR and a f1.4 lens and you'll be able to shoot just about anything you like.

A few decent compacts to watch out for would be the Canon PowerShot range, particularly the S90, and then up to the G10 and G11. The Panasonic Lumix TZ series will do the job, as will the slightly bulkier FZs - any of the Nikon P-series Coolpix offers the right kind of flexibility and the Fujifilm FinePix F70 EXR is a fantastic option for those on a budget. All the shots on this page and the next were taken with a Canon Powershot S90 out in London's East End at night.

Canon has introduced new printers with the launch of one "stylish and easy-to-use" home printer and three new all-in-ones for the small office slash home office.

With a compact design, the PIXMA iP2702 is angled at the home user and offers document and photo printing using Canon's "FINE" tech with printing at resolutions of up to 4800 x 1200dpi.

Compatible with "Easy-PhotoPrint EX" software, printing a 10 x 15cm borderless photo is said to take 55 seconds, while printing from the Web is said to be made easier as it can "clip" part of a webpage for targeted printing.

The all-in-ones are the PIXMA MX870, PIXMA MX350 and PIXMA MX340. Offering printing, scanning, copying and faxing functionality, these models also offer Canon's FINE tech as well as Wi-Fi in all three models.

Stand out features include the ability to save faxes to the internal memory and then store to a USB key as PDF - handy if your ink or paper has run out - and the option to print images directly from PictBridge, iPhone and Bluetooth devices (with an adapter) while the MX870 and MX350 can also print photos from USB drives and memory cards.

All models are due to be available in March with pricing at ?45 for iP2702, ?199 for the MX870, ?149 for the MX350 and ?99 for the MX340.

Olympus has started a teaser campaign for a new camera on its US site with what looks like another retro-styled model hidden behind a hand.

To be found under the "coming soon" section and with the line "You can't hide INNOVATION" we've no clue as to what the hand might one day move away to reveal, but as PMA, the photography trade event, is due to take place in the US in February, it could be a big launch.

The retro looks that can be peeked between the fingers suggest another micro four thirds model into the Pen range, but as the new and improved (and expensive) E-P2 only goes on sale this month, maybe this is a lower end model to appeal to a wider consumer audience.

Pentax's latest camera offering, the?Pentax Optio I-10,?is a rather retro-looking compact camera that pays homage to the classic DSLR shape, but without any DSLR features.

Just 2 days after its official announcement we've already got back in time to grab one so you can see what it's all about.

Looking cute and miniature, the styling really is DSLR all over without the camera actually offering any DSLR or hybrid like features.

Available in black or white, the camera will offer a 12-megapixel sensor and sport a 5x optical zoom (equivalent to a 28mm wide angle to 140mm telephoto lens).

Although the I-10 looks like a DSLR camera, it's far from it, nor will it attempt to take on the new range of "hybrid" models from Olympus, Panasonic or Samsung, instead promising a range of AF and AE features in the guise of face recognition to beat all face recognition systems.

The Pentax Optio I-10 is expected in February priced at ?199.99.

In the hand it's very light with some we showed questioning whether it was even a real camera.

Other interesting bits to point out are that the image isn't displayed on the whole of the widescreen display at the back and that, strange as it might be, the zoom toggle faces you rather than being on the front of the camera.

We're going to be having a further play with the camera and grabbing some test shots over the next couple of days, hopefully when the weather gets better.

What's being described as the first commercially produced camera is due to go under the hammer at an Austrian auction house in May of this year. Expected to sell for between 500,000 and 700,000 euros it's one pricey snapper with that cost converting to between ?433,000 and ?607,000 in proper money.

The camera in question is the "Giroux Daguerreotype" found recently in a private home in Germany. Said to be in "outstanding original condition" despite its 170 years, it's offered complete with the original manual from 1839.

"The wooden sliding-box camera was made in Paris in September 1839 by Alphonse Giroux, Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre's brother-in-law. Daguerre, the inventor of the first practicable photographic process, signed the camera to verify its authenticity", says the WestLicht Photographica auction house.

Only very few of these cameras are known to exist worldwide and all of those are in public museum collections.

As well as a new rugged option, Panasonic has introduced the Lumix DMC-ZS7, the Lumix DMC-ZS5 and the Lumix DMC-ZR3 digital compact cameras.

The new ZS7 gets a 25mm ultra-wide-angle Leica lens, 12x optical zoom, 12.1 megapixels and a new built-in GPS feature that embeds photos and videos with location details.

With a 3-inch display it offers HD video recording in the AVCHD Lite format, with a dedicated video record button and a new manual shooting mode.

The Lumix DMC-ZS5 gets the same lens and zoom but a 2.7-inch LCD, video recording in Motion JPG at 30fps and does not include GPS capabilities.

Finally, the Lumix DMC-ZR3 is described as a fully-featured digital camera complete with AVCHD Lite HD video recording, a 25mm ultra-wide-angle Leica lens and 8x optical zoom in a slimline body of around an inch thick.

Pricing and availability for all models is to be confirmed nearer to their actual availability.

In the States Panasonic has announced the launch of the new Lumix DMC-TS2, the next-gen model of the TS1, said to be "designed for active outdoor use".

Featuring AVCHD Lite format video recording, the 14.1-megapixel TS2 is said to "strengthen its toughness" compared to its predecessor and is waterproof to 33 feet, 10 metres, shockproof to 10 feet, or 2 metres, freezeproof to -10-degrees C and dustproof.

Boasting an airtight body protected against water immersion, dust and sand, the TS2 gets rubber padding and reinforced glass and carbon inside the camera, a thicker LCD display and an optional silicon jacket to protect its exterior from scratches.

Specs include a 28mm wide-angle Leica lens, 4.6x optical zoom, 2.7-inch display and a built-in LED light while features include quick auto focus and shutter release time, image stabilisation and face recognition.

One shooting mode we think is worthy of mention is the new "Happy Mode" which Panasonic says "optimises colour, saturation and brightness to make both photo and video more vivid and true to the colour the users remember when they took it".

Due to be available in silver, blue, orange and yellow, pricing and availability will only be announced "30 days prior to shipping date", says Panasonic, so presumably it's at least a month away from hitting shop shelves.

Pentax?has confirmed the launch of a retro designed SLR shaped digital compact camera called the Optio I-10.

The device, which takes its cue from Olympus' Pen E-P1, will offer a white retro case, offer a 12-megapixel sensor and sport a 5x optical zoom (equivalent to a 28mm wide angle to 140mm telephoto lens).

Although the I-10 looks like a DSLR camera, it's far from it, nor will it attempt to take on the new range of "hybrid" models from Olympus, Panasonic or Samsung, instead promising a range of AF and AE features in the guise of face recognition to beat all face recognition systems.

According to Pentax, the new camera "accurately detects up to 32 faces" in the image field, and in addition to being able to detect small faces (presumably kids) it will also be able to register up to three dog or cat faces too for the LOL CAT moments and automatically optimise focus and exposure.

The user can even program the camera to automatically release the shutter the moment the subject’s face turns straight towards the camera.

Video recording comes in the way of 720p at a frame rate of 30 frames per second.

The Pentax Optio I-10 is expected in February priced at ?199.99.

The company also announced the H90 "a?compact, lightweight, “no frills” digital compact camera priced at ?129.99, and the E90, also an?entry-class digital compact camera, featuring an upgraded Smile Capture function and simple, user-friendly operation. It will cost just ?79.99.

The?Samsung NX10?hopes to capitalise on the headway hybrid cameras like the Panasonic Lumix GF1 and Olympus Pen E-P1 hybrid models have made, bridging the gap between a compact camera and a standard regular DSLR model. But has Samsung cracked it with the NX10? We managed to get a brief hands-on look with the new model at both the US and UK launch events.

The premise of this and other "hybrid" models is incredibly simple - people want the ability to take better pictures without having to lug around a bulky DSLR model that is unlikely to fit in their bag let alone their pocket.

Using some clever smoke and mirrors (or not as the case may be) Samsung, like Panasonic and Olympus, has removed the single lens reflex element allowing for a smaller body and one that is almost half the thickness of the company's now defunct GX20 DSLR model.?In real terms that's 123 x 87 x 39.8mm (excluding the projecting parts of the camera) with a weight of 353g without batteries and card.

To get the main tech specs out the way, the NX10 offers a 14.6-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor with a 3-inch AMOLED screen, 720p HD movie recording functionality and the ability to change lenses just like a fully-fledged DSLR.

Put that tech and those dimensions into practice and you get a small, thin and well-moulded design that is comfortable to hold and therefore to shoot with. The only downside to the size is that unless you fit the camera with anything other than the 30mm pancake lens (there are several lens options) the lenses and accessories look rather oversized.

The rear of the camera is dominated by the 3-inch AMOLED screen that sits to the left of the usual array of buttons allowing you access the features of the camera. All the buttons are mapped out as you would expect and Samsung doesn't seem, in our brief play, to have thrown up any "crazies" here. Yes the Menu button is tucked out of the way on its own, but it's certainly no deal breaker.

The main button focus is found on the right-hand shoulder of the camera packed in as best as possible. It's a tight squeeze but it works fairly well with further shortcut buttons and the main controlling dial to access various scene modes and the like.

Elsewhere on the camera Samsung has bundled in a HDMI socket for connecting directly to a TV to share the love and a built-in pop-up flash with hot shoe attachment on top so you can connect an external flash as well. This being from Samsung, it also works with Anynet+, so if you have a Samsung TV, you'll be able to control the camera using the standard TV remote.

One up on both the Panasonic GF1 and Olympus Pen is the inclusion of an electronic viewfinder (EVF) as standard rather than as an optional extra. It's a positive move, meaning you don't have to fork-out extra cash on a viewfinder. It's an advantage that the Panasonic Lumix G1 and GH1 offer, although neither of those models are as compact.

Coming with interchangeable lenses there are a number of options to get the ball rolling. The standard entry-level offering is the 18-55mm with a 30mm pancake and 50-200mm lens completing the package. Samsung are quietly promising a further three lenses a year to make sure there is enough to entice people away from the Panasonic and Olympus systems (who make a similar promise of additional lenses).?The Pentax K-mount adapter will work here, but because it's just a device for physically mounting your K-mount lens to the NX10 body it will have an impact on controls.

You won't be able to use a previous-generation flash either, so if you are after more advanced flash photography, you'll have to buy one from the new system.

Unfortunately while we were able to take pictures and video on both occasions in the US and the UK, we weren't able to take those pictures away. We'll have to wait until we get a final review unit in March to examine the quality of images and the HD video the NX10 produces.

But with a range of technologies including the company's new DRIMe II Pro engine and advanced AF algorithm it should perform. Samsung is also touting something it is calling Smart Range that works in a similar way to HDR, picking out the highs and lows of an image so bright spots aren’t saturated and dark spots aren’t too dark.

Verdict:

Samsung's a late entrant to the hybrid - as it calls it - market and because of that we would have expected something with a little more wow. The lack of connectivity between this and its previous DSLR offerings, certainly in terms of lenses and accessories will annoy those who've already signed up for the previous Samsung systems, but the same could be said of Micro Four Third rivals too.

The Samsung NX10 isn't just another Micro Four Thirds clone, however. There is enough here to differentiate it from Panasonic and Olympus rivals despite setting out with the same ambitions. You don't get the retro styling, but the NX10 looks like it will be lighter in your pocket.

The real deciding factor will be performance and image quality, so we are looking forward to putting the Samsung NX10 through its paces when we get a final unit.

The NX10 is expected to be available in the UK in March.

Samsung?has just announced the?WB650,?an OLED touting 15x zoom packing digital camera to become the flagship of its compact range and we've managed to grab a quick hands-on hot off the factory floor.

The WB650 and WB600's headline features are the massive 15x optical zoom. They're both high-end models with 24mm wide-angle Schneider Kreuznach lenses, 12.2-megapixel sensors and both optical and digital image stabilization features.

The WB650 has a 3-inch AMOLED display and GPS, whereas the WB600 just has a regular 3-inch TFT display. Both can record 720p HD video at 30fps, along with HDMI capability.

In hand and it's pretty big with the zoom clearly having to fit somewhere - this isn't going to fit in your pocket.

Other interesting features we found playing with the camera at the UK launch included a fish-eye and vintage artistic setting and the ability to apply those settings to the video footage you record as well.

According to the "demo guy" we spoke to, running GPS will take about a third off your battery life giving you on average 200 shots on a full charge over the usual 300.

Expect to be zooming in to the action shortly.

For many the digital picture frame bubble has burst. What was once on the top of everyone's Christmas list, is now gathering dust on a mantelpiece, shoved aside by some fancy soft-focused canvas print. Photos frames, lets face it, aren't the most exciting gadgets out there, which means they have to work doubly hard to justify their existence.

The Kodak EasyShare S730 comes with one major selling point: it contains a battery, meaning it can go wire free so you can pass it around. It's not often that people pick-up a framed print and pass it around the room, but it does happen; of course your photo frame might contain 8000 photos on its 1GB internal memory.

That's a fair number of photos, probably far too many to sit and stare at the 7-inch LED 15:9 display. It isn't only about the internal memory though. You can plug in a range of memory cards to feed the frame the files straight from your camera, or just to expand the storage, or tailor your photo selection. It supports the most common, SD/SDHC and xD-Picture and USB, as well as MS, MS Duo and MMC.

The display has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, which given the size isn't the highest resolution, but in practise it looks good enough, even at close range and helps keep the price realistic. The finish of the frame is rather good too, the bezel is edged in metal and the front is a single sheet, so it looks like a premium product, rather than a cheap digital gimmick.

The viewing angles don't let the screen down either, with left, right and above all providing a clear view of the detail on the screen. Don't place the frame on the high shelf however as from below it blacks out very quickly.

Button controls - tucked-in behind the screen out of sight - play second fiddle to the touch controls which reside in the bezel. The touch points are indicated by LEDs on the right-hand side, which dim when not in use, as does the Kodak logo. Thanks to a motion sensor they fire up when you need them. Control is relatively straightforward, once you get used to touching the bezel, rather than the menu option you want. The downside of touch control is that you'll have to contend with fingerprints across that side panel.

The options on offer are rather comprehensive, allowing you to customise your slideshow to your liking, bring in the normal calendar options and so on. One feature we like is the dynamic collage, which gives you four images, so there is a variety rather than one picture sliding in and out in a regimental fashion.

The S730 comes with Kodak's "Color Science Technology", which claims to make your images more vibrant. From the test images we ran it does seem to work, adding a little punch, upping the saturation a little, but we wouldn't say it is a reason to buy the frame on its own.

The battery, of course, is something that does make it a little more interesting, as you aren't dependent on that power connection all the time. It gives you 1-hour of wire free time before it starts gasping for power, so if you've found yourself frustrated with the constraints of having a frame always plugged in, then this might solve your problem. Of course, you could just use a laptop (if you have one) and enjoy the bigger screen when you want to show off your photos.

Other nice features include a timer that will let you program when the frame is on or off, so you don't have to constantly turn it on and off. However, this only controls the frame and with a powerpack hanging out of the wall, if you are concerned about energy use you'll be better off switching it off at the socket.

The frame auto rotates too with the swivel stand on the back making it easy to display your images in landscape or portrait aspects. This also applies to all the display modes, so you can have your collage any way round you like.

Besides the JPEG (and EXIF) image support, it also handles MOV, AVI, MPEG and MPEG4 video, so if you have some on your memory card, it will play the video as part of your slideshow, including the audio track. A volume control on the back will let you kill the soundtrack, something you'll probably want to do for everyday viewing.

If you see a picture you particularly like there is a neat feature which will let you pull up other images from the same date, so if someone comments on your fancy frock, you can play related images from Aunt Hilda's wedding within a couple of presses. You also get music support, so you can put a tune to your slideshow if you are so inclined.

The frame comes with Kodak EasyShare software, but if you are already a digital camera user, you'll probably find that introducing another photo management step into your life is unnecessary. Using a memory card is such a simple option.

Verdict:

We started by saying that digital photo frames are no longer exciting. Kodak manage with the EasyShare S730 to make the best of it however. The real winner is the design, which won't look embarrassing on display in your home.

The battery option brings a new range of possibilities to the frame, giving you a freedom to share that other frames don't offer. It won't let it be a standalone frame, but it will help you show off your photos when people come round.

If you are in the market for a frame, there are so many to choose from. Others will offer online connections and more recently, apps to connect up your digital life. But if that is a step too far, then the Kodak EasyShare S730 is a great frame at a reasonable price.

Samsung?has said that it believes the hybrid camera market, where it is positioning its new NX10 model, will be the key battleground in 2010 as it tries to break the 1m camera sales barrier it has been trapped underneath for the last 3 years.

The comments come as the company officially confirmed that the new?NX10?model, first announced at CES earlier in the month, would be hitting the UK in March starting at ?599.

There will be four lens kit variants to entice consumers looking for more than just a compact and something not as bulky as a DSLR, to the new Samsung offering and away from its competitors the Panasonic and Olympus Micro Four Thirds models.

Those hoping to take advantage of the camera's features like the AMOLED screen, built-in flash and electronic viewfinder will be able to get a 18-55mm lens and the camera for ?599, or a 30mm pancake lens and camera for ?649, or a 18-55mm and 50-200mm lens with camera for ?699 or finally a 18-55mm and the pancake lens for ?749.

Steve Mitchell, general manager marketing, Digital Imaging Division confirmed to journalists at the launch that the NX10 was just the start of "new models for the first half of the year" implying an NX20 could be expected perhaps in time for Photokina in the Autumn.

"We had the GX10 and the then GX20, so an NX20 wouldn't be a tough stretch," a spokesman for the company told Pocket-lint before confirming that "Samsung has promised to release around three lenses a year."

Ahead of PMA2010 in February, Samsung has sent us word of a small flotilla of compact cameras that'll be arriving on these shores over the next few months. There's the WB650, WB600, ST60, ST70 and PL80. Let's take a brief look at each one in turn.

The WB650 and WB600's headline features are the massive 15x optical zoom. They're both high-end models with 24mm wide-angle Schneider Kreuznach lenses, 12.2-megapixel sensors and both optical and digital image stabilization features. The WB650 has a 3-inch AMOLED display and GPS, whereas the WB600 just has a regular 3-inch TFT display. Both can record 720p HD video at 30fps, along with HDMI capability.

The ST60 and ST70 aren't so feature packed, but have a skinny 1.6cm depth. The ST60 has a 27.5mm wide-angle lens, 12.2-megapixel sensor and 4x optical zoom, whereas the ST70 has a? 27mm lens, 14.2-megapixel sensor and 5x optical zoom. The ST70 has both digital and optical image stabilization, whereas the ST60 is limited to just digital. Both can record 720p HD video at 30fps.

Lastly, the PL80 is a 12.2-megapixel point-and-shoot with 28mm wide-angle lens, 5x optical zoom and both optical and digital image stabilization. It also comes with scene recognition technology, face, smile, blink and red-eye detection, and an intriguing mode called "Beauty Shot". It can shoot 640x480 video at 30fps.

The WB650, WB600 and PL80 will be arriving in March, costing ?300, ?250 and ?130 respectively. The ST60 and ST70 show up slightly earlier, in February, costing ?150 and ?180. We'll bring you first-look reviews when we're able to get our hands on the devices.

Nikon’s new flagship DSLR, the D3s, builds on the groundbreaking D3, which revolutionised the high-speed professional DSLR market on its introduction in August 2007. The D3s has an all-new FX format full-frame sensor and enhanced specification, rugged build and shooting controls. It’s expensive, much more expensive, but as with the D3, it’s certainly a whole lot of camera.

The D3s is pretty much identical to its D3 predecessor and reveals how Nikon has evolved the former camera rather than gone for a revolutionary new model. A D4 this is not which means there could certainly be one of those on the cards in the upcoming year. But speculation aside, the D3s has some significant and not so significant improvements and new features.

The new full-frame sensor is a completely redesigned affair with improved micro lens array to help enable the new high-ISO (low noise) capture settings. This includes a boosted ISO 102,400 mode for shooting in extremely low light without additional light/flash. The low noise image performance "war" between Canon and Nikon, which Canon had the march on for quite some time, were pegged back by the D3. Canon improved things further with the introduction of the EOS 5D MkII and then the EOS 7D but Nikon has pulled ahead once more with the D3s.

The Nikon D3s almost identical to the D3 in terms of size and design, the most obvious changes are the more intense green colour on the white balance (WB) and ISO buttons on the back; the fact there is now a dedicated Live View control (in which you can also get to the movie capture mode) is also another obvious change.

Other controls remain unchanged and mean if you’ve shot on a D3 (or any other Nikon DSLR for that matter) then the layout is wholly familiar. However, the camera is a hefty beast, particularly with the excellent 70-24mm F/2.8 zoom we had to play with for this test, a test carried out during the worst of the snow and freezing conditions in Kent, with which the camera and battery pack coped well.

At 1.24kg (body only and identical to the D3) and another 902g gives a camera weighing in at almost 2.3kg (with this lens) so wilting violets need not apply. What you get though is a ruggedised and weather sealed camera capable of shooting at up to 11fps (in DX format) or 9fps (in the full frame FX format) in RAW for up to 48 shots in one burst, a vast improvement on the 18 RAWs at a time from the D3.

The new sensor provides the same 12.1-megapixel resolution from the D3 and as with the D3, the upside of this (comparatively modest) resolution means the greater pixel pitch (so bigger core sensitive pixels) means an excellent signal to noise ratio, a ratio even more enhanced by the improvements to the redesigned sensor and improved micro lens array.

Image processing is controlled by Nikon’s EXPEED image engine and it is superb, and with the new sensor, allows the camera’s standard ISO range of 200 to 12800 (ISO 100 to 102,400 in boosted modes) to become a realistic and usable proposition.

Image noise is so well controlled and as with the D3, we found routine shooting above ISO 1000 no problem. Noise is only really apparent (but very subtly) at ISO 6400 and above, noise in shadows reveals blotches of blockiness at ISO 8000 and it becomes very noticeable at ISO 12,800 and above. Interestingly, areas of smooth featureless colour, such as skies, start to pick up artifacts less quickly.

While the bulk and weight of the D3s mean your average Joe might baulk at carting the camera about with it round their neck, the camera’s handling compensates; it is simply excellent with great ergonomics and easy to use/reach controls.

The integrated vertical grip helps balance the use of the camera too and houses a large lithium-ion battery pack that survived hours of snapping in temperatures as low as -5, shooting 228 images (with plenty of reviewing) and it still reads 74% at time of writing. The camera comes with a dual charger as standard too, and so it darn well should given the price of the camera.

The excellent 3-inch screen has a 920,000-pixel resolution and wide viewing angle making it a great to use, add in the large info display that’s aided by nice (backlit) top and back plate data LCDs and you have information galore. Live View is included and has AF in two modes; hand held and tripod modes and so where you need Live View to aid composition; it works a treat.

Although much of the D3s is gleaned from the D3, another feature here is the ability to shoot 720p HD movies (with built in and external sound - if you link up a microphone) at 24fps and up to the Hi3 (ISO 102,400) sensitivity setting, making movie capture in low light as flexible as it is in still capture.

The aforementioned external audio connects into a dedicated audio port under the cover on the camera’s side and the HDMI socket also located here is now of the mini-HDMI type, allowing room for the audio socket.

In terms of shooting modes, the D3s has a full complement of the manual shooting options, as you’d expect (aperture and shutter priority, program, and full manual control) and this is now enhanced with Nikon’s Scene Recognition System that uses the AE and AF sensors to assess the subject and pick the “correct” setting for the subject.

This type of mode or feature is common today within many consumer oriented cameras but feels a little incongruous here, but I suppose if it helps get better results, then why knock it? The Picture Control System is still in there and this enables tweaks to each shooting mode and allows pre-settings such as standard, vivid and monochrome and allows you to tailor the way each mode reproduces the image.

Then throw in the power of in-camera RAW processing where image size, quality, white balance, picture control settings, noise reduction, colour space and vignetting control are all available to help quickly process the RAW files, and that can help save a lot of time later, in your post-shoot workflow.

The D3s now has a “quiet” shooting mode found on the drive mode dial just below the flash, bracketing and Command Lock “turret” on the top plate. When active this helps reduce the noise the camera’s shutter and mirror mechanism make when you take a shot, but it’s a subtle difference, the most obvious change being the slower mirror return. Another very subtle but nice change is the pressure sensitivity of some controls has been enhanced and this makes it a far more positive experience using controls such as the AF-On button on the back plate.

Dual CF Type I/II storage provides ample room for your photos; you can assign which of the two cards has priority, simply use the second card as an overflow when or if the first becomes full or save RAWs to one and JPEGs to the other. However, the D3s brings UDMA media support to the party and this helps get all the data off the camera’s buffer and into the cards more quickly, vital also for shooting the massive 720p HD videos.

Image formats include JPEG (basic, normal or fine) and RAW with simultaneous JPEG capture in each quality setting and you can shoot TIFFs too. You also get four menu banks (denoted A, B, C and D, although you can name them something more meaningful) so that you effectively get four ways to set the camera up and recall them quickly by selecting the corresponding bank of menus.

This means -?on top of the four menu banks -?there are four custom mode banks too, on which you can layer various custom modes, again for particular camera set-ups you might use repeatedly. Added to the 43 custom options you have 344 possible set-up options in menus and custom modes.

In terms of image quality the metering is handled by a combination of Nikon’s 3D Matrix system and a 1005-pixel RGB sensor, and like the D3, it works amazingly well. However, the (predominantly) snowy subject matter we were forced to shoot (we had weeks of snow) meant the camera would still underexpose, the snow made the metering err as it “thought” everything was brighter than it actually was.

Exposure compensation and bracketing made it s simple job of dialing in a half stop of exposure compensation to bring exposures back into line.

AF’s controlled by Nikon’s Multi-CAM 3500FX processor which, while very reliable, predominantly dark or very light scenes can fool the AF. And although the focusing has 51-AF points -?to which metering can be locked -?and you can select and move the AF point of choice around the zones available, or select 11 specific zones and all of which can be tailored to use all or within user specified groups, we found the AF struggled in some low light scenes that the new camera is capable of shooting in, the AF hunting on various occasions.

Colour and white balance control are excellent. Colour is natural in the camera’s default “standard” mode but there are so many ways to tweak the colour performance (along with everything else), that you can pretty much dial in whatever colour parameters you need, depending on what you want from a subject.

In terms of white balance the D3s is as peerless as the D3 and even the auto WB control provides a nice neutral effect in mixed lighting but it’s not so much fun in very low, mixed lighting. In terms detail you loose a slight amount at higher ISO settings as the EXPEED engine works through what noise there is and at the very high sensitivity settings, blocks of noise in shadows can overwhelm detail that is there. Nevertheless, when you look at the sensitivity in use, it’s remarkable, there’s an image as good as there is to even quibble over.

The non-boosted sensitivity settings provide plenty of pristine detail and while on the original D3 it was only above ISO 1000 that the image processing could be seen to affect fine details to any extent, the D3s’ new sensor and its enhanced circuitry mean that limit is not reached until you hit ISO 2000, but only visible (as with the D3) in fine portrait detail such as skin pores.

Verdict:

Like its forbear, there really is so much kit within the D3s we could write for another week, but we’ve covered the key areas here and major changes from the D3. In terms of the performance and poise, the D3s is even better than the D3, which was this reviewer's top DSLR when it was introduced. However, the market has moved on since August 2007 and there is a far larger choice of cameras now offering similar attributes.

Some may also ask why the resolution is limited (again) to 12.1-megapixels and others may also ask why the HD video feature is not 1080p, as with the latest Canon EOS models? The answer to the former is simply the better dynamic range afforded by fewer and larger pixels allows for enhanced detail (and sensitivity), so that still adds up in our book.

The D3s is designed to offer a poised, higher performance professional solution and that it does very well indeed.?Once again, like the D3 before it, this DSLR is close to a ten out of ten. However, the few minor niggles (low light AF probably the biggest surprise, and the cost) and the way the market has progressed in terms of HD video mean the Nikon D3s achieves a very creditable 9.

Apple is offering a new in-house app for its iPhone platform with the launch of the new MobileMe Gallery application on the App Store.

"The new MobileMe Gallery app is a great way to view the photos in your MobileMe gallery on your iPhone or iPod touch", says Apple. "You can browse with simple pinch, swipe, and flick gestures and even view your friends' albums, no matter where you are".

As this quote might suggest, the app lets you view your entire MobileMe gallery - both photos and movies - on your iPhone or iPod touch while the photos you view are stored for future access - even if you are offline.

There's the option to email links to individual photos, albums, or your entire Gallery for friends to view and you can add friends from your contacts to view their public galleries. The app is available now, free to MobileMe subscribers.

Just back from CES, Stuart Miles takes us through his top five tech topics from the Las Vegas event.

If you weren't already aware something called 3D is apparently going to be big in 2010, with plenty of companies lauding their expertise in the area.

Stuart also talks of the possibility of a transition from the traditional mobile phone, giving the example of the newly announced Dell Mini 5 tablet as an example of the way laptop and phone tech is beginning to merge, and what this could mean for the other big talk of the show, the Nexus One.

Meanwhile, Android was also a hot topic with news of its adoption into everyday devices such as microwaves, and ebook readers also get a look in with colour versions seemingly being the future. Finally, Stuart discusses how if CES is anything to go by, 2010 should be the year of the connected device - with Blu-ray players taking the lead in trying to sell the concept to the masses.

Kodak is accusing Apple and RIM of infringing on its patents, as it's reported the imaging company is looking to its patent portfolio as a revenue source.

Apple's iPhone and RIM's BlackBerrys cameras are said to infringe on Kodak's patents while Kodak also accuse Apple of infringement of patents "that describe a method by which a computer program can 'ask for help' from another application to carry out certain computer-oriented functions".

As well as filing lawsuits in the Western District of New York, Kodak has filed complaints with the US International Trade Commission to attempt to stop imports of the alledeging infringing devices.

While Kodak has patent licencing agreements in place with Nokia, Motorola, Sony and Panasonic, Reuters reports that recently it has settled patent suits against LG and Samsung, suggesting going after Apple and RIM is just turning to the next names on the list.

Genius has launched the G-Shot HD550T high definition camcorder in the UK.

Offering 720p quality (1280 x 720 at 30 frames per second) film footage and 5-megapixel stills, it's a little like a horizontal version of the popular Flip-style PVCs we're seeing of late.

Features include a 3-inch touchscreen display that swivels to enable the user to see themselves recording, so is angled at YouTube ranters, vloggers and the like.

Boasting dual SD slots, each supporting SDHC cards with up to 32GB capacity, there's also an HDMI port for video playback on a big screen TV.

The camcorder uses a Lithium Ion battery, but can also take four AA batteries which is a nice touch.

The G-Shot HD550T will be available from the 18 January for ?109.99, and can be gotten directly from www.geniusnet.co.uk.

The Z450 measures 96.9 x 57.6 x 21.4mm, average dimensions for a compact camera. It slips easily into a pocket, but isn't the slimmest camera out there. The design is rather plain and the mainly plastic construction of the body doesn't show off any obvious weaknesses - it doesn't wow like some of the metal-bodied rivals out there, but then you don't pay top-whack for it either.

The top plate offers the usual power, shutter and zoom controls, but an additional button that toggles the "make up" and "vivid landscape" effects hints at the sector of the market that this camera is aimed.?We said the body didn't show any obvious weaknesses in its construction, well the zoom control encircling the shutter button is the exception here. A great deal of movement is present, so it feels sloppy to use and feels as though it might not last as long as you want it to.

The back of the Z450 offers a 3-inch, 230k-dot display with the remainder of the controls ranging down the right-hand side. There is the usual four-way controller with a central "set" button, which features shortcuts for the screen display icons and flash controls.

The left- and right-hand options on this controller are blank, but can be programmed to give you control over a range of settings including metering modes, exposure compensation, white balance, ISO and self-timer. It's a welcomed addition, although pressing the central "set" button gives you access to a shortcut menu with all these options on anyway, and the loss of the usual suspects (typically self-timer and macro mode) from this control means you have to hunt out the latter in the menu. Macro mode then only gives you 10cm focusing, which isn't particularly macro.

A BS (best shot) button gives you access to the normal scene modes, as well as the BS Auto mode which will attempt to recognise the scene and provide the best results. The level of control you get (through the shortcuts mentioned above or the menu key) varies depending on what you select. If you choose "Auto" (as opposed to BS Auto) you get the most control.

It is worth using the scene modes with caution and investigating the menus when you come to use a new scene. If you take a look in Portrait you find that there is a "make up" level applied, which you might not want if you prefer your subject to remain natural-looking.

There are a further three buttons on the rear of the camera, giving image playback, instant video record and a final camera button, which takes the Z450 to still shooting from any state, be it turned off, in the menus or wherever.

The instant video is a nice touch, but without a conventional "movie" mode, you find that the settings for the video capture are displayed on your regular display on the screen as one of the display settings. So you can either have no information, stills camera only, or the whole hog, including the movie mode (HD, STD, LP), the length of time you can record in that mode (a maximum of 10 minutes as M-JPEG) and a live histogram, all of which makes the display rather cluttered.

You get headline video capture at HD 720p, 24fps, which outdoors, in good light, gives you reasonably good results. But it gets very noisy indoors, even in daylight, and is very noisy in lower light conditions. Lower resolution settings are available, and you can shoot stills in the middle of video, but you end up with a jump in your movie.

The only connection on the Z450 is a bespoke AV/USB connection, which allows you to extract images via your PC, or connect to your TV with the supplied cable. This is only at standard quality, so if you want to view your HD video, you'll have to have some other means of getting it to your TV.

The lens is a 4x zoom, offering you 28-112mm (35mm equiv), which deploys from the body in about 2 seconds to be ready to take your first shot. The wide angle shows some signs of barrel distortion as you'd expect, but it isn't too drastic. Sitting under the hood is a 12-megapixel sensor.

The Z450 comes with the boast of improved intelligent focusing, although we still found a number of test shots where focusing wasn’t great. Generally though, results are good, with good natural colour reproduction. The biggest problem the Z450 seems to be faced with though is sensor noise as the ISO increases.

At the lowest ISO settings images are noise free, but noise is obvious at ISO 400 and intrusive at settings above this. The top setting - ISO 3200 - looks as though someone has smeared oil across the lens, the results even look poor on the 3-inch display, so is best avoided. Image stabilisation is present and seems to be effective enough, providing greater scope for hand-holding longer exposures where you might be tempted to use a higher ISO.

The flash gives a range of options too, with the soft flash worth a try with some darker indoor shots. We found that red eye was something of a problem with the standard flash and the red eye correction is overly aggressive, although if you are mostly going to keep your shots small, or use them for the likes of Facebook, then that probably won't be an issue.

Digging into the menus you'll find more options than you might expect, such as continuous shooting options, including a 10fps mode, although this is captured at 1 megapixel with the 4fps mode, at 2 megapixels. There is a lot hiding in the menus, perhaps too much, as the chances are you won't go looking for these things.

Writing images to the SD card is a little on the slow side, especially when you employ some of the additional effects, for example the "make up" mode. The SD card hides in the bottom next to the battery - with a boasted 550 image life-span. We didn't set out to disprove this, but after about 200 shots and some video, it was still showing as fully charged.

Verdict:

The Z450 isn't that exciting though. From the design, to the handling of the on-screen icons, it feels a step behind some of the other players in this market. The dubious quality of the zoom ring was a cause of concern for us, something that rivals have no problem with.

Overall, the results from the camera are pleasing enough in good conditions, but the lower light performance is poor - the headline HD video capture suffers from the same problem. A range of options do give some creative scope, but this camera is mostly pitched to those wanting a simple point and shoot with a few fun features.

Online discounts are starting to make the Z450 more appealing over the RRP of ?199, which is a little on the high side.

Lenovo Slate

I really like the Lenovo Slate?because it was a design that tried to have both its cake and eat it. A fully-fledged Windows 7 laptop by day, but by night you can rip the screen off and use it as a tablet/slate PC for surfing the Internet, watching movies and viewing pictures. Very clever.?

Wireless power

There were two companies that we spotted touting the benefits of wireless power.?Powermat?and Fulton innovations. The news that Powermat has worked out how to put their technology directly into batteries rather than you having to have a separate battery cover should make the technology considerably more acceptable. Fulton innovations - burying it into tables, kitchen worktops and cars means you'll be able to charge stuff wherever you go. The only problem is that wireless power really needs to be an open standard to succeed.?

Mophie iPhone credit card reader

Making virtual payments with your credit card just looks so wonderfully futuristic and is likely to transform the Sunday car boot sale. Granted you can use the?Mophie?offering in the UK thanks to Chip and PIN, but it still looks like the kind of thing societies of tomorrow will do.?

Razer Xbox controller

This is one for gamers. Xbox 360 gamers that really care in fact. Not designed for the average casual gamer, it's a new move for Razer?into the consumer space. We love the attention to detail that allows you to set programmable shoulder buttons as well as the ability to stiffen the joysticks for racing games and loosen them for first person shooters.?

Android-powered microwave

Okay, this is a silly one, but we love the idea that Touch Revolution believes our cooking gadgets could become clever with Android. Whether it's getting the microwave to ping us a tweet when it's done or downloading new cooking settings, it shows what is possible in the future. Who said Android was just for your phone?

As with mobile phones, one never quite expects to see the best of the imaging world at CES because of PMA just around the corner next month. That said it didn't stop just about everyone apart from Canon and Nikon coming up with some goods for us to pick up, prod, get the measure of and try to walk away with when still in our pockets.

To be straight, you rather get the feeling that the camera world is running out of ideas for the moment, but what we did see in Vegas this year is that even the low end snappers have got high-end features nowadays. All good viewscreens have gone touch, all cameras can capture video in HD and powered optical image stabilisation is everywhere.

The touchscreen has completed its move into the camcorder world now too with 3.5-inch displays all the rage and the odd one even gesture controlled. Just about every range of video recorders has popped up with flash memory and larger, more power hungry HDD options sometimes backed up with dual SD/SDHC card slots.

The Canon LEGRIAs and Sony Handycams are good examples plus there's even been the emergence of support for the huge capacity SDXC memory units too like in Panasonic's range of camcorders. Very useful for storing hours of 1080p footage. Of course, you could always opt for an Eye-Fi ProX2 wireless card now that the engine and antenna has been updated

Both Sony and Kodak updated their pocket video recorders with the launch of the rugged Kodak Playsport and the 360 degree, panorama-shooting Sony Bloggie - once you've bought the adaptor that is.

The Polaroid camera made its promised return - along with a few TVs for good measure - and even the digital photo frame was given a new lease of life with Wi-Fi and e-mail connection as in the Kodak Pulse and with a 700Hz OLED screen in Samung's model. But, what stood out from the crowd for us were...

It may not have Wi-Fi, GPS or a touchscreen for that matter, but the Samsung NX-10 just looks like a damn fine piece of kit. Samsung isn't part of the micro-four-thirds system but this is the company's version of a mini-DSLR and it'll give both Panasonic and Olympus a serious run for their money.

The sensor is the kind you'll find in a proper camera, the AF system looks impressive, it has full control as well as smart auto and priority settings and, of course, it captures 720p HD video as well. It weighs just 353g and comes with a very pretty 3-inch AMOLED on the back plus it can work the shutter between 1/4000 of a second and 30 seconds which goes up to 8 minutes on bulb mode. No clues as to when it's coming out yet, so, for now, just enjoy the pictures.

Future Flier: Panasonic Twin Lens Camcorder

At $21,000 a pop for this tailor made piece of 3D movie shooting industry-grade kit, it's unlikely anyone you know is going to be buying one. However, we will be reaping the benefits of the first purpose-built 3D cinema cameras and their two lenses because a) we're going to get more and better made 3D films with a greater control and use of depth and b) we'll probably see versions of this system turning up in home camcorder models soon too.

Top of the Flops: General Imaging & Olympus

Apparently these two companies released some compact cameras at CES 2010. In fact, we know they did. We wrote about them. They were perfectly respectable models, but what they did for the world of photography can be written on the back of the kind of postage stamp that Amoebae might use to send to other Amoebae.

The Best of the Rest

Samsung CL80
Proving it wasn't just a fluke, Samsung released an upgrade to the CL65 compact and came up with a fascinating sounding shooter with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, DLNA, an address book, a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen display and even an on-screen QWERTY keyboard too. They did say camera, right?

Samsung HMX-S16
Samsung appears to have had its imaging developers on steroids in the run up to the Vegas tech show. The company pulled out a third great product in the shape of the SSD recording S-Series camcorders. They've got high-end glassware, fantastic frame rate recording for slow and fast speeds but it's the fact they're the first Wi-Fi and DLNA-enabled video cameras out there that really caught out attention.

Sony Dash
With photo frames becoming sexy again, it'd probably have to be the Sony Dash that was the pick of the crop. It connects to the Internet and your network over Wi-Fi, it has a touchscreen and it's also got widget access to the world and a bunch of other services. Slight case of split personality disorder but a great boost for this gadget genre.

Sony Cyber-shot HX5
We've seen compacts with GPS in them before but this one's got a compass too. The idea is that it tags the image with your location and even the direction you were facing too. Silly? Perhaps. Pointless? Maybe, but nice to see someone trying.

Further to its 3D-themed launches out at CES in Las Vegas, Sony has announced plans to offer showcases of its 3D home experience to consumers across Europe.

Under its plans to bring 3D to the home by mid-2010, Sony says it will become the first manufacturer in Europe to showcase 3D, with demo areas to be set up in its flagship SonyStyle stores.

"From January at six SonyStyle Stores throughout Europe, visitors and 3D enthusiasts will be able to experience the next generation of 3D home entertainment first-hand, viewing demonstrations of music, movies, games, football and television programming in stunning high definition 3D", says Sony.

As far as the UK goes, Sony's showcase can be found - from 12 January - as the SonyStyle store at Heathrow's Terminal 5, and will no doubt offer gadget-loving flyers an interesting distraction from the tedium of the airport.

As well as 3D-capable Sony Bravia TVs and 3D-capable Blu-ray players, Sony says its 3D experience "will encompass an entire family of 3D compatible products, including PlayStation 3... Vaio notebooks and Cyber-shot digital still cameras".

We've pictures here for you of the new ultra-slim Lumix FP3 compact digi-cam from Panasonic. As well as a 14-megapixel sensor and 4x optical zoom, the FP3 boasts a 3-inch touchscreen.

As far as touch functionality goes, you can use your finger to touch to focus before shooting, to flick through your pictures afterwards and even to turn the camera on and off by sliding the lens cover.

Other features for the new snapper include the likes of image stabilisation and face detection, as well as the now almost-standard HD video capture.

We know the FP3 is due a release in 2010 but not much else, so we'll bring you more as we hear it.

Casio launched new compact cameras into its Exilim range at CES, and we've snapped pics of the flagship EX-FH100.

The new digi-cam offers a 10.1-megapixel sensor, burst shooting, 720p video recording and a 10x optical zoom lens.

With Casio's "Dynamic Photo" capability that lets you edit and merge moving images on the camera, there's also the ability to cut out moving images from a background, and paste them on top of a completely different still shot.

We've no info on a launch or price for the new model, but will keep you posted.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Canon has announced updates to its flagship HF S21, HF S20 and HF S200 camcorders. All have been granted great big 3.5-inch touchscreen LCDs - a shift from the previous joystick-based approach.

We got hands on with the HF S21 - the top of the range - and snapped a few pictures of the device and got an idea of what it's like to handle. It has 64GB of internal flash memory, along with dual SD card slots, and an electronic viewfinder.

The HF S20 lacks the viewfinder and only has 32GB of internal memory, and the HF S200 doesn't have any internal memory at all, or the viewfinder, but does have the twin SD card slots to store your photos on.

All the HF S camcorders have 1/2.6-inch CMOS sensors, with 8.59 megapixels - much the same as the models they've replaced in Canon's range. However, the optical stabilisation has been improved with a powered OIS setting in the menus.

The HF S21 should cost $1400, the HF S20 will be more like $1100 and the HF S200 will cost around $1000. All will be showing up in April in the USA. When we get UK pricing and availability, we'll be sure to let you know.

Amidst a whole pile of other announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Samsung has updated its popular CL65 point-and-shoot compact camera. Enter the CL80.

The device is packing a whopping great big pile of features - Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, DLNA, an address book, a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen display and even an on-screen QWERTY keyboard. As Wired's Gadget Lab points out, from that spec list it sounds more like a phone than a camera.

On the more camera-y side, then, it has a 14.2-megapixel sensor with a Schneider Kreuznach 7x optical zoom. It can take 720p HD video, and can share video and stills between other devices, or upload to web services.

An accelerometer also allows you to use gestures to control the device, and you might notice from the pictures we took that the base is actually angled up slightly from flat. That 7-degree tilt is purposeful, and exists to make it slightly easier to take group photos on a timer without cutting everyone's heads off.

No pricing or availability info yet, beyond Q2 of 2010, but if the CL80 floats your boat then stay tuned to Pocket-lint - we'll have further info as the device nears release.

Officially announced at the beginning of the week at CES in Las Vegas, we've managed to track down the Samsung NX10 to have a quick hands-on photo session.

Although we weren't able to take away photos with the NX10 (we tried but got caught) we were able to play with the camera, take pictures and see that it is responsive.

The NX10 boasts a 14.6-megapixel sensor, a 3-inch AMOLED display, which is stunning with a massive viewing angle, and the claim of the fastest auto focus in its class. Oh and it can record H.264 720p HD movie footage.?

Features include a built-in flash, manual controls, a Smart Auto function, Smart Range for capturing bright areas and dark areas in the same frame, and a Supersonic Dust Reduction system.

It's light, small and is sure to give cameras like the Panasonic Lumix GF1 and Olympus Pen range a run for their money.?

Launching in the US, with no confirmed UK launch info at the moment, the device will sport a 7-inch touchscreen display that gives you access to a number of Internet widgets and applications like Pandora or Netflix. In fact there are some 1000 free apps available, thanks to a tie-in with?Chumby, to play with services like weather, traffic, sports, social networking, movies, music, games and more.

The device connects to the Internet via a Wi-Fi connection and you can even set it to wake you up by music streamed from your computer or the internet.

In an attempt to appeal to those who might look to put this in the kitchen as well as the bedroom, the Dash can be stood vertically or laid flat on a work top, presumably so you can read recipes from it while your cooking.

Priced at $199, Sony is hoping it will be snapped up by those looking for more than just a "dumb" picture frame.

Panasonic is hoping the fact that it's got two cameras built-in capable of both recording 1080p should make 3D filming making a cinch.?

Oh, and the two lenses make it look like Wall-e. All together... arhh.?

Polaroid?has confirmed that it will be releasing a new Polaroid instant camera?later this year after a campaign to not let the film format die revealed fresh consumer interest and we've got photos of what it will look like.

The new camera, which features a cute looking fascia, will come in three colours - silver, black and faux wood and offer fans of the outdated film format the chance to relive the glory days once again.

Features are still being worked on, but expect a virtually similar experience to the cameras the company used to make with a drop down door to reveal the film tray.

Polaroid say the new model will cost around $100 or ?60.?

While Panasonic was busy distracting us with all the 3D announcements, the company also quietly released two cameras to add to the Lumix range of compacts.

The ultra-slim lifestyle Lumix FP series now has a 3-inch LCD touchscreen model in the shape of the DMC-FP3 with a 14.1-megapixel sensor and 4x optical zoom. You can use your finger to touch to focus before shooting, to flick through your pictures afterwards and even to turn the camera on and off by sliding the lens cover.

Sadly, the second model, the DMC-FP1, has a non-touch 2.7-inch LCD and slightly smaller 12.1-megapixel sensor, but otherwise both enjoy the Lumix intelligent auto scene selector mode as well as HD video shooting at 30fps.

Naturally, image stabilisation and face recognition also feature along with a promise of no more than 0.007 seconds of shutter lag, and the FP3 is topped off with an intelligent sensor to match the brightness of the LCD to the ambient conditions.

No word on price or availability, but there'll be red, blue, navy and silver colours to choose from.

The world's favourite Wi-Fi SD card maker has taken another step closer to photographers' hearts at CES with the launch the 8GB Eye-Fi Pro X2.

The card sees a doubling of the previous top storage capacity plus the addition of the X2 engine, which increases read/write speeds and range with the inclusion of a 802.11n radio and improved antenna design. It can also automatically delete files which it's already safely uploaded to make continuous working space on the card.

The card can create ad-hoc connections direct to your computer if the wireless router is out of range and will also work away from home at any one of 10,000 Wayports and open hotspots in the US.

The Pro X2 can send JPEG, RAW and video files to your machine as well as to one of 25 online media sharing sites ready tagged. It's available for pre-order now for $150.

At the same time, the company is launching a desktop facility called Eye-Fi Centre for better control of your Eye-Fi experience. You'll be able to download the software later this month.

Panasonic has announced a range of standard and high definition camcorders at CES in Las Vegas.

The three new standard definition camcorders include the top of the range SDR-H85, which can record to HDD and SDXC, SDHC or SD memory card and features an enhanced optical zoom for 78x ultra zoom shooting, an decent 33mm wide-angle setting, and a new Active mode for the Advanced O.I.S that apparently suppresses blur and produces clear images.

The SDR-H85 also gets Intelligent Auto, Intelligent Contrast Control, a Wind Noise Cancellation feature and a 1.9 second quick power-on.

The other two standard-def efforts come in the form of the SDR-T50 and SDR-S50. The T50 is described as "small and light whilst also offering consumers extended recording options" due to its built-in memory. The S50 allows for a slimmer and more compact design though still manages to pack an enhanced optical 78x zoom lens.

Panasonic has also graced us with a quartet of high definition models - the HDC-HS60, TM60, TM55 and SD60 - featuring a 35.7mm wide lens, 35x Intelligent Zoom, newly developed Power O.I.S and face recognition.

The hybrid-type HS60 records onto its 120GB HDD and an SDXC, SDHC, or SD memory card. The twin-memory TM60/55 records onto its 16GB/8GB built-in memory and an SDXC, SDHC, or SD memory card, and the SD60 records onto an SDXC, SDHC, or SD memory card.

The camcorders are said to have an "ultra-compact size" and despite their deficiency in stature all four still get a decent 25x optical zoom.

No word on the release date or pricing for the standard definition models, but you can expect the high def devices to go on sale from February 2010.

Kodak has chosen CES as the venue to release a rugged version of its Zi8 pocket video camcorder and we can now bring you hands-on photos of the new gadget.

The Kodak PlaySport offers 1080p video, Facebook and YouTube uploading tools and new underwater capabilities down to 10 feet.

With a 2-inch colour LCD display, it can also capture 5-megapixel still images making it a durable option for those who are looking for an imaging all-rounder that won't faint at the sight of a puddle - we saw this first hand as the company ditched some fish and dumped it in a fish bowl.

Due in black, blue, purple around April, the PlaySport will go on sale for $150 or ?130 in the next couple of months.?

A quick play showed the device to be quick and responsive with the D-pad, a massive improvement over the Zi8.

Due to the waterproof elements it doesn't have a built-in USB dongle or the ability to have an external mic, however as a rugged device for messing around with in the pool - I'm sure the girls will be happy - it looks pretty good.?

Kodak's flaghip compact camera for 2010 has been announced at CES, with the debut of a new touchscreen-enabled digital camera, the "Slice", which we've grabbed hands-on pics of.

With a 3.5-inch touch display, a 14-megapixel sensor and 5x zoom lens, the Slice can capture 720p HD video and store up to 5000 images that you can then search through via tags or face recognition.

Due to hit shop shelves in black, nickel and "radish", it's incoming in April for $349.95 or the ?300 here in the UK.

In use and the prototype was incredibly buggy suggesting there is still plenty of work to be done before this is "retail" ready.?

Sony has littered the floor of CES 2010 with 15 Handycams for consumers to pick through. The enormous addition to the range consists of five HDD recording models and 10 which store footage onto internal flash memory and both SD and Sony Memory sticks as well.

The premium models are the CX550V, XR550V, CX350V, XR350V and CX305 - all of which hold the top end G-glass Sony lens for wide-angle, high quality shooting with around twice the field of view of previous Handycams . They also feature Sony's incredibly successful 3-way stabilisation technology we've seen in previous models and it's also present on the more mid-range of the remaining 10 Handycams too.

Each has quicker AF than ever before, plus intelligent auto modes and higher bit-rate recording up to 24Mbps. All the work is taken care of by the Exmor R CMOS sensors and BIONZ processors as used in all high-end Sony imaging products. There's face recognition, stills shooting at up to 12-megapixel resolution and even a Golf Shot mode which will analyse your swing in slow motion.

Optical zoom is anywhere between 10x and 25x depending on your choice and, if you wish, you can also purchase an additional lens for up to 60x without having to go digital. What Sony seems to be saying with the announcement is that it's your call. Whatever combination you're after, the company now stocks - whether that's with a 240GB HDD or just a little flash. All models will be out this spring.

Sanyo has never been one to shy away from "world's -est" claims and we're happy to see the release of the new "Full HD Slim Type Dual Camera Xacti VPC-CS1" sees it true to form.

The world's smallest, lightest and thinnest dual camera Xacti for 2010 is the claim and it's backed up by a dimension of just 27mm thick and a weight of 142 grams.

Due to be available in February 2010 for $300, and boasting a 10x zoom with a 38mm wide-angle lens, as the name might suggest the Dual Camera can record video in 1920 x 1080 resolution in H.264 and snap up to 8-megapixel still images.

In addition, Sanyo has also unveiled the VPC-SH1, due to be available in black and red? for $399, also in February 2010. This model takes the more conventional horizontal camcorder format and also offers dual video and still functionality.

Specs for the SH1 come in with Full HD vid capture, a 35mm wide-angle lens, 30x advanced zoom, and 3.5-megapixel stills. We will keep you posted on a UK launch later in the year for both models.

As well as being known for their rugged snappers, Olympus has also revamped its Mju range with small but powerful modestly priced options.

The Mju 5010 comes in at ?199, the Mju 7040 at ?240 and the Mju 9010 at a top-end ?290. They all shoot HD footage and feature up to 10x optical zoom as well as an 2GB of internal memory - just about enough to make you throw your SD cards away.

Beyond these ultra-slim, colourful creatures, the company has also introduced the FE range of compacts considerably cheaper and more cheerful starting at ?150. They're available from today but high-end lovers must hang on 'till March.

Following the news Pocket-lint covered of the re-launch of Polaroid, the company has released details of some of its upcoming products at CES in Las Vegas.

These include the return of the Polaroid OneStep camera, the PIC 1000, which will be available in a range colours and uses classic Polaroid Color 600 Instant Film to produce the brand's iconic white bordered instant pictures.

Polaroid's continuing partnership with ZINK Imaging means that the company has a new digital addition in the form of the 12-megapixel Polaroid 3 x 4-inch Instant Camera, which comes with a rechargeable battery and LCD screen. This will be backed up by ZINK Imaging’s ink-free printing tech, which produces full-colour images without ink cartridges, ribbons, or toner.

Other releases from Polaroid include the FHD series of LCD TVs coming in 42-, 52- and 65-inch sizes, all come with a 250Hz refresh rate and are 1080p Full HD. The 42- and 52-inch models both get integrated Blu-ray players and LED backlighting.

As yet there is no word on pricing or availability for any of the products mentioned, but we'll keep you posted.

Although not as exciting as the HX5 or even the TX7 also announced, Sony has squeezed out a few more digi-cams at CES. Due for a new year launch the W series Cyber-shot range and budget S2100 have also been debuted at the Las Vegas event.

To go the S2100 out of the way (Sony did not even deem it worthy of a mention in the press release) you're looking at 12.1-megapixels, 3x optical zoom, a 3-inch LCD display and availability in black, silver and orange.

The W series range is apparently due to be made up of the W390, W380, W370, W360, W350, W330, W320 and W310 model, but we've got deets of the W380 in particular.

The Cyber-shot W380 will offer Sony's Bionz processor, a 24mm wide angle Sony G lens with 5x optical zoom, 2.17-inch LCD display and a 14.1 effective megapixel resolution sensor.

The W380 is due to be available in black, silver, gold and red, but we're in the dark on pricing for both models, so will bring you more with a UK retail launch announcement.

Olympus has just announced a refresh of its Mju Tough camera range with the Tough 3000, at CES in Las Vegas.

Like its predecessors it's waterproof to 3 metres, shockproof to a drop of 1.5 metres and can withstand temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celcius.

It's is also similar to previous cameras in the range as it gets a 3.6x optical zoom, 12-megapixel sensor and 2.7-inch LCD to view your pics on, although in terms of aesthetics there are differences - with a more rounded appearance.

The main updates appear to be the HD movie function and [ib] software - allowing images to be organised by person using face recognition, by place with the GPS-based mapping function or by event. You'll also get 1GB of internal memory, SD card slot and USB charging.

Available from March 2010 you'll be able to snap it up for ?199.99.

Sony has launched the TX7 at CES, as a sort of fashion take on a fairly high-end compact digi-cam.

Said to be "exquisitely finished in a choice of three fashion colours", the slimline TX7 gets a 4x optical zoom lens capable of 25mm wide-angle capture.

Boasting Sony's Bionz processor, it's a 10.2-megapixel effort. The back sees a large 3.5-inch LCD display that boasts touchscreen functionality while there's also 1080i video capture thrown into the mix.

With no pricing revealed, it's due to hit shop shelves after the end of Jan - so take a gander at the gallery of hands-on pics below in the meantime.

Sony has launched a new high-end compact digi-cam at CES with the introduction of the new Cyber-shot HX5.

Boasting Sony's Exmor R CMOS Sensor the camera promises detailed, low-noise images, even when you're shooting in low light, thanks to its high sensitivity compared to bog-standard sensors.

The 10x optical zoom lens is equivalent to a 25-250mm range in a 35mm camera while you'll be snapping 10.1-megapixel stills on the full setting. The compact is also capable of recording 1920 x 1080i video footage in AVCHD.

The unique selling point for the HX5 is that it launches with the boast of being the world's first camera with GPS and compass functionality.

Your location will be shown on the 3-inch Clear Photo LCD screen as the pics are geotagged while a new compass function will show the direction you were pointing when the picture was taken.

Other specs include Optical SteadyShot with new Active Mode, Intelligent Sweep Panorama, High Dynamic Range Backlight Correction and face detection.

Due to be available from the end of January 2010, pricing is to be confirmed, but have a browse through the gallery below while you wait for more info.

Samsung has pulled off a bit of a coup by introducing the world's first camcorders to offer built-in Wi-Fi and DLNA connectivity.

The Samsung HMX-S15 and HMX-S16 both allow users to send recorded footage either wirelessly to DLNA compatible HDTVs or to your computer over you home network, and all at the touch of the AllShare button. There's also an HDMI socket for those who'd rather stick to more traditional methods.

Beyond connectivity, the hardware is equally impressive on all fronts with the new Samsung Victoria Engine, 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor and Scneider-Kruznach HD lens offering 15x optical zoom. Between the three, the Korean company promises pin sharp HD quality at low light levels and with superb noise reduction.

Naturally, there's optical image stabilisation, intelli-zoom for digital enlarging up to 18x, slow motion capture up to 600fps - so long as you're willing to sacrifice resolution - and time lapse mode as well.

All of the footage can be viewed on the 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen and is stored on either SD/SDHC or an SSD - 64GB for the S16 and 32GB for the S15.

The final model of the three is the HMX-S10 which doesn't have the Wi-Fi and DLNA and loses the SSD as well. The camcorders are available from June and we'll have prices and pictures to follow.

Sony?has followed up the launch of its pocket camcorder range first launched at CES 2009 with new models for?CES 2010.

Called the Sony Bloggie, the new camcorders are, as the name suggests, aimed at those that like to blog their life.

While the name of the range will go under the Bloggie moniker, there will be two models called the MHS-PM5/PM5K and MHS-CM5.

The MHS-CM5 will be a standard pistol grip offering, while the PM5K will be the more innovative of the two.

Styled in a choice of four vibrant colour finishes they will capture 1920 x 1080 Full HD MP4 video clips and 5-megapixel still photos. Both feature in-built USB adapters to connect directly to a PC or Mac. Both also feature on-board SteadyShot image stabilisation when shooting in 720p mode and you'll get face detection as well.

The MHS-PM5/PM5K will take things further with a 270 degrees swivel lens for the egotistical amongst you as well as a special 360 video lens adaptor that lets you shoot panoramic videos.

Videos are stored on Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD/SDHC memory cards.

Available from February.?

Casio has announced its 2010 range of EXILIM cameras at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Four models comprise the new additions - the EX-FH100, EX-H15, EX-Z2000 and EX-Z550.

The EX-FH100 is the flagship model, which has burst shooting and a high power 10x optical zoom lens. The EX-H15 has the optical zoom too, and all four have Casio's "Dynamic Photo" capability that lets you edit and merge moving images on the camera.

That gives you the ability to cut out moving images from a background, and paste them on top of a completely different still shot, a bit like a TV green-screen. You can also add animations stored on the memory card.

The burst-shooting in the 10.1-megapixel EX-FH100 goes upto 40 shots per second for 9-megapixel still images. It can also capture upto 1000fps video recording, and 720p video recording. The EX-H15, EX-Z2000 and EX-Z550 all carry 14.1-megapixel sensors.

There's no pricing or availability on any of the cameras yet, but we'll let you know as soon as we hear anything along those lines. Stay tuned.

Sony has finally admitted that it's MemoryStick card format might not be the best for digital camera users with the launch of an SD card range at CES in Las Vegas.

Although Sony says that “the new cards will complement Sony’s existing Memory Stick line", it also makes the admission that it needs to "satisfy the needs of a broader range of users", ie everyone that doesn't use MemoryStick.

The new SD/SDHC and microSD/microSDHC memory cards, which – except for the microSD 2GB card - are all class-4-speed for high-definition recording, will come in a range of sizes from 2GB to 32GB sizes and speeds geared towards both professional and consumer photographers.

Not fully signing up to the idea of SD cards though Sony state that "Memory Stick is the recommended media for Sony products, offering a range of unique benefits".

Someone must have called mid-range camera day at CES 2010 as a third set of comfortably priced, comfortably specced digital compacts hits, this time courtesy of General Imaging.

There are four to choose from with the 14-megapixel, 3-inch LCD, HD video shooting GE E1486TW and GE E1480W. Catchy names. Part of the Power Series, they're just 0.83 of an inch thick but offer 8x optical zoom, image stabilisation and a very handy 28mm wide-angle lens.

The reason the former costs $180 and the latter $150 is that one of them has a touchscreen with gesture control interface. They ship in spring and come in black, red, silver and a few other colours of the rainbow.

The second two are the Smart Series GE A1255 and GE A1455 which are a little cheaper at just $90 and $100 respectively. This time they have 2.7-inch LCD screens, 5x zoom and the GE A1255 drops down to a perfectly respectable 12 megapixels. They're also out in the spring.

All four compacts feature face, blink and smile detection, panorama shot, auto scene settings and a red-eye removal tool as well.

Following the breaking tech news we brought you earlier that Lady Gaga is to join forces with the new Polaroid on imaging products, it seems fashion designer Jason Wu is to do the same with General Imaging.

Jason Wu, the 27-year-old designer who has made headlines dressing First Lady Michelle Obama, "will lend his design talents and fashion insight to General Imaging to influence the style and aesthetic design in a new line of point-and-shoot cameras".

The new owner of the Polaroid brand, PLR IP, has announced a "multi-year strategic partnership" with Lady Gaga, who will, somewhat bizarrely, "serve as creative director for a specialty line of Polaroid Imaging products".

"The partnership brings together one of the world’s most iconic brands with today's fastest rising musical artist and cultural trend setter", says the company in a press release.

"I am so proud to announce my new partnership with Polaroid as the creative director and inventor of specialty projects", says Lady Gaga in the release.

"The Haus of Gaga has been developing prototypes in the vein of fashion/technology/photography innovation - blending the iconic history of Polaroid and instant film with the digital era - and we are excited to collaborate on these ventures with the Polaroid brand".

"Lifestyle, music, art, fashion: I am so excited to extend myself behind the scenes as a designer, and to - as my father puts it - finally, have a real job".

The new Polaroid says the team up is a "natural choice", with new products by Polaroid and Lady Gaga due to hit retail shelves starting in late 2010.

"M" might stand for mid-range in the Kodak EasyShare world but mediocre it probably will not. The old-school photographic firm has updated its compacts today at CES with the launch of some very reasonably priced models with a focus on sharing.

The top two models are the Kodak EasyShare M580 and M575. They both feature 14-megapixel sensors with wide-angle Scheider-Kruznach glassware to back them up and either an 8x or 5x optical zoom as well. They're good for HD video capture, which you can watch back on their 3-inch LCDs, and include HDMI ports too.

At ?180 and ?170 respectively, much of the scrimping is on technical features with just a smart auto mode and face recognition to talk of, but the focus is on the Share button which will tag photos for instant upload to Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and, of course, the Kodak Gallery and Kodak Pulse.

The second two models lose out on the high-end lens, and go down to 2.7 inches on the LCD and drop to 12-megapixel resolution. They are the Kodak EasyShare M550 and the M530. They still have the Share button and feature 5x optical zoom and 3x optical zoom for $150 and $130 respectively when they arrive in March and February.

It's hard to get excited about digital photo frames, but Kodak has actually done an excellent job of it with the KODAK PULSE. Yes, it's a frame like all others - 512MB storage for 4000 odd pics at the 800 x 600 resolution the 7-inch LED screen can display - but this one's all internet connected too.

It works over Wi-Fi and automatically updates its photos according to what's put in your Facebook gallery or your Kodak Gallery space. You can also e-mail images direct to the frame itself or update over your home network.

All in all, a pretty excellent idea for giving to parents who live a long way a way so they can receive regular updates on how their grand children are getting on. It's also apparently perfect for those moments when you want to relive you and your girlfriends enjoying cake.

The KODAK PULSE is out at the beginning of April 2010 for ?110 and will ship worldwide in all its capped-up glory.

The minimal, flat fronted design and internally stacked/folded zoom lens mechanism of Panasonic's 12.1 effective megapixel Lumix DMC-FP8 may be a claimed bold departure for the electronics manufacturer's range of otherwise conventionally styled digital compacts. But, at the same time, it bears an uncanny resemblance to the late Minolta Dimage X camera series of 5 years back.

The brushed metal strip on the front of this credit card sized, 20.2mm in depth point-and-shoot model also more subtly recalls recent Sony T-series Cyber-shots, likewise flat fronted and with internal zooms to make them just as pocket friendly.

So we approach the solid feel yet lightweight 131g aluminium-construction (without battery/card) FP8 with a distinct sense of d?j? vu. The question is: what new, if anything, does Panasonic have to add to this distinctly boxy form?

Um, how about illuminated blue buttons on the back plate that bleep when pressed? Fortunately these can be deactivated if you're worried about attracting muggers, or looking like a big kid.

With the camera powering up in a zippy second, usefully the hidden Leica-branded 4.6x optical zoom starts at a wide angle 28mm, so is ideally suited to group portraits and landscape shots, composed via the bright 2.7-inch, 230k dot resolution LCD screen at the rear. There's the further ability to adjust screen settings to increase visibility when holding the camera at arm's length and shooting over the heads of a crowd. Since there's not much on this Lumix to get a firm grip on when shooting pictures handheld, the lens is stabilised courtesy of Power OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation), said to be twice as effective as Panasonic's previous implementations of OIS, not that in practice we noticed.

Returning more effectively here is Panasonic's Intelligent Auto mode (iA), now co-opted by nearly every other rival compact in its class, and which allows users to simply point the camera at a scene and a subject and have the FP8 automatically choose the most appropriate settings. No need for beginners to bother manually selecting macro mode when the camera will do it for you.

This time iA handily has its own button to the right of the shutter release that lets photographers quickly flip between this setting and whichever alternative shooting mode was previously selected with a press of the dedicated "mode" button top left of the back plate.

The other capture mode choices are "normal" auto along with 28 scene modes and an additional My Scene mode, which provides a shortcut to one scene option in particular - portrait for example. Ticking the boxes for the latest must haves Panasonic has also included a 1280 x 720 pixels HD video shooting option, though the optical zoom is "frozen" at the point recording begins so cannot be adjusted mid-filming, which is limiting.

Curiously, and while we're having a grumble, there's no automatic cover protecting the FP8's lens glass when the camera is not in use, meaning that it inadvertently attracts smudges and fingerprints when extracting the camera from pocket or bag. Also, the lens location top right of the faceplate, as with Sony Cyber-shots, ensures the odd finger-end occasionally creeps into shot - most likely to happen if handing the camera to someone else for that quick you-and-your-mates holiday snap. Similarly, middle fingers can get in the way of the lozenge-shaped integral flash with a maximum 5.5 metre range at the front. Such compromises are perhaps inevitable when bringing a smaller compact to market.

For those wanting to forego the use of flash to achieve more natural looking results, a manually selectable range of a broader than usual ISO 80 through ISO 1600 is offered, with an only-if-you're-desperate boosted option of up to ISO 6400 equivalent accessed via High Sensitivity scene mode.

Thankfully then the camera's operation is otherwise swift, responsive and reliable. Maximum resolution JPEGS are written to memory - removable SD or SDHC card or 40MB internal cache - in a couple of seconds, metering mostly on the money. Smooth and steady is the best way of describing the zoom action, lens travelling from maximum wide angle to extreme telephoto in around 3 seconds.

Maximising user-friendly functionality, Panasonic has provided a "Q Menu" (Quick Menu) button secreted away in the bottom right hand corner of the backplate and providing a shortcut to key shooting settings via a toolbar running across the top of the LCD screen. This then provides drop down user-selectable options that furthers the camera's overall user-friendly feel.

Verdict:

Despite our reservations about some aspects of the FP8's functionality, outdoors with plenty of light around the camera is able to pick up a fair amount of detail and deliver crisp, sharply focused results. Indoors, switch off the flash to avoid giving your subjects that rabbit-in-the-headlights look and soft images are the inevitable result, even with OIS activated.

Staying with low light operation, even images at ISO 400 bear witness to speckles of image noise creeping in, if, to be fair, shots up to and including ISO 800 remain perfectly usable; higher than this is best avoided. So go near that High Sensitivity scene option at your peril.

Colour wise, we preferred the boosted saturation provided by selecting the "vivid" option to the camera's occasionally drab default setting, the former often closer to the actual scene anyway. So make a few rudimentary adjustments and this camera can deliver the goods.

Ultimately what you're getting with the Lumix DMC-FP8 is a fairly standard line up of features, but at a premium price thanks to that metal build and swish/samey styling. Incidentally, for completists the FP8 is available in red, black or silver bodied versions, distracting further from the fact that while there's not a lot that's new about the FP8 it's a competent example of its kind anyway.

Kodak?has announced a new touchscreen enabled digital camera at?CES?in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

The new model, called the Kodak Slice will feature a 3.5-inch touchscreen display on the back, come with a 14MP CCD sensor and 5x Schneider-Kreuznach lens, and like the Sony Cybershot offerings lets users search up to 5000 images that can be stored on its internal memory.

Getting down with the social networking space, users will be able to press the standard Kodak share button to have the camera automatically share with Facebook, Kodak Gallery, Flickr, YouTube sites and e-mail when it's next connected to a computer.

Video comes in the guise of 720p/30fps HD video capture and Kodak’s Smart Capture feature, will, according to the company "analyse scenes and automatically adjust camera settings to deliver beautiful pictures more often". The Slice also offers built-in optical image stabilisation.

The Kodak Slice touchscreen camera will be available in black, nickel and radish for $349.95 beginning in April 2010. Best Buy will initially be the exclusive retailer for in-store sales. The Kodak Slice touchscreen camera will also be sold online at Amazon.com and Kodak.com.?

UPDATE: it will cost??299.99 in the UK and be available from April 2010.

Kodak?has just announced an update to its?Zi8 camcorder?at?CES?in Las Vegas on Tuesday.?The new offering will be called the Kodak PlaySport and offers a more rugged, durable casing than the Zi8.?

Those worried that such a move will create a dumbed down offering shouldn't worry. Looking at the specs from Kodak, it won't be skimping on the feature set with 1080p video, Facebook and YouTube uploading tools and new underwater capabilities up to 10 feet.

We'd like to tell you that Canon has just launched the most amazing cutting-edge compact cameras to date. They haven't. Mid-range is as good as it gets this afternoon, so if you want something more exciting from the Japanese imaging giants, then take a look at the LEGRIA camcorders instead.

What the company has done with the stills shooters today is quite interesting for other reasons. Essentially, there are two new models and both have slightly nerfed, cheaper versions available only at Argos.

The more basic is the PowerShot A495 model which features a 10-megapixel sensor, 18 scene modes, a 2.5-inch LCD, video capture at VGA quality, 3.3x optical zoom and runs on AA batteries. The Argos exclusive PowerShot A490 is the same but only available in silver, rather than the blue and red flourish the other model enjoys, and there's just the 13 scenes to play with.

For the other pair, it's the PowerShot A3100 IS and PowerShot A3000 IS both of which have the Digic III processor, 4x optical zoom, optical image stabilisation, 2.7-inch LCD screens, VGA video capture, Li-ion power as well as YouTube integration.

The difference this time is that the A3100 IS has a 12.1-megapixel sensor and the A3000 just the 10 inches to play with.

All four models feature face detection, low light shooting modes, smart scene detection and Canon's iContrast mode to properly process light and dark areas of your images. They also feature support for both SDHC and SDXC memory cards and the latter of these offers up to 2TB of storage.

They all go on sale from next month. Prices and pictures to follow.

Canon has launched a load of LEGRIA camcorders at gadget consumers this afternoon with the arrival of four series in the range and many models within them.

The baby of the bunch is the Canon LEGRIA FS300 series which is for those who still feel that standard definition is enough. They still feature a reported long battery life, quick charge and a good set of technologies from Dynamic Image Stabilisation to Video Snapshot and Pre REC function but, if you want the best, then the Canon Legria HF S series is where it's at.

At the top of the tree is the HF S21 with an 8MP, Full HD CMOS sensor, Canon Digic DV III processor, 3.5-inch gesture control LCD touchscreen, dual SDHC card slots, powered optical image stabiliser, EVF, manual control dial and bags of smart modes and technologies thrown in on top.

Take the step down to a 3.3-P CMOS sensor and 2.7-inch LCD, and you get the LEGRIA HF M series which still features plenty of the additional modes found on the HF S21. Finally, there's also the more affordable HF R series which has the more basic functions like Video Snapshot for stills and Smart Auto for instant perfect exposure, but will also allow easy ways to share you video content online.

Sony has continued its charm offensive on the DSLR market with the launch of the Sony Alpha 450. This latest snapper is an enthusiast's entry-level model. That is, it's low end as far as DSLRs go but there's still plenty of features to play with and a certain amount of power to back it up too.

Sony continues the marriage between the BIONZ processor and Exmor CMOS sensor, in this case good for 14.2 megapixels of effective resolution. The Alpha 450 has a healthy ISO range sensitive to low light up to ISO 12800 and the power comes in the 5fps standard shooting, which goes up to 7fps so long as you're happy to have the exposure fixed by the first shot of the volley.

The camera features a fairly standard 9-point AF system and 2.7-inch LCD display on the back, but the other touches that might sit it slightly ahead of some, other entry-level models, are the manual focus trim, the 4-step image stabilisation, the high dynamic range shooting mode, the fact that you get over 1000 shots per charge and the quite reasonable image editing software that Sony's throwing in as well. Not a bad package by the sounds of things.

The Sony Alpha 450 is out from the beginning of next month and, yes, it is compatible with SD/SDHC cards as well as the Sony proprietary memory sticks. Prices when we get them.

You can soon expect to see 14.6-megapixel digi-cams that are capable of capturing 60fps, 1080p video footage, and boasting electronic image stabilisation, thanks to a new sensor from OmniVision.

The new OV14810 for digital still/video cameras and OV14825 for mobile applications could see the digital still camera and digital video camera market converge, meaning you don't need to take two cams into the shower, so to speak.

"With the new OV14810, the DSC and DVC market segments are converging, allowing consumers to have one device for capturing their most important photo and HD video moments", says Devang Patel, senior product marketing manager at OmniVision.

"We also see the mobile phone segment moving to full HD video combined with higher resolution photography. We believe that our high performance OV14810 holds great potential for addressing these developments, and may therefore prove to be highly attractive in multiple market segments".

The OV14810/14825 sensors are due to enter mass production in the second quarter of 2010, meaning a late 2010 launch is likely for consumer products.

The biggest tech show in the world is about to start in Las Vegas and Pocket-lint will be there live, covering all the news as it happens so you know what's what.

We brought you news that this was due back in March last year, but can now confirm the official launch of the Samsung NX10, a Micro Four Thirds-rivalling hybrid DSLR.

The NX10 boasts a 14.6-megapixel sensor, a 3-inch AMOLED display, the claim of the fastest auto focus in its class and the ability to record H.264 720p HD movie footage.

Features include a built-in flash, manual controls, a Smart Auto function, Smart Range for capturing bright areas and dark areas in the same frame, and a Supersonic Dust Reduction system.

Due to be available in "Noble Black" and "Titan Silver" in spring 2010, the camera will be on show at CES, so we'll bring you more from the show floor.

Ricoh's brave new release in the?GXR?is a camera of two halves - literally. With the intention of providing a photographic "solution" that will take digital SLR-like professional quality photographs whilst, unlike a DSLR, being small enough to fit in your pocket, the basic GXR component comprises a camera back replete with high resolution 3-inch LCD screen, operational controls including a shooting mode dial, grip, pop-up flash, plus battery and card compartments.

Onto the front of this slides a separate boxy unit comprising sensor, lens and image processor. Locking tight with a satisfyingly sturdy "clunk", when combined the two halves resemble a rather conventional looking whole. In fact, like most of Ricoh's range, the otherwise utilitarian styling of the GXR makes it seem like it was put together in a Russian car plant during the Cold War.

Yet, defying the previously tried and tested, Ricoh's GXR is presently the only digital camera on which both lens and sensor can be changed in tandem to best suit any given subject, meaning the concept is a revolutionary, bang up-to-date, one.

Ricoh's definition for the GXR is "interchangeable unit camera system", which, while it doesn't exactly trip off the tongue, at least attempts to get to the crux of the matter. Because there's no sensor in the body, the manufacturer argues that its system is expandable like no other, and adds that the idea is currently patented for Ricoh alone, so we're unlikely to see copycat devices for the time being. Both units feel rugged, weighed up individually in the palm and when combined, being of solid-feel magnesium alloy construction like a proper mid-range DSLR. This is, theoretically, a camera that should provide years of service.

Aiming to do battle with the not quite so compact "hybrid" interchangeable lens competitors in Olympus' E-P1, E-P2 and Panasonic GF1, there are presently two swappable lens and sensor combos - or "camera units" - available for the GXR body.

These are a 50mm close up (macro) lens combined with an APS-C sized sensor as found in entry to mid-level DSLRs, making it adept at shooting sharp portraits with attractively defocused backgrounds, plus a 24-72mm (3x) zoom coupled with a 1/1.7-inch CCD sensor as found in Ricoh's flagship GR Digital III compact, a fixed lens alternative.

The two units differ further regarding the resolution offered: 12.3 effective megapixels from the 12.9MP CMOS sensor coupled with the 50mm lens, and 10 effective megapixels from the 10.4MP CCD wedded to the zoom.

Whilst the 50mm option seems to make the most of the GXR's "DSLR in compact form" potential and for us provides the most professional in appearance pictures, the zoom proves to be the no brainer option for those wanting a jack-of-all-trades set up.

Not just the kind of images created but also which features and functions users can get access to alters when attaching differing lens units.

To take one example, in attaching the zoom lens and CCD sensor pairing the user has access to 640 x 480 pixels video. Swap this for the fixed 50mm alternative and resolution jumps to an HD Ready 1280 x 768 pixels, at standard 24 frames per second. While such options are selected via the camera's on-screen menus, they are presented in small narrow type and we found ourselves tabbing through three screens crammed with information to find essential features we wanted at-a-glance, such as light sensitivity/ISO settings.

Fortunately for us then Ricoh has implemented a time saving "Direct" button top left of the LCD at the back that, when pressed, displays a collective overview of the current key settings the user has selected as simplified icons on-screen. Each icon can be highlighted in turn and then the particular setting of that function individually tweaked, saving the need to have to go back and dig through the menu screens as required initially. So though not the most intuitive to use at first, with a bit of familiarity operation of this Ricoh gradually speeds up.

Otherwise the GXR's approach is a slightly more leisurely than a DSLR, and you get the feeling that, as with Sigma's high-end fixed lens DP2 compact and Ricoh's own GR III alternative, it's the more considered user who will reap the greatest reward from the GXR. A case in point: it takes 3 seconds to power up for the first shot from cold. Whilst the common creative quartet of program, shutter priority, aperture priority and manual shooting modes are provided for the more experienced user, beginners (or the plain lazy) can get photographing straight away courtesy of a regular automatic shooting mode found next to them.

Further offered is a Scene Mode setting that gives access to not only video capture - which on most other compacts would have its own obviously separate mode - but also pre-optimised portrait, landscape, sports, night scene, and skew correct (perspective correction) setting. There are three further custom modes found on the same dial, to which photographers can attribute their preferred settings for, once again, faster access.

With the 50mm lens and 12MP sensor unit attached the GXR comes into its own in delivering stunning portraits and detail-rich close ups, though low light and/or busy scenes can stymie the auto focus, prompting us to instead reach for use of the deftly-provided manual focus ring. It can also help to take control of white balance settings, particularly when artificial tungsten light gives any scene an orange wash if left on auto.

The camera doesn't command attention in the same with zoom lens and 10MP sensor attached - a physically smaller overall set up than the fixed lens alternative - but then this is the "everyday" option adaptable to taking photographs of a wide range of subjects.

So who is the Ricoh GXR and its two different lens/sensor/processor options aimed at?

The manufacturer says not just its traditional audience of middle-aged male enthusiasts, but also women and 20- to 30-somethings who likewise want a device that will take great quality pictures but still slip into a handbag or jacket pocket.

Optional accessories include an electronic viewfinder (EVF) that clips onto the camera's hotshoe for creative flexibility - it can for example be angled straight up so the user can compose images looking down, as on a medium format camera, plus flashgun that attaches in the same way, meaning both cannot be used at the same time.

Aside from getting people to buy into a new concept, the biggest potential hurdle for the GXR is the suggested retail price, which at the time of writing is around ?420 just for the GXR body. With the 50mm bolt-on option costing a further ?599 and the 24-72mm alternative ?329, early adopters are looking at an initial outlay of either ?749 or ?1,018 before a single image can be captured. Yes, that’s as much, if not more, than a semi professional digital SLR.

But then Ricoh's GXR is a different beast and isn't going to be bought by anyone as their one and only digital camera. It will work best as a much better quality alternative to carrying around a point and shoot compact and as an almost-as-good alternative to a DSLR proper for enthusiasts and semi pros wanting a back up for their bulkier device.

Verdict:

Ricoh has come the closest yet to delivering DSLR-like quality and versatility in compact form, though the GXR is still too tight a squeeze for a trouser pocket with or without its lens combos attached.

Plus the high price of initial set up may have all but the most ardent photo enthusiast waiting until the cost comes down.

But if you do have sufficient funds, for camera nuts this will be a dream come true.
