Full Review

It's not an easy task to review something ostensibly identical to another you've looked at before but that's pretty much what we're faced with by the 3rd generation AppleiPod touch. The first thing you'll notice when you break through the wrappings, the sellotape and the box and finally get the device into your hands is that it's true. It doesn't have a camera. There's even a blank space on the otherwise perfect mirrored back where the one on the iPhone would normally be, and that pretty much sets the standard. You just have to trust that all the technological advancements are on the inside.

The iPod touch still measures an iPhone but slimmer 110 × 61.8 × 8.5 mm. It still weighs the same 115g. It still has a beautifully crisp and pixel dense 3.5-inch 380 x 320 colour screen in a 3:2 aspect and it still skates on the edge of not supporting enough file types with just AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, Audible, MP3, WAV, Protected AAC in its audio arsenal; BMP, JPEG, TIFF, GIF for images and just MPEG on the video front. In fact, the only difference you'll notice on the outside is that now, you can get one with the legend "64GB" etched into it. After every other disappointment it nearly makes your day.

That said, the iPod touch is still a heartbreakingly beautiful thing to hold, arguably more so than the iPhone with its even more svelte form and simply delicious weight. It's just the right size to slip into your jeans pocket and almost forget that it's there; a breathtaking feat of engineering.

So, how about the stuff you don't see? Well, the biggest bump for the third generation is at the heart of the device - the CPU and the RAM. Both have been raised to match the iPhone 3GS, so it's now packed with a 833MHz ARM-Cortex 8 processor that's been underclocked to 600MHz most likely to protect the battery life. As it goes, the battery has dropped a little on the last incarnation going down from 36 hours for audio to 30 - either the result of a more realistic estimate than the first time or quite possibly because of having more power-hungry insides.

The performance is indeed far smoother as Apple has said. The approximation given is 50% faster and, although in practice it's a tricky thing to measure, the experience isnoticeably better. Scolling about from screen to screen on the device has even an edge on the 3GS but the boost is at its most obvious when running the faster game apps now able to render high speed action all the smoother.

The second nice advance is the doubling of the flash memory to a now far more substantial 64GB touted as enough to hold 14,000 songs or 80 hours of video depending on your quality options. It comes at quite the high price of £299 and begins to make one wonder if it isn't worth splashing out the extra to get an iPhone. If you're happier with a 32GB model, you'll be pleased to see it costing fractionally more than the now ceased 16GB at £229 and suddenly the 8GB version looks very cheap indeed at just £149. Probably best hold back on the videos with that one though.

One strange pleasure of all iPods is that they arrive charged and ready to go. There's nothing quite like the agony of having to wait eight hours for something to fully power up before you're allowed to turn it on, particularly after all the excitement of getting it home in the first place. Of course, the other bonus with the 3rd gen touch is that not only is it charged but it also comes loaded with the iPhone OS 3.1 software. It's not quite the jump for joy moment it could be seeing as the price has just been reduced to £2.99 but you learn to be grateful for small mercies.

The software brings Voice Control as directed from the microphone of the legendarily bland headphones. The range of phrasing understood by the device is initially impressive but drops slightly below company track record after being told that it doesn't recognise the phrase "U2" for the fourth time. Novelty-ware aside, the addition of the Genius Mixes feature from iTunes 9 along with the Genius Playlists from the version before is a welcome bonus to the handheld. Doubtless the LP software will follow soon.

Verdict

All Apple could really have done to make the 3rd generation iPod touch significantly better was to add a camera or something else impossible like the ability to make your dinner. There's a temptation to slate the device for not being different enough but, at the end of the day, it's a decision that needs to stand on its own. The question is should you buy it and the answer is whole-heatedly - yes. Those with a second gen model need not apply but if you're looking for a top endPMP, then this is it, certainly until we get a good look at the Zune HD . It's quite expensive but then that's to be expected and, for the time being, it's still the best gadget in its class and, for the record, none of its other competitors have a camera either.

As a gaming device, it's still a long way behind the PSP and DSi but that's got as much to do with the games as anything else. So, if you're looking for purely that purpose, then it's not the one for you. As a PMP, though, look no further - especially with the launch of the Spotify app for iPhone.

  • Why today do you need to carry about a separate MP3/4 player, when you can have smartphones with this ability built in? It's the same boring old design as the old and tired iPhone. The same old and boring interface. Old hat rebadged in something not that different from what they offered before!

Remember the story about the Emperors New Clothes? I feel like the boy who can see he is really naked. I suppose as it is your job to report on new gadgets, that you get excited about rubbish like this.

I have increasingly believed that it is only idiots that buy Apple products, my view is only strengthened with every Apple related story on this site. Sooner or later someone is going to see (as did the boy in the emporers new clothes) that there is very little to what Apple is actually offering us. Until that day, do nopt expect me or other 'independantly minded' people getting too caught up in your minor Apple excitements.

  • @ Tony,
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. It would seem that everyone but you has loved the ipod touch / iphone interface, since the day the first generations came out. That includes me, and the last iPod I owned was the third generation nano (which went through the wash about a year ago)

The answer to your first question is, "why carry around an expensive smartphone when you can buy a phone that comes free with the contract and buy an expensive ipod for your music, email, etc? What I've got right now is a samsung phone that basically makes calls and thats it. Its nice and durable, which is nice because it goes with me everywhere. Its been through the wash twice and fallen in a pile of red hot coals, and still lives on. That covers my phone needs. I plan on buying the new ipod touch in a few days, which covers my music, gaming, movies, podcasts, email, the list goes on. It also covers my need for a nice and intuitive UI that's easy to use and VERY responsive.

    The way I see it:
Free phone + $300 32gb iPod touch > expensive smartphone with a UI that doesn't compare to iPod touch and doesn't have access to 65,000 apps and can't hold nearly enough content to compare with 32gb.

P.S. This is from the point of view of a person who has never owned an iPod touch, but has used them enough to get the feel of it. If I had owned a 2nd gen. iPod touch, I definitely would not be upgrading because there isn't enough change from 2nd to 3rd generation to justify it.

  • do you think that maybe an itouch with a camera will come out soon? cause I bought the itouch first generation and like a month later it came out with the second generation. I want to upgrade it, but if a new one with a camera is oging to come out within a month or so I want to wait. Should I wait or not? cause i broke my old one so i've been music less for a while now. • Don't wait for a iPod Touch with a camera in 2009 or early 2010. It won't happen. Apple releases their line of players only once a year, so if they plan to put a camera on the 4th generation, it would probably in September 2010. Posted by Yv, Canada
  • hmmm, thank you, but what hapened iwth the first and second generation?? I was really pissed when apple announced a new one like month after. Posted by saraq, united states
  • @Tony, yeah that's right. Everyone else with an iPod is dumb and you're the smart one. *rolling eyes* We've all been duped except you ;-)

You could say the iPod touch's shape is boring etc., but it's another to say everyone else is falling for something stupid.

By the way, I see no point in me getting a smartphone but I like to have an MP3 player. My cellphone bill costs only US$20 a year. That's right,--a year! That's because I only use my cellphone once in a while for emergency purposes when travelling. Besides that, I don't like to be tethered. And, to pay a monthly fee of $50+ just to have a smartphone and not use it would be silly. So, I forgo the smartphone and go with an iPod touch.

  • "Play songs by U2.". Worked for me on my 3GS. Posted by Group51, UK
  • Ah, that's the $64,000 question Leon. I suspect not but that doesn't stop plenty of people in the UK buying a Zune. You just don't get all the services you could in the US. Posted by Dan Sung, United Kingdom
  • @ Sykes...well..yeah..you are all dumb, maybe not dumb but most certainly easily swayed by hype. iPods have plummeted in quality since they left the recording studio, where they started life. The iPod as we know it now is the quintessential tale of style over substance. An over-rated device with a few good gimmicks and a UI to die for (admittedly). This goes for the iPhone as well...the UI and the app store are the only things that really set it apart and it's supremacy in the UI field cannot last for much longer....but you gotta love those apps though! In the end they are just gimmicks. Apple are really going to have come with it we they re-up the iPhone for the 4th time...which will probably be in a couple of days ;-) Posted by KOTJ, UK

  • The way I see it, on the smartphone/separate music player front is I would rather carry a music player, in addition to my phone. But, I'm on Verizon, nice smart phones are not an option. My phone does play music, but the battery barely lasts, and I'd much rather have something nice for my portable entertainment.

I plan on buying myself an ipod touch by December as a self birthday present. I didn't really know much about them until I decided to see exactly what the ipod touch could do, after seeing my aunt's iphone. I was impressed, despite being a hardcore PC person.
Not that I'm going to run out and buy a mac anytime soon. XD

I'd like to see more about it's ability to surf the web first, though. I can't seem to find a good review on that aspect.

  • I have a Smartphone (se p1i till last week, now 5530) I do all my mails and stuff on the smartphone (and of course) all the talking AND have my Touch with me ALL the time! Would you watch Movies or play Games or listen to Music if you're battery power is really low? I wouldnt care on my touch. Seriously, and most Smartphones (Except n97) lack a really good 3d engine for games support, so i do all that stuff on my touch...
    Thats just my opinion
    Cheers
