Full Review

The KS360 is a compact side-slider, measuring 101.5 x 51 x 16.8mm. Whilst compact, it is rather thick by modern standards because it slides open in landscape format to reveal a full QWERTY keypad. Our review sample was a pre-production model in red and black and customised for the Orange network.

The front of the KS360 is dominated by the 2.4in (240 x 320) QVGA screen, which is a respectable size for this phone and is clear and bright. Below the screen are a number of control buttons, basically to select on-screen options and navigate menus, as well as the normal calling buttons. The most interesting, perhaps, is the button that looks like someone using a calculator.

This is in fact the option to enable the touchscreen dialling option. A keypad appears on the screen so you can directly enter the number which works reasonably well if your fingers are not too fat. You can also switch to text entry which will let you then search your contacts, although the text entry is the primitive multi-press type rather than predictive, and is a little clunky to use.

Slide handset open and you are presented with the neat QWERTY keypad in landscape format and the display rotates accordingly. It is a good positive slide action and the quality can’t be faulted here.

The QWERTY keypad also features numbers for dialling in this aspect, as well as navigation keys for using the menus. You’ll also find a shortcut to messaging which is welcome indeed. Whilst in the topic of messaging, the KS360 is a text messenger's dream – yes, you have to move away from your normal predictive text option, but you can bash out messages double-thumbed at incredible speed. The backlighting is a little uneven across the keys, but this is no big issue.

There are some minor foibles with the keypad, however, such as slightly confusing delivery of characters. You can access alternative characters by pressing and holding a key – you can then cycle through the options, but not the alternative symbol printed on the key. So, if you press and hold "A" you cycle through various accented versions, but you don’t get the "4" that also sits on the key. Press and hold toggles the alternative characters so you’ll then have to press and hold to return to the standard character. Sounds confusing, and it does take some getting used to.

There is also a "Fn" function button that will allow you to access the additional characters printed on the keys as well as take advantage of the direction arrows for navigation in a message. A separate "Sym" symbol key give you access to a whole host of symbols if you don’t fancy the press and hold option. What this all boils down to is that if you need a particular character, you can probably find it here, but in everyday usage things run pretty smoothly.

There is a slight problem with navigation once the phone is open. Basically on most screens you are presented with three shortcut options which range across the bottom of the screen. In portrait mode this is no problem as you have keys to do this, but in landscape there is no dedicated key for the central shortcut. On some occasions this can be selected using the OK/enter key, but in messaging this doesn’t work – it gives you a carriage return – so you have to take a more convoluted route to achieve the same result.

Moving around the handset you’ll find an external microSD slot to expand on the meagre 15MB internal offering. There is no 3.5mm jack, so you’ll have to use the standard LG headset, unless you take the Bluetooth option. You’ll also find Orange Music included (in the Orange model) so you can buy tracks on the fly.

Around the back of the phone is the standard 2MP camera, with a dedicated shutter button and on-screen menus that you can navigate with the face keys, making that KS360 a pleasure to use as a quick snapper – although there is no lens cover so it will be quickly scratched up in a pocket or bag and no flash.

Giving a nod to the social pent of this handset, on our Orange review sample, there was an interesting option for a homepage called "Live square" which featured a number of characters. As calls and texts come in, these characters become whoever you are swapping texts with, so from here you can see who you have new messages from – great if you often have multiple conversations running concurrently. You can also read back your messages in conversation style, grouped together, rather than as individual messages.

As to software options for social butterflies you’ll find Orange Messenger, although you’ll have to pay extra for this service and the bundled web browser is basic, but you could always download an alternative. However, the social elements aren’t greatly supported by the hardware. This is a standard tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone, so online activity will be hampered in the absence of any 3G option. It is also a shame that there is no Wi-Fi to take advantage the growing number of free Wi-Fi options out there.

Verdict

LG did warn us that the phone might be a little slow because it was a pre-production sample, but encouragingly we didn’t encounter any problems. The touchscreen utilisation is better than in previous phones from LG and is pretty straight-forward to use, but limited only to the dialling and text functions described here.

Overall, we like the KS360. The feel is one of a good quality phone, well built and interestingly designed. The keypad works well and does allow you to bash out quick messages, but there are a few quirks with text entry and navigation of menus in landscape mode that you’ll have to get used to.

  • hi, ive just read he review for the new LG phone and im glad its good because i am thinking of buying one but i coudnt really think to how it worked. if i get one ill rite a review. Posted by kymberly tully , united kingdom
  • I own one. Amazing phone. I was just confused when I didn't know what the live square was doing. Does anyone know of any way i can get rid of the little people dancing around with numbers underneath them> there are contacts underneath the little people that I do not know. Posted by Peter, Uk
  • From what I can remember, if you dive into the settings you can disable Live Square as well as reset it. I found it filled up with my most frequent contacts, so wasn't a problem. Posted by chrishall, United Kingdom
  • Hey, I am thinking about buying the phone. but i am so use to the normal type texting buttons. How easy is it to getting use to the GWERTY keyboard? I am wanting a phone that is always on the move with good camera, loud speaker and internet access. Is this the phone? Posted by Lee Kirk, United Kingdom, London
  • i want this phone its GORGEOS Posted by megan, england
  • im gettin this phone in about a weeks timee is the camera gud?? and wot bout the key-board is it easy to type on it even if its not im still gettin it coz iss bufff loolz xxxxxx Posted by Jasmine, London, UK
  • Hi i got this phone today and wanted to let everyone know what its like because i cant find a proper or good enough review.

The keyboard is easy to get to know after about an hour or so .
For a 2 mega pixel camer the picture is very clear and good.
The volume is fantastic just as loud as a sony ericson.
The touch pad is only active when you
    - dial a number and u can type in letter with the touchpad to search a number.
You cannot text or navigate with the touchpad but it makes no difference.

The camera doesnt have a flash or frames but it does have effects etc.
The memory isnt very good but a 4gb micro sd card can be inserted.
The usb gives it an easy way to add songs or photos or documents.
The menu is stylish and the contacts is easy to see.

Overall id give the phone 10/10
If you have any other questions just ask and ill respond asap.

  • I am replacing my Sony Ericsson w580i with this LG KS360 mobile phone and I would like to know whether or not music taken from a CD is playable on the LG as I know that some mobile phones wont take these songs. Also, is the mp3 player on the LG as good as a Sony Walkman?? Posted by Kirsty, York
  • Kirsty - whether you can listen to music ripped from a CD will depend on the format you save it in. MP3 is your best bet. As there is not much internal memory, you might want to put it straight onto a microSD card and slot that into your phone.

Comparing the MP3 player a Sony Ericsson phone will probably come down to the headphones in the box. The LG has no 3.5mm headphone jack, so you'll have to use those provided. The Walkman range of phones are designed for music so the players are pretty good, whereas the KS360 is really designed around text messaging.

  • Have had this phone for about a week now so have pretty much decided whats good and bad!

    - The keyboard is pretty quirky to say the least. At first it was kinda hard to type but now im pretty fast at it - practice makes perfect
    - Camera is average, nothign special but it was never advertised as a camera phone soo it is adequate, although flash would have been nice. Also no cover for actual lens so will probably scratch sooner or later.
    - My only complaint is about the headphones. The volume is sooo quiet, nothing compared to that of a sony ericsson (my previous phone was a Walkman 580i). It would have been been better with a 3.5 mm headphone jack then I could use my own headphones :/
    - I've only just recently discovered the Live Square, at first it confused me because I had strange little people dancing round my screen but now I see its a handy tool to organise people you've been in contact with recently - cute feature!
    - Very aesthetically pleasing and sliding motion is sleek and smooth.
    - Touchscreen when not slide open is available, can only use to input numbers and letters when searching for a contact.
    - Not much memory but can insert up to 4GB MicroSD card

Overall good phone, I'd wouldn't recommend for people who want a really good camera or prodominently music phone but a god alrounder definetely!

  • New mobile phones = who cares.

"hello Im on my way home"

    "great".

What a waste of everyones time and money and tbh they just get fatter and uglier!
    Posted by Bob Suruncal, UK
  • Sorry to people who always have to have the latest phone it really is pointless. Imagine your home phone going under this much rigorous scrutiny - they dont! Its a bit of a joke all they do is talk to people and maybe surf the net or take pictures or play music - whoopedoo - they were doing this 2 years ago surely the best phone is the smallest and lightest with the clearest voice, longest battery life, which looks great . Why do people buy these iphone wannabes which (lets be honest the iphone is too big anyway) are just bricks! 4 years ago the race was on to create thin and slick - nowadays its like weve all gone mad for these massive phones! Posted by Jim Bowen, UK
  • Where can i buy this??? its sold out everywhere, does anyone know where i can get a pink one?? Posted by Fifi, Trinidad
  • This phone is great.
I have it but you really need to get a 4GB memory card for it otherwise you can only get like 4 songs on it. Its really good and easy to use and if you go on orange music player while your playing a song and then you can click options and then minimize and then you can do other things.
    Yes headphones are included.
Orange do the pink one but I prefer the blue.
Does anyone know that when you add a song on to it of the computer or through bluetooth if you can set it to go straight to the external memory?
Because other wise you can only fit 3 songs on it then you have to disconnect it and then you have to move them all then start again
    It really is worth buying...
    :D

  • Had the phone for a week. Had to reset twice as it stopped connecting to bluetooth the first time and the second time the speaker switched off (as though it was using my bluetooth headset), but even switching bluetooth off didn't help.

Its transfer speed using the USB cable is also amazingly slow. The menu system has not been thought out for the slide out keyboard, with too many menu options obviously being set up for quick selection via the (non existent) physical keypad. The camera functions are very annoying, constantly bugging you to send the picture via before you can take another shot.

  • Hey Mum, how's the 'stan? When I tested the phone I used an Orange SIM (as I almost always do), so Live Square worked as it should. I've not tried the KS360 on a different carrier, but I was talking to LG on Monday and they said that the Live Square will be in the 3G successor, the GW520, so I'd say yes. But it is only software, so other carriers could easily remove it. Posted by chrishall, United Kingdom
  • Ok, im sorry. Theres just so much irrelevant drivle on this site. It gets annoying. Infact, instead of apologizing to you losers im going to thank Chrishall (Chris Hall). But other people should STOP POSTING CRAP. WE KNOW THE PHONE IS GOOD, IT WAS GIVEN 5 STARS, THIS IS TO ASK QUESTIONS.

  • Hey! I've got this phone! It's really good, if you have big thumbs or fingers dont get it though!
    Two Questions:
-I have it on orange coz it has an orange SIM, but the phone is not locked on orange! Can i still get Live Square, it seems a bit tight if i cant get it, especially as i have actually got an orange SIM in it, could i phone up orange and they would download it onto my phone? PLease Reply soon!!
-How do you get onto MSN? By MSN i mean windows live messenger!
    Posted by Laura, Llanelli, UK
  • Hi its the Mum here. Laura, LG ks360 doesnt have 3g, so you will need a wifi to get nternet let alone msn.
And Orange would be reluctant to do anything for a customer beyond answer questions so the likley hood they will download it for you is low.

Also, there was a scissor sisters sond written about someone called Laura. Even though i am a hetro sexual mum i am open to a bit of gay.

I check my emails, sign into msn and check my myspace at anytime of the day....
(and yes, I can listen to music whilst doing so!)

Without the switching off, it's perfect! ;D

  • i have a sandisk memory card in mine and it workd perfectly well.
i have 176 songs and 20 photos on it at the mo, and the memory
card is only 18% full. so i could get alot more on it.

and to turn off the volume on my keys i go
    settings>profiles>general>personalize>touch&key feedback> touch & keys tones.

    hopes this helps. :)
