If you’re thinking of adding a webcam to your PC for video messaging it often pays to opt for a camera with a strong sensor.
This 1.3-megapixel sensor offers a standard 1280 x 1024 pixels, which is more than enough for most people. However, it does drop to recorded video to a meagre 640 x 480 pixels. That said, you do get 30fps, which is better than average.
At £18 (inc. VAT) this is the cheapest webcam we’ve ever come across but that doesn’t mean MSI has simply put out a second-rate product. It’s got a great look, which looks like a pebble and has a funky look to it with blue lights.
The design has been well thought through as the mount incorporates a clip, so can either be sat on your PC's monitor, or attached to the lid of your notebook. The camera itself isn’t attached to the clip, instead it’s magnetised so you can get it to take the angle that suits you best.
Software included is AMCap, which is a simple video capture tool and there is also MyGuard, which can be set up to use the camera as a home CCTV camera.
Image quality is reasonable for messaging purposes but its a little dull and washed out for anyone wanting a professional finish.
Verdict
If you’re looking for a webcam for professional video conferencing, the MSI StarCam Genie is a little too basic but as a home monitor or simply for staying in touch with family and friends, it’s a great tool at the right price.
