It's amazing how Nokia can create two handsets with the same name and yet how they can be so very different in their approach. So is the slide the better of the two 6500 models, or is the classic the one that you should be going for?

The Nokia 6500 slide is the other side to the Nokia 6500 Classic. Sporting, you guessed it, a slider design, the form factor difference is the only change you'll see.

The bulkier phone (96.5 x 46.5 x 16.4mm) takes in the larger size not only so it can offer a slider design, but so it can fit in a 3 megapixel camera complete with Carl Zeiss optics, an auto focus and 8x digital zoom.

But that's not all you'll get, for that extra bulk you also get a video camera for video calling via the 3G connectivity on the phone and a TV out socket you can you share you images, music and video via a nearby TV similar to some of the Samsung mobile phones.

If that wasn't enough the extra size also gives you a couple of extra buttons like a dedicated camera shutter button, a 3.5mm headphone jack, volume controls, a micro USB dongle so you can connect it easily to your PC for data transfer and a separate charging socket.

In fact the only real similarity with the Nokia 6500 classic is that the phone runs the same Symbian S40 3rd edition operating system on it.

Keys are comfortable to use and squarer than the 6500 Classic opting instead for a fuller flatter design.

The only other thing to note is that here you get a 256MB microSD card (not hot swappable) instead of the impressive 1GB of memory in the 6500 classic.

Verdict

After playing with the Nokia 6500 slide for over a week, it merely comes across as a poor mans Nokia N95. The design is very similar, hence the reference, but the feature set no way near as fulfilling: no 5 megapixel camera, no dedicated music player, no GPS, no 8GB of on-board storage.

While the simplicity angle works well on the Nokia 6500 classic, here you come away wanting more for your bulky design.

That's not to say the phone, complete with its 3 megapixel camera doesn't perform well, because it does, it just doesn't leave you with the same satisfaction the classic does.

  • Hey guyz, well, I don't write reviews but I must say, I am scared by this Nokia 6500 Slide. A totally bad phone. No loud ringtones. Irritating Sound Quality. Poor network signals. No brightness controls. Tough to slide slider. Scratchy keypad after a few days. Slow reaction. Unwanted paths. Looks like stoneage technology. The camera is good only during the day. No camera cover. The only time I feel good is when I put it in the closet and hit the bed. Posted by Mansoor Khan, India
  • I'm bucking the trend. you two must have dodgy phones or something cos mine is loud if i want to set it to be, the sound quality is incredible, the screen is bright and clear even in the sunshine. Network signal is network dependant but it's bettering my previous Sony Ericsson w850. It reacts quick enough for mem the predictive text works well out of the box and it looks gorgeous in black and brushed aluminium casr that has withstood a few knocks so far.I prefer it to my "plasticky" N95 which broke in a week. Nice one Nokia. Posted by Steve E, UK

  • I am also having problems with the volume on the Nokia 6500 slide, it does not go up loud enough so I can't hear incoming calls unless I am in the same room as the phone. Posted by Sarah Statham, UK
  • utter CRAP!! i have one, keeps restarting itself, bad sound quality at high volume, camera is the only ok feature, would not at all reccomend to even my worst enemy, as i havent had nokia for a few years i thought id try them as they use to be good, but as i have found out my sony ericsson's were the best, with my k800i, it lasted around 2 year's, this phone was very very tough, the same with the 3 other sony ericssons i have had,
my opinion DO NOT BUY NOKIA ESPECIALLY THE 6500 SLIDE!!
also battery life in all new nokia's seem's to be crap compared to sony ericsson too.
if you have one, very very good luck indeed . . . and get rid asap.

  • Hi, i'm having really bad problems with mine too and would say it is the worst phone by far that i have ever owned. It keeps resetting to the factory settings so i lose my screen saver picture and ringtone, i keep losing connection during calls which is really frustrating yet my signal is still strong and i am about to smash it to bits cos it is so frustrating. I am with 3G so am going to contact them and request a new phone beause this is diabolical. DO NOT BUY A NOKIA 6500 SLIDE!!!! Posted by Leeanne Alton, UK
  • Okay some nasty reviews about the slide, I mean mine has a great battery life and the sound seems fine my only problem is that there is never any signal! ever! 750 free mins to use a month and i doubt i could use that for lack of signal, the other major major concern is that when the phone is nearing the end of its battery life it fucking decides to burn me! the stupid metal backing the the phone heats up so much you cant actually hold it, so what do i do, call up 3.. obviously get through to India and speak to the rudest person i have ever spoke to who claims he is called "john" and wont give a last name. im going back to my k800i and screw the 18 month contract, what they gonna do send "john" after me? so thanks for a shite service and phone 3... fuck you 3! fuck you.
