Can newcomer Fly Mobile impress with its latest pre-paid handset in the UK? We take a closer look.

Available exclusively from Woolworths in the UK, the Fly Mobile SL600 is trying to appeal to the Pick and Mix market with a dirt cheap price and a host of features including a 2 megapixel camera and stereo Bluetooth.

In fact, for your money, you get quite a lot from the slider design that looks like the Samsung D500 from many moons ago.

That design is well-built and fairly solid for the price and the interface is simple to use and again looks like the Samsung offering before it switched over to the Ultra platform that its phones currently support.

With a 2 megapixel camera you'll be able to snap images up to 1600 x 1200-pixels and this is fine for web use or sharing funny moments with friends down the pub. Not being a camera-focused device there is no focusing options, although to do get an LED flash light for dark situations. There is also video recording support.

When it comes to music, the SL600 offers MP3 software and Stereo Bluetooth support so you can ditch the wires.

Sadly the music performance isn't great out of the box, however you can improve this by buying a better set of headphones. Problem solved.

Also featured on the SL600 is an FM radio that lets users record live radio at the touch of a button or schedule a recording to start at a certain time.

Recordings can be saved to the phone's internal memory or a microSD card.

While Fly Mobile claim this to be a world's first we guess they're not that au fait with the Nokia 3300 that can record from the integrated FM radio, and has been able to do so for sometime. Still it's a good feature to have and one that is welcomed in the £60 price tag.

Verdict

Considering the price, the Fly Mobile SL600 is a surprising good offering for just £60.

Of course if you've still got your Samsung D500 or D600 kicking around from 2 years ago then you won't notice any real difference, but for those on a budget, you'll struggle to beat this offering.

  • First of all it is not easy to find out you, if you do not have internet as your Nehru place customer care do not know anything about you.
Your services made me not to believe on fancy advertisement of warranty from fly, after less than 6 months of using mobile, charging pad was not working. I took them to service center but first their pathetic attitude and then not to repair under warranty made things worse. Initially they said I have to pay Rs. 350 (even in warranty period) and said they will inform me about further status. After no reply after a week, I called again and they said that you have to pay around 3700/- for the repair, that is around 75% of the cost of mobile. Who will pay again Rs. 3700 for such bad quality mobile and fraud services? My mobile cost was Rs. 5119.00.
What is your credibility in warranty period if you are asking for 75% just for repair?

  • I've been using SL600 since last 1 year and i'm fully satisfied with the phone.it's features are very good and the phone is durable even though its slider. Moreover the colours and picture quality of the images it takes is very good.I've never had a problem with its software like u have to face with nokia. I've downloaded games and tones from the internet and it works fine with thm..Great product,my regards to Fly's R&D team. Posted by Ashwani Kumar, Wales,U.K.

  • bought mine of ebay for £20, I wanted the fm recording feature for my favourite radio 4 comedy programs. Unlocking seems to be a bitch so i bought a vodaphone card. It does not like opera browser, I'm on my third attempt to install on a different version.

This phone has really crappy headset becuase fly want you to buy their wierd headset for £5. Cann't get the radio to output to the onboard speaker which is really good, just can't get the darn thing to work with the radio, this would be a real iphone killer on the cheap if fly hadn't gypoored out.

Bluetooth is excellent as are most features. overall I will think this is phone could be the biz, fly have pulled off a momentous achievement for the prices YET FAILED the last 10 yards. Pity could have been great.

Fly dev team should ditch the crap headphone jack. hook up the speaker to the radio and place the SD card above the battery preferable on the outer case.

Shame.....these guys will be ones to watch if they stop compromising on building in stupid hardware interfaces.
