Supposedly women have mood swings. Who would have thought it hey? Well if women can have mood swings, then so can your phone and that's the idea behind Sony Ericsson's new handset the Sony Ericsson S500i.

But does that mean it's sulky and frustrating or happy and easy to use? We get calling to find out.

The mood swings come in the guise of themes the phone has and in particular the control of two led lights on the side of the handset.

Clearly aimed at a female audience, the small 14mm thick slider is tidy and compact. Sliding the slider design up reveals a small keypad and the unit we had was a black and Mysterious Green, although you can get a Spring Yellow version.

Design-wise the keypad isn't as adventurous or retro as the company's Walkman or Cyber-shot ranges and for us it was a welcomed move.

So to that mood stuff, well basically it's a series of theme settings that change with the time and the date. January's colours are cold, Spring's warm and December red with berries. While the time changes the colours further with an emphasis on lighter colours for the morning and darker colours to represent evening.

There is nothing too clever about it, it's not based on light or temperature settings for example, however like the Samsung backgrounds that change depending on what city you are in (Big Ben for London, the Eiffel Tower for Paris) it is quite cute (hence the female audience reference earlier).

Taking this theme business one step further, the lights on the side of the phone also change accordingly and you can even go as far as setting them to match different actions and callers. If it's the mother-in-law you can have Fire red, while Mrs Pocket-lint could get a TuttiFrutti.

Themes and light shows aside, other features on the phone include a 2 megapixel digital camera revealed when sliding that slider and the usual array of Sony Ericsson software such as the ability to blog the photo as well as edit the image via Sony Ericsson's PhotoDJ application.

The software is incredibly easy to use and allows you to change everything from setting the light balance, red-eye removal and auto levels all from the phone.

When it comes to other features, music is of course supported and although it might not have the same focus as the Walkman ranges there is plenty here for the music lover including the ability to expand your music via the M2 memory slot on the top of the handset.

A small but nice detail is that the phone vibrates as you scroll over each icon on the main menu screen so you know you've moved to the next icon. It's a tiny detail, but a nice touch.

Verdict

The light mood senses are of course a complete gimmick that has no bearing on whether this phone will make your life easier for using it, however, luckily for Sony Ericsson, it hasn't relied on this being the main function of the phone.

The S500i is a very talented handset that offers plenty to those looking for just a phone rather than a PDA come entertainment device come laptop replacement.

Simple, but nicely packaged.

  • I bought this phone and it kept making these strange beeping noises. What's even weirder was that by pressing a button after the beeps I could hear a voice. Is this normal? The phone looks good but I found that it stopped working at 75ft under water. Also they only had right handed phones and I am left handed which doesn't help. Posted by Dennis Mcdermott, uk

  • I love this phone. I've broken it twice and both times very easy to fix. The slide is very smooth and it doesn't scratch very easily. If you are thinking of having this phone, definitley consider it as it is excellent. Posted by Gemma, Scotland

  • I have had this phone since feb 2008 and to be honest i'm not that happy with it. Firstly i had to buy a memory card for it as it didn't have enough to hold my photo's, secondly, it doesn't matter how many times i call Sony i still can't send and receive picture messages, i'm gutted about that! and thirdly, all of the keys have cracked straight down the middle of each key-it looks dreadful. I was so happy to show off my phone when i first had it but now i pray no one calls me when i'm out in public. I'm so looking forward to getting a new phone for christmas. Posted by Jesse, England
  • Jennie, Scotland don't get the phone i got it in June and its already Posted by sarah, Australia
  • This phone is great to look at on the outside,
but.. i would not recommend this phone.
*all my keys have cracked after 4 months
*all the buttons on the lefthand side of my phone dont work
*the phone front comes off easily meaning the screen falls out.
it can be fixed easily but everytime i pull it out of my pocket i have to fix it before i can use it. I have sent it back before and i didnt get it back for 3 months so im not sending it back again.

I am looooking forward to getting a new one after the contract runs out.

Sony ericsson phones are normally great though! dont be put off sony ericsson!

  • Should i really get this phone ? all the reviews seem discouraging. Though the price and functions are good Posted by andy, kenya
  • I think this phone is the worse phone ive ever had and i advise every-one not to buy it. At first i thought it was great but its rubbish. The keys have cracked, the on and off botton keeps coming off, the back of the end of my phone is broke and the keys are extremley stiff i can hardly write one letter,so i've been using my mums phone. Other than that, the camera is excellient, but the phone its self, isnt good at all. Soph. Posted by Soph, devon
  • I have the Sony Ericsson S500i. It is brilliant! I got it for £95 from ebay. It looks great and its slide is smooth. I haven't had any problems with it so far, i have had it for 3 months. The 2mega pixal camera is great you can add frames and clipart to you pictures. Overall, nice looking phone, handy, good value for money. Posted by natasha, england
  • The soy ericsson s500i has more bad reviews than any other phone, I advise everyone out there not to buy one as after a few months or so, the buttons crack and it makes it hard to press them, the front falls off and the end breakes...

Whoever is lucky enough to stumble accross this comment before buying the sony ericsson s500i is saving great amounts of mony and harassment! All the other sony ericsson models though have really good reviews, both my brothers have got sony ericsson models and they are really good phones... Don't be put off by this particular model.

  • hmmmmmmm!!! thought i ll add a comment too.......... i love this phone(s500i)!!!...... its got excellent Clarity and a very beautiful theme too which makes it really disctinct from the other sony ericsson phones, as this them does not work with any other sony ericsson phones... the sound clarity is good!.......
But, the only problem about this phone is its make.... its very fragile... its keypad cracks.... and also the joystick loses its colour very fast!!..... thats one thing that dissapointed me the most......... if all this are rectified and remodeled with a metallic body i guess this phone will rock .... i abdolutely wud..... i really feel sad to give off this phone and get another 1.... but i have to before its resale value goes down....

  • I have not found any authorized dealer of SonyEricsson in nepal. But you can find original sonyericsson hand sets in nepal in an online shopping website of nepal: www.ejhola.com at very reasonable price. They give you original box pack mobile sets of nokia, samsung at reasonable price. Posted by Ravi, Nepal
  • This fone is very delicate the buttons cracked after a very short time, it once fell and the its chatrging system became inefficient and the worst part is as i was trying to switch simcards yesterday it simply blaced out yet it was fully charged so i dont know whether it was attacked by a virus that just shut it down or something else all i know is am stuck with a dead fone that i have to fix and i cant sell it and i have no fone at the moment so dont buy this fone Posted by joan, Uganda
