Quick review

The good
Superb magnesium-alloy build, compact and lightweight, excellent handling, great image quality, excellent lens, comprehensive level of specification
The bad
Large screen hampered in brighter conditions - viewing becomes difficult, no built-in optical viewfinder, pop-up flash position means errant fingers can inadvertently hinder it, Mode dial’s lock fiddly to use
Verdict
The Ricoh GR Digital Mk III follows on from the popular GR Mk I and Mk II where many professional and enthusiast snappers had found a quality compact “home”. The new Mk III has a new, faster, lens, much improved resolution LCD and new image engine and has great image quality pouring from every pixel
Key specs
10 megapixels, Li-ion battery, SD, SDHC

  • Thanks for the excellent review. I just bought one myself and feel it is the best point and shoot I have ever owned. Period. One minor point, however. While I agree that the price is high, it is really not fair to compare this to a dslr. This is a completely different camera with features important to a very particular kind of shooter. I would not want to lug around any entry level dslr - but I might bring this camera.

Having said that, it might be useful to compare this to a Leica D-Lux4/Panasonic LX3 or Sigma DP2 as this is the real competition to this camera - not a Nikon D5000 even if the price is similar. I certainly get your point, ie, you could have a camera with better IQ, maybe better features for the same money or even less. But in my case, I chose to buy a GRD 3 because of its size, fast lens, feature set and to complement my dslr - not necessarily to replace it.

  • Thanks for a very useful review.

Having just purchased an Oly E-P1 I'm now likely to sell it...the lure of MicroFT was SLR performance in a compact camera but the E-P1 and GF-1 are just too heavy to be considered as in the compact category.

So, I'm now looking for a really compact camera as an addition a 'traditional' DSLR outfit. The GRD3 really does appeal despite it's non-zoom limitations (perhaps because of them, in the same way a Leica M8 might). I agree with Steven that it's closest competitor must be the LX3/D-Lux 4.

    Thanks again,
