Quick review

The good
Unrivalled looks, ridiculously lightweight and the fastest motor in the world … ever
The bad
Emptying the dust holder can be messy; it’s pricy as a second vacuum and only has a 10min battery life
Verdict
Gorgeous styling, hair-trigger operation and an unbeatably good motor make the Dyson a class act, shame you have to use it for cleaning

  • Well it is all in the main review! I replaced a DC16 animal with DC31 animal, no regrets smoother running slightly more power on low setting than DC16 is on full! There is an improvement with the power brush head, it tilts to maintain contact with the surface you are vacuuming & the brush head motor is 50% more powerful than the DC16 animal brush head 9 watts-new, 6 watts old. Only 3 watts i here you say but there is a noticeable difference! Lastly it is a bit quieter on low power than the DC16, as i said it does have abit more suction even on low! DC16 36 air watts, DC31 38 air watts (65 air watts!) when little button is pressed on back of motor housing. People will always find room to complain as regards the battery life but for small jobs it is perfect!
    Hope this helps!

  • Bought the animal version today and managed to scratch my new oak wood floor with the abrasive sharp edged attachment.. Useful only on carpet Posted by John, England
  • Bought the DC31 and love it. Battery life exactly as advertised, but you get full operation suction up until when the battery falls below some set voltage, then it switches off.
The kids like using it so we have found the cars are getting cleaned every weekend.
We bought an extra battery so if you run out on a job, you can finish it.

  • For the twit who wrote the review. The motor is not a SRM it has magnets in the rotor. It may well be the you are getting confused with the motor in the hand drier which appears to have an iron rotor. The actual motor resembles that of a motor used to drive the pump of a dish washer / washing machine. The differance is that instead of the normal AC it gets, DC is swicthed at higher speed by a drive from a stepper motor.
Also the claim for the speed that the rotor assembly runs at, is to my mind, far from its opperating speed. This is due to the time it takes to achive its full speed and spool up the compressor in under 2 seconds. Further more I intend to take matters futher having purchasing one and running tests. I am a company who produces motors and small gas turbines for use in model aircraft.

  • Ian from Essex seems a very rude man indeed. What a big head. Would not want to do business with him regardless of whether he is correct or not Posted by David, UK
