Quick review

The good
Price, plenty of connections, TV card
The bad
No Blu-ray drive
Verdict
Priced at a penny under £500, you will have to factor in the provision for a monitor, either as a new purchase or using an existing unit. Even so, as a quad-core unit this is highly competitive against similar spec base units
Key specs
CompactFlash, Component, Composite, DVI, Ethernet, HDMI, MemoryStick, Optical, S-Video, SD, SDHC, USB, VGA, Wi-Fi, Windows Vista, xD-Picture card

  • This reads like you took the spec sheet off Aldi and spun it into prose. Apart from a comment about the keyboard there is nothing to say you have had any hands on experience with the PC. And lets face it, the keyboard isn't what we were waiting with baited breath to learn about here.
How loud is it (the WD drive is supposed to be very quiet. Is it? Is it drowned out by the rest of the rig?) What is the build quality like? Or maybe a benchmark? What about the power usage - does the Q8200 suck less juice than the Q6600 previously released by Aldi.
How big is it? Basic stuff, but if you had it on the bench, perhaps you could have run a measuring stick along its flanks? Oh - but there are no dimensions in the Aldi spec sheet - what a coincidence.
Review? I don't think so, more of an advertorial. No shame in that, just please don't abuse the term "review".

  • Martin, I'm sorry to hear that you didn't find what you were looking for in the review here. It is perhaps no coincidence that the review and the Aldi spec sheet are similar, after all, they both highlight the interesting points about this desktop PC. With so much packed into this PC, some things will always be omitted, so the focus, in my opinion, has been on those things that the majority will find interesting.

We don't do benchmarking here at Pocket-lint; we don't provide lists of numbers or graphs either, preferring contextual reviews. In a desktop PC of this sort, you can easily hunt out more information on the components involved, which are detailed here, if that's what you're after.

In terms of noise, the unit ran unobtrusively, with barely any drive noise. Fan noise wasn't a problem either, overall, it is quiet, certainly quiet enough to sit in your lounge to perform multimedia duties, and nothing like the noise you'd get from consoles doing a similar job (PS3, Xbox 360). Of course this varies on the environment, especially the surface you place it on, and is very much a subjective measure.

  • well, its sold out now anyway, all gone, nationwide, before lunch.
My point about your review - yes of course it should not conflict with the spec sheet, the review and the spec sheet should be in close agreement - but what value have you added for the reader over and above simply reading Aldi's own description?
I didn't go hunting for information on components - I just read the Aldi web page. Then I read your review and I learnt nothing new (apart from a dodgy keyboard). Can you honestly point to any paragraph which isn't simply a rephrasing of the same info as the Aldi spec? You've taken the Aldi write-up and put it into your own words. How is that a review?
Surely a good review should leave the reader feeling there was some added value beyond simply advertising the retailer's specification?

  • I agree with Martin! Not a word about how many PCI slots are available, the mainboard in general, the wattage of the PSU. I will definetely buy one when it launches here in Greece - December the 4th (waiting out of my local ALDI store to open) but when someone reviews a PC he should definetely dig into it for info that's not available to the customer from the company advertisement.
