Quick review

The good
Website a mine of information, can set-up different users, prioritisation, growing Blu-ray titles
The bad
You don’t always get what you want, website search not the best
Verdict
The frustration of not being able to have the film of your choice when you want it is an obvious drawback – heading to your high street video store is then just an additional cost, but LOVEFiLM is really a movie rental lifestyle

  • Just wanted to say, I'm a paying customer of LOVEFiLM and I honestly can't fault them.. Get all my top DVDs on the list quickly, and normally return the same day to recieve a new DVD in the morning! Posted by TigerTails, UK

  • Member for over one year now, speed of rental turnaround is FANTASTIC, selection is also great, I NEVER find I get ANY titles any quicker for prioritizing, even reserving before release. Overall, great if you cast your net wide and have a good size pool to get random rentals from, I quite like the lucky dip aspect. If ever you get the wrong title or disc sent to you by them in error (speaking from multiple experiences), don't bother to email or complain because you will only get a succession of patronizing standard letter responses which just deny deny deny deny! • Generally a great service but a word of warning: Lovefilm admit that if you send back too many titles a week you will be de-prioritised for receiving your next disc, which effectively limits how many you can have per month. This is apparently due to their fair use policy, which favours users that return one disc a week over higher-use individuals, who "are probably making illegal copies".

As a high-end user for six months, who had to rely on rental dvds as I had no TV ariel in my rented flat and could not get sky/freeview/virgin, this quickly became frustrating as I returned all 3 of my discs on the unlimited package in 3 days (watching a film a night) only for no new new discs to arrive until halfway through the following week. They did not explain to me that this was why I had no DVDS: when I contacted them they gave me the usual "Sorry, it's unusual, service will improve shortly" response. As ptgooner says, it's pointless appealing to customer services as frankly they are a waste of your time.

So as long as you're not reliant on them for entertainment, and are happy to get a new disc once or twice a week, even on an "unlimited" package, go ahead! For regular light usage it beats a rental shop!
