Quick review

The good
Wide range of channels available, effective record and time-shift features
The bad
Awkward initial setup, unfriendly interface, high demands on system performance
Verdict
With a high-end PC the WinTV is just about capable, but we encountered a few too many problems here to recommend it

  • I’m concerned the writer of this review doesn’t really understand what freesat (not Freesat from Sky) actually is. A look at www.freesat.co.uk will clarify things for readers who are unsure.

As good as the Hauppauge WinTV Nova-S-USB2 may be, it is not truely ‘freesat compatible’ as it doesn’t support the freesat Program Guide (EPG) which is the heart of freesat. It also isn’t easy to view ITV HD either without extra software (such as the excellent DVBviewer) and a lot of fiddling with settings.

A lot of those 500+ channels will be encrypted as they need a Sky card to view them. Also the idea of an LNB splitter can cause problems, and a better solution is a separate feed from a quad LNB dish.

Another Hauppauge product worth considering is the Nova-HD-S2 which is an internal PCI card, and supports the newer DVB-S2 format which may be used by future HD channels on freesat.

  • Greetings
As Paul Mallet points out Sky "FreeSat" is not the same as BBC/ITV "Freesat" However I take him to task over the "excellent" DVBviewer. I have this piece of software with a SkyStar 2 PCI and it v. akward to use and almost impossible to edit out the dross programmes and on Astra 1 will only recognise up to 78 transponders whilst there are nearer 90. however with software it's possible to get BBC/ITV HD as well as all the HD channels on other satellites.
