Quick review

The good
Easy to use, provides sensor options and visual options, tripod mount
The bad
Neglects a wide range of options, time taken, doesn’t account for subjectivity, colours appeared too vivid
Verdict
At this price it feels as though something critical is missing. Put up against a modern TV, too many options could not be covered and without the option of selecting the look you are aiming for, it doesn’t feel like good value for money

  • I read the review from Pocket-lint and although there was some truth to the fact that a "Good" picture is highly subjective, Datacolor's Spyder TV does not calibrate to a "Good" picture fore exactly the same reason... It's subjective. The objective is to calibrate the TV to industry studio standards. To get the set to provide the same picture as the one the Director mixed the track on, and intended for it's viewing. The main standard here is setting the television's temperature level which effects brightness, sharpness, and color. The industry standard, and ISF standard, is 6500K.

As far as how well the device performs is really up to the television manufacturer. That's why true ISF calibrations with Professional equipment cost so much. Every manufacturer is different and the technician has to know how to navigate the internal diagnostic menus with in the television that is not available to the consumer. With that said, the spyder does a great job but is limited to the adjustments that are available through typical menus and how little the manufacturer has screwed with the original signal to boost sales off of a retail sales floor.

  • I bought one of these and at £100 was honestly very dissapointed with the results and found that when watching a BluRay OF The Dark Knight after applying the Spyders settings I could no longer make out any detail in dark scenes IMHO mainly due to the fact the Spyder came up with a brightness setting of 31.
Personally I found the way the Spyder worked far to basic with nothing to adjust seperate colour settings only adjusting the overall colour and Tint.
Not quite what I was expecting for £100
