Quick review

The good
4000 Skype minutes a month, easy to setup, dedicated Skype button
The bad
No smartphone features, no SkypeOut, no Video calling, no roaming beyond 3 network
Verdict
Good, but too basic an offering to want to replace your latest Samsung, Nokia or Sony Ericsson handset

  • Personally, the idea of a mobile phone with Skype appealed. My home [landline] phone is permanently forwarded to my Skype-In number. My wife works in China and we use Skype to communicate when she is away from home in the UK. The loss of the ability to Skype-Out at VoIP rates to international mobiles and landlines appeared a small price to pay as long as I could receive both my mobile calls and my Skype calls without being tied to my desk [and PC] whilst at work or away from home.

The reality is that things have not quite worked as planned. Whether it is the quality of the signal reception on the handset or the lack of signal strength from 3™ I am not in a position to ascertain but when ever I walk into ANY building [home, office or local pub] I loose service! The only way I can get this phone to work is to walk out into the open air which is of no use whatever to me.

Indecently, a friend of mine with a normal (3) mobile phone has the same problem which leads me to believe it is the either the coverage or signal strength of the mobile phone service provider. I have never had this problem with my existing mobile phone provider.

I had the opportunity to transfer my existing mobile phone number from a different service provider at the time of purchase but refrained from doing so until I had tested the product. I am pleased I did not as at least I can still receive my mobile calls on my existing phone without being consigned to my back garden or a park bench.

I feel cheated out of the £49.99 purchase price and the offending phone is now consigned to the bin!

  • I use skype on my laptop without any major problems and bought a skype wifi phone for use in my house. there is some delay and the quality of sound not perfect with this phone. the volume is not very high, which may be one issue.

Just downloaded the skype 3G smartphone mobile app however, which seems to be VERY slow on 3G. worthlessly so. so taking skype mobile in it's true sense doesn't appear to be there yet.

  • Worst phone i've ever had tbh. No signal in buildings, calls cutting off mid-way when i do get signal, duplicate text messages arriving on my phone all day, randomly turning off. I could go on. Customer services were no help at all. I cant wait to see out my contract with 3. Posted by Joe, England
  • wierdly enough i have had the exact same problems as joe form england duplicat texts bad signal randomly turning off and taking about 15mins to turn on. Thier customer service is terrible, i get no help from them or have they ever repaired my phone. i know at least 4 people who have left 3 and more who want too. If you want my advice DONT BUY A SKYPE PHONE. its a waste of money. Posted by john , england
  • so pleased its not just me, buying the skype phone has been a costly mistake! in addition to the points above I would add that the battery life is terrible and the phone generates such a magnetic field it will pick up 1p coins and blanks hotel key cards! Posted by john, England
  • is this phone worth getting for 40 pound Posted by jhanzeeb, england
  • does it have blue tooth Posted by navodhya, england
  • I like the fact that it is light. small and simple. However I now have a massive problem: the memory is constantly full which means that I can't receive text messages anymore. I deleted everythin on the phone, but it still says there was no memory. Something is wrong. Very annoying! Posted by Konrad, UK
  • Well,! I reall fancied one of those skype fones. I use skype on my lap top to talk with my mate in Toronto, but after reading the comments here, they have a long way to go with this type of communication before I buy one. Posted by Eddie Byrne, UK
  • Eddie,

the company has since launched the INQ1 a more inclusive social networking phone that could be a better solution. We are still waiting for our review unit to come in, but from a first look, it looks mighty impressive for those looking to stay socially connected at a low price

  • I contracted for a Amoi Skype on 3 as a result of a promo on the Skype website This has turned out to be the biggest pile of junk I have ever bought. It has been back to 3 twice for "repair" due to constant loss of signal, getting very hot after fiveminutes call time, calls constantly dropping out afer a minute or so. The battery life is poor requireing daily recharge. Most of my friends now call meon my land line because they say they can never get me on the mobile anymore. The Skye facility fails due to all of these issues. This is a BAD phone !! Posted by webbo, UK
  • I bought it for £40 because my normal phone (SE C902 - v good!) is in for repair (I was on the phone in the snow.. not exactly clever!)
Anyway - I've been moderately impressed.. bes phone I've ever bought for £40! The camera isn't bad and the signal seems to be ok.. like on all 3 phones.. and I haven't really used SKYPE- maybe defeating the object of me having the phone. The texting is a tad annoying as i'm used to Sony Ericsson but I'll deal with it. The ringtones are a bit rubbish though- especially the alarm and you have no option to change it.

All in all, if I were to give my C902 a 9/10 -- on the same basis i'd give this SKYPE phone a fair 5/10.

  • It's terrible I've had two and with in two weeks in the buttons stopped working properly about 2 weeks in. They're by far the worst phones ever. Posted by jess, uk
  • Has it got MSN on? Posted by dan, uk
  • Yes it has got MSN. Posted by Parv, UK
  • To be honest, I couldn't care less about the phone's Skype features! I'm more interested in what it's MP3 player is like, because I've seen this for £12.50 and that sounds like a really good price for a phone with an MP3 player and a 2MP camera.
So... Does it have a 3.5mm audio jack? Does it take microSD cards? What file formats does it play? What's the sound quality like? Does it remember your playback position when you switch it off? Does it have dedicated fast forward/rewind/pause/volume buttons?

  • I was thinking of buying this phone today, but thanks to you guys for warning us , from what I read this phone is not worth buying its a piece of shi*t, Posted by symba, UK
  • It is a good phone and if you buy the new Skype forever sim, then what more could you want. Get all your mates, family, friends, work etc to download Skype to their computers and they can make calls for free from home as long as their computer is equipped with a microphone. Anyone can then receive and make free skype calls to everyone connected to Skype, but the phone allows you to make calls on the go and gives you the opportunity to call non-skypers too. This is a brill phone for those on a very tight budget. Posted by Deniecd, UK
  • Deniecd,
SKYPE IS good, its the phone thats crap. If you call at home from your PC, you are using SKYPE which is a seperatething from 3.
I think you work for 3, cause there is NO way this phone is good.
