Quick review

The good
Handling, image quality, ease of use, price
The bad
Pentamirror viewfinder, indistinct viewfinder info display, some key controls only in menus
Verdict
The K100D is a well-specified little D-SLR that looks like a mid-range model in specification terms but priced to fit the budget end of the market

  • I own the Canon EOS 400D, and I use this Pentax at college, and i'd definately say that they're in COMPLETELY different leagues, and that the Canon is streets ahead of this camera, and definately worth the extra money. This is said with 2 years of using both camera's in conjunction with each other. Posted by Faye, UK
  • Interesting that the college should provide Pentax cameras for students and not Canon. Perhaps their budget stretches further with Pentax? There is something of a tradition in design colleges using Pentax cameras that goes back to the popular and rugged Pentax K1000 35mm film slr.

I get a bit tired of people seeming to prefer Nikon and or Canon cameras only! This seems rather akin to most people choosing Ipod MP3 players when there are tougher, equally attractive and longer lasting alternatives. Maybe this has a lot to do with fashion and certain manufacturers advertising budgets.

After using two Olympus dslr cameras for work and pleasure for several years I am delighted with my recently purchased K100d. The Pentax cleverly combines a very easy user friendly transition to a dslr for compact digital cameras users, yet has sufficient options and control to please experienced users. Plus I can use all my old manual lenses even including those for medium format with suitable adapters and with the benefit of 'shake reduction'!

Initially I was disappointed by short AA rechargable battery life until the camera supplier recommended rechargeable Sanyo Eneloop AA cells. These have completely transformed the use of all my devices using AA cells including bike lamps. Those in the Pentax are still using their original charge as supplied (Eneloops come ready charged) despite the camera having been stored and then used alternately several times weekly for nearly two months. The K100d is not overly demanding on battery power; it's more that the traditional rechargable cells are no longer up to the user characteristics of most digital cameras.

I chose the K100d largely upon the comments of other owners and less upon photo. magazine reviews. From a delighted non Canon, non Nikon user :)
