Apple to offer "Black Friday" sale in the UK 0

It's traditional in the States for retailers to hold sales on the Friday after Thanksgiving to kick off the Christmas shopping period, but it's not something UK shops get involved in.

This year seems different however with Apple promising a "one-day shopping event" on 28 November stating that it will be their "biggest shopping event of the year".

The promotional message has come via Apple's European offices - and has been confirmed by Apple's UK PR team - with the company promising "dozens of great iPod, iPhone and Mac gift ideas".

The teaser states, "Lots of gifts, one day not to miss", but a call to Apple's sales line has left us none the wiser as to what kind of shopping event it might be.

The Apple operative Pocket-lint spoke to said that they had been given the heads-up for a busy Friday, but were not in the know for what was planned.

Meanwhile, gadget fans who can wait an extra three days will be able to benefit from the government's own Christmas sale with the reduction of VAT from 17.5% to 15%.

A 32GB iPod touch currently on sale through Apple's online store for £289.00 should drop £7.22 to around £282.

  • Anyone have any ideas whether there will be any significant discounts on Ipod touches (1st gen)? Im not holding mu breath as there is a big demand for them at the moment.

The argos deal showed that quite clearly...

  • @ Zabir - you can't buy 1st gen touch's from apple now, only 2nd gen. If they would have had old stock they will normally push it through other channels for reselling. Posted by Robert, US
  • WoHooo, a whole £7, gosh I love Gordon Brown Posted by nick, UK
  • Does the black friday discount have any affect on refurbished goods? I'm new to this black friday stuff :S Posted by Zabir, UK
  • How much did apple discount stuff in the us last year? is it not like, a fiver off or something? Posted by jane-jack, uk
  • Mebbe, just mebbe this will be the start of something beautiful with Brit shops getting in on the Good Friday stuff. Posted by Robbo, ----
  • robbo, dont hold your breath!

And another thing, the reason why the US is cheaper when you look at conversion rates is that in the States, the prices do not include tax, it gets added on after

  • Wrong!

an item costing 289.00 would fall in price by 6.15 (not 7.22)

    289.00 * 1/1.175 * 1.15 = 282.85

In other words, the effect is even less than your article (and ones published in the Metro) would have us believe. Plus, I wonder how many retailers are actually going to pass on that saving to the customer.

  • I doubt that a fiver here or there will make me part with my money, especially when we will get that in 3 days time.
5-10% is nothing on small items, slightly better on the main products but I doubt we will see that.

    Apple hype!!

  • NOTHING, compared to what it should be, IMHO. £40 from £800 wouldn't exactly MAKE me want to purchase it now! If you want something, you'll get it, and %2 more, or 2 percent less wouldn't make any difference! Disappointing, imho. Posted by Andrei, R.F.
