Sony has announced it has developed a new CMOS image sensor for use in cameraphones that offers the industry's highest ever pixel count at 12.25 effective megapixels.

Designed to meet the increasing need for advanced image quality within mobile phone enabled cameras, the sensor uses proprietary Sony tech.

The sensor measures just 7.5mm, so will not add bulk to cameraphones, that Sony says are getting smaller and slimmer due to customer demand.

In addition, the company has announced an 8.11 and 5.15 megapixels sensors that will make up part of the Exmor range too as well as complimentary lens modules.

A wave of 8-megapixel cameraphones have hit the UK market recently, including the Sony Ericsson C905.
