Seagate and McAfee create self encrypting HDDs

Additions to Momentus Full Disk Encryption (FDE) line-up

Encrypted HDDs were on the list of the Seagate's CEO's priorities when he spoke to Pocket-lint recently, but now the company has teamed up with security software expert McAfee to bring these drives to market.

The new self-encrypting notebook PC hard drives join Seagate's Momentus Full Disk Encryption (FDE) range and come in both 7200RPM and 5400RPM versions.

Both of these are now available in 320GB capacities and a 500GB version is set to be on shelves soon.

The drives are claimed to be "the fastest self-encrypting hard drives in the industry". They offer a SATA interface and, most importantly, boast government-grade AES encryption.

As for the team-up with McAfee - the McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) management system and its endpoint encryption client are integrated into each new Seagate FDE HDD.

There's no prices as yet but we'll keep you posted.
